I doubt you'll read this, but I just wanted to say that I found your show last night genuinely moving. You were fantastic. And singing "Farewell to Welfare" in Josie's 1940s detective voice really works.
Thank you so much for all the lovely comments - I can't believe how many views this has had since I've been asleep! Maybe it'll get all the way to Nick Clegg! ;) Thanks so much to everyone who has shared it somewhere, I really appreciate it. As for a US version - i'll try anything once... :D xxx
Hi Grace. First of all, brilliant song! You couldn't have chosen a better figurehead for your political message. Secondly, I'm going to show your video to my Year 8 class as an example of Emily Davison's legacy even this far into the future. I look forward to seeing more from you in the future. Yours, a very appreciative History teacher.
wow! i love grace petrie!..i mean not in a weird way, i hope, but just the music and the sincerity and integrity behind it move me a lot..cant wait for the next album :-)
this is a genuinely fabulous song in my opinion, on so many levels. Looking forward to seeing more constituency office performances. Perhaps you could serenade some voters in line at polling stations...?
Grace this is incredible! Saw your stuff for the first time today and have spent the entire day linking it to just about everyone I know, your ability to blend powerful political lyrics with heart-wrenching chords is truly incredible. Keep singing and people will listen. This song, or possibly Farewell to welfare could easily be adopted by the masses as their anthem in these awful times.
i know its crazy but Emily Davison was actually related to me. Shes my great great great auntie.... im going a project in school soon based on her and im tempted to put your song in it because its really good, i enjoyed it loads! :p x
I just wanted to say if you get the chance to read this I saw you recently when you were at Summer Sundae, it was the first I'd heard of you so to be honest I wasn't sure what to expect it was absolutely amazing, as jokey as you are before/after songs you can just hear in your voice that you believe in what you sing about which puts you above most (if not all of the acts I've seen over the weekend)
Stark political wallop delivered perfectly. So heartening to see young people writing and performing this type of music. Makes this old folk singer feel more hopeful.
Wow! You make some really valid points, and I can tell from your comments and your interesting RUclips name choice that you're a really rational and reasonable person worth listening to. I can only envy your life, which must be full of wonderful things and people if you have a surplus of time to spend on researching me and my Twitter account, when you clearly don't like me very much. Thanks for your opinions! They sure showed me.
Original and entertaining, love it. Your lyrics reflect much of what's going on in my mind. Do you think I can have permission to use it in a non-commercial video on the suffragettes for my facebook page: "Nelson Mandela: I Dream"? I have a 5-minute section dedicated to Emily. Please let me know either way.
@anthonyernest1 The only way Clegg could prove without a shadow of a doubt that the country wanted his policy or opposed a rise in tuition fees would be a referendum on only that issue & considering the Tories want the policy they'e not going to do that. The only other way it could be on the table is if the LibDems had proper leverage on the Tories or Labour. That could only happen if Clegg had a significantly larger (or the most) number of seats. That's y changing the voting system is important
@anthonyernest1 I'm pretty sure he was true to the second half of the pledge of making the system fairer because i'm pretty sure the Tories would have abolished the cap altogether and made the system like the US. He's ended child detention, raising people out of tax etc. and the four main manifesto commitments are in the coalition agreement & being implemented.
@anthonyernest1 You clearly don't understand what happened at the election or coalition government. The election resulted in a hung parliament i.e. no party had a majority of representatives. No party could pass legislation on their own. Do you honestly think a party with 57seats could persuade either the Tories (with 307seats) or Labour (with 258seats) to scrap tuition fees or stop a rise in fees when they're both diametrically opposed to no tuition or a rise in fees. Of course not.
@prigg88 The point surely is many people voted LibDem on their pledge not to increase tuition fees and to abolish them if possible. Those votes were based on a, not if, but or maybe manifesto, but a signed pledge. He is under no illusion that he gained many votes on this pledge alone, but has cynically decided to support a party that is diametrically opposed to liberal values. if the man can't be true to his own pledges, what can he be true to?
@anthonyernest1 Do you even know what you are talking about? There is a difference between a lie & what Nick Clegg did. A lie is when you knowingly at the time tell someone something that you have every intention of betraying. That is the opposite of what Nick Clegg did! Clegg meant it at the time. The pledge was in 2 parts. 1. to vote against a rise in tuition fees (ok he broke that but he didn't sign it knowing he would) 2. To lobby govt for a fairer alternative which he didn't break.
@anthonyernest1 what does it matter that i like Torvill & Dean. They are national treasures. Details matter in politics just as much as the big picture stuff. I believe in justice for all just as much as you do & i know you'll only get it by changing the system & the only party that want to do that are the LibDems! As long as the system stays the same then govt & parly never have to listen to you or me.
Great song! But you are not Emily Davison, you already choose another way to "spread the message". The people just dont understand it yet. But with the collapse of our financial system they will wake up .....well forced to wake up. We need people like you to be there when it happens. you will be a freakin rock star , believe me ^^
yep, the last time this country had a chance to become a great example to the world, our votes got sold out by a leader who was only really liberal in the way he threw our hopes away.
@prigg88 His job as far as his voters are concerned, is to represent those votes in parliament. It is not to wash his hands of those votes and go his own way, we vote to be represented not sold down the river! I am not a student and have no vested interest but If I promise something, I stick to it, unless I really am unable to make good my promise through no fault of my own! Clegg is supposed to be a man of belief in his politics but chooses to toady to Cameron and has defaulted on peoples trust
@anthonyernest1 The only voters he represents in parliament are those of Sheffield Hallam. yes the students in that seat will probably not vote for him again. We all vote to be represented but the fact is that we're not. i would have voted LibDem but it wouldn't matter coz Lab still would have got in. i would have contributed to a Lab govt. Clegg couldn't make good his promise through no fault of his own. Do you want to know that he's making a difference - look at the Tory right they hate him
@anthonyernest1 BTW i'm Scottish & know your language better than you do! Says something about your education system. I have huge respect for you & what you've been through but i don't think the LibDems deserve what everyone's putting them through. The Tories should be getting more stick than they're getting. I'm not Tory but at the same time i'm not Labour even though i believe in clause 4 of the Lab party. I don't believe Lab do.
Prigg, Go Back to Torville and Dean! You ought to be a politician, The point is not based on the detail of the british language. But in justice for all! We Will fight you every step of the way and you will lose!! You have a modicum of Knowledge of the English language, but if Torville and Dean rock your boat, you are irrelevant!!!!!
Grace is my new obsession. I just love those lyrics. She hasn't a single song that's not amazing.
I doubt you'll read this, but I just wanted to say that I found your show last night genuinely moving. You were fantastic.

Release it as a single, if we can get RATM to number one and CATM in the charts (maybe number 1), we certainly can get a protest song there too.
@rlbgibbons Ooh! Let's get Phil Ochs's 'I ain't marching anymore' there! That has to be a number one!
@NKwame25 No, they didn't slip.. that was our countrys coalition leaders.

wow have a voice on you and your really cute :-) xx
LESBIAN? Omg how dare you. And I think you'll find I AM Emily Davison, as the song clearly demonstrates.
@anthonyernest1 Ok I mis-spelt win!! Rather mis-spelling than dodgy politics!!!
@anthonyernest1 BTW i'm Scottish & know your language better than you do! Says something about your education system.

Good song but I think it's exaggeration to the extreme! People live very well in this country!
maybe you do
