  • Garmin's G600 controls the altitude capture in the TBM 700. This particular installation is overshooting the target altitude and waiting uncomfortably late until it begins to decelerate from vertical speed settings. Settings in this video were 3000 fpm descent from FL 270 to FL240. AIM indicates within 1000 feet of target altitude, pilots should maintain about 1000-1500 fpm maximum vertical rates to prevent TCAS alerts and controller alerts (and to give the pilot a few seconds to determine if the target will be captured). What we're seeing is that at 300 feet above FL240, the VS increases to a maximum of 2900 fpm and does not appear to decelerate until 200 feet above target. This capture function will leave the pilot wondering if the altitude will capture or blow through. Those high closure rates with other aircraft will set off alerts and alarms--both of which we've recently experienced.
