Hey guys! Obviously no hate to the anime community, its fans, or its artists. Just needed to vent a bit about how some people call our art anime when it's not :))
Much love! And again, draw whatever you want, I'm not the anime art police, and I'm not the anime hate mob. Just a stylized artist with other stylized artists who needed to vent 💕

      I usually say: “it’s uh…one of my characters.. “
Because if I said OC they’d be like: “what’s that mean?” Then I have to go through a whole teaching on what that means then it’d switch to: “hey what’s your character’s story and stuff?” And me, the one who doesn’t like sharing my ocs to non-art friends, would be trying to find a way to get out of it by saying “I don’t have the whole story yet so-“

This is the dark timeline where people are so used to ugly adult Swim cartoons being socially okay (because "mature" shows are okay for adults to watch and so valid) that they have twisted themselves into thinking that non-japanese cartoobs are realistic/gross looking and any sort of stylization, even something mild like yours, is anime because its actually visually appealing. The typical modern person has completely forgot the history of animation, even modern history, and somehow has never seen an actual cartoon in their life. Or maybe they only consider anime valid cause it has sexual harrassment, aka adult show, aka okay for smart adults to watch without being treated like children, aka infantilized. This is tragic.

The basic definition of anime is animation made by Japanese artists. However due to other artists having similar artstyles to anime even though they aren't from the Japanese country, lines are a bit blurred. It is like the basic definition of manga. Being Japanese comics with dialogue and pictures and panels. We don't call Korean comics from webtoon manga, we call it manhwa which is korean comics similar to manga with a more semi realism feel. So just say anime is Japanese animation.

I'm used to complaining about how a lot of cartoons seem to be afraid to give their characters irises, even though that is one of the most expressive things to me and can say a lot about a character (favourite examples being MLP g4 and Camp Camp). The Owl House and the Vivziepop works kinda do this, but it feels like it couldve been even BETTER with both of those.
Ive had my art style be called anime-inspired because my characters have eyes with highlights, but the way i draw them is very much not anime-esque. If anything you could say i was inspired by Vivzie but only for the eyelashes, but i was on that shit since before i even knew about her. I also never liked anime growing up so it didnt influence my art style.
Also it was so ironic to me when men had that Cal-Arts style craze and kept being like "watch anime instead!" Because all anime has looked basically the same to me while i can easily pick apart the differences between warly 2010s toons. Guess its the autistic visual processing in me. But if seeing the differences between Gumball and Steven Universe isnt normal, then can i even be a critic? Am i just insane?

If the Calarts style has a million fans, then I am one of them. If the Calarts style has ten fans, then I am one of them. If the Calarts style has only one fan then that is me. If the Calarts style has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth.
The funny part about that dumb calarts style goofiness a couple years back is that it was doctored to make it look like the same exact drawing. I like eye iris, I draw them rarely though, but I like the dot too^^ but yeah not every artstyle with highlights is anime!

Personally, I prefer my drawings to be pseudo realistic cartoons in terms of anatomical proportions with backgrounds that vary from fantasy architecture and environments, or medieval/colonial scenes. Or I'd actually just draw realistic anatomy and clothing, but regardless, everyone just labels it as "anime" or "manga".

This is why I don't call anyone's art styles "anime" or "manga" unless they self-label it as such. I call a lot of my art "manga" and "manga-inspired" because I draw a lot of inspiration from mangakas (I wouldn't call it "anime" unless it was animated; people saying "anime art style" to describe a still image is actually quite a pet peeve of mine), and I think that artists like myself have basically bled that inspiration into the online art community to the point where it's hard to distinguish one art style as "anime" or not. But it's a big argument because no one can really agree on a single "manga or anime" art style.
Like just off the top of my head; Astroboy, Kill la Kill, Beastars, Hunter x Hunter, The Girl from the Other Side, Chainsawman and Nichijou (My Ordinary Life) are all really drastically different styles of anime and manga (some are simpler, some are more detailed, some are softer, some are rougher) yet it's agreed they are all anime and manga. Yet no one can agree that ATLA is anime because "it's made in the West" and "it has the cartoon feel" yet "it has the art style", or even if the 90's Moomin cartoon is "technically" an anime because it was partially produced in Japan (If you want my opinion; I actually don't really care, I think of all of them as cartoons. I think that treating anime differently from other cartoons is mostly a cultural thing. And if you *really* want to get technical about it, Disney is the forerunner of both Western animation and Japanese anime, just looking from a historical perspective. That's why I use the labels "manga" and "anime" mostly as a cultural homage)
Anyway, as a digital artist who is an avid manga reader and casual anime fan, I'm glad you're saying that stylized =/= "anime art style" because I also get really annoyed about the discussion online. For different reasons, but with similar points.

Because my eyes are black ovals and I don’t draw noses or mouths- I feel like people associate cartoon-y styles with anime in general, no matter the change. I’ve also been trying to make a sort of “animation” style that involves mouths or a little more expressive eyes so I can use that in comics or animations and add a little more expression.

I've always been leaning into an anime artstyle, mainly bacause that what's most people that I saw online would draw like, and I really wanted to be as good as them; even though I didn't watch any anime at all. I just tought that was what 'good art' looked like.
Now? Yes, I do make anime fanart but I wouldn't consider myself a fan: I've only watched like... Two... Actually more than that, but all of the other ones are from the same franchise...
And I also don't really enjoy the weird jokes they make, I just wait for the occasional moments where they are funny.
But one time, someone saw me drawing a really messy tree, super sketchy, and asked: "That looks cool! Do you also draw anime?!?"
Uh, no, I mean yes, I mean, how do you know?!? You haven't even seen my normal art, why would assume that I do based off a random tree??

But overall that’s about it, and the reason I don’t want my art to be seen as “anime” is because the style doesn’t really appeal to me anymore 😭 I just kinda stopped liking it after my huge fixation on one particular anime back in 2022

Yeah. I started heavily with a anime style as a teenager myself at 14.
Then gradually as the years passed I learned more about anatomy and drawing varying body types and well. Also I grew a love of drawing my hair with a more detailed texture to it. More identifiable locks.
(My profile picture doesn't count I tried more realistic proportions in it and well it needs more shading to look good)
Anyways, the only thing somewhat anime about my art style is the eyes I guess? Although proportionally they're usually smaller than those of most anime characters unless I'm going for a sort of cutesy small child look. I like drawing defined noses myself and more defined lips on some characters. I draw the eyes with a highlight and irises but I don't complicate it too much. I want to be able to give my characters the ability to emote with their pupils after all. I tried the black dots look and it looked disturbing with some of my characters. Too dead inside.
So yeah I get the feeling.

    • @Rosemadi.artist
      @Rosemadi.artist  5 месяцев назад

Haha the black dot eyes don't work for everyone. I know you can also color the eyes to be blue dots or hazel dots but I've never done it. But yeah I agree that my eye shapes are also the most anime thing about my art, especially since I draw open lines instead of shapes

Ironic, indeed : Stylized Art isn't indeed Anime BUT Anime is an Art Style.
It has genres and tropes which are specific to it but you can't call anything resembling it an Anime.
Avatar is the best example in my opinion : it uses some animesque tropes but you can clearly see it's a western cartoon, first and all.

This has always bugged me, I get not everyone is into art/anime/cartoons or whatever, but there seems to be a grey area in animation where you are 50/50 gonna be seen as anime or not. I'm talking the League of Legends type of art, RWBY, Avatar (the last airbender, not the blue furries), and I supposed Stephen Universe type stuff (I'm old, so I'm not exactly familiar with that era of cartoons). I think it would help if this style of art had a proper recognized name. While I like 'stylized art' it doesn't exactly sound specific to whatever this style is, so if we could all collectively choose a term, it could blossom into it's own genre.
Perhaps a prerequisite list of shows that define it would be good as well, cuz I'm starting to doubt my Stephen Universe comparison.

i think that calling something anime isn't inherently wrong since anime just means animation, so long as its a moving picture it is anime with cartoons just being a specific style of anime/animation and like in America there could be a widely varied amount of art styles. for example id say there are actual anime and manga with a SOMEWHAT similar artsyle to yours at specific points like classic Akira Toriymama or Panty and Stocking or even at some points mob psycho 100. the problem isn't calling it anime its the fact that people always have something specific in mind when referencing anime, most commonly Shonen, the likes of DBZ or Naruto or some newer ones like Chainsaw Man or JJK, which focus more on realism and action vs cartoons which are defined as being more expressive and comedic an example of which being the CalArts style. at which point its the equivalent of someone comparing the likes of family guy to something like invincible and vice versa as they are both animation they still are very different for specific reasons and its insulting when someone doesnt see that.

    >_> Apparently I'm in the rare few that is more between Realism and Anime. but because I was influenced by art styles that are more "Fine art" ish and Manga than actual anime. The Salior Moon Manga pulls back details in some areas so they could do *more* details in others. Same with most of Clamp's works in the Manga. XXXHolic, the Manga, has a very drasticly different style compared to Clamp but it has that push and pull. But the biggest influence that I've noticed was Amano Yoshitaka. The Same artist that did Amon Saga, Vampire Hunter D cover art, and Final Fantasy's logos and concept art.
Once I learned how to do anatomy (which wasn't in high school because the art teacher would not teach me. It was outside classes and even college that *wasn't* a dedicated Art school but still had the Fine Arts Degrees but also allowed me to learn Art History. I have huge issues actually with how the dedicated art schools handle art because I have seen too many people give up art because they went to one of those schools.) I went hog wild with pushing into those details and fluid motions. I don't care if people call it anime because those anime artists had to learn the fundementals as well. As well as cartoonists and any animators.
Style is based on your influences over the years, your mistakes, and your understanding of the concept of design and the canvas (both digitally and physically in this case). Your style changes constantly because you're constantly learning and understanding new things about what you can do with your art. There will be times you'll like the new thing better. It's why Picasso can go from Realism, to Cubism, to his Rose Period and then to his Blue Period and all of that having *VASTLY* different looks. Dali couldn't draw horses, but he leaned into that lack of knowlage to develop into his style even more so of the Narrative Surrealism. (though he could draw people. it's why his drawing of people looked correct when he draws them without abstracting them when you look at his sketches of horses however..... You'll realize that he always struggled with horses even though he tried to get a better understanding with studies) And it's harder to do *actual* simplfication than it is to lean into details because it's how we see the world. When you understand how simplfication actually works to make something appealing, that's the harder part. Knowing to put that simplfication vs where to put in that detail you want, and keep it feel lively and not flat and cardboard. (I also never cared about the use of nudity in anime because if you look at a lot of paintings.... they're in the nude unabashingly for "no apparent reason" other than they could do it or it was accepted in the art world. So why would anime be any different? There's 4 different sculptures by different artists of David and all of them in the nude. Though one does lean to the erotic but that's neither here nor there.)

    • @Rosemadi.artist
      @Rosemadi.artist  5 месяцев назад +1

I've heard that too, but a little different: that it's hard for a realism artist to do simplification, but easier vice versa. Nudity in art I agree is very common, but I also believe that context matters. Thanks for your comment!

Avatar The Last Airbender is American anime. Anime is big features on the face. Exaggerated eyes and mouth to push the emotional impact. Also anime is made on 3’s. The anime community isn’t a monolith. I’m sure there’s probably some anime you’d enjoy but it seems you have projected a stigma on anime. I love animation no matter anime or everything else including stop motion and 3d.
Nudity isn’t strictly in anime. Art is subjective and the puritanical nature of people fears of nudity you’d be surprised because most art with nudity is not p*rn.
Black dot eyes are what One Punch Man has a very anime anime.
Try not judging art so strictly you are creating a box for you to stay stuck and never grow in. Feel free to challenge yourself and don’t see a whole art community as “bad” because you are harshly judging them. Especially now when we fighting for our voices to be heard against ai. Acting like we are better than anime artists will divide our fight for our jobs to stay relevant. Just hoping that you understand where I am coming from because you seem nice and I think every artist should have at least a basic respect for what we do between us no matter if you 3d artist or anime we need to stick together.
