- Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring and mourning military personnel who died in the performance of their duties. Observed on the last Monday of May, it marks the unofficial start of summer. The holiday's origins date back to the aftermath of the Civil War, a conflict with the highest loss of American life, sparking a need to commemorate fallen soldiers. Various towns began holding tributes, decorating graves with flowers. One notable early commemoration was in 1865 in Charleston, South Carolina, organized by formerly enslaved people to honor Union soldiers who died in a Confederate prison camp.
In 1868, General John A. Logan, leading a group of Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance, "Decoration Day," on May 30. On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield spoke at Arlington National Cemetery, where 5,000 participants decorated the graves of 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers. Over time, Decoration Day gained nationwide recognition, and by the late 19th century, many states had made it an official holiday. The name gradually changed to Memorial Day, expanding to honor all American military personnel who died in any war.
After World War I, Memorial Day’s scope broadened further. In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, establishing Memorial Day as the last Monday in May, creating a three-day weekend to encourage greater participation in commemorative activities. Traditions include visiting cemeteries, holding family gatherings, and parades, often involving military personnel and veterans. A national moment of remembrance is observed at 3:00 p.m. local time.

So many have died to keep evil at bay - this Day is for them ... Flanders Fields.
Every male in my family serviced, they were fortunate to have come home! However, each lost friends while serving. We were raised to respect those who sacrificed. This is not a holiday of joy and shopping!
One has to be extremely alert not to absorb other people's ideas or demands.
