imo instagram would really benefit from a pinterestification. my main issue with pinterest is that there is NO credit and people don’t really post there, since people do post on insta tho i can see it being a neat way to discover peoples accounts, especially for artists. cute video tho :3

The corporate-ization of tiktok made me so depressed that I deleted the app after spending two years building a (small) following. All the creativity and originality that had drawn me to the app in the first place has been sucked out by the profit-forward algorithms that dominate every other platform.
I get what you mean, but that mostly reflects your own engagement. 90% of my FYP is still small-medium sized creators who never post "corporatized" content. The only videos I ever see with more than like 100k likes are short funny clips. I guess it just depends on your interests. My FYP is people talking about music, rock climbing, history/archaeology, and politics. None of these have been tainted. This doesn't mean I'm not also upset with what TikTok has become; I just think there's still a lot of great content being posted that makes it worth it to be there

I'm glad you made this video. Instagram only letting you post reels instead of actual high quality horizontal videos like RUclips was the last straw for me. Unfortunately no one knows who you are without social media. I hate posting reels, it feels disgenuine to what I do but more of a way to just get some views and followers using generic sounds
I just hope RUclips remains the main horizontal video platform.

As someone who only uses RUclips and WhatsApp, and has done for about 3 years, this was an interesting insight into the social media space's progress and change. There still doesn't seem like any reason to use them which would improve the over quality of my life (and genuinely zero judgement to anyone who uses them). But this was interesting to watch to understand what's happening in that world

Why do I have to engage with tiktok format I’ve been avoiding it since day one because I find it super ridiculous with all the algorithms and how addicting it is and now I pretty much feel forced to do so WATCH THOSE VIDEOS . Instagram already has a Pinterestisation feature which is 'collections'. You can curate and save posts to 'collections', but they're not public as far as I know. But then I think there's a feature called 'Guides' ?? And they sort of function like blogs I think??? I'm confusedd.. But I swear I remember somebody I followed sharing a 'Guide' or 'collection' of curated art pieces from artists they liked a while ago.
EDIT: I just checked on instagram and the feature is in fact guides! You can make a curated 'guide' of your posts and/or your SAVED posts that then exists publicly on your profile. It's a super cute feature and it would be cool for instagram to push it a bit more!

I feel like the simplest answer here is probably best.
What's the goal of these apps? To collect data.
Does what the data is really matter? Not really.
So, they just show you whatever they want, collect the data, and sell it.
They already have all your friends and families data.
Why would they want you looking at them?
These are just the most effective ways to get as much data as possible.
They don’t make the money from literally collecting the data and then selling it. They make the money from using the data for themselves e.g targeted advertising either for paid ads or for their own marketplaces. Data is only useful if your utilise it - so the apps utilise themselves for their own ads. So people using the apps is more important than just collecting data and selling. Because you need people to stay on the app as long as possible and see their habits so you can sell them stuff.
If their research shows people don’t engage with their apps after an update they’ll reverse it. They probably think people prefer random peoples content because of TikTok. But if they see people prefer people they know, then they’ll show them people they know. (Prefer meaning stay on the app less).
Also outside of the US many countries have strict data laws so the amount of data they collect outside of the US is much less. And ofc atm Facebook is having problems with the EU because of transatlantic data transfers and selling.
So they don’t mainly rely on selling data as even collecting data is difficult. Many companies have been fined outside the eu for collecting data. Basically The profit that Facebook and others make from users’ data isn’t the literal data-market price but the money they make from advertising to people through personalised ads

Companies rent space for their advertisements. Facebook sells space on their website, but data literally everywhere else.
There are no caps on innocuous data collection because people and politicians don't see the danger in it. And innocuous data collection is the game these companies have shifted into. Everything and everything, regardless of whether or not they need it now.

my instagram average time is 1 minute, and that is to post my song of the day when the desire hits me, for whoever cares.
it's shaking, screaming and crying to get me to open the app. i get 5 notifs a day, and i don't feel tempted, i just laugh at how desperate they are.
however, they are playing dirty now, when the app randomly opens, despite me not touching the icon. it's happened 3 times, and this is making me sideye it really bad.
I literally deactivated my account about 5 months ago so I'm so shook about the whole feed thing.

I think Instagram stories are the best thing about the app and it’s almost the only way I post anything. However, almost everything else besides the dms is awful.
Hashtags have been on IG since I got it in 2013
Twitter spaces do have their uses, but its mainly around big events hosted by content creators that already have clout in the community. For example I follow some NBA RUclipsrs who got on Twitter Spaces after every game of the playoffs, regularly seeing 100s of listeners, even more when they had cross over episodes with each other. .
ALSO stan Twitter is rampant with spaces when their faves does anything (I was on Lorde Stan Twitter when Solar Power was dropped).

I think BeReal is asking me to post twice a day now. I think if any of the other apps were going to copy it, they would just copy the idea to send you a notification to post -- which would both be dystopian and kinda useful. If I could set a timer within the app to remind me to post twice a day, i would be better at posting consistently.

okay but about the full screen posts, thats an iOS only issue, on the android side of things (for reference, my app is up to date and i am running android 12) its the same way it was prior but with all the same features as iOS gets
