    So I’ve got a kind-of-joke character that everyone in-universe calls “The Nurse.”
    This person works in the medical field, but the general public is dead terrified of her mostly because 1) she’s a vampire, and 2) she has lived long enough to see all sorts of medical atrocities. While she “doesn’t drink” she tends to be cold and short-tempered with patients. She usually says something along the lines of “back in my day you would’ve gotten leeches-be appreciative this is only a tetanus shot.” She considers her last “real job” was a combat nurse during the American Civil War (there were a lot of amputations back then).

    the thing about people not knowing how to pronounce your ocs' names reminded me of that oc of mine whose name is a made up word that i have a specific pronunciation for in mind and which text to speech stuff (me and my friends play gartic phone with the text to speech on a lot and most of our prompts involve our ocs) keeps pronouncing wrong in different (wrong) ways and almost never correctly
    then there's the one with an obscure 9 letter long greek mythology name my friend straight up had to ask me how to pronounce during a voice call, and the one whose full name is 47 letters.
    oh and then there's that guy i created 3 whole years ago who still doesn't have a name. we don't talk about him. (litterally, considering we wouldn't know what to call him if we did)

    I have my own story with pronunciation:
    So my main OC is named Czerik, whose in-universe name comes from his native language which I partially constructed. When I made up the name, I pronounced it in my head like if you put the "ch" in chair in front of the name "Eric". Then I realized later that his name technically should be pronounced like if you put a "k" sound at the end of "cherry". This is because the in-universe language, like the languages it is based on, does not have a short "i" sound like in words like "sit", instead only pronouncing i like the "ee" in "reed".
    I still pronounce it the original way because it feels more natural.

    A funny thing about some of my characters is their current name-find-origins. Verity's from finding synonyms for Truth (as I associate them with the song Policy of Truth), Feeb's a holdover from being a translation of Queen Moon (her full name is Febus Regina DeLune), and Daphne's from a character name selector screen. I shit you not, naming is one of the FUNNEST parts of making an oc for me. It's either some symbolic easter egg, or just vibes. The two leads for one of my stories are Bobby and Isaac. Isaac is named that way because it means "one who laughs" and his arc is largely centered around trusting others to not try to wedge a proverbial knife into every show of vulnerability. And Bobby is named Bobby because he's friendly and talkative and in my brain that's a friendly and talkative name, lol.

    Usually, if I can find a way to link an OC's name to their character, I'll use it:

    - My OC *Trojan* is a human pretending to be a centaur, he's an amputee from both thighs and his prosthetics are built like a horse.

  • @throneisbed7833
    @throneisbed7833 6 месяцев назад +3

    My naming process has two methods. Either I'll go into an online deep-dive into meanings and cultural significance and commonality in the country of origin until at last I have something that perfectly fits the character and isn't overly uncommon in the culture in question but also isn't their equivalent of "bob", or I'll glance around my workspace for a moment until I spot something. This is how my character Maxwell was named. I looked around my room. And spotted a box labelled "Powermax Blender". My no-nonsense superhero hawk boy was named after a blender.
    Oh, and I almost forgot! Sometimes I create a culture and then I create a whole language before settling on a name for my characters just so it contextually makes sense. I could go on a whole tangent about the meanings and translations and cultural significance (for the character, that is) of my character named Cythe Cenesserie. But I will spare you all, leaving you instead with the note that no one else in the story can pronounce his name so they all just default to "Kite".
    Of course, my naming used to be so very generic. I'd have characters with interesting concepts and promise to them, and they would be named things like Carey and Irene and Morgan. But even those names had a touch of nerdery to them. Morgan's deadname is revealed to be Morgana, he just didn't care enough to change it more than removing a letter. And of course, Sans. Dear, beloved Sans. Interestingly enough, I named them before I knew undertale even existed. Sans was what I thought was a cool shortening of Insanity. But, welp, here we are now. I'm trying to re-work that story, actually (the original could not be used. It had issues beyond my cringy thirteen-year-old self's attempt at writing, and I hopefully have improved when it comes to sensitivity) but it's quite a process when every so often one starts thinking, "Why in the world did I name this character Shirleen?"

    • @Rosemadi.artist
      @Rosemadi.artist  6 месяцев назад +1

      That's such a mood! I'm also reworking a story I made when I was in middle school, and the question always pops up if you should change the name or not. I just trust my 14 year old self and kept the names like Kathy and Emmitt despite not really liking them anymore. The whole Sans thing omg, I'm still fortunate to have characters who don't share a name with some other famous game character. At least not yet!

    I’m writing a story (City Lights on Ao3, first chapter releases June 15th) and this was super helpful. Another thing I’d suggest is if you’re doing superhero names (it’s about superheroes) is to have the seriousness of the name tied to the seriousness of the character. For example; the main character of my story’s hero name (or as I’ve dubbed it; a supersona) is Valour. She’s a veteran superhero who takes it very seriously. While another character is a hero with a newt theme called Newtrillizer. He’s a bit more of a comic relief but is genuinely skilled.

    • @Rosemadi.artist
      @Rosemadi.artist  6 месяцев назад

      That's true that it's always good to have the seriousness tied together! Also Yay another writer, heck yeah!!!

      @@Rosemadi.artist in true writer fashion I’ve since shelved the project cuz I fell out of love with it. I do have another project I’ve been working on for a while now and I might try repurposing this story somewhere down the line as a spinoff series. Still helpful tho!
      Another tip is giving the character a similar name to who or what inspired them.

    When I have to name a character I just love to go crazy. I could stick to simpler names (which I do for less important or simpler characters), but I often am not satisfied. Here's some naming conventions I like so much:
    1- Plants. Being a person who loves farming, recently gardening and plants in general, I often pick up names from the ones I was told in my years of school/courses or I just make a list of them in my free time to expand the roster of plants at my disposal. For example, I am aware that names like Erika or Camille /camellia are pretty common, so one day I decided to go unconventional. I saw this bulbous plant I really liked during a lesson, it's called Camassia leichtlinii or something similar, so I picked up the name and gave it to one of my characters' mother, so they both have flower-related names. She's into ikebana (flower sorting art diffused in Japan, I might expand on it or not) and her daughter is a graffiti artist because I love hip hop culture.
    There's also this woman with kitsune like powers, but I thought staying there would've been too boring, so I mixed it up with the red panda to create some sort of hybrid spirit animal for her to use at will. I searched for a plant with the name of "fox's tail" (I did it in my language so you might not find anything in English) and I found a plant genus called Acalypha. From there I changed the c to a K because it's my favorite letter in the alphabet and boom, it became one of my favorite names ever.
    Also, pokemon helped with constantly naming their characters over plants across the generations.
    2- associating / word puns /references. I too have a female character called Skylar, I thought the name was really cool (I'm confident with keeping the A instead of the E) and this was reinforced by listening to the song "last one standing" by eminem and Skylar Grey, that was for a venom movie I guess, I don't know the fictional world, didn't watch it. Since this character of mine has an amazing voice, i couldn't let it go.
    As for her nickname (all my characters who have powers have a nickname associated with that different identity) is Miss Sileride, a wordplay that references her really big weapon she holds effortlessly and is able to ride if needed.
    Or this crucial Japanese-inspired character called Natsu Kashimori out of natsukashii, a word to describe a sensation of dejavu without having actually experienced it in the first place. Related to his powers of building memories and forging them into people.
    Another naming convention (but that's mostly for nicknames I suppose) could be the crasis, which is fusing two words together, still keeping the sound of it kind of consistent (some of my villains like Grimstortion or Supecter, or this non villainous character who fuses with her cat, with Felann as a nickname, making a crasis with part of her surname)
    Yeah sorry I have the bad habit to write whole essays about random things

    • @Rosemadi.artist
      @Rosemadi.artist  6 месяцев назад

      Ok thats good that you also agree that Skylar is better than Skyler haha anyways that's true that's good to have your OCs names associate in a way with their interests or even being inspired by someone!

    I usually keep these in mind when naming my characters:
    - Are they or a culture they are a part of either relevant to the story or inspired by another culture? (Sometimes I try to stick to a few cultures for names if that's the case)
    - Any notable or relevant personality, special abilities or strong emotional connection to some object or concept? (If I write fantasy, I usually have elemental magic and will find names that mean elemental stuff. )
    - Does their story match the story of someone in mythology or fairy tales? (The Prince in the story I'm working on now has parents named after a Greek huntress and an African trickster god because their qualities reminded me of those figures in mythology. I even decided to write a story about how they marry mostly based on the Queen's namesake with the flourishes taken from the myths that the King's namesake is famous for, so sometimes this name scheme is a good source of inspiration too).
    - How does the possible names make me feel? (I usually like cute, cozy, ethereal, or unusual-sounding names for main characters and supporting cast, depending on the personality. Side characters usually get more common and friendlier sounding names while antagonists usually get complicated sounding or sassier names)
    - How familiar do I want the name to be? (I will sometimes combine names I like to make more unique names or deliberately limit my name options to make the name sound more ordinary than the choice might have actually been)
    - Can I make the name an inside joke? (One of the characters I made when I was a tween was named after earl gray tea because the color of his shirt was the same as my favorite brand of earl gray tea... it was a little more funny until I saw Mary and Max, but it stuck for years.)

    i have a Dutch jester punk character by name of Estri van der Zotte. Estri comes from Jester, obviously, but "van der zotte" comes from the Dutch expression "Ben je helemaal van de zotte?" which means something like "Have you gone completely mad?"
    Her middle name is De Linn-Quent. She loves playing the villain and parts of her act involve escape tricks. Helps in getting out of prison.
    These are all very descriptive names that already have meanings to them.
    On the other side of things, i have a monstrous older man character by name of Fulkrost, resembling somewhere between an Orc and a Mesopotamian king statue. Plus teeth on his eyebrows.
    His name is not really based on anything, does not mean anything. Because I have a philosophy that creating a new, random word, will allow for a beholder of a story to formulate their own meanings to their name, as they witness their story unfold. And that too has great strength.
    Funnily enough, apparently there is an obscure kind of vampiric creature from Jewish mythology known as the Estri. Fortunate and fun overlap.

      - The Bungisngis (a jolly big-tusked cycloptic creature) from i believe Indonesia,
      - The cycloptic monstrous headless sloth-like Mapinguari of Brazilian myth,
      - The Cuegle and Ojancanu of Cantabrian folklore: A short, black-haired but incredibly strong monster with three differently-colored eyes, three arms with no hands, and a single horn, and very haired giants with twenty fingers and toes, respectively

    One thing I do when naming an OC, is I try to think of their backstory or something associated with that OC, and look up names associated with that element or symbol, or just give them a name based on that name. For example, I'm making a Knight character who loves birds. I decided to name her Gayle (Think Nightingale) because it sounds like a combo of Knight and Gale. I just went with her name spelled like that because I wanted something unique but not something that has a crazy or stupid spelling to it. I'm never going to name a character "Kristel" and say her name sounds like "Crystal".

    I love to make my names extensions of the character or story, something the character would do themselves, or just as a silly easter egg :D
    Reference/easter egg:
    I have a military demon slaying guy named Adrian. He's named after Adrian Shephard from Half-Life because military, young man, and godlike inhuman beings outside of our understanding!
    Extension of character:
    Alan, the villain of a separate* story. "Alan" means handsome (or cheerful, or precious) which is a reference to the character's inhuman levels of beauty and his own narcissism.
    Character self naming:
    Meddie is a robot obsessed with being human, so much to the point where she begins to have delusions that she is one. Medikit, a pun of medic + kit (baby bunny) and sounding like a slogan (medic it!) is actually just a company mascot. She doesn't like how character-y this name is and goes for "Meddie". Works both as a nickname and actual name.
    (I can expand upon that asterisk if anyone is curious)
