"You can blow out a candle but you can't blow out a fire. Once the flames begin to catch, the wind will blow it higher." Pure poetry with so much meaning....

Quite a few great videos and songs on RUclips from this collection of musicians coming together. Peter Gabriel is known for bringing musicians from all over the world on his Real World record label which exposed more artists from so many corners of the globe. This is one reason I have always considered him the most interesting member of the group Genesis and because of his activism for social change. I like his music too. Great song! This video is soooooo good! I believe. Gabriel donated the proceeds from both versions of the single to the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa. Gabriel sang the piece at Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert at Wembley Stadium in 1988. The concert featured a number of well-known artists, including Dire Straits, Miriam Makeba, Simple Minds, Eurythmics, and Tracy Chapman.

Thanks, John. You really gave us good info on this track. I’m so happy several of us respond to this moving tribute. I think the Playing For Change version was recently recorded but the song was originally released in 1980 and played for so many occasions, like you documented. I was impressed with the artists from so many countries and varied talents. I also requested another Playing For Change production, “Iko Iko” which is a “Nawlins”-based song that includes a Neville brother and Dr. John (RIP) and the Congo Nation in their incredible, hand-made feathered costumes. Thanks again. I always appreciate your input on this channel. 🥰

I learned about Stephen Biko through this song. Both you and I were brought to Biko's cause through music. That's the very essence of soul.

MM this is a very strong song request regarding its social relevance. This song request informed me to read about Stephen Biko and his activism and tragic death in South Africa. The playing for change which involved many music artist to promote social awareness is an extremely responsible use of their influential platforms. I would like to request Maroon 5's "Daylight", but it was released in 2012. Again MM, this is a strong song request and thank you for enlightening me......

Thank you! You enlighten me every day with your comments on this channel. I’m so glad you caught up on Biko’s activism and the artists who are Playing For Change. I remember that several artists boycotted playing South Africa (back in the day) as a statement against apartheid. Many think it’s important to use any platform as a vehicle for education and change.
I requested another track from Playing for Change, involving The Congo Nation in their amazing hand-made feathered and beaded costumes ... keeping alive a tradition of music from 1700 -1800’s that was really the birth of Jazz in Louisiana. The track, “Iko Iko,” also includes a Neville brother and Dr John (RIP) and many other artists world-wide.
Thanks again. 🥰 Here’s another one I enjoyed “Get Up, Stand Up” by Bob Marley’s children and many other artists:

Hey JJ, Steve Biko was a South African Journalist killed/murdered/executed during Apartheid.
There is movie inspired/based on his life: “Cry Freedom”. Denzel Washington portrays the late Steve Biko.

This song really started it. I don't think that Denzel Washington movie Cry Freedom from 1987 would have gotten made at all, if this song hadn't made people around the world aware of the story 6-7 years earlier.
