There are many disturbing elements to Dragon Age. That's why it was rated Mature, even in 2009. as a metis canadian, this really speaks to a lot of truths in people who lived in a land LONG before others came to colonize shit. the elves have lost so much of themselves and are treated as a lower class/people. theyre used and abused by humans, so much history forgotten and lost. its similar to the cultural genocide of the native people of many countries (specifically in my knowledge of canadian indg. people) where yeah, they might be alive, but they lost so much of themselves. i dont think it went too far - if anything it was softer compared to real life comparisons. i like that it put that kind of story, that little truth, out into the world. this story is valuable, and helps put others into the shoes of native people. this is their reality, to this day. sexual assault is so common and so painful. they slotted it into a fantasy setting and its so fucking real.
I often liked the origin as a warrior elf you start out hated then become the worlds hero and maybe a elven hero for the kids in the future. The story was the perfect reluctant hero path. My elven male fell in love with Leliana however starting out he hated humans and even enjoyed killing the spoiled brat. At the beginning he would start out insulting the humans including the king then slowly warm up to everyone. He would take the blame for killing the boy without dragging Solis. He starting out even talked down to Vaughn and Duncan.
So this opening was actually something that I apriciate in a couple ways. After growing up in a town so small I only had two minority classmates it was a very real shock to see how minorities are treated when it's not an everyone you know will find out situation.
I don’t know. If they had actually shown anything rather than just imply things I would understand why this origin could use a heads-up warning. I think Hespith‘s fate is actually much worse in regards to that. It’s an M-rated game in a medieval setting; certain themes are to be expected.
This origin hits too close to home for me, I went through years of sa as a child and adult, playing city elf was bit hard in the beginning, but i liked the story. I think BioWare did great job at showing people how life can be “unfair” and how people in power can and most likely will abuse that power and how helpless lower class is. Mage and city elf my favorite origins, both show how corrupted whole system is and how helpless and hopeless regular people.
I gave some streamers who were first time players of Origins a content warning about the City Elf origin. This is hard to stomach but I applaud the creators of this game for managing to pull this off. I'm actually more surprised there wasn't something similar in the Mage origin with Templars abusing Mages, perhaps even with Casteless in Orzammar. I personally prefer fictional worlds where real problems are tackled because it spreads awareness. BioWare has done that on several occasions and this origin story is a prime example - another good one would be Krem. Unfortunately racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination or segregation make fiction more realistic. Edit: I should clarify that I'm also a member of a discriminated minority and for example because of this I don't have access to bank accounts or health insurance, and I have to file a lawsuit every time I apply for social welfare and I have also experienced sexual and other forms of abuse including getting abducted out of my apartment by the equivalent of the sheriff's office in 2020. So I am definitely biased from that angle.
That's my main quibble with this Origin: a little head's up probably was in order. But yeah, it hits hard, and I often wonder if it's prevented any IRL altercations by increasing awareness and empathy to the situation.
i agree about a content warning being important. while i love what this origin does and think this is a valuable story to tell, i think a basic kindness would be to warn people who might feel particularly vulnerable about this subject matter. also-amazing point about templars. it’s funny because da:o is usually pretty good about not falling into useless centrism like da:2 and da:i do sometimes, but da:2 was way better about admitting templars do awful awful things. da:o treats cullen’s crush as a cute thing but i imagine from the f!solana/amell perspective it could be horrifying

I agree that it's upsetting as an Origin, but I also think it's well written and necessary to an extent. It isn't just about poverty, racism and exploitation, but that you're seen as less than an animal. Dogs are quite literally valued and respected above elves in Ferelden. That's the level of objectification elves are subjected to. The law may say differently, but in a practical sense you have no rights, not even to your own body. The humans you run into in the rest of the game, whether they're prejudiced against you or not, have a very different view of life in the alienage. Without the origin, the player wouldn't know how skewered that is. Leliana has a whole discussion with you about how valued elf servants are in Orlais because they're attractive. And she thinks that's a positive thing.
