  • Can the 2.7 Liter EcoBoost tow? Today we find out! We hooked up to a dump trailer leaded with fill dirt. The truck did great but the real question is how long will the 2.7 EcoBoost last while towing like this?
In my videos I compare the 3.5 EcoBoost to the 2.7 liter EcoBoost. both engines have their advantages and are great in different ways. comment below! thanks for watching!

The 2.7 seems to be plenty stout. Even comparing the Gen 1 engines, the 2.7 seemed to not have the timing chain issues that the 3.5 did. The block and bottom end design seem as stout as the 3.5. Perhaps the crank is stronger in the 3.5 as it is forged steel, but the 2.7 doesn't appear to be having any issues. I don't tow much so I would pick the 2.7 over the others right now, especially the 5.0 since it seems to be having oil consumption issues since 2018 and the 2021's will get cylinder deactivation (seems as though GM and Ram both struggle with issues from that). Love to see the ecoboost engines being tested heavy.

Remember both trucks are legal as long as your not over your GVWR or axles on the truck and your trailer is not overloaded you are legal. Manufacturers tow ratings are just for warranty purposes and a general guideline. You are DOT legal with the 2.7 as well, like I said as long as your not over on your rear axle. My only concern with the 2.7 would be the punishment on the small 8.8” rear axle over time.

If you don't stay within the manufacturers tow ratings good luck getting an insurance company to insure you after you crash your truck and kill someone. The axle might be able to take a heavier load as they usually do, but you're not taking into account the frame, and springs. All the big auto makers spend billions on R&D, and they're good at what they do. you're also paying for their knowledge and expertise so why not trust them and stay within your trucks capacities, why risk it?

My 1979 short bed f-150 4x4 c-6 with 3:50 gears and a healthy 400m pulling a 24ft gooseneck with backhoe loader was more of a max load. My 95 chevy 3500 with 4:10 gears a 5.7l engine and 5 speed pulling the same trailer with 1400b turbo 4x4 jcb backhoe with loader was no better than the f-150. 3500 had better rear and springs but the 400m had more power. That 2.7l with a 10 speed is what I needed! Maybe add some load leveler rear bags, a trans cooler and better rear. 9inch was the week link in that f-150.

The car salesman I had when I bought my 2020 EcoBoost 3.5, just to see he talked me into test driving 2.7 with 5 and a half ft bed well I did. I thought it did 0 to 60 quicker it might just have been me though. Either way if you dont use the 2.7 for work as in tree work lawn mowing or what ever it in tails pulling a trailer over 6,000 it'll be more truck than a person just driving it for a regular vehicle would need. Ford trucks are expensive for a reason they are the best truck on the road compared to GM, RAM, Toyota also, I had a 2013 fx4 EcoBoost and I had 152,000 miles on it in 7 years I owned it. I never had a problem except I did a tune up at 96,000 and there was a bad spark plug gap had misfire in cylinder 4. The breaks did good also I had 100,000 miles on it of towing a little over 5000lbs only changed them once. But the Goodyear tires they come with are mediocre.

If you ever get pulled by the DOT, don't say a word :-).
Anyways, I am watching the F150 videos as a want to get one. Thanks for sharing your experience. Btw, I don't think you were badly overweight. Depending on your rear axle ratio, and your chassis length, the 2.7 ecoboost can handle anything from 12,300 lbs to 14,300 lbs in the GCWVR category.

It’s not surprising to me, the Nano has a ton of power. The hitch on the 2.7L is only rated for 10,000 lbs😳. Before you hook up the F-250 shovel some dirt to the front of trailer especially on a highway. That back tire on the trailer is taking the majority of the weight. I will be very interested in watching the F-250 pull that load, it will do so very easily. I still think the 3.5L would make a great base engine for the F-250. And you are right, the 2.7L trans has never seen that amount of weight and was learning how to shift with that much weight. Just my opinion. Peace

Yep, I just bought a 2018 2.7. 6700 is the correct number. that engine is a hoss for sure, but abusing it makes no sense.

My 2016 F150, 5.0v8 I bought it with 18 miles on it. I put 80k miles on it, 90% of its life pulled hard and heavy loads, never did a dang thing to it. Might have changed the oil a couple times. Ran hard put up wet.!! Just traded it for the 2.7 2021 F150 time for a real stress test. hahaha

@@dscoutdoors5341 I'd say No. Its probably too much tongue weight and pushing the limits of the truck. 250 at least.

I Pulled a 35hp diesel, front lift tractor with a heavy bush hog, I figure is was close to 8500, with trailer and all.. Ran it about 3 hours north, I wouldn't do over 65mph .
