Hi guys did you happen to notice if there was still a sculpture of a foxes head as part of the war memorial ?, the. story as I remember it, Is that the aircraft crashed in a snowstorm, the airman who survived took shelter by the wall for a while, but knew that he wouldn't survive for long in the snow, with the injuries he had sustained, he decided to follow the wall, after a while he saw the footprints of a dog in the snow, & thought where there's a dog there's probably people, he followed the tracks over walls & through gates they eventually took him to a farm, he woke the farmer in the middle of the night, the farmer initially took him for a German, eventually they began to understand each other, when the airman explained that he had followed the footprints of the farmers dog which had brought him straight to the farm, the farmer replied that his dogs wouldn't go out in the foul weather, But a fox often came down & raided his chickens. The airman had the fox included in the memorial as he concidered that the fox had saved his life on that fatefull night. The story goes on to say the airman came to live in England after the war & carried all of the materials for the memorial up there himself, apart from the bits of the wrecked aircraft which are included in the memorial . I didn't notice the fox in your video, it was on the left hand side close to the bottom, Its many years since I was up there, it could have broken off or been vandalised. I dont know how much truth there is in the story, but Its a great story & worth telling. If anyone knows if the fox is still there please set my mind at ease, & post a message here,
Morning Roger, what a wonderful story, wish i had known about it beforehand so i could have mentioned it in the video...it's stories like this that really add interest to a walk...i first noticed the Fox many years ago when we passed the memorial and yes i can report that it is still there [ wish i had taken a photograph of it]...its on a concrete shelf at the bottom of the monument along with lots of other nik naks and trinkets...Thanks so much for watching and commenting...really appreciate it.
Well done Steve & Karen!!! Blimey!!! It looks blooming cold up there by the trig point 🥶 Good luck with the other 26 summits on this challenge… let’s hope for warmer and brighter weather 😊
How different the weather changes too quick between the top and down area. Great to see totally different views out there. Really gorgeous. Just admire you guys👍👍Thank you for this fantastic sharing 😍❤️👍🤗🤗
That was very beautiful up there, wow, looked windy and cold, great job. The old ruin looked amazing, great spot for lunch. Magnificent views. Hearing and seeing the stream was beautiful and relaxing too.
Loved this you fabulous pair! Steve telling you Karen not to look at the camera made us laugh! (Nick is forever directing in my ear shot 😂) love how you steam ahead Karen with two things on your mind, getting the walk done and that promised beverage at the end 🫢😂 loved the snow! Great walk this! Well done on bagging number 4 of the Dales 30…26 to go and excited to see! 💝
Yeah...dont look at the camera, i wondered if anyone would hear that, i knew that you two would...like me you don't miss much...as always "Thanks Jill"
Nice humorous start Steve with Karen answering your question to the viewers. Looked bloody cold and windy up there, you need a wind muff for the mic. At least you’ve not lost yours glove. Lovely views down into the valley and a nice pint at the end, what could be better. 👍🍺
Hi Mike...yeah she does it everytime [ really gets my Goat]...Very windy up top... a suppose a mic would be a good idea, but then it's something else to breakdown..maybe i need a good production manager like what you have...cheers Mike
Hi both well that was beautiful but not very good weather for you ! Loved the face for Chris 🤭 and that was a sad but lovely memorial up there and the views were amazing. Bet you were glad to be in the pub by the fire. The dog beer was so cute ! ~ Anna 👍
Hi Steve great walk this, it had everything from snow and mist to beautiful valley scenes coming down, not forgetting the war memorial and mines one for me one day cheers nigel
Beautiful views as you set off. The weather sure did change as you got closer to the summit. Looks fun in the snow at the top. Looks cold up there mind 🥶😊
Hello, you two Eskimos that looks like a very cold Walkabout and windy like how you send Karen in front to find the slippery bits 🙄 🤣😅🤣 buying the Girl a drink in the pub well deserved nice one 👍
The views walking up from the valley looked class Steve 👌, but them views went sharpish when all that snow and clag rolled in, I always think snow makes a walk 👍🤣, but it’s a shame yooze never had the view from the summit, great hike guys, atb Mick 👍
Looked a cracking walk, Steve! Clag seemed to clear later in the day. Always the way, isn't it 😁 Lead mine looked interesting. I love mooching about places like that, trying to picture what they were like. All the best and take care 👍😊
Yeah, pesky clag...of the 4 Dales 30 mountains we have done each one has had no summit views....i suppose thats winter in the Dales for you...Thanks for watching Des
Love it We live in a beautiful little area but we have nothing like that down here. The Dales are superb aren’t they and that was a fantastic walk - the conditions looked great. (Apart from the mud on the way down) Great stuff. Enjoyed 👍👍👏👏
Evening Dave...it's a 2 hour drive from ours but well worth it....going back up later in the week to do another [ staying at a pub overnight in Hawes ]...Cheers Steven
Such a lovely area and you picked a fine mountain to tick off this time again. I'm aiming to get back to the Yorkshire Dales area again just before Easter if I can clear enough days to make the long drive worthwhile. You had some chilly weather with the frost and ice around. Stunning Steve, thanks for another most enjoyable video. Take care, cheers, Warren :)
“Dont look at the camera” 😂 we are having gate envy now, what is this? Double gates! Loved every second of this Steve, as always Karen eagerly leading the way, somehow remembering the early days where you would have conquered every Wainwright before RUclips. But this is an incredible timeless record of how you choose to spend your time now. Its the perfect memory that could never be captured again. We loved every second. A perfect day in the Dales. May there be many more ❤
Gate envy..love it...always love your comments Nick...there will be many more to come, in fact we are back up there tomorrow to do a couple more [ staying overnight at a pub in Hawes ]...im getting excited just thinking about it
I had a similar day on the lakes last Saturday, no snow mind but it was on the high fells and looked like it could drop at any second. Looked a real cold one as well in that wind, now wonder your young lass was struggling a bit. Never seen that war memorial before but good to see those Polish airmen are still remembered. I'll bet it was nice to drop down off the tops and a very well deserved pint at the end, cheers Alan
Buckden Pike is a cracking hill Steve, I was going to ask about the fox head memorial... but noticed Roger (below in the comments had beaten me to it! It was a bit inhospitable on the top! It used to be a right paddle across the top, better with those flags I'm sure. Great video, thanks for taking us along 👌 TFS, cheers Alistair 👍
Afternoon Dan...You are right, just as our thoughts begin to turn to spring, the snow turns up again...not that i mind because i love the snow...cheers Steven
Nice to see a new one from you and your good lady. It's amazing how much difference there is in weather in a few hundred feet. You really made me laugh out loud there Steven, thanks for the shoutout. I see you had some of our wind, too. But at least you weren't chasing your hat. Another great vlog. Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed it.
Evening Chris...yeah the old there's me face was a spur of the moment thing...Yeah it was pretty windy up there, but nothing like we had on our walk...We are going back up there later in the week for another walk...Cheers.
Cracking walk there Steve and Karen, fab views as you left Buckden and on your way back down again. Definitely rivals any Cumbrian dale. Wharfedale is one of my faves of the Yorkshire Dales too I would say. Sure seemed windy up on the tops there, although it still looked lovely in the snow. That would have been a well deserved pint afterwards. All the best 🍺
I think I have done 2 of the Yorkshire 30s. Looked a bit bleak up there in the wind and snow plus no views. Still it's bagged 👍Looked a bit nicer weather wise lower down and you got the views later on. Can't grumble. Thems the big hills for you 🙂
Hiya Steven, just realised how high the hills are!... 2000 feet... I'm originally from Moscow, but currently living in Minsk, and here you won't have hills this high. Would be lovely to travel to the UK and climb one! Sorry, I'm a bit curious, maybe you know if there are younger RUclipsrs from GB who are into hiking, camping and stuff like that? Although I do understand these activities aren't that common among people of my generation even here, but I'm sure there must be some in the UK too. Just would like to add more variety to my RUclips feed. Cheers, and say hi to Karen for me! Mike
Hello mate....good to hear from you...one channel of young youtubers you could take a look at are Tom and Joe vlogs, they like their walking and camping...thanks mate...i said hi to Karen
