Being the CHEAPEST BLU-RAY player definitely helped them win the sales title. And another HUGE benefit of the 360 was it's dedicated SCALING chip, which actually made the GPU even MORE POWERFUL since resolution scaling was 'free'& automatic'! While on PS3 developers had to worry about programming the GPU to support different output resolutions.

The 360 had a great online experience that I’m still longing for its return. I don’t know why online games have gone backwards in that regard. Also, the HoloLens app was amazing for understanding what was happening in the early seasons of game of thrones. It was a map and would switch in real time where the characters were at in that very moment in the story. It also would show additional information of the characters. It was great and interactive that doesn’t exist today. My point is, consoles had so much potential and promise that doesn’t exist anymore. Sony and Microsoft have lost what made the consoles great to have. It seems like they think celebrating the alphabet mafia is what makes gaming fun. I miss old days where gaming was made for the gamers and not forcing dogma.

I thought the most forward thinking component to the PS3 was the ability to swap HDD. I popped an SSD in mine and Rage has almost no pop in. Other games win installs also benefited. Of course audio is much better because of the blu ray disc size and the fact Sony wanted the machine at launch to play just about everything; DVDs, blu rays, CDs, and super audio CDs. It didn't have a great library at first and it didn't do well for years, also because it was overpriced. It took a whole make-over and re-marketing, plus a significant price-cut, to basically re-launch it back in 2009, about 3 years after release, to get people on board with it. That was the PS3 Slim and Kevin Butler era, which even pulled myself in as well. - Cause while I had a PS2 before that, I also kind of glossed over the PS3 at first, as I didn't feel the need for it, but then the Slim was a way better deal, with a lot more interesting games for it, with the matured software, more compact console itself, and better price. Oh, and it helped that it had a Blu-ray player, but mine died years ago, so... great.

Moving to the PlayStation 4 must've been such a breath of fresh air for studios like Naughty Dog. - Not to get like pretentious about them, but they were already so ahead of things with what they were trying to do with games like "Uncharted" (at least 2 and onward, though even 1 was pushing conventions here and there) and of course "The Last of Us", it probably didn't help at all that the PS3 was so difficult. It's amazing what they managed to achieve with those 4 major titles on the PS3. - But then the PS4 came along and, due to exclusivity, they were finally able to really make those games shine or at least run properly, as the PS3 seemed to physically strain under them, especially with the ones they remastered. Though, then they squeezed the PS4 for all it's got yet again with "TLoU2", which in its turn is also amazing for what they pulled off with what was essentially already a 4-5 year old computer at the point they started full development on that game. - Then of course the PS5 lifted that up again, and so on. But it just gives context to those consoles and their tech.
Like... man... Imagine if 'Heavenly Sword' got a remaster for PS4 or something, then it wouldn't need to have such erratic framerates and look quite blurry at that. - I actually played that game when it was relatively new, but even at that time, while impressive for what it was, the framerate-drops and lower resolutions were actually a blemish upon an otherwise gorgeous game. Ninja Theory were just as much already pushing the boundaries back then, but clearly limited by that console. And also in their case it's amazing they got it done, but it just looks like it should've been a PS4-title just as well, even though it came out 6 years before it. - And I actually kinda love the PS3, it's special, but what a mess!

I don't think the PS3 was ever overhyped, I just think it suffered from the same problem a bunch of current gen suffers from, namely the studios chasing large install & a flat dev structure. The CELL stuff did do a bunch of things other hardware couldn't, and it basically iterated on the PS2s design in the Emotion Engine. The PS2 had a similar stilted launch dev wise, but people got on board and by the end of its lifecycle everyone knew how to get the best from it. The PS3 didn't have that luxury because Microsoft went the route of Power PCs, and Steam became a big player in the market for the first time. It was suddenly much easier to basically make a game for PC that ported easily to 360 and vice versa than learn a whole different architecture and optimization pipeline.
I swear in like 5/10 years you'll suddenly see a huge uptick in "what the PS3 was really capable of" port videos, a la the current N64/Dreamcast ones, purely because the industry will better understand what they were going for & more people will "get" the hardware.

The GPU on the PS3 needed to fill in the blanks. But as a whole the PS3 could do more than the Xbox360. No games on the Xbox360 could touch Killzone 2, God of War 3, Uncharted 2, Infamous 2 etc. Halo 3 didn't look good to me, it was just Halo 2 in HD with few added effects. Gears of War was downgraded heavily from the original techdemo on PC and was devoided of all colours.

The Blu-Ray drive was the single most expensive thing inside the PS3 at the time and would've jacked up production costs for the 360 too if it had one. At best Microsoft might've been more likely to suck it up and retail at a lower price due to their deeper pockets, but it would've been up in the air after how much they lost for years retailing the OG Xbox cheaper than it should've been to stay competitive with the PS2.
Keep in mind, a big part of the 360's appeal at the time was that it was a significantly cheaper alternative to the PS3 as a game platform.

Spider Man 2 would be the same since the speed you move at is reliant on the drive and system being able to load quickly enough out major pop in.. so minimum pc requirements will need a good ssd and probably more reliant on very good VRAM.

Ken Kutagari wanted to continue unique HW legacy of the PS2 with the PS3 and let devs and programmers to squeeze every single drop of performance hard way through well optimized code, however the PS3 design was rushed in the end with the Nvidia GPU and it all end up in a kind of mess which wasn't the original plan. Also the new paradigm was becoming popular which started with the original Xbox and continued with the Xbox 360 to give devs HW they r familiar with from the day 1 and let them optimize their code and tools to squeeze out of it as much as they can. Now with the best AAA video games costing multi million dollars to develop the general purpose HW and architecture is the ONLY way to move forward either by utilizing x86 or Arm based machines. Maybe in the far future we will see RISC 5 chips but it will be very unlikely that consoles will get some unique chips like CELL or what PS2 had. This is the name of the game right now and it kind of make sense also to make video games mainstream and spread on as many devices as possible.

the architecture wasn't as "exotic" as you'd think - the Cell processor was based on PowerPC (same as the 360) and the GPU was an underpowered GeForce 7800. the limitation was the over-reliance on multithreaded processing, which was a new concept at the time. multi-core CPUs were a few years old then but applications were still largely single-threaded. it also didn't help that it wasn't truly a multi-core CPU; it was more like a Pentium 4 on steroids. performance was going to be pretty poor unless the developer knew how to load balance all 6 SPEs.

I had the same question and looked it up. IBM had been developing the Cell processor with Sony for awhile and Microsoft hit IBM up for their own processor for the next Xbox. IBM proceeds to basically show them the Cell processor, without saying who it is for, and Microsoft basically asked for a version that wasn’t a huge pain in the ass to use and they got a, still very good for the time, dumbed down version of the processor.
Basically Sony managed to eventually keep up years into the console wars bc while Xbox had a stronger GPU, the SPU’s on the Cell were really good at handling extra load/tasks when you know how to work them.
Sony formed a team of first party developers named ICE (no, not the government agency that kidnaps kids at the border) and those devs worked together to write documentation on how to squeeze the most out of the SPU’s for faster/better game development. I still wonder how much of that ever found its way to third party devs bc I feel like they had to have been given similar insights lol

My 2 cents is that this “trimmed” R&D bled over to MS not properly cooling the 360.

I don't believe there was a hype issue. Granted, coming off the PS2, anything had large expectations to build off of, but honestly IMO the PS3 at the end of its life delivered. It took some time, but I'd say Sony's first 3 consoles were some of the near perfect generation defining systems for its time. The PS3 was just such a slow starter in part because the HD transition was such a difficult transition for all the studios. It shifted the culture of development to what we mostly see now in toda's market to some extent.
From online updates, patches, microtransactions, downloadable games, etc. That combined with just learning to make games on the tech of this system was difficult. The Cell architecture processor probably never got its full realization with the purpoted Cell graphics chip that also never came about, but it did still some amazing things that makes me wish, to an extent, modern systems woud have SOMETHING unique about them that makes exclusive stand out on that system.
In the end though, PS3 was just too expensive for the market, and too bold to ask for that. Even Xbox One learned its lesson against the competition and suffered ultimately the same fate compared to its competitors. PS3 was essentially needing some humbling in the beginnings, but I believe Sony really learned a lot, and we had seen many great exclusives that made the system stand out and be unique in its own way. It was also the last system to really own the Japanese quirky side of Sony, because in PS4 they more westernized, and Nintendo's Switch seemed to have picked up that slack essentially, or rather be the last haven for it.

Gamers were left with Forza/Gears/Halo and 343/Black Tusk instead of Bungie/Epic.
Add the RROD console failures that had everybody’s 360 failing at least once until 2009-10, and the door was wide open with the PS3 Slim models, to get a PS3 in 2010 onwards and play through the exclusives that were excellent by that point.
PS Move was more of a ‘hardcore’ Wiimote in comparison to Kinect being more ‘wave your arms or dance’, so that helped as well.

I think more specifically what turned to be the right call was Sony approaching the Move as a side experiment rather than a priority like Microsoft did with Kinect which tanked hard after the honeymoon period.
I would even dare say Sony went in TOO well with exclusives for the PS3 in it's last 2 years or so and some of them could've been saved for the PS4, especially since it the PS4's initial good rep was mostly down to, well... not being the Xbox One or Wii U.

Main reason the PS3 out sold the 360
    1. RROD
    2. Blu-ray
    3. Hdmi
    4. Rechargeable battery
    5. Quiet
    6. Build quality
    7. Exclusives
    8. Free internet ❤
I was a big 360 fan. It did handle things better, but there were a lot of old gen tech on the system and the PS3 was very forward thinking.
For me the RROD was what hurt the 360 the most. I loved my 360, then my 2nd&3rd, by the 4th received in 2008. I babied it and it still ended up failing in 2018. My PS3 is still mostly fine.

The PS3 maintained hype partially because Digital Foundry wasnt available to show performance. Many people thought the ps3 was capable of running 1080p, and the 360 was 720p because very few people followed up and fact checked.
With that said Sony overtook in the end because xbox brand was damaged by the rrod and they stopped supporting the 360 sooner. Sony was selling ps3s for years into the ps4 lifecycle.

I feel like the PS3/360 era was the last true console generation. Once they switched over to PC hardware it definitely became more developer friendly, but a lot less exciting. The PS3 architecture definitely afforded it unique capabilities, if the 360 really could have just run everything to equivalence on gpu then we should have seen TLOU graphical quality on that system, and it should have came sooner due to easier to code for architecture. The PS4 and Xbone do have impressive ports for what they are, but it was definitely less exciting of a generation looking back.

The ps3 did outsell the 360 eventually, but the 360 outsold it for many years. I think the 360 had two big issues- no blu-ray, and the red ring of death. The biggest issue was clearly the red ring of death, but apart from that, I think the 360 was a much better console than the ps3. Sony managed to catch up, and I think in large part due to them doing the best they could with the hardware they had. The ps3 did have equal, or slightly better ability to do cool graphics stuff as the 360, but it took some time to show it, but they did show it over time, every year. Meanwhile the xbox team was fucking around with the kinect, and forcing Bungie to make Halo games for all eternity, just like theyre doing now with 343 and Gears with the coalition

Who would of thought you can have a device as powerful as a PS2 with the same rendering capabiliy in the palm of your hands back in 2005? Ridge Racer, GoW GoS, Crisis Core, and Daxter look even more impressive than any PS2 game we've seen.

  • @MegaGoat

    How did PS3 outsell 360?
How about the fact that 360s would be in a red ring crisis before people bought PS3s, the library didn't cater as well to people that were into JRPGs and female anime face games, the real world commercial product performance had flipped in favor of PS3 versions of games in the last few years, and XBox was losing momentum in core game development before the XBone as they chased shoving Kinect in everyone's hole.
Why did Wii outsell them both significantly?
    Branding issue?
    Europe at it again?
    People wanted it more.
    Live in reality.

I wouldn't say the Wii outsold both 'significantly', a large portion of the PS3's and 360's total sales were a split of the PS2's install base after all. That's not to discredit the Wii's success, just that the core gaming market was still clearly larger than what the Wii tapped into.
If they had sided with one of the PS3 or 360 more lopsidedly then one of them likely would've sold about as well as the PS4, give or take.

@@strykah92 More HD consoles were sold than Wiis.
Wii outsold the PS3 by a margin of over 13% of it's total.
      This is a significant margin.
The point was that people bought the hardware to play the games that were on that console.
Wii was the biggest seller because people wanted to play Wii games.
They didn't buy a console based on what some media nerds think they should have bought.
The media is frequently wrong, often intentionally.

You can buy the masses if you throw enough money at advertising and keep walking about how awesome something is.
