- Victor Davis Hanson is well known for his intelligent commentary and astute analysis of current events. But for his latest book, he tackles a topic related to his work on military history. It’s called “The End of Everything: How Wars Descend Into Annihilation.”
Hanson studied four historical examples of wartime extinction that he features in the book. Then he applies those lessons to contemporary society to examine our own vulnerabilities. The book is on sale today, and Hanson spoke with The Daily Signal to share his observations along with some advice about what’s at stake for the United States in the short term.

I retired from the military. I can tell you all exactly why recruitment is a problem and will continue to be a problem. And, honestly, I cannot understand why anyone would scratch their head about it?

@@kibun1 Did you play war in the woods as a kid? That's about all we did. By the Peace River, in Florida. 70's and 80's. But, back then, the older boys would push the younger boys to be tough and strong. It was part of the little military life we had going out in the forest by the rivers and springs. It's natural. What'd you expect, right? I mean, even a bunch of 7-10 year old boys knew it. Spend anytime in the military yourself? Maybe you already know. Toughness and strength, and technical capability and just general "squared-away-ness" is a thing of the past. Many young men will instinctively be repelled from military organizations that are weak. Another thing, let's look at the GWOT (the successor to the Cold War for the bankers and weapon's manufacturers) and the lies that led to Iraq, right? And then the withdraw from Afghanistan where the politicians and senior military leaders left 80 billion dollars in taxpayer-provided war fighting equipment on the battlefield to be scooped up up by the same men that OUR warriors were sent to fight for twenty-years... what does that tell our men (besides being a massive spit in the face)? That it was all about business? Because now all that will have to be re-manufactured and stowed back aboard our bases for the next lie they cook up. And who is left with the invoice? The American working man and woman, that's who. If you look at what President Eisenhower warned the people about upon leaving office you'll see he was being 100% honest and knew of what he spoke. Also, you look at militaries since the ancient days. What made the Spartan army so effective going into war? Think of Thermopylae when Leonidas was at the helm. Men could believe in their commander in chief because he was strong and effective and proven. Right? They wanted to fight for Sparta, for Greece. Think anyone in uniform, or any of our finest young men and women that you would WANT to be in uniform protecting The Constitution, look up to or respect in any way a degenerate and parasite like Joe? C'mon man! There is more I could say, but this is enough to chew on for now.

VDH is wonderful author. This will be my 5th book ( I’m 20 behind ). His podcasts, articles and books are very informative.
During reading The Dying Citizen I think I spent more time looking up words in the dictionary. It was a great book. Great author and historian. He is surely an American.

Died in a foreign country fighting for people who hate you and don’t want you there anyway. Fighting for a MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX. My sons were told that under no circumstance was I going to allow them to join the military. Too many veterans have told me that had they not been drafted they would not have gone and if they had any idea what they were getting into they would have gone to Canada. Stay here and fight.

40000 troops short eh..... well, the American people were asked a few years ago if they were sick and tired of being at war and they said they were. So now they are voting with their decline in military intake.
Who wants to raise a child to send them off to fight wars for the rich. To fight wars not to win but to make the military industry money. We won ww2 in 44 months. We were in Afghanistan for 20 years and gave then left millions in military equipment.

Every single super power in world history without exception has fallen, and we in the USA are well on our way after only about 250 years. We can correct our course, as many other nations have, but we are running out of time. The one common theme is a government’s inability to recognize and solve problems, and we are seeing that today. The problem with Iranian thinking (granted THAT is a subject as large as the solar system, but I digress) is Israel is not full of devout Jews. And no one seems curious about the government push to outlaw gas stoves and replace them with electric ranges, something they can control that much easier.

I love your work and purchased one of your books! But I have a complaint! Mentioning Russia as wanting to destroy Ukraine is way off target. This conflict had a solution until Joe Biden and Boris Johnson stepped in and squashed the diplomacy.

@@pawelpap9 I don't understand what you posted. To reiterate - I'm very concerned that the thesis by Mr Hanson, and his mentioning of Russia, implies that Russia wants to destroy Ukraine. The Ukraine Russian conflict is very complex. It does not fit the thesis - in my opinion.

VDH said of his example of the four historical military commanders that they were not like Genghis Khan, that they were "men of letters" so they thought deeply how to destroy a culture.. Genghis Khan may not have been "a man of letters" ( though he knew their importance, he employed them in his service ) ..the Khan also knew how to eradicate a civilization. The Mongols eradicated the Khwarazim empire, and it wasn't even in a state of decline but rather in its strength.
Of course all these go beyond the realm of men. The destruction of a civilization, the destruction of a nation is ultimately a judgment of God in accordance with His time. And He uses other nations even if they are sinful as well they are instruments of destruction. God knows of the kings and commanders who will do these and He lets them rise according to His time and purpose.

Fifty years ago I worked in an American educational institution. Tey had everything blooming. Great campus surrounded with a two fooT wall ( where some would go out and smoke ). To this day ex students look back fondly as the best part of their youth.
Now the place is still there and serves the same purpose. However there ore fifteen foot walls topped with razor wier and what was once a happy place is now a sterile and sanitized environment.
Violence will only give rise to more, in escalating order. Now there is no turning back. Gold cannot be paid back at the old agreed to rate , and the world will have to pay for the folly of a privileged people's arrogance.
Is there a leader with the colossal moral power to turn things around ? Remember it is relatively easy to push a boulder from a mountain top and reek destruction, but it takes effort of an infinitety greater magnitude to stop the rock in mid flight .

You lay the responsibility at the feet of privileged people, which is both Marxidt (whether whether not you are aware of that) and incorrect. Privileges are given by ordinary people, and they don't give them nowadays to moral Americans with traditional values.
The problem is not the privileged but with your neighbors and mine. They no longer go to churches and synagogues, swear in front of children and in public places, and pummel each other on airplanes and in the stadia -- Republicans just as much as Democrats. The color of underwater Kardashian is wearing today is more important for them than what is going on in their own country. Don't even ask about the world abroad -- they know nothing don't want to hear about THAT, arrogantly convinced that they are unaffected by other countries.

I forget who said it recently but it was someone very trustworthy and knowledgable like VDH, they stated that Europe will be overtaken by Islam. This person also said the reason is not just because of demographics, but because Muslims are willing to commit violence to reach their goals and Europeans (and Westerners in general) rely too much on the legal system.

Victor Davis Hanson sums up the tragedy and the intermittent glory of humanity so well. It's tragic and heartbreakingly stupid that so many people in the West are activists for its destruction. It's based on a ridiculous premise - that utopia is possible in this world. The pursuit of that phantom in the 20th century directly caused the deaths of over a hundred million people and a life of horror for even more who survived. Even in the 21st century we have the CCP locking up the Muslim Uyghurs and even greater numbers of Buddhist Falun Gong - because both of them place their beliefs above Maoism, which in a Utopia, of course, is not permitted.
Just look at the people voting with their feet in the 20th & 21st centuries. They are *all* fleeing from the corrupt, failed states of Absurdistan to the West. No one was trying to break *into* the Soviet Union, Maoist China, Nazi Germany, Pol Pot's Cambodia, or the numerous dictatorships around the globe. A bit of commonsense please.

Dr. Hanson's analysis is accurate and thorough. His prediction of utter destruction is depressing, but the situation is worse than what Hanson described in this video (if you agree with VDH's framing of the problem, and his proposed solution).
At the end of this video, VDH suggests a complete takeover of the federal government by Republicans is required to avert destruction. If Hanson's recommendation - which came across like a Hail Mary pass - becomes reality, it is unlikely to stave off disaster.
Recall that Speaker Johnson, a Republican, ushered through bill after bill in the 118th Congress, giving the radical Democrats everything they wanted. Half of Johnson's fellow Republican representatives voted for the bills shepherded to passage by Johnson, as did a clear majority of Republican senators! Please also note that former President Trump has repeatedly endorsed Johnson, so what kind of Republican government are we actually going to get? It is likely to look like the federal government when it was controlled by President Biden and Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Just like all of Dr. Hanson's examples of empires which expected help from their friends right before they were crushed, I suspect the Republican Party will play the role of useless friends to America, while the country is taken down by China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, etc.
