My wife and myself at 60+ years old laid a 130 foot long block paving drive because we didn’t want a builder to do our bit of a joint project. I am an engineer and fairly intelligent so looked on the internet for what to do ( thanks Brew Cabin!) and asked loads of questions. It turned out to be fairly simple overall and is still in great condition over ten years later. We even had seven people ask me do quote for their own drives, so just learn what you can, know your own limitations but go for it.

Our neighbour did a massive remodel that took from start to finish two years in stages. He is very much like you Andy , self employed so work was done at weekends and summer nights.
We were involved from start to finish and was a very pleasant experience. As you say we agreed stuff at the start with him.
we’ve been lucky over many years with neighbours and it was a concern to start with, but every milestone he met and reward to us was fulfilled.
    So lucky another fantastic neighbour.

Well played though mate - especially the hand-digging; I'm only 35 and aching after lifting/insulating the floor under my house. It's a lovely feeling though; knowing that the hidden parts of a build are done properly. Well done!

Great video... gone into a lot of detail and prep.. Old adage springs to mind, Fail to prepare - prepare to fail... Couple of points, respiratory PPE a must when doing any cutting of brick, concrete or fired clay materials. Silicosis is a killer. As for the sitting water in the drain, I'd have got a local jetter man out to clear it and camera it. Get a copy of the CCTV survey then in the event of any issues in years to come, you have the evidence - you did it right. Wise investment at an important time, never mind what the local water board said, especially after your alterations..

Oh this brings back some delightful memories of our own rear extension - except the sewer pipe was a little larger at 21" internal diameter. Along with the similar problem of an inspection chamber covered in grass that wasn't supposed to be there.
We had to get a patch installed because the water board were concerned about a hairline crack near the crown on a section we were going to build over (as it's classified as a critical sewer given the size). And yet further upstream under public land there is an area of significant tree route ingress (which is blocking the sewer by ~50%), which they claim is completely fine. I have no idea how they managed to say that with a straight face.

25 years ago, the drain pipes at my grandpa's house stank, it was very hard to bear in the kitchen and laundry room (especially in the summer). The water company has also examined the pipes and said it was all super in order. Since the old septic tank should be filled in a garden renovation (was used at times when the construction area was not yet connected to the sewer system), he renewed the pipes. Same result, the pipe sat 80% tight with stinky gloop, that stank beastly. My grandpa called the sewage association, let himself be connected to the responsible clerk and yelled at him for ten minutes (I was 8 and learned a lot of new swear words hehe) and filed a complaint 🤣The neighbors took care of the problem themselves. So unfortunately it's not better here in Germany.

Started my very tiny extension some years ago which had to go over a sewer. First time building control came round it was stop what your doing, this is a public sewer. It was shared with next door and I was obviously very naive in my knowledge and also my architect hadn’t warned me also. Anyway water board did the survey and granted me build over rights but it disrupted the build somewhat. My build over fee for water company about £500 15 years ago.

I know it is too late but a cheap pneumatic ball that is slightly larger than the pipe can be stuffed up the pipe before you cut it to prevent water from coming out of the pipe while you are working it and getting the new pipe into place. That way it can stay dry or as dry as possible Then when you are ready to make connections, the ball can be pulled out the new pipe lowered or rolled into place and the connection made.

I have an old pair of electricity boards rubber gloves for doing such things. There like a much thicker and bigger marrygold and up to the elbow. Think you can also get them on eBay. Excellent videos thanks.

This project is so fascinating to watch! But I don't mind being unable to smell it.

I always wondered if many plumbers took oggies for lunch.

Cutting in to old drain runs can always be awkward especially in tight trenches.
You did an awesome job there, very high quality finish! Shame it’s just going to be buried!
Although you didn’t seem to have much trouble, but I would recommend an internal pipe bung to temporarily stem the flow, good thing with those is that they can be removed after the joint has been done meaning all the backed up waste/ water can just flow into the chamber and not fill your trench
    Great work as usual! 👍

Curious what did the water board state on their paperwork for replacement of pipework? Id seen on another video it needed replacing like for like?
Also just out of interest could you have diverted that around the extension if you wanted the full width of the property as the kitchen extension? Looks like a straight run across multiple neighbors property’s so that would put a dog leg into the pipe, would that be aloud?
Our main sewer run goes directly under the house at a 45 degree so I’d have only assumed we could move the man hole in that direction which means I’d have to make my rear extension a meter shorter than I planned so it’s off the boundary to allow the manhole to be moved there

You seem lucky with your water board. When we moved an inspection chamber we had to use their recommended contractors and the inspection chamber had to be brick built.
