I feel like so many people forget that they don't even listen to one genre of music so why should a musician only make one genre.
Me listening to micro sound
That’s kinda an oversimplification but I do agree… ego really gets in the way
@@krusher181 that’s not an oversimplification. That’s most likely one of the reasons why artists change genres or switch up their sound. People are influenced by what they hear, that’s why so many people imitate Phoebe Bridgers sound (my fault Phoebe Bridgers shout-out) because they are influenced by what they like.
I don't like micheal after thriller though
@@joshentertainment2 what HOW
When the super lowkey indie obscure underground artist I listen to gets more than 15 monthly listeners, I stop listening because I know they sold out 👎
One of the things that make my blood boil down is when I see my favorite musician trying to earn a living by doing something that they love.
how come my favorite musicians can't try to earn a living doing something *i* love instead? how selfish.
MY FAVOURITE ARTIST(Billy Mackenzie) NEVER SOLD OUT!! Never!..bro just repeatedly sabotaged his own career. His story was very sad actually :/
@@witchflowers6942 who?
@@witchflowers6942 probably why we’ve never heard of him
😭😭
People say this about The Weeknd too, because he doesn't make dark, sad music anymore. But he was also 19 & homeless when he made those records so respectfully, I think his changes over time are a good thing. His music is reflective of himself and where he is. He has experimented with so many different sounds, it's crazy that people want him to just make the same thing when he's clearly in a different place idk
He went to synth pop
His new music is still great tho which is why I don’t understand why people want him to turn back to his old sound so bad. Dawn FM is amazing pop and After Hours is generally considered top 3 in his discography, a lot of people’s favorite (including myself)
im fine with him doing whatever he wants, but i do miss kissland and trilogy ALOT.
@@we5t5id3gunn see that is totally fair and those albums are amazing, but I love the new direction he’s moving in, regardless of if it’s better or not. It’s refreshing to see pop music with so much great artistry put into it
@@we5t5id3gunn I agree, but if he still made that shit now he'd have fallen into relative irrelevancy by now. Healthy artists change over time and even though I would say that BBTM and Starboy are on whole fairly weak albums, he's kind of in a new prime rn with Dawn FM and After Hours
Actually Taylor really wanted to go pop and have a change after she lost AOTY at the grammys for Red, she almost had an epiphany that she should go pop, while her label was so scared she wouldn’t succeed and they were trying to make her include some country songs on 1989 but she fought hard to make 1989 fully pop.
That makes her look even worse. She changed her sound to win a Grammy, one of the most laughably stupid awards in the world?
Granted, her music got significantly better than her early country trash as a result, but still.
She was getting flack from everyone including fans at the time for going pop. (I do remember being a teen and being bitter about it LOL I am now 23 and 1989 stays on the aux).
Imagine letting your whole creative path be dictated by what a bunch of losers at the Grammys think about your album ☠️ that’s just sad.
1989 deserved to lose even more than red. To Pimp a Butterfly was album of the decade
@@machiel5888 It IS sad, and she acknowledges that now too. Back then she was seeking external validation a lot.
Taylor Swift has said she majorly pushed to go pop against the wishes of her old record label
The idea that Maroon 5 weren't a full-on cookie-cutter pop band from the get-go is hilarious to me. Like them trying to get more radio play is at all a change from what they were doing from the very beginning.
Yeah I think people forget that the kind of music on Songs About Jane (soulful soft rock) was incredibly popular back then. Early 2000s radio was full of Maroon 5, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Train, Dave Mathews, etc. I do think it's better than what they're making now, but it's not like they ever weren't appealing to whatever was popular at the time.
Bands that change their sound aren’t sellouts on any level it irritates me to no end that people ever equate the two.
Artists are people that grow and change like everything else people always forget
Huge difference between changing your sound for artistic reasons (see e.g. Swans going from no-wave to gothic rock to ambient or Frank Zappa going from parody pop-rock to jazz to chamber music) and changing your sound for marketing reasons.
@@dinospumoni5611 I was specifically referring to the artistic choices and evolution in the first place. But it’s ignorant to claim a band changed their sound for marketing reasons and there’s no proof but obviously that happens I’m not saying mediocre artist’s don’t exist. But artists especially in the 70-90’s were dragged through the coals by their fans for sound changes regardless of whether it was genuinely good or a money grab.
To prevent sellouts in music, GATEKEEP that obscure, incredibly talented songwriter you love. NEVER share their music
this is sarcasm right 😭
I hate selling out so much, I don't even share my own SoundCloud. As soon as a song reaches 10 plays I delete it immediately.
@@mgg9416 Oh yeah, I make sure my topic channel has all the videos blocked worldwide besides in South Sudan and Abyssinia 😌
That's.....kinda dehumanizing
Me after hearing grimes' latest turds I mean, releases
Billie Joe went immediately into rehab after that iHeartRadio incident. It was cringe but not fair to characterize him as being purely immature when it was a result of addiction and mental health issues
Wish you would have brought up why Kim Hill left Black Eyed Peas, the pressure from the management and industry to hyper sexualize her, i quote "The tug of war was about my sexuality and how much of that I was willing to like, literally strip down. I never wanted to be objectified while doing my music."
Cool fact but not really relevant to the topic of this video
Peak comedy 🤣
taylor swift actually faced major backlash from the label when she told them she wanted to make a pop record
I think people have a problem with so-called sellouts because it comes with a style change. People see it as a betrayal of the music that made THEM enjoy the band, and they're not pleasing their original fanbase anymore. People don't want the ARTISTS to succeed, they want the music that THEY like to succeed.
I disagree, most fans are welcoming of changes in artistic direction, the issue is when those changes are done strictly to make more money. Textbook example being Butthole Surfers, probably the most revolutionary band in the history of punk music, making an album or two to try to get charted. To be fair, I think they'd done enough at that point to take no issue in them trying to make a buck, but a lot of these artists are selling out way before they've ever made anything that actually matters.
I don’t get gate keeping stuff whenever I find something new I like I want to tell everyone show everyone. Sharing art I am passionate about is one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done.
I love sharing new stuff I’ve found. It’s a really good way to connect with people. I’ll always remember my first listen to an amazing song, exactly what I was doing and who I was with. Some of my best memories
As someone who has played shows at 924 Gilman and has known some of the volunteer staff. That impression is completely accurate. They do things by votes and volunteer member meetings. So they really were just hella petty towards them. Sometime in the last 8 years, Billie Joe Armstrong donated an entire sound system to the venue. I don’t remember if that was during it after the ban. But I just find it really funny.
Its like, I know so many of those people hanging around the Gilman and other venues are just actively self destructive and stand from privilege and as someone who grew up with no choice but to suffer and be poor, live around grime and drugs and sadness, I get annoyed knowing that a lot of these folks.... don't even need to be there. They're vacationing in poverty knowing they can go home any time they want. And honestly, the art they make, is not good. It's uninspired, vague. I have no problem with privileges, just, take full advantage of them and stop trying to be inferior and powerless.
If you couldn't tell, I'm a bay area ex pat, and I am not going back. The people are mean, it always smells, no matter where you are. The smell simply maximizes in SF.
i learned from this video one day I can grow to be a sellout too, god bless
Some music can be played on audio playing devices and I feel like that's a real advantage for musicians
bands either have their song writer die young or live long enough to turn into a pop band.
Thank God someone's defending the smaller artists out there
3:48 "we neeed another hit aaaiyayaaaa" this made me laugh so much. Great humour all-round, ofc fused with great content overall. Keep it up :)
This was incredibly well structured and edited, also you made a great point: just be happy that your favourite artist is getting the recognition they deserve and share the love!
I kinda disagree unfortunately. I love the concept of the video and love the knowledge and passion on the subject! But for me there is a lot of rambling, especially during Green Day, that makes me want to skip parts of the video or stop watching. I think making more concise points about each section would make it a more enjoyable. That's just my opinion though, don't know if anyone else feels the same :)
If the goal is "make unique and creative music," then don't sign to a record label. If the goal is "make a bit of money so you can live somewhat comfortably," then do. Unfortunately, these two things are often at odds. We need like a musical middle class, and I think indie labels like Sub Pop can provide that.
there are some bands where i only enjoy one album they make and thats fine. look at king gizzard... they have so many albums that are diff genres..its cool to experiment
I just love your tier lists so much
also, i'm a swiftie so i thought it was gonna go a different route lol. i think you were going to talk about her scandals with ticket pricing, merch strategies, things like that. as ive said i'm a fan, but i'm not of the crazy fan type that will buy everything she releases just bc it has her name on it and it's "official" lol. there's definitely shit tier products in her merch, she seems to milk it as much as she can, every "new release" that's highly anticipated by her crazy fandom obsessed with the number 13 and easter eggs and clues, turns out to just be another merch drop. I know it's optional to buy but it still feels bad to see, you just know it's limited low quality products with hyper long lead times that take ages to arrive. not sure if this was taylor or another pop artist (maybe ari?) but they made some jewelry or something and it was in their store at like 80 bucks or something and someone found the same shit on aliexpress for like 2.
these shady ass practices that seem to me now common place are IMO much more deserving of the "sell out" title than musical decisions.
i love your videos !!! i wish you would make more examples in these tier lists. so they could be more dynamic instead of everyone being the winner lol
Babe don't forget Fall Out Boy!!! would have loved to hear that analysis. But great video nonetheless, people need to chill out lmao
They’re no more sellouts than anyone getting paid hourly at a retail store IMO 🤷♂️ ya gotta eat to live to play da music
quality content Deb
Video suggestion: why a bunch of artists are selling their music rigths, the whole catalog?
Just a few I remember : Justin Timberlake, Shakira, Stevie Nicks, Bob Dylan....
I bet there is more.... I'm curious, what is going on?
Rumor that JT sold his because maybe he is about to be "cancelled"? 👀
Using the tier list format as an excuse to completely mock the concept of selling out was genius.
The Green Day story gets even funnier when you remember that an ex-girlfriend of Billie Joe broke up with him and moved to Ecuador because the band had signed with a label.
I could be wrong about that though but she is mentioned on She, Sassafras Roots and Chump.
The concept of selling out is mostly just outdated now. I believe the only time it should actually be thrown at an artist is if they've very clearly compromised their principles/stepped on someone else's toes/or literally pandered in every conceivable way in order to make a whack ton of money, or just get ahead. Otherwise, I think these days we need to let artists do what they need to do to have a successful and fulfilling career.
i found my favorite band when they were still really small. now theyre selling out shows in america and europe and stuff and im SO happy for them, seriously. i cant believe theres people out there who dont want their favorite bands to find success wtf.
that was the best clip you could’ve picked to show fergies national anthem omg love u dev-i only wish you could’ve shoe-horned in the clip of her flipping while singing because it makes me cry laughing every time i watch it ☠️
"This is where the pee started to mutate"
- Dev Lemos
Not to be superficial but i appreciate how she says things more than the actual topics. And the punchlines are tweaked with rocking style, i just like that so so much!
Green Day was my lil childhood rebellion and like it definitely is way more disappointing to hear they made new stuff and to know its gonna be bad but I respect them for almost every other thing they've done
I've played in a couple bands around the 924 Gilman scene. The second show I played there I was supporting his youngest son's band and Billie Joe was there for their set just standing in the back while everyone tried their best not to stare at him.
There's still a lot of love for green day at gilman. Their original band name is graffitied on one of the rafters and there's even an inside joke about green day covers being banned.
Thanks!
Haven’t watched the video yet but my favorite example of a sellout is sugar ray, just because of how honest Mark MacGrath is about it. To paraphrase he basically said “I wasn’t making enough money making metal, and I realized I didn’t have any talents outside of music, so I started making more radio friendly music and boom I started making good money” I like his honesty. And sugar ray has a lot of bangers so how can you hate?
Don’t care if an artist profits off their own work.
I’m only interested in if they can make music that speaks to me, not if I can deify them for being “authentic” or a “punk.”
👏👏
But the music that sells the most influences culture and music as well, things that we get surrounded by. Not only that but it can have an affect on the industry itself, sell more artificial music(easy to sell) and don't allow for smaller artists to release more peculiar music that halts music progression
@@Mandroid45 There’s never been a period in the music industry when independent artists weren’t able to build an audience and thrive within their own specific niches. They will never achieve widespread fame or success compared to major label signees, but that was never the intent to begin with.
Pop music will always dominate the airways (along with whatever peculiar flavor of the week it’s presented in), and it’s on you, the consumer, to go out and diversify your listening habits by seeking out fresh experiences. The radio/Top 100 Billboard is there to give you the most accessible cuts, nothing more.
@@lordbauer5983 I think that's a very blindsided way of viewing things, top 100 has always been about consistency and those with the most power will do everything to ensure there's little to no competition in order to make a profit. There's also only so much responsibility you can put on the consumer when everything is owned by a handful of companies as well as in the age of technology where we're constantly getting manipulated at every turn
@@Mandroid45 1. Your point about the Top 100 reflects exactly what I’m saying.
2. You are in no way impacted by big labels when it comes to discovering new artists. In fact, you’re currently living in a golden age when it comes to exposure on both sides of the aisle. An artist can promote themselves for free on the internet while a consumer has more choices than ever before when it comes to listening to music.
Major labels have bigger marketing budgets, which means they can afford to get more eyeballs. This DOES NOT mean they’re suppressing other artists though. It’s absolutely on the consumer to not only go seek out smaller artists, but to also help promote them through word of mouth.
If you want to talk about wage disparity or parasitic contracts THEN I’ll agree that there’s a huge problem going unaddressed.
This is a weird question, but does anyone know where i can find that sweater? I think i literally own the painting it's based on but i cant tell for sure haha
I'm surprised you didn't mention P!nk
yes omg her music is so bad niw
Very good video, I can see ur brain Is very smooth and admirable. Keep on Dumbo
This video was so cool and informative and funny dev!!!
Taylor looks gorgeous as always on the thumbnail
I love your personality
I love the improv style nature of this video it's really charming lol
As a typical I dont like them any more guy... I will say, it's not them succeeding that bothers people it's that they are finally succeeding, but its who they are now/what they've chosen to be rather than what they were. Its okay to not like change especially when the lyrics, the actual sentiment of the song have completely changed topics. You can attribute that to growth... I attribute it to them changing based on their surroundings. For example I dont think Jaden ever really changed he never had to peer lean. He always was this kid following a dream. His surroundings were all the same. Someone save jack harlow
Glad I found your channel
i literally need that train sweater
dev you're so funny and the videos are wonderful and full of character!
Maroon 5 Songs About Jane is one of my top 5 albums of all time.
u shold totally talk about kara's flowers [maroon 5's old band]
Remember billie joe started rehab after the i heart radio incident. You just need to hear 1 song and you can clearly tell how drunk he was, he could barely hit a note
me with Brent rn lol but then when he post his cool ass pic on IG i be like damn he deserves this tbh cause the way his music makes me feel…everyone deserves to hear that. so anyone who can make ppl feel like that deserves to be heard by as many as possible
Need to know where she got that hoodie from cause it's fire
this video slayed
love the jack harlow clickbait queen, you got me!
This video should be renamed to "Devon Lemons doesn't understand punk that well". No hate though i liked the rest of the video
Why is it wrong for this punk venue to stop accommodating Green Day? Green Day was making clear steps away from the punk scene to a more commercially accessible sound. It’s the punk scene of course they’re gonna hate the more commercially accessible sound
i was just watching ur last video when you uploaded this-
i think it's really sad when an act makes a unique and signature style of music and then gets pushed to something more mainstream just because of money. and I think it's really respectable for an act to stick with what feels authentic. I don't really blame the artist, but i think it makes a worse product when they do chase money. the people I'd call "sellouts" would be people like Drake for phoning in every project forever or Taylor Swift, not for transitioning to pop, but for putting out stuff like You Need to Calm Down and Me. these artists had already made it and are still just chasing money. I think this video sorta takes a "sellouts don't exist and when they do, it's because they had to, oh well" stance and I think that's really not the takeaway we should have. if artists had their basic needs met and had better social support systems, we wouldn't need labels as much and artists would be able to make truly authentic music.
i dont think me! is really one of those songs, and even while watching miss americana, taylors documentary, where it delves into her writing process for that song, it seems like something she was genuinely happy with it, and wanted to make something that her audiences would enjoy. It did turn into a meme though, even within the swifties and i kind of like that. i do agree that you need to calm down is a very clear cash grab, and i love taylor but that entire song and especially the music vid seemed kind of disingenuous, especially when she could have spent all of that money used on sets and hiring so many lgbtq+ influencers on something actually worthwhile. Anyways, idk why I'm writing all that. I wouldn't label tay as a sellout but i do think yntcd was not a very good decision on her behalf.
I hate when people called Taylor a sellout. She left the country and made pop in the city. She's older and makes indie music now, people change
Train shirt. Train shirt. Train shirt.
you kinda slayed there
😳😳😳what if i agree w ur points but also Walk the Moon’s drastic shift between the albums Talking is Hard and What if Nothing… gags
Shut up and Dance went big and the band said “oh… so every song must be synth dance music… got it😎”
but also i was a hipster teen when What if Nothing released so who knows maybe its good and i was just upset by the change
The whole attitude changed I'd argue with the Shins' sellout to McDonald's BEFORE ZACK BRAFF BRAFFED THEIR CAREER with that similar yet less grievous sellout shout-out in "Garden State"
What about all the Buy-Ins
I’d be willing to bet a fortune that if Radiohead made Kid A today, they would be called sellouts. The term “sellout” does apply in some cases, but it’s sad that artists can’t change their sound anymore without facing backlash.
radiohead… Sellouts? nooo… radiohead… overrated? yesss.. a bit.. verrryyy
they wouldn't be that important today to make even people care
Your hair looks glorious and frames your face beautifully.
The black eyed peas had a concert around a month ago in Germany (i think I’m not sure), but I remember videos being shared of them getting booed because will.I.am just ??? Sat on the stage and looked at his phone ?? The whole show??
I think that’s what being a „sellout“ also brings around, not caring about an audience anymore. I don’t know what was wrong, but he seemed just plain bored with being on stage and just played on his phone because he didn’t care.
And tbh, they have gross amounts of money, if they don’t feel like performing, they should just quit.
The audacity. That's what the "§ tier" needs to be defined as, forever and ever. "Sellout tier"
could you maybe talk about scene(core) revival in a video?
By any means necessary
feeling more naughty than Fred from Courage the Cowardly Dog
Big fan of when my favorite funny music woman makes a teir list where everything is on the same teir
Also people are gonna complain no matter what, if an artist changes sound they call them a sellout and say they miss their old music, but if they keep the same sound people get bored and move on
what happened to the miley video? i never got to watch it
I remember the day I sold out. My orifices have never been there same.
what about the greatest artist of all time ??!! MGK he is LITERALLY the mainstream sellout , kinda disappointed you didn't mention him.
Can’t believe you named yourself number one. Your career is promising and just started!
love
Banger Vid
Johnny Quest thinks we’re sellouts
Green Day's newer stuff might not be great as it once was BUT they are still one of the best live shows and live show performers in rock. If you've never seen them live and not just "live" for like an award show or something I highly recommend doing it before they retire.
You rock
you're so fricking funny sometimes
I’m sorry Sean Kingston is a double decker sell boat man. Bruv sold out so quick went from “Im locked up they won’t let me out.” To “shorty burning fire on the dance flo oh oh oh”
That's a cool train jumper
this hairstyle and color suits you well
Mven if the outcome is that you're still making listenable music, as soon as your intention is not to make the best song and is instead to make the most broad/agreeable song for the biggest audience, that is I think what people mean when they call someone a sell out. It can hurt a fan personally, especially if they've built some parasocial relationship with an artist, to see their 'artistic integrity' slip in this way. Whether or not that response is fair is the question I suppose.
I enjoyed it
i love this channel man. it’s funny & chill while ALSO being informative. wow!
dev whyd you sell out?
14:56
As long as you make good music who cares.
I agree
Me 😏
Im a pretty unique guy you could say
how are people not just happy for their favorite artists when they're successful?? i've been listening to Aurora since 2016 and when i heard she was gonna have a musical part in frozen 2 i knew she was gonna get so many new people listening to her and it was just so exciting!!!
plus it's always super cool hearing someone's music somewhere it might not normally be imo (like in commercials)
Moves like jagger is the worst
my favorite indie underground super niche artist, Dev Lemons, is a sellout too super bummed 😔👎
The success proves him right. It's mostly the music nerds that have a very developed and special taste that complain about artist X going mainstream. But it doesn't matter. If 1 million people enjoy the new Maroon 5, they did everthing right. We should stop complaining about what we personally consider bad music and listen to the good stuff. There's so much good stuff to discover and to re-listen again, who honestly has time for the bad songs? What is good is very subjectiv anyway. The mainstream will always be the mainstream but with streaming we have access to great not-so-mainstream and anti-mainstream stuff, that even if it appears that modern music is bad on the surface, there are still a lot of great releases coming out every week.
