Half a century back, in early seventies I remember reading an article in a Bengali magazine written by a sports journalist (forgot the name). In that article he wondered whether India will ever be able to produce a GM. There was clear skepticism, and frustration in his writing. We have come a long way since then! We have 85 GMs!. And, both our men's and women's team are Olympic Champion! Feels so good!

Hikaru, I am impressed with your knowledge of Indian chess history. You are right, India had no chess culture to speak of till 1970s. Manual Aaron who became an international master in 1961 was the only International master in India till 1978.
Vishwanathan Anand, son of a Railway Engineer, showed flair for chess and spent his formative years in Philippines, then a chess powerhouse of Asia and home to Eugine Torre the only grand master from Asia.
Anand became Indian national champion at the age of 15 and kept setting new marks every passing day.
The fact that the first GM of India also became world Champion and inspired generations of Indians into chess is something that could not have been imagined even by the most optimistic Indian chess fan.
As an Indian chess fan, I have seen India becoming from a one IM nation to a double goldmedal winner in chess Olympiad. An Indian is also likely to be crowned world champion. All that is such a nice feeling for someone like me who has seen it all for the last 50 years.

I've won like multiple school competitions even without learning a thing about chess during that time. Now that after 2020 and so much exposure of chess. I learned so much theory by just watching videos and understood the complexity of chess.
I was playing this game for fun & games, just like many other Indian were and this is all cause of Viswanathan Anand and he get all the credit for making chess so popular that now we have the best players from India and more to come in next few years.

I believe Ding is trying to deceive Gukesh by playing like a 2650, maybe he doesn't want to leak his prep. Gukesh shouldn't let his guard down, Nepo was favorite as well but see what happened.

I also hv the same feeling I think DL is deliberately plying low and reserving his best for the defence of his title.

Manuel Aaron sowed the seed by creating the Tal chess club in Madras (it helped Vishy grow), 5 time world champion Vishy Anand built the basement by inspiring and mentoring the current pack who built the top by winning the Chess Olympiad. Vishy Anand gave the Chess Olympiad Gold Cup to India and it was very apt to see him giving the cup to the Indian team.
