Well, I took my time getting this one on the review table, but the timing seemed right after the Nezumi last week. Be careful what you wish for. 16mm thick? Too much if you ask me. There is a reason why Mecha Q is so popular and so appropriate for these retro chronos. They are much more wearable and much cheaper as a consequence. Cheers, Jody

I genuinely don’t get the opposition to the meca-quartz. It’s a wonderful piece of contemporary horological engineering and really the only option for a chrono under £500. This just reinforces my bafflement. A very fair review - thanks for making lockdown in the UK tolerable Jody.
*Edit* I should also add that no criticism is intended for those for whom the movement is a critical factor in a watch. We all love watches for very different reasons. For me, the movement isn’t the determiner, its part of the wider recipe, but respect to all watch lovers out there!

@@earthenjadis8199 True, but a 12 hour totalizer is just as absurd. On the other hand, I found 24 hr. dials on Chinese mechanicals helpful for identifying am/pm when resetting a stopped watch, eg., Alpha Speedmaster. I also credit the Seiko 24 hr. dial with getting me interested in a 24 hr. Vostok, which has been impractical fun.

It's certainly attractive, shame about the bulk though. I'd personally rather take the meca just because it's thinner, even though a mechanical chrono is a real feat of engineering. Great work with the review Jody.

    • @1SaG
      @1SaG 4 года назад +5

That's what I thought before handling some of these watches. Then I found out that I didn't really mind the added bulk on the wrist - because I didn't find it all that noticeable. Had to remind myself that zoomed-in pics and videos tend to give a false impression and that they can exaggerate dimensions. I've had the Hamilton Intra-Matic Chrono on wrist (~15mm thick) and in the same week the Steinhart Paul Newman homage (a whopping 18mm thick). Both of which looked and felt absolutely fine on my smaller than average, 17cm wrist and I wouldn't hesitate buying either of the two.

... I honestly don’t know why they didn’t just whack an ST1901 manual wind mechanical in it and be done TBH!
But as far as the Seiko Mecha-quartz movement goes, and I’m wearing a Strela Chrononaut (a limited run of 200 re-issue / homage to the watch worn by Alexei Leonov during the 1st ever space-walk) which looks incredibly similar to this piece right now and I think that a meca-quartz offers the best of both worlds. I just bought my first mechanical chronograph since the one my parents gave as my first watch in 1971. A Bulova Accu-Swiss Tellaro automatic (65C116) with a Valjoux 7750 for $380 (factory refurbished). It is 14.5 mm thick, but has modern lowered lugs, so wears well with its bracelet. I have many analog quartz chronographs from Bulova, Casio, Citizen, Glycine and Timex. I really like my latest Bulova automatic chronograph but would probably recommend a quartz chronograph to most people. There are more choices, they are usually less expensive, most are lighter and they have features that are rare or not found on mechanical chronographs, like split timing and higher resolutions like 1/10, 1/20, 1/100 or 1/1000 second (although a human pressing a pusher is pretty much only accurate to 1/20 second, at the best).

    Seagull 1963 all day long.
I have an MWC 70s RAF pattern homage with the same manual wind Seagull movement... picked it up in a liquidation sale for £100 when they normally go for £250 to £300 if you can find them. Lovely cost effective movement but as you've seen. with the extra auto gubbins it gets a bit chunky.
I have a Porsche Design inspired (rip off..) watch from the 70s with the venerable 7750 in it by a company called Silvana. Love that watch and got it for the same price a cheap un-serviced 7750 movement alone would set you back. That was only a year ago.
Then we have my watch where it all started when I was 10 years old and found it a garage sale for $10 (Canadian dollars) - a deep blue reverse panda faced chrono with the Valjoux 7734 hand wind. Made by a company called Astoria... small brand that likely died due to the Quartz invasion. But this was 1992 or thereabouts when collectors weren't targeting these "junk" watches.
In summary - loads of great vintage chronos that can be had for less than £300... some of them with autos. So why buy something new for more money? Source a proper vintage watch with real period character.

I get the romanticism of auto or handwind chronos, but they are more delicate , expensive to service and accuracy can vary depending on how wound the watch is when engaging the chrono. I own a couple (one is COSC certified at +or- 10 seconds a year) and keep the crowns pulled when not wearing so, the batteries will probably outlast me. I generally enjoy and collect automatic 3 handers. But, my thoughts on cheap automatic chronos (or chronos in general) is that I would enjoy them until the first service when I would realize I never use the over complicated features and they would just sit in the box not running, and unloved. I hark back to your recent review of the Ali Express Dayton Homage that caused me to spend $70 on a watch that would give this one a run for its money. Except for packaging of course.

As a cheap automatic enthusiast, I can also tell you just get a quartz chronograph. Chronograph means timer. You want your stopwatch timer to be accurate or what's the point of it? Chronographs are only for a specific group of people anyways....most people don't need one beyond the smartphone. And if you do need a chronograph for your job....a quartz one will be provided for you....or it will be an automated electronic timer and you just need to make sure there's no power outage.

Personal cheap automatic collection is: Orient Kamasu Diver, Hamilton Khaki field (I got from a friend for $200), Orient Star Elegant Classic dress. Only 3 watches I really need. (Oh, and a G Shock for the gym and outdoor swimming)

Yeah-- it's a beautiful racing watch, but *too* thick... I think a (gasp!😲) quartz or manual movement would be the way to go...
    Thanks, Jody! 🖒😎

Jory, just got a Seiko SPC131 from Jomashop, on sale. price was too good to pass for a do everything watch ( chrono, perpetual calendar and alarm!) The dial is a bit crowded but with the usual perfect Seiko finish, rather look good if a bit busy. Only drawback, for a complicated dress watch, is the crappy Seiko wrist band. will be replacing it soon. Cheers, Richard

Microbrand should’ve use either Seagull or Poljot movement for lowering the mechanical chronograph he he. Chinese brand like Sugess already created a beautiful watch using Seagull movement for a “affordable” price.

I know it's more expensive, but I love my Hamilton American Classic Chronograph - retro looks, automatic and reasonably thin. List price is about £1900, but you can usually find them for about £1400 brand new online. Well made, good looking and great timekeeping. I also have an automatic speedmaster - but I haven't really bonded with it and it was twice the price......

That is an arm clock! I had a Daytona copy that did all that and the date and wasn't as thick as a crumpet. I gave it to a mate who had it looked over. Apparently it had a Seiko movement and from what I remember kept excellent time. I wouldn't wear this watch at any price.

A good alternative is the Lorier gemini. Its uses the ST19 manual mov't with a thickness of only 13.3mm

I hope it's a robust watch and movement because at that thickness you'd be accidentally knocking it on everything. Also thank you for not taking that bracelet out into the Sydney sunshine, you saved our sight!

I have a Zelos ZX5 with the 7750. Thick, but beautiful beast. Unfortunately the thickness means I bang it off just about everything I walk by. Also had a vintage automatic Citizen Bullhead like the one Brad Pitt wore on Once Upon a Time...They did that one right. Ultimately, I think a quartz chronograph is the way to go. Keeps the thickness and price down.

I often find myself frustrated by the thickness, and relative lack of wearability, of modern chronographs. A few years ago I'd injured myself on a ski holiday so took a day trip over to Biel and visited the Omega museum. Granted all of these would be manual wind, but they had some absolutely tiny mid-Century chronographs. And I don't just mean small diameter-wise, I mean thin. Some of these were designed for ladies so, given mid-20th century sizing you can imagine how small they were. The modern movements are pretty substantial - I guess this might be to do with durability and, of course, the rotor for the auto-winding - and a display caseback often seems to mandate a thicker watch, but I cannot sea any reason or excuse for a chrono, and particularly not a retro styled chrono, to be coming in at 16mm thick. If that watch were a manual wind - like the Seagull 1963 OG - rather than an auto, and came in at less that 13mm thick it would be a much better and more compelling piece.

Time to look at the Vintro chrono with the quartz movement at half the cost. And it's not really retro but I believe the Timex Fly Back chrono is a meca quartz at under $100. At least mine acts like it.

My watches range from $300-$3,000. My two chronographs are mecca-quartz. They have excellent fit, finish, and most importantly, they keep excellent time. Granted, they aren't as nice as my more expensive watches, however, they do what they are supposed to do and I have no complaints. 😀

Hi Jody. Big fan of your channel. Own lots of the watches you’ve reviewed (cost me money!!). Love motorsport chronos especially 70’s with both auto and MQ movements. Own 5 Christopher Ward Rapide chronos and last year picked up direct from CW a C7 Rapide Chrono Auto with a 7750 movement. It was a modern take and the case and face were distinct from anything else. Got it 50% off for £647.50 🇬🇧. Swiss made 42mm. Height 14.3mm. L to L 48.2. LW 22mm. 95g on leather strap. 316L. S/S & Alum case. 10ATM WR. 28,800 +/- 15 per day. Believe it’s now discontinued but they did have a few left recently. Love this watch on a brown leather rally style strap because of the 7750 inside. Check it out on CW Customer service/manuals website. Like all CW watches great quality and value for money when half price in one of their sales. Stay healthy & safe

The dial looks very good, and the german workmanship might make the watch more durable, but I think a Seagull 1963 Chronograph is much wearable and much cheaper as well.

Actually, I rather like the watch, apart from that garish highly polished bracelet! Depends on size of wrist (I'm not a huge guy - 7 3/4" wrist). Ive got a Tissot T-Nav auto chrono that wears a bit like a tank as well, but unless you are constantly swapping it out with smaller watches, you really don't notice. That said, I agree in part - it would have been more era-appropriate to keep the movement manual. But then more difficult to market? Not sure... perhaps there would have been a bit of cost savings to consider that could have been passed to the consumer. Either way, not the worst of the watches you've reviewed (two tone Seiko still has me gagging). ;-) Nice work, as always.

I have come to the conclusion that I, a poor person, isn't going to have an automatic chrono unless it's a sea gull.
I have been tempted by the Hoglund and Son MK2, it's also got a sea gull in it, the MK1 had a mecha quartz. They are both very affordable.
