- Patagonia Lake State Park in Arizona is an incredible birding destination, home to many local bird species, and hosts many rarities such as Rufous-capped Warblers and Thick-billed Kingbirds. Learn about what it's like to bird there, and see if we're able to find our target species for the trip: The Rufous-capped Warbler. Thanks to Caden and Eric for joining us as well!

Thanks to western bird specialist @Pauraque for pointing out that the bird at 9:17 is actually a Gray Hawk, not a Zone-tailed. Here's what appears to be the same bird, but in slightly better light from another checklist: ebird.org/checklist/S147279552
We camped close to the trailhead for a week last winter. No rufous-capped warbs in winter. :( But some favs were: wilson's warbler, plumbeous vireo, northern beardless-tyrannulet, black-crowned night heron, green kingfisher. Got a photo of a sharp-shinned hawk lurking at waist-level off that muddy trail. It's one of the birdiest places I've ever been.
Tyrannulet is a great find!
Nice birding Badgerland Boys! You always bring a smile to couple seniors who are big fans! 🐦
Hey there! I have been to Patagonia Lake State Park over a decade ago. It was March and I heard that an Elegant Trogon was in a mesquite grove there. Seeing the male trogon was amazing. I got excellent views for about 10 minutes before it flew directly low over my head! Happy birding, guys! 😃
That's awesome!
I am a birdwatcher from Massachusetts who has seen 182 species of birds so far.
Nice 👍
Ha rounding a corner and coming face to face with a grazing cow is a classic Patagonia Lake experience!
I’m glad you appreciated that 😂 I felt like I had to include it
You only get a Greater Roadrunner when you aren't looking for one! My favorite bird! Great video!
lol that’s so true
Such a COOL PLACE for birding😊 Great variety of birds and Congrats on spotting your the Rufous-Capped Warbler 😃👍 Awesome video guys😁
I loved Patagonia Az spent most of my time in town and at Patton center for hummingbirds and finally found the Varied Bunting on Blue Heaven road hours before heading out of town Spent a few hours at the Patagonia lake and watched a monsoon in the distance the drive to the lake was especially beautiful
I was at Patagonia Lake SP around this time, and my group ran into Derek and Nathaniel in a bunch of other places. (I got my lifer black witch moth with y'all in the rafters at Paton's!) My group whiffed on the rufous-capped warbler there, but we did see one later in the trip at another location. PLSP did bestow upon me several lifers - black and Say's phoebe, Bullock's oriole, dusky-capped flycatcher, and one of my absolute favorite birds of the trip: a common black hawk, which we watched pluck a tilapia out of Patagonia Lake. We heard about the mountain lion stalking people AFTER we spent hours in the woods at PLSP! That was almost more chilling than had we known it was there.
@@Tigerpuffer that Black Witch Moth was crazy!!! Glad you guys didn’t get taken by the Mountain Lion!
Derek when you were there at Patagonia lake state park did you go over to the Patton's afterwards and see the hummbirds , of and all the other birds in the Patton's yard ,
This location is always a good stop .
Yes we did! Will be included in another video
My favorite place. We’ve camped there several times.
Great video and some mighty good birding! Thanks for visiting Patagonia Lake State Park!
Thanks for maintaining such great parks!
This area looks awesome. Gonna have to add this to my places to visit now. The Rufous-capped Warbler looks so neat
That was an awesome place for birding. The zone-tailed hawk is my favorite hawk species.
Cute little bird! I see pine warblers and yellow-rumped warblers at my bird feeders daily.
CONGRATS NATHAN ON THE ROAD RUNNER LIFER
That was awesome.😅
Really cool finds!
Congrats on the rufous-capped warbler! You ended up with some great footage of it! I like the thick-billed kingbirds, too!
9:17 🚨Not a zone-tailed!🚨 Looks pretty perfect for Gray Hawk. Pretty compact build with broad wings and bold tail band.
Great catch, buddy! It looked super dark in the field, but I was able to find a lighter picture of what appears to be the same individual and I think you're right. That'll be a relief to Nathaniel because he missed that bird and if it was Zone-tailed it would have been a lifer for him 🤣 Here's the bird: ebird.org/checklist/S147279552
@@BadgerlandBirding Haha I've seen many Gray Hawks, but a zonie would be a lifer for me too 👀
@@pauraque we got ours in the Grand Canyon. Maybe you can get your lifer Whooper Swan and Zone-tailed in the same day 😂
@@BadgerlandBirding Probably impossible but im up for the challenge 😤
I was there in 2016, great birding.
The Rufous-capped Warbler was awesome!
Thanks, man!
Im going to New York in may so I can’t wait to get tons of new lifers in Central Park, almost every bird will be a lifer since I am from Europe
Very cool! I've been to the Paton Center for Hummingbirds & the Sonoita Creek preserve last spring but hope to return in mid April for a "deeper dive" into the area. I saw a ton of "lifers" on my last visit, so I'm stoked to check out Patagonia Lake! 🐦
Fantastic video, guys, as ever. A great area, and what a bird. Hope to get there on our next trip across pond. Thanks. 🇬🇧 A really super
channel.
Are you planning on any more Arizona trips for the Channel?
I have a bunch more Arizona vids to make from this trip!
Fantastic, can't wait. And thanks again. Simply the best RUclips birding channel by miles.🙌🙌
I found it funny that you birded Kenny Bostick’s first stop in the Big Year movie.
Every time I bird in a place or see a species mentioned in “The Big Year” it feels special
@@BadgerlandBirding Same here.
Too bad Derek couldn’t find a Nuttings Flycatcher though -Ryan
I need to get back out there. It’s been too long
I’m supposed to be headed out there next weekend but I’m wondering about the cel reception there. Thanks for sharing. 🤙🏽🌺
It’s hard to recall, but I think we had fine cell reception there. It’s not in the middle of nowhere, the trails just feel like you are. I would just keep checking and if you start to lose it you could go back to an area where it’s stronger
Thanks. Hopefully we get to see as much animals as u did minus the skunk.
We have been on that path twice prior to our latest trek in late April 2023 when we had a very scary encounter with a charging big black bull. We almost got trampled by the other bulls and cows fleeing from the running, snorting crazy bull. As he charged us I threw up my hand and shouted "No!". To my surprise he stopped. Do to the adrenaline surge I can't remember exactly what happened for several minutes after that. It is a great place to bird but the free roaming cattle, at least the big black one, can be hazardous.
I was in that exact spot last July looking for it. Unfortunately it never showed for me. Congratulations on getting it.
It definitely seemed like a tricky one to find. I believe there was one at Florida Canyon in AZ a few months after that would pop out within feet of people and seemed much easier to find
Man, I need to get back to SEAZ! Congrats on a great bird.
Wow cool! You guys ever seen some of the accidental Mexican nightjars that occur along the Mexican border like the Tawny and Buff collared nightjars? I think nightjars are cool.
Not yet, but they are definitely very cool birds and species we’d love to see! The Paraques on south texas were quite cool
Be aware that many (if not all) of the Mexican Ducks in the US are hybrids. The bottom most one though looks pretty in range for 'pure' mexican so you're good to add at least one to your list.
Yeah, the possibility of hybrids always makes it less satisfying even when you get one that seems “pure”
What month did you visit?
There’s a timestamp at the start of the video. It was in August!
