What - a lot men it floats a lot of their boats too. A good song and singer is not restricted just to one gender. I love the reaction of the younger generation especially the black population, the rappers in particular, pure shock that 2 white guys can sing soul as good if not better than some of their good soul singers and they admit it. The Righteous Bros were a duo not brothers and on every album they sung one song solo. The other "brother" was a bass/baritone and together they were sublime. 🇦🇺🇦🇺😷😷 .
"Time... goes by... so slowly... and Time can do... so much!" You all are too young. In a few decades, you will feel these lyrics more than you will want to.
Does not have to have a sad ending.!!.remember the theme of the song: "Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree" (its been three long years - do you still want me)? I always thought of Unchained Melody as the triumph of a holy love - leading to a euphoric, grateful reunion! (A man welcomed home after time away in jail... In the armed forces...after a long separation through studies abroad or....separated.through political difficulties...
Bless you two. You’re so young and completely inexperienced you have no clue what you’re listening to. Live. No auto tune. Just talent. You two have never experienced that. Sad.
When your entire world is TikTok or FaceBook or InstaGram, when your entire human interaction is through your phone screen, your reactions to something real are likely to resemble new mud. They seem to be waiting for someone to tell them what to think.
More than that, it's a song about yearning for and missing your love. I'm personally glad that a 13 year old girl doesn't quite get it. The song was written for a 1940s prison movie called "Unchained". The song was sung by a guy missing his love and considering escaping to reunite with her. The Righteous brothers were 2 singers, Bobby Hatfield (the angelic voiced tenor on this song), and Bill Medley (a bass/baritone). On every album each one had one solo. Bill Medly is still performing. Bobby Hatfield died on tour in 2005.
This was before Electronics could adjust your voice to sound how they need you to. This was REAL RAW Talent, I remember when this version came out my sisters would just keep repeat playing it for hours. But it never gets old, Thanks for the memory's.
"Whoa my love, my darling I've hungered for your touch" you don't know what that means.. Don't worry you will and then you will remember this song. I'm 66 years old so I was 11 yrs old when this song was released. Even at that age I knew what it meant. The voice that Bobby Hatfield, the singer had was undeniably one of the best. You are right you had to be able to sing then unlike today. What a talent. Bill Medley, the other brother was equally talented but when Bobby sang this song everyone melted into the arms of the person they loved. Still happens today whenever its played. That's what makes it a CLASSIC.
There was another review by British Guitarist. His analysis lasted almost 20 minutes. One of the things he talked about was Bobby Hatfield's range. He counted 33 different notes that were sung. That is almost 3 octaves, counting the sharps and flats. That is an amazing range. I hate to say it this reaction was not very good. Perhaps they are too young to understand and appreciate the quality of the song. This song was a hit when they first covered it and became a hit about 20 years later because of Ghost

Everything was different back then. I was at school in the sixties and there was still a whole lot of innocence that made young people really appreciate these kind of songs. The world has turned so base and sordid since those times , and most of the music reflects that .
Seriously that's your reaction I'm an old man I seen them they first started and to hear him do this version still touches my heart one of the greatest love songs ever written baby girl if you didn't get that you never will
I was 11 years old when this song came out. I loved it from the first time I heard it. It was particularly meaningful to this generation because the Vietnam War was heating up. As you can imagine there were many painful separations, this song expressed the loneliness & longing of many of those couples. It was also a slow dance standard. No other love song has ever come close to Bobby Hatfield’s rendition here, except their other hit, You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling. Bill Medley does a beautiful job as lead singer in that one.
The young lady did show some subtle signs of being impressed, but give her a break she is only 13 and a lot of young kids don't like to show too much emotion when they know their reaction is going to be seen by many people including their schoolmates and also her big bro is sitting beside her. Big bro seemed to enjoy this performance and was also subtle but was moving to the music. You can find plenty of reaction videos of girls crying and guys raving over this performance. hehe
That’s the emotive power of the legendary BOBBY HATFIELD (RIP 1940 - 2003) - arguably the greatest tenor singer EVER - his pronouncing and clarity is perfect. This was his 1965 masterpiece 👌
OMG his vocal control is absolutely amazing, I mean just this here at 2:45 the belt then taking it down and getting softer, all in one breath. He's one of those singers I just like to close my eyes and hone all my attention in on all the things his voice is doing all at once.
I'm a few months late, but I gotta tell you that this song is the beautiful love song ever written, sang by the most perfect voice ever recorded, Bobby Hatfield of The Righteous Brothers. I call this "Bobby's Song" because although there have been many recordings by different artists, but none as beautifully done. Live, no autotune just pure talent. Bobby, a mic, this song, and a whole nation of women fell in love. I was one of them, 22 years old. One day, young lady, when you are older, like 21, listen to it again. You WILL understand. We miss him so much but he left a legacy of beautiful music and his unmatchable voice
Song is about missing his girl not being able to “touch” her. “Time goes by so slowly” when back in the day there were no mobile devices internet facetime Facebook. If someone was traveling and left you, you honestly worried about them because ppl would have to make long distance calls or write letters to communicate. Now we can talk to them while they’re on the plane. Time apart back then can and did a LOT to relationships. Imagine a non superficial life without mobile and internet, no one can anymore so they can’t understand a song like this.
@@bunnymunro3446 I In an age when people communicate across the table by cell phones, you nailed it! Today, "time goes by so slowly" means you have to wait 30 milliseconds for a response, instead of instantaneously receiving it in 5 !
They each did a solo as part of their act. That was Bobby Hatfield age 25. The song was written for a 1955 movie Unchained. It was about a guy in prison separated from his wife. Over 600 covers of this great song. Bobby's live version is the gold standard. A studio version was used in the movie Ghost.
This is a love song from a young man separated from his wife or girlfriend and wondering if she is waiting for him and telling her how much he loves her, needs, and has that little doubt if she is still his, “ are you still mine “ and how much he still needs her. This is mine and my husbands song as he was separated from me for a whole year when the Air Force stationed sent him to S. Korea during the Pueblo Crisis. You need to google that. N. Korea attacked our ship the Pueblo and took the crew hostage. Said the ship has crossed into N. Korean waters, but it actually was within the international water boundary. Anyway, this is our song and when my husband came back to me from the long lonely river of the the sea, I had waited for him, given birth to our first child. We were in our early 20’s, I was 22, he 23 and we danced the night away and got reacquainted to that beautiful song. We can still dance to it and do. My husband and I consider that we were born and grew up in one for the best times ever. Life was real back then. Life is all fake now. Altered voices, pictures, and made up lives on social media always staring down at the smart phones! No one knows what is real or not real anymore ! ☹️
Obviously today's love songs are more understood by the youth if the lyrics are something like Bak Dat Azz Up or maybe U My Bitch Thang, Now that makes young girls today feel loved and respected by smooth talking gentlemen 😉

This video is a single cut from the extremely popular Andy William's Show. Sung was the title song to a totally awful prison movie called "Unchained". The producers never gave the song a name, so it was just referred to as the "Unchained melody." Cut out from the video, is the intro by Andy Williams after the duo (Bill Medley, baritone, and Bobby Hatfield, tenor) who had just finished singing together. (They had briefly explained how they got their name and why Bobby would be singing a solo, which came as a complete surprise to Mr. Williams.) Though reportedly covered by over 300 artists over the last 60 years, Bobby's version is still widely considered "his" to own. It's popularity was rekindled with the release of the movie, "Ghost." Of note with this song is that Bobby sings over 20 separate and distinct notes covering three octaves, all in perfect pitch, tone and timbre. The greatest professionals and singing experts have stated that no one else have ever sang such a song with such reserved strength and emotion, yet with seemingly lack of effort that no one has yet to match in their cover attempts.
I wondered why Andy shook Bobby's hand when he came back, and only recently found out that he'd also recorded Unchained Melody, along with almost every other singer from Elvis to Susan Boyle! It'll always be Bobby's song though, no one has even come close in all these years.
This song was written 10 years before Bobby Hatfield sang it here. It was written for a prison movie called "Unchained", about a man in prison who is separated from his beloved. "Time goes by so slowly" --- yeah, it would for those in prison. "Wait for me, wait for me" --- he is yearning for her, asking her to be faithful. "Will you still be mine?" --- when he finally gets out of prison, will she still be his, will she have waited for him, will her love have survived the long separation? This is what he is thinking about and wondering all the time he is in prison. This song is so romantic and enduring and timeless because 1) the melody itself is beautiful, 2) the lyrics touch the deepest places in the human heart, 3) Bobby Hatfield had an incredible voice.
By the way the 13 year old girl kept glancing over at her big brother you could tell she was trying to keep the emotions that were building up inside of her away from him!
It’s the theme song to a film/tv show called “Unchained” and it’s sung from the perspective of a prisoner who’s missing his lover. Forget the obvious “it’s a love song” because it’s actually a “I’m missing you so badly that I’m hurting” song.
It’s a generational/age thing. A 13 year can’t relate to the lyrics because she probably didn’t have her “first” love. As she matures and has more life experiences, she’ll have that “I-Get-It” moment and understand the meaning of the song.
This is the worst review of a classic 60's song I have ever heard , you two need to google this duo group named the Righteous Bros, they are not brothers, they are an act. Review the song "You're Lost That loving Feeling"& "Soul & Inspiration"
Reaction or reacting to, requires the depth of being able to think. These young people don't have that ability, apparently, but it's not their fault. The ability to think for oneself has been eroded away from our society to the point that simple math cannot be done without talking into ones phone which is permanently placed in ones hand. How sad for this generation. How may we take back our humanity?
You gotta understand. It's the woke, third-fourth wave feminist Me-Too Tide Pod generation. They're more concerned about personal pronouns, and can't even figure out what gender they are (!). Things that are immediately obvious and deeply meaningful to us don't resonate with them at all, and they never will. Don't waste your time on them. 😑
Just so that YOU understand, most 13 year old girls in 1965 wanted either John or Paul and thought the Righteous Brothers were "square." Stop doing the age-old practice of blaming the young for being inexperienced, fool! She's 13 years old! 13!!!
I understand I'm a huge fan of theirs, this is a gorgeous song, magnificent singer but she comes from a new generation mainly rap and hip-hop I wasn't fond listening to my dad's polka music or some other artists my parents listened to
This song was written as the theme song for a movie called Unchained about a prisoner who is about to be released. He is singing to his girlfriend who he hopes is waiting for him. The movie had only limited success, but the song garnered some attention. It has been covered by literally dozens of artists over the years including Elvis. Bobby Hatfield’s studio recording was a massive hit and has been featured in a number of movies, the most notable being Ghost with Patrick Swayzie. This live performance was on the Andy Williams Show, a variety show very popular in the sixties. Hatfield’s perfect rendition is widely considered one of the greatest single live performances in popular music history, and is considered by most music experts to be the definitive version of the song. One of the those instances when a live performance is better than the studio performance. This performance is different from the studio version especially the high notes at the end. He covers a range of 20 notes and over an octave during the song, a remarkable feat for a male singer. And he does it effortlessly and with no electronic aids other than a microphone. Bobby Hatfield is one half of the Righteous Brothers, a duo act. They are not actually brothers. The other singer is Bill Medly whose voice is completely different. And he can go as low as Bobby can go high. Their voices blend perfectly. They are among the best duo’s ever. They were known as blue eyed soul, because when they first started, they were often mistaken for a black group. Until they were seen. You should check out. their YOU’VE LOST THAT LOVING FEELING. This song was also a massive hit, in fact, it was the most played song on TV and radio of the 20th century.
The character in Unchained was debating whether he should escape, to get home to his wife & family, or stay & serve his sentence (he starts climbing the fence, changes his mind & goes back). Also, Unchained Melody is 1 of the most covered songs of the 20th century, recorded over 1500 times, in multiple languages. The original is the movie version, sung by Robert "Todd" Duncan, a famous baritone opera singer & actor (he had a bit part in the movie). In 1945, he became the 1st African American to sing with a major opera company & the 1st to sing with an otherwise white cast.
I think many young people are so used to digitized, synthetic, autotuned music and voices that they have a hard time really understanding and appreciating a performance of this caliber when they hear it.
There was a an interview just before the live performance on The Andy Williams Show. The other " brother" explained that sometimes one or the other would take the solo lead. For both singing listen to, "You've Lost That Loving Feeling".
There should have been a camera on me reacting to these two not reacting. I'm sitting here going NOTICE SOMETHING. Try catching how subtle and nuanced this is. Notice how the man seems to almost never breathe. Register that he hit the E over high C which is hard for most women much less a man. There was so much soul, so much heart and so much feeling and you didn't even register the words much less how this man did this live onstage all in a single take with no room for a single error. I suggest you look at how others reacted to this.
I was 16-teen when this song came out. The best live performance I can recall, in music history. No auto tune mic, no rerun, no nothing. Just enormous talent by Bobby Hatfield, the tenor of the "brothers". The other "brother" Bill Medley. Check out Wings of Pegasus.
IMO, this is the most beautiful song ever written. It still brings chills to me all these years later. There are just tons of wonderful covers of this song too.
Omg these young kids don't get into the song.this is one of the greatest songs ever. They don't even get into rythem of the music. This was a waste of my time.😒😒
This is blue eyed soul they picked that name when they were in a quartet The Parmores they were performing in a club in the south just Bobby and Bill sang a song and after a black marine stood and shouted " That's righteous brothers". That's who they became (not actually brothers).
He and Bill Medley were a duo but he sang this solo…his mom was in the audience for the first time. A lot of us listened to this song when our boyfriends were in Viet Nam fighting. He’s telling his wife or girlfriend that he is missing and loving her and to please wait for him to return. Many soldiers received a Dear John letter while they were in Nam fighting in a war.
Song was 10 years old then, came from a 1955 movie about guys considering escaping prison. Bad movie, good song. Was a song every vocal group had in their repertoire. Bobby's version was taken up by Vietnam war soldiers and their sweethearts waiting here back home for them.
She didn't understand the words but she felt the emotion. Her hand over mouth was a: "OMG what is this I feel?" She was little girl not wanting her big brother to intrude in a special moment.
Perfection!! I’m crying remembering this song. I was in high school when this song came out, good memories from a different time! Thank you for playing this!!❤️
Oh wow. PLEASE tell me she's joking with the "I don't know what the lyrics mean." You don't even have to understand English to know what the lyrics mean.
This song is about being separated for a long period of time (for whatever reason) from someone you love. They are wondering whether their love has moved on, "Are you still mine?" hoping they will be reunited when he returns. "I'll be coming home, wait for me." Unchained Melody is one of the most poignant and beautiful love songs ever.
I kind of feel bad for you guys. I can see a disconnect from the multiple generational gap here. You both looked mildly frigidity from being used to have a song torgue out your mind instead relating to the simplicity and greatness of this song.
I sang this to my wife at our wedding in 1983. She, however she said I murdered it. I'm guessing it's not a song for a baritone, she told me I was of better sticking to my drumming. I thought it was an appropriate song as I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, I had returned from the war for the Falkland Islands when I proposed, and now was shipping out to Sierra Leone two days later, so much for my attempt at being romantic. On the upside she liked me in my Dress Uniform, and having my comrades forming the sword tunnel helped. I must have done something write because we're still together. With 4 children and 7 grandchildren, we got busy on baby's when I was home. I served my Queen and Country for 34 years as a Royal Marine Commandos and Specialist Forces, and then 2 years in hospital, and she stuck by me even though I'm wheelchair bound now. We do actually have a song by Queen called "Your Me Best Friend", a very apt song as she has been my best friend since we were both 16.
With regards to your question on history, the song was from a really cheesy early 1950s prison escape movie titled Unchained. Which is where you get the name Unchained Melody. And the guy singing is lamenting whether or not his love will still be there waiting for him when he gets out. So he's declaring his love and pleading for her to wait.
While Bill had a great turn on "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," His solo's on "Georgia On My Mind," "I Can't Make It Alone," and "Brown Eyed Woman" will give a better idea of his talent.
How did I do with that high note in the beginning?? DON'T FORGET TO SUBSCRIBEEEEE AND DROP A LIKE!! 😂
It wasn't THAT high, most guys can hit a high note like that. Also, it's easier for men to hit high notes than it is for women, believe it or not

I'd never heard this live version until now, but I know the recorded version, which Bill Medley produced, by heart. Bobby does some even more amazing stuff on the live version than he did on the record, which was already plenty impressive. Jaw dropping.
I heard the remastered studio version, one take it's somewhat different but phenomenal as this performance

And love lost along the way will will tinge them with pain
Does not have to have a sad ending.!!.remember the theme of the song: "Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree" (its been three long years - do you still want me)?

This was REAL RAW Talent, I remember when this version came out my sisters would just

I think he was 25 in this video from the Andy Williams Show, although he was 24 when they did the studio recording.
Not bad for a 25-year-old kid, eh?? He turned 25 on August 10th '65. The show was in October '65.
They had to use a phone to determine how long ago 1965 was...let that sink in. We're screwed.
I was 11 also. Loved it then and still do.
Guess you two are not used to solid and great music without any gimmicks Just pure raw talent.
You see the thing is, in a "reaction" video, there needs to be some reaction. You guys had ZERO reaction.
Thats because they DON'T get it.
You can find plenty of reaction videos of girls crying and guys raving over this performance. hehe

I can't believe how neither of them had a clue. What a beautiful romantic song and there was NO reaction. What a stunning voice.
God bless you. I was 18 when the song hit in 1965.
Bobby Hatfield just stood there and sung it - LIVE !! Faultlessly and effortlessly. Probably one of the best single-take recordings ever.
Spot on
@@bunnymunro3446 I In an age when people communicate across the table by cell phones, you nailed it! Today, "time goes by so slowly" means you have to wait 30 milliseconds for a response, instead of instantaneously receiving it in 5 !

Yessssssss!
When this song came out in 1965 I was just graduating from high school. 50s and 60s were really great times for the most part.
Obviously today's love songs are more understood by the youth if the lyrics are something like Bak Dat Azz Up or maybe U My Bitch Thang, Now that makes young girls today feel loved and respected by smooth talking gentlemen 😉

That voice, face, blue eyes! Bobby Hatfield was perfection. Then and now.
This video is a single cut from the extremely popular Andy William's Show. Sung was the title song to a totally awful prison movie called "Unchained". The producers never gave the song a name, so it was just referred to as the "Unchained melody."
Cut out from the video, is the intro by Andy Williams after the duo (Bill Medley, baritone, and Bobby Hatfield, tenor) who
had just finished singing together. (They had briefly explained how they got their name and why Bobby would be singing a solo, which came as a complete surprise to Mr. Williams.)
Though reportedly covered by over 300 artists over the last 60 years, Bobby's version is still widely considered "his" to own.
It's popularity was rekindled with the release of the movie, "Ghost."
Of note with this song is that Bobby sings over 20 separate and distinct notes covering three octaves, all in perfect pitch, tone and timbre.
Amen
Man, you guys need to relax! Feel that music. This was as exciting as drinking flat soda...

It’s the theme song to a film/tv show called “Unchained” and it’s sung from the perspective of a prisoner who’s missing his lover.
Forget the obvious “it’s a love song” because it’s actually a “I’m missing you so badly that I’m hurting” song.
It has been covered lots of times, but none has a voice like his. When he sings with his "brother" the melody is brilliant.

It’s a generational/age thing. A 13 year can’t relate to the lyrics because she probably didn’t have her “first” love. As she matures and has more life experiences, she’ll have that “I-Get-It” moment and understand the meaning of the song.

This is a masterpiece..Your reaction.........well
Reaction or reacting to, requires the depth of being able to think. These young people don't have that ability, apparently, but it's not their fault. The ability to think for oneself has been eroded away from our society to the point that simple math cannot be done without talking into ones phone which is permanently placed in ones hand. How sad for this generation. How may we take back our humanity?
Wow Vanessa, well said!
AGREED
Their reaction--especially the girl--kinda destroyed my faith in today's young people. IT'S A GORGEOUS LOVE SONG! WHAT'S NOT TO UNDERSTAND?
You gotta understand. It's the woke, third-fourth wave feminist Me-Too Tide Pod generation. They're more concerned about personal pronouns, and can't even figure out what gender they are (!). Things that are immediately obvious and deeply meaningful to us don't resonate with them at all, and they never will. Don't waste your time on them. 😑
Just so that YOU understand, most 13 year old girls in 1965 wanted either John or Paul and thought the Righteous Brothers were "square." Stop doing the age-old practice of blaming the young for being inexperienced, fool! She's 13 years old!
13!!!
@geraldjensen If it’s not autotune produced, her generation isn’t interested. Lip syncing no talents.
Its a kid man. They haven't lived life yet and experienced/lost a love like that. Give em time to understand.
I understand I'm a huge fan of theirs, this is a gorgeous song, magnificent singer but she comes from a new generation mainly rap and hip-hop

It's wonderful to hear a song that's so superb it transcends generations!!! Music unites us ;-D

Most emotionless review of an emotional tune I’ve seen.
Two idiots.
To quote Foghorn Leghorn, “sharp as a bowling ball “

With regards to your question on history, the song was from a really cheesy early 1950s prison escape movie titled Unchained. Which is where you get the name Unchained Melody.
