Incapable of metal? W R O N G. I think we forget just how neutered old rock amps used to be; really having to dig into the strings to get more saturation... this little guy is a beast! Definitely more capable than just rock and clean. Engl has to be in my top three amps for consistent build and tonal quality, and the Mini Morse is no exception! Great video, dude!
Yep. I remember. Then I got the 5150 when it first came out and it was like Woah! Before that it, for me, could be a struggle with other amps to find the combo of stuff to get me there.
old rock amps weren't neutered, they were just the sound of the time, that's the beauty of the changes of music through the years, not all amps need to be heavy metal monsters.
That's a rocking amp Jon. Companies are really starting to get the sounds of the bigger amps in smaller, lighter and more volume friendly packages. Love it mate!
Great content once again. Your riffs are super sweet 🤘🏻👍. Yeah the clean sound is amazing. I just got my first Schecter guitar 4 days ago . A Hellraiser . Definitely gonna buy another Schecter . What great guitars . Thanks again Jon for all you do for us out here in the inter zones .
The Ironball SE is a phenomenal platform (so much so I'm selling my Helix floor, this is a viable replacement). This guy sounds great for that pushed overdrive/rock tone but noticeably tamer than the SE, which I think has it's place in the ENGL lineup. Phenomenal demo tracks, you really made this thing shine!
Sounds fantastic recorded. I agree with what you're saying. It got dark really quickly when you pulled back the treble, and that brief moment with max treble sounded awesome. Max treble was probably rough in the room but it sure worked with the mic haha. It handled the lower tuned guitar really well. I wouldn't buy this for the really aggressive metal tone that I love, but it does a great hard rock / metal tone nevertheless
Jon!!!! This amp seem pretty awesome! I'm liking the rock vibes from it , especially with that crunch tone was really nice. Also I was thinking the same thing with the EQ pedal to compensate for a missing presence knob. Great minds think alike haha. Awesome video dude 😄
@@melodicmetal2155 It can do metal very well if you go the lead channel, but as Jon said in the video right after I typed my comment. It's a REALLY dark sounding amp. And I'm more used to a standard EVH 5150 Stealth. They are very different voiced amps. It's all preference tho.
Big Steve Morse fan and I'm a jazz guy - but I like to crunch too. Love the baritone but I can't appreciate it on my phone. 🤓 ...but as I have a couple, I know how it sounds. Cool vid!
Nice! Well played and great amp. It would be appreciated to see more riffs based on long fingering sections. Yeah, I know how funny it sounds ;). But riffs kinda like Raining Blood type would be totally welcome next time. Greets!
Other than the difference with the Presence control, is it all that different from the Ironball SE? What would make someone pick the SM over the SE? Other than being a fan of Steve Morse, what would be the point of spending an extra $150? As always, a GREAT demo. EDIT - Steve Morse is on my Mt Rushmore of guitarists. I saw him back in the 90's (with Dave LaRue on bass and I think Van Romaine on drums) and it was jaw dropping. I went to his guitar clinic before the show and he was so easy going and humble. Truly a highlight of my life.
@@SonicDriveStudioWhilst I can tame my SE to sound similar to this amp. I dont see it the otherway around. The amp is voiced too dark to ma taste. It was aparent when hearing the mic'ed can which is my preferred way of recording but this sounded worse then your IRs. I also like glassy cleans the SE can do.
Comparing this amp to the Ironball SE which one is more diverse , can the Morse 20 keep up with the SE for metal tones ? , also what’s your take on the presence knob being on the opposite channels of these 2 amp heads what are the pros and cons with this . Unfortunately I like both smooth and warm and aggressive metal characteristics, So it’s hard to decide Not having the opportunity to play them both side by side.
Great review but I don’t think this amp is for me.Never was a fan of Steve Morse tone, great player but just not distinctive enough for me.And that’s how I feel about this amp although really loved the cleans and features.I may change and consider it.
@@SonicDriveStudio yes the end part is what I wanted to hear 😀. IR sound like a real cab and I use them when I am not playing with a real cab as it changes ths dynamics which is not what I particularly like. Thx for a great review

Have you seen the Invective 112 combo yet? I can barely find any videos on it. There is like no hype on it, but it seems insanely awesome.
I'm petitioning to see more solos in the demo tracks. That was very clean and tasteful.

Smaller amps, bigger prices
Now we need an ENGL Ironball SE vs SM 20 video 😄 Great demo as always! 🤘
Awesome. Literally just saw Kyle's demo of the full size version. Couldn't ask for a better duo to introduce me to an unfamiliar amp line.
This is an absolutely incredible sounding amp!😮
Oh the clean tone demo is just wonderful! Great choice of notes, just beautiful
ENGL does it again, as usual! 🤘
Hell yeah man! Hope you're doing well!
I love your versatile guitar playing and especially the great song arrangements. Goosebumps always again...
Thank you!
Nice and creative riffs as always!
This amp handles low tunings perfectly.
Good job!
Thanks!

FINALLY!!!! A solo!! You should definitely do a solo in videos from now on. I thought it would never happen. 🎉
Aweome demo my friend! You definitely need to play leads more often like these! Loved it!

So many back panel options. Very cool lunchbox head!
Very cool indeed Mr PooNinja!

Cheers my dude! Yeah, you could always put an EQ in the loop for extra flexibility, not a problem!
Used to have the big boy Morse amp, eventually sold it because it was not my sound at all, but it was a really great amp.
hi. so its not for metal?

For me the main SELLING point of this amp is it's not an edge of break up. It's a clean clarity tool option.
Great review

I likes it. Not bad priced for the feature set
Just when I was watching a video where people were laughing about how expensive the big version is! Timing!
A comparison between the morse 20 and the ironball SE would be very interesting.
ALL THE SWITCHES!
This sounds way more aggressive than anticipated. But it has something cool going on. Different high mids but that typical ENGL (lower) mid scoop
Try it with overdrive pedal in front bro. I think it can do modern metal well as well. :)
Engl takes no prisoners with this one.

The morse is a thicker sounding amp, with a more smooth top end, better suited for leads

Why not demo the internal load and IRs? I feel like that's a pretty big oversight on your end.
Maybe the internal loadbox with your favourite IR is better, or equal or maybe worse than your RedSeven load box. Would be great to find out.
@stiman1 resistive loads in general don't sound as good as reactive loads
So, is the "Classic Crunch" demo section the clean channel with the gain cranked?
@@bradtabor8699 no, it's the lead channel with lower gain
🔥
I just bought the Ironball SE like 2 weeks ago... I kinda like the sound of this one better though 😅😅
They would compliment each other very well 😊
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh angry mids without sounding too harsh & compressed :)
Exactly! Very smooth top end!
is it loud enough for rehearsing and gigging on stage?
Electro voice IR demos someday please
I've never tried one that I liked
whats the difference in the basic sound vs the standard Ironball ?

Which you prefer , this or iron ball?
Mini-Morse! 🤘😎🍆
For home playing… no more bands.. just me… this, the fireball, mini recto or 6150?
It sounds good but the price tag is too hefty. You could get 2 100w Iconics for that price
sounded extremely blue
@@EytschPi42 blue = noice!
Does it sound as big as the Fireball 25?
Sure!
@@SonicDriveStudiothat's a huge claim since the FB25 uses 6L6's while the IB uses EL84's.
How different is it from the regular Ironball SE? Features seem identical so the difference is in the voicing?

how do these amps take overdrive pedals in front of the amp...?
Very well

I wish it came as an actual mini head in a tolex cab like the fireball 25. These look cheap to me, no matter how they sound.
OMG
Cool amp but $1,600 ? Nahh I'm good with my fireball and boss katana
I dont get what is the point of using an IR with a tube amp? I would like to hear the amp as is through a normal cab
Check the play through section at the end of the video for a "real" cab. Having said that, IRs sound like a real cab.

Pretty much the same amp as the engl special edition ironball
Nope, looks similar but sounds very different
Just shares control layout, sound wise it's much smoother.
@@givemeajackson But if I was going to choose the one that is more metal.I guess I would go for the iron ball correct

What? Why?
@@SonicDriveStudiothe took the ironball and switched the front panel…
And completely revoiced the amp too!
