  • This video shows the alphabet in American Sign Language (ASL). Notice the "American" in the video title because sign language is not universal as some people think. There are actually over 300 sign languages in the world and their alphabets are different from American Sign Language (ASL). ASL is the sign language used here in the United States.
Hi!! :) Finally, I have a video showing the alphabet!! This is one of the most requested videos!! Hope this helps!! :)
Also, if you're interested, I have a mini self-paced course practicing the alphabet, focusing only on the alphabet letters, practicing both fingerspelling and fingerspelling receptivity at a variety of speeds… this course was created for those who haven’t learned the alphabet yet or have recently and also for those who struggle to read fingerspelling at the slowest speed. The course is only $15... the course is about an hour and a half long- you can do 15 minutes a day everyday and finish the course in about a week. :) Here's the link to sign up for the course: signedwithhear...

Comes in handy when a deaf or hearing impaired person needs help and you know at least how to spell. Ages ago, when I was in elementary, I learned to sign the alphabet and very few other words. I was out with my family at a Long John's Silver when a man approached us signing. I was able to help a bit with my signing, mostly we communicated writing, but I at least personally felt good being able to communicate, even if very little, in sign. I'm finally getting back to learning in case I run into more deaf/hearing impaired customers, or even people when I'm out and about.

TIP: after learning the alphabet look around for logos or any words either on a screen or on a wall or picture, and try to spell the word/words keep practicing :)

I started working with FedEx this year, and they have a truly surprising amount of deaf people working for them. Your videos are a big help in bridging that gap.
I really hate not being able to communicate with them properly. I really wish that our schools taught ASL. I really wish classes on ASL were offered in school.

When I leearnt American sign languauage, it was to work with deaf children in 1984. I have learnt french sign language (I was born there) and I worked 15 years in Israel, learnt hebrew and israeli sign language. I volunteered in Tel-Aviv in "the house of Helen Keller" for for 9 years. It was great. I was a special education teacher from 1984-2010. I love the way you sign. Keep up the good work.

I like how you can sign the alphabet with just one hand. I was trying to learn LDA (lengua de señas Argentina) but there aren't many videos about it and I know a lot of English so I thought why not learn ASL too?
Anyways, tanks for this video, was really helpful 💜

When I was little I went to a catholic elementary school (mid 80’s) and we were taught sign language. Im so surprised I remember almost all of the alphabet in sign language. I used to know words and some phrases. I need to get back into the habit of using asl. Im hearing impaired and need to get my hearing aids fixed. But having this in my arsenal would help when I go out.

In Norwegian Sign Language most letters are actually the same except for F, G, H, P, Q, S, T, and X☺️ even though many young deaf people have started using at least the ASL letter F. We also have three more letters to our alphabet - Æ, Ø, Å.

Are there 2 different ways to sign "e" "m" and "s" in asl or do some people just have a hard time getting it exactly right? Some people grasp their fingers to sign "e" and others don't and I'm not sure who's right and who's wrong. Also are the index and middle finger/knuckle raised when signing "s" or is that a coincidence (some people just throw their thumb over all of their fingers other seem to raise their first to knuckles). And for m some people seem to bunch their first three fingers together some are more lax. Am I picking up on personal quirks or are there different ways to sign these letter in asl, could they possibly be confusing asl for other sign languages or are there more than one correct way to sign these letters?
