  • January in Southern Arizona is still a beautiful buggy and birdy time and for this episode we visit Patagonia Lake State Park. Though the leaves have fallen off many of the deciduous trees along the watercourse, the area is still filled with flowering plants that provide food for various insects and birds all winter long.
    A bug enthusiast all my life, birds are a new interest for me and Cassandra and her dog Roo accompanied me to look and listen and learn about the winter birds at the lake.
    During the day we sighted numerous birds including a gorgeous red cardinal which apparently is a bit out of season for the area. Capturing birds on camera is much more difficult than insects and most evaded the lens. We only got fleeting glimpses of bridled titmouses (titmice, if you will) which at first we thought were tufted titmouses, but through using various apps and websites and seeing images and listening to calls we begin to piece the puzzles together.
    We also observed house wrens which turned out to be canyon wrens, on account of, as Cassandra put it, "like a canyon goes down, the song of the cactus wren resembles a marble dropping down into a canyon."
    While January doesn't showcase the same diversity of plant and animal life that warmer months of the year does, I was still very pleased to make the short drive to this beautiful place and see so much activity. I'll take you back there in the warmer months for a comparison video, but for this Oregon native Patagonia Lake State Park is a wonderful escape into nature anytime of the year!

      @@bugsincyberspace I don't have a tv so I have never seen the show you mention but...it's called Beautiful British Columbia for a reason. @@teleking58 I've probably made a half dozen trips to BC over the years, mostly to Victoria and it's probably my favorite city in the Pacific NW in general. Alone is actually the only show I've watched in years, with the other being The Mandalorian. I only watch TV socially and never by myself so it's a bit of a rarity for me too. Of course, when I do watch it, I love it! It's just not quite as much of a draw as being out in the sun or visiting with the nocturnal creatures in the desert.

      @@bugsincyberspace I don't think there's anything wrong with watching television. It's just so pervasive that people frequently ask "have you seen...?" and I have to explain why I have no clue about so many TV based things. Victoria is nice enough. Has a Bug Zoo too! You've got a lot more island to see though. So many cool locations.

      @@teleking58 I don't suppose there is much different in watching TV or YT. Maybe it's what one watches that matters most. Harder to leave and receive comments back on TV though! ;)
      Coincidentally, I've got an email convo going on with the Victoria Bug Zoo today.

    i really hope i can make a trip out during vinegaroon season some time in the next couple years, it would be amazing to see one out in the wild
    beautiful dog btw, heelers are the best dogs for bug hunting because they're great off leash and those giant ears always point toward flying insects lol. i've got a red one :)

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  2 года назад +1

      The reds are gorgeous! A neighbor a couple properties away has one that trots a mile or so to the fire station each day, down the road through my property, for a snack and then back home. A gorgeous dog that the whole town knows and a fixture here in the landscape.
      We saw our first vinegaroon here on property last May. Bugguide had no records of photos for them in May or June, as I recall but we were seeing them here and in the local area w/o even looking much. When the rains come in July and through August, it's pretty much a guarantee you can go out and find one with little effort on any given night.

    I keep forgetting how up-to-date this channel actually is.

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  2 года назад

      I started the original channel back in 2008 and then took a good 5 year break and restarted the channel maybe 4 years ago now. The last year has been pretty busy with a very major move of home and business, but I'm finally starting to get settled in down here to a point I can start making some of the videos bouncing around in my mind. Need to do a fun aquatic insect tank video soon, as well as lots of other trip videos that I've taken clips through, but not yet strung together. Thanks S!

    ALSO what is the best time to go to Arizona for the most variety of insects or Reptiles?

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  2 года назад

      Monsoon season is when all of nature down here explodes. As soon as the rains come, the plants come alive and all the insects and their predators and their predator's predators come out of nowhere. July and August are the best months to see the widest diversity of living things out and about down here.

    i really wanna go to southern AZ but my parents are concerned about the border and how sometimes people just wanna GET IN and alot of crimes happen and i just wanna ask have you seen any of that sort of action or is it just pretty peaceful? i really want to know

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  2 года назад

      I first visited Southern Arizona in 2000, and than again in 2001. And then every few years thereafter taking a week or so at a time, each time. I remember those early trips and constantly thinking about how I needed to have my snake bit kit and keep my eyes open for snakes and scorpions and black widows and spiky plants. But each time I got down here I settled in so quickly and realized that it's actually quite difficult to find any of those things unless you are specifically looking for them, or simply have a chance encounter. And so my fears didn't quite match up with reality, but of course it made sense because the unknown or unfamiliar is always a source of anxiety. Of course caution is advisable, just in general, as we make our way through new places experiences.
      But, having said that, I've lived down here for 8 months now and I spend a fair bit of time in the field hiking around. It is my experience that much of what you see on the news represents statistical rare events, newsworthy ones, of course. I have heard stories but I have never personally had any legitimate reason to be fearful of living this close to the border. I mean, you can probably do some google searches and come up with a few random stories about problems on the US side of the border, near the border, but I have to guess they are very few and far between and that you'll find that crimes at all levels are considerably higher in whatever the major city in your own state is.
      Finally, as a parent, my favorite advice to give is "listen to your parents!" ;)
