- Long before Adrian Miles could go for a drive on the Angeles Crest Highway on a whim with a BMW 1M, he and his brother were developing an affinity for cars by playing with the tools and police-issue Impalas in their grandpa’s garage in Philadelphia. He taught them how to appreciate automobiles and all manner of mechanical objects (radios in the Miles’ household were a frequent target of curious dismantling), and later on in school, a teacher and counselor with an E30 and E21 3-Series steered Adrian towards BMWs in particular.
Adrian appreciates whatever marque or style you’re into, but what fits him best are BMWs that channel the brand’s early sporting efforts. The rare 1M is already rightly considered a modern classic, in large part because it gets back to the roots of M Power. It’s a classic recipe made with modern ingredients. Between faster paced canyon and Crest drives, dropping the kids off at school, and road trips, Adrian is smitten with the car’s performance and demeanor as-is. The subtle pieces of of carbon fiber add some aggression to the aesthetics, and the less subtle stripes are a well adapted graphical homage to BMW’s early Motorsport days and the 2002 Turbo in particular.

You struck the right balance between the music, voice over and engine sound with this one, more of this please!
“That’s how special it is to me, I wouldn’t trade it for anything”. EPIC !!
Adrian gets it :) The 1M is a special car for exactly the reasons he brought up. The car just feels right. All BMWs used to have this feeling, but unfortunately that’s no longer the case.
I have a manual BMW M2
No other BMW's interest me.
The M2 is a bit heavy but it's good!
The bigger models with paddle change I wouldn't bother with.
Some of the owners on this channel come across as pretentious douchnozzles, but this guy is cool. He gets it.
Down to earth regular car guy, no BS with his Ferrari/lambo etc badge stuff...and 1 of 64 cars.. those cars are great also, but they mostly end up in storage and that's a waste of three quarters of a car...
Alan Hunt you can tell that if he owned a Ferrari, it would be one that HE wanted and not what he thought OTHERS would like
Agreed
Jack Aries There made to be driven or motorcycle ridden is the saying . Tomorrow is never promised
BMW was one of the best car manufacturers in the world. They were able to create a special type of car and develop it to an incredibly close state of perfection. Congratulations to BMW for one day doing this. Congratulations to Petrolicious for producing this fantastic content. And congratulations to the owner of this beautiful 1-series M coupe for understanding so much about the soul of the cars and for having found and understood a car as fantastic as the 1M.
Genuinley can't believe some of the comments trashing this car. It's clear you don't know what you're talking about. Half don't even make sense. I had a 135i, great car, and the 1M improves on all of the flaws. It's perfection in a supremely well rounded package. There's a reason people love it, like the true enthusiast owner in this video.
Small car with a manual, combined with a BMW 6 Cylinder. It doesn`t get much better than that..
@Chad Conley Porsche still does Manuals and Naturally Aspirated engines though.
@@rahulmandala4930 To be fair, BMW does too. The M2 Competition is still available with the Manual Gearbox and as far as I can recall, the all new G80 BMW M3 will be available with a manual option as well.
even my daily 330Ci makes me a little special and not by not using blinkers xD
@@rahulmandala4930 Here in Germany, Porsche sells 93% (!) of their 911/Boxsters/Caymany with PDK. That is just sad, i think. The fun in driving is to get the whole experience..shifting gears is big part of that in my eyes. Although the PDK is probably the best automatic on the market, i would never ever buy a Porsche with it. I still can`t believe Ferrari doesn`t offer a manual any more. They had the most beautiful gear shifting gates..just imagine a F40 without it. Impossible..
scotti pippen I drive a GTI with DSG and it’s a load of fun. I think it depends on the context of the car, sad Ferrari doesn’t make manuals anymore because it made sense for the context of their cars, but for BMW and Porsche it doesn’t make sense because DCT transmissions are a good medium
So far made my year watching this video. I can relate fully to what this man felt when he saw this car and took it to cali. Thanks for the video!
I really dig this guys car ownership philosophy. The balance of real world ownership and enjoyment
Adrian is a cool dude. Interesting story.
About time they add a video with a brother. I have been watching this channel for a long time and this is a first as far as I know. Hope to see more representation. :-)
@Mighty Megatron actually yes representation matters. Many multicultural people enjoy cars..... So we appreciate seeing and hearing their stories.
Adrian is very thoughtful and articulates his reasons for his passion so well.
My god. This guy is exactly me. Just sold my 1m after almost a decade of ownership. Grandpa was a mechanic too. You’ve got it right man. Don’t make the same mistake I did. Keep it.
Wonderful car..it remember me the old bmw 2002
I've owned several M cars and had a chance to drive one of these a few years ago. Put a smile on my face. A BIG one.
This car was such an Instant Classic when it came out.
One of the best Classics!!!
Love this man's view on the automobile. It's not just the visual aesthetics, it's the driving that is the true art form of a car. Cars are meant to be driven, otherwise why bother filling out the inside with drivetrains? Bravo Sir!!!!
I enjoyed how well he articulates his thoughts on the car and why he has a connection to it. The 1M is a fantastic car and it is a shame that few will get a chance to experience one.
Working at a car dealership for more than 11 years I've enjoyed driving some of the best cars made! Audi and BMW are the ultimate driving machines. IMO.
The hommage to the 2002 turbo is great
Certainly a car I have lusted over for past 5 years. Finally acquired a black 1M in December. Due to winter I have only been able to drive it twice. Looking forward to spring. This video made you sense what the owner feels when driving. These cars are amazing for those of us who want that certain “one with the vehicle” relationship. My one regret is that I did not buy one in 2011 but instead poured money into about 7 other vehicles including an M2 that are long gone by now. Lesson learned - don’t hesitate.
absolutely love this video and the gent on it. Great passion.
We wanna see you on one of this Bossman. BTW What's your favorite classic car?
I loved the gate on his property...car’s great too
Many thanks to this gentleman for sharing this. Great car and a great story.
Adrian, we both survived our wife’s Jedi mind trick at the dealership! She got me the first time, but I had mastered the force the second time around some years later. I feel another imminent battle coming soon!😂
Keep driving bro, and may the force be with you! ⚔️😉
Future classic. Cars like this are a dying breed.
This and the E30 are my two favorite Bimmers. Love the sound of that engine.
That white with the 3.0 CSL characteristics is so gorgeous. One day, I'll get a 1m and take it on the corkscrew at Laguna Seca Raceway
Cool でハイパフォーマンスな車ですね✨
It's more of a homage to the 2002 turbo which came with similar decals....... He said it himself........
Thank you for sharing. My 128i isn't a 1m but when I get it and drive, for me, it feels like it. The 1 series were made like the way it was made with the focus on driving.
I got my 128 because i missed my e30 325. The 128 felt right.
LOVELY ! A perfect balance between track ability and everyday use ability... what a wonderful and perfect daily driver...
A universally loved car.
Down to earth, non pretentious owner! Loved it, well done.
I don't understand how the N54 in this, and the N55 in mine just sounds so good. While the M2s and M3s just sound so bad. Love the 1M. I hope to get one when the boys go off to college.
The livery is awesome.
This dude knows what's up. I'm happy to hear a new voice on the channel. And, in particular, someone who has something authentic to say.
Special car. I like how every car guy that's reviewed this car loves it. That says a lot about this car.
Personality personified. And not a Shmug in sight. Glorious.
this car is so perfectly designed, it never get old, never gone be a weak powertrain, definitely a car we could have for an entire life.
easily one of the top 3 brat videos and story. this put a smile on my face while watching.
I currently have a 128i, looking to get a 135i next and my dream car is a 1m and I just want to say it's truly inspiring to be apart of this community and share the same love & passion for this vehicle regarding this series of bmw
[thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏]
I love the 1M so much. Fantastic video!
This car is screaming .... passion
I have no idea who you are but you have a real down to earth sense . You have have great taste in motors. I like that you appreciate what you've paid for. I can't afford a M1 but I will buy a 135i.
Certain cars just fit certain people, as a 1M owner, he nailed that summation. ✊👌
Love the livery! Great car!
Great passion from Adrian, really liked his admiration of the cars.
Lovely video guys and a nice back story to go with it... I have an old E89 35is Z4 with the identical engine, so I should take care of it and appreciate it more...
The last car from an era where all BMWs (especially this one) were special to drive, not just relative to the competition, but absolutely. I used to have an E60 530xi 6MT and was absolutely smitten. A BMW inline-six, manual gearbox, and hydraulic power steering results in one hell of a car
Enjoyed this video,thx for sharing.
Keep driving my dude!!
This is awesomeness! I drove one few years back and love that thang! The smile it gave me was owweee ! Just thinking about it now makes me smile! I must own one ! 😍 great story , awesome looking car!
Same here! Once you drive this car, it's a desire you never forget!!!
Amazing car ... cool guy, you can tell he really likes his cars!
What a car.
--Michael
He seems a really nice guy...good luck to you mate
A Black guy!! Only the 2nd one(or 3rd) ever on Petrolicious. ✌🏿
It's hard finding a proper black automotive enthusiast.... Usually gaudy.... Same with Mexicans.......always rocken that gaudy slammed shit from japan, or rocking some lame ass drift car with florescent knockoff rota wheels ..........
society tells us all that these type of cars are for old white men. not everyone can go against the grain and start to look into things that “aren’t for them” and people would judge them for, so shout out to all of us lmao
I Feel u, got one too and enjoying it daily, traction completely off is now a must and so addicting especially on corners :p
Philly to California. Same here. See ya ✌🏾 in the canyons.
Great video man. Love the decals, really enhancers the Alpine White. I myself have just bought a Valencia Orange 1M (first ever BMW) here in the UK, & love it. Just getting my head around the car & maintenance issues that these engines come with.
Fantastic car fantastic roads, want to go there some day, all the best
He is right things are built to be used. And people are here to be loved.♥️
That Carhartt x junya watanabe jacket tho
This man is literally living the DREAM!
One of the last M's with the awesome BMW hydraulic steering. Great cars!
Wonderful piece. Connected with this on many levels.
Well done! This is a great example of the passion, and the enjoyment that can come from the connection to a car. I feel very much the same with my Cayman. Not a lot of horsepower, and there are much faster cars out there, but there is something wonderful about the experience and rowing through the gears! These are cars that were made for the enjoyment of driving....no other larger purpose than that.
I miss these videos, its been awhile since ive watched one
I love how diverse car enthusiast are. This video also makes me wish jordan made a drving shoe
@Christopher Palmer I think 1s and 2s would work well with a slim high quality material construction. They already got the 2 decons
Cutest looking bmw M car but still has a lot of power, love it!
Very well done video and one of the greatest car ever produced hands down!!
Saw this guy at Newcombs Ranch today. Super cool guy
I work at a Honda dealership and have driven all versions of this car(trade ins). Absolutely love this model!! I'ts a small car, but feels like a big muscle car. I can totally relate!!!👍✌
Cool car Adrian, thanks for sharing.
Beautiful BMW. Great owner 👍
Nice Car! I want one in the Valancia Orange !
I am thinking of selling my e46 m3, but this video makes me reconsider. If petrolicious makes a video with an e46 m3, I ccx will definitely keep it!!
Hard to find a more modern replacement for it that can do the task. Even the M2 Competition - however great car it is - doesn't offer that oldschool raw driving pleasure a well-kept E46 M3 can. Different era, different feel - definitely much more involvement.
You have the best car and you want to sell it!?!?
If you can, keep it.
Caesar, this is your future self talking! Don’t sell the E46!!
Keep the E46. Or sell it to me ;-)
What a wonderful video!
Awesome car, cool dude and great video 👍🏻
Great story Adrian. For those reasons and passion, BMW (M240) fits me just the same.
Cool guy, nice car, great video.
The first time I saw and heard a 1M I fell in love immediately (I´ve never driven one... yet).
Amazing car, great taste fella!
The last great BMW. I love the 1 series. I have the 128i, but I REALLY want a 135i with the M-sport package.
Don’t - it will eat you alive. N54 owner with 6 years of ownership here.
@@OneMonster Elaborate, please.
@@dallasbagley in a nutshell, N54 engine owners suffer from Stockholm syndrome. When they work, it’s brilliant. But they hardly ever work and often they suffer from catastrophic failures like serpentine belt being sucked into the engine basically ruining the crankshaft oil supply system, vanos failures, injectors, turbos, you name it. It’s a pretty much a blind walking the minefield. Still, fun to drive (when working). Some hints on my channel.
“This one fits me”... respect!
Thanks Petrolicious, Really !!! 🙏🏻 See my car in one of your videos ... what a pleasure 🤩 This car has seduced me since its manufacture (2011). I like look, these curves, yes it is a baby monster ! It also has a lot of flaws (brakes, suspensions, clutch, chargepipe) but it makes its charm. It's a petrolhead car ! You have to like to do mechanics and improve performance to clear faults. The N54 engine is full of torque and accepts a lot of power. Manual gearbox, rwd, small, good weight distribution ... few copies ... Yes this car is unqiue ⭐️ Few current cars offer identical specs and as much passion behind the steering wheel. Thanks BMW for creating this little monster and thank you Petrolicious for including it in your RUclips channel 🙏🏻
One of the best vids I've seen
Nice car, beautiful sound. Why is the turbo sticker back to front? Cheers! 👍🏻
awesome video and great story. you should be a spokes person for BMW
Dope story and interview! Well done
When I grow up, I want to be like Adrian. See you on Angeles Crest!
awesome video, this guy gets it. Beautiful car.
Beautiful Car. Love the 1M.
A real car guy👍🏼👍🏼
Great car and what a nice guy. Love it!
Great video!! I feel the same way about my 2018 M240i
You can tell this dude has got his shit together. Great vid!
MShop cameo! Good folks doing good work over there. 1M is dope - maybe someday....
perfect car
This and the V8 version are my two favourite BMW's on youtube
What a nice Video👍🏻 i love my e82 / n54🥰
Such a sick car.
The highest of fives, sir. Amazing car with an amazing story. Gotta try the ten thumbs-up agreement with my SO the next time I buy an icon. Cheers.
Great vid. Cool owner. One of my dream cars for sure.
