- The Dash 8-400 is easily the most popular regional airliner in Canada, but I haven't actually flown on it with Air Canada Express - until now!
Here's the story of what turned out to be quite an interesting flight from Calgary to Regina.

I used to be a flight attendant. Most passengers don’t realize the real reason the passenger ( & crew ) count must be perfect. In case of a crash in helps to know exactly how many to look for. Just say’n.
Nobody cares! Lawyers at the airline are the only ones that worry about it. Passings carry about getting to their destination on time and their luggage to be flying with them. That’s it!

Did you fly for Air Canada (not the regional carrier)?
Usally the only time I have connecting gates next to each other is when I have like a three hour layover. If the connection very tight it is usually at one of the big airports (Chicago O'Hare, Minneapolis, Atlanta, etc) and you have to run from one side of the airport to other.
This happened to me recently in Chicago where I had a 2:45 layover and arrived on gate H7 and departed from H5, then coming home our flight was delayed and we had to speed walk our way across multiple terminals and the connector train in under an hour!

For all the people sniggering about the name "Regina", it is Latin for Queen. Queen Elizabeth signs her name, "Elizabeth R" (Elizabeth, Queen). The male version is "Rex".
I used to work at YYC airport until very recently. One thing that many passengers don’t know is the number of flights that have a gate change every day… some flights have a double gate change and that is not transmitted to the passenger in any way and some lose their flights because of it. That happens mostly to the main airline that is based here.
I do love your music and how interesting that the crew for your connecting flight was on this flight, at least you could walk along with the crew!
I remember a few years back taking an A/C Dash Q400 out of Fort Mac. We had to climb a staircase to get into the plane. I enjoyed it and the flight to Edm.
Regina Airport looks beautiful! I can really tell that the smallest Canadian Airports have pretty features!

I love the Dash 8. Flew many times from Cranbrook or Calgary to Vancouver, Victoria or Nanaimo return. Uncomfortable seats but the flights were short. I absolutely love the high wing...easily makes up for the seat discomfort. Love this plane.

Really weird to see the prop almost 'stop' as the pilot throttled back after take off and it synchronised with your camera speed.

I flew quite often between Johannesburg and Bloemfontein (South Africa) on the old Q300 and later the Q400. Was quite enjoyable . The CRJ was also sometimes employed on that route and I sometimes flew with that as well.
Regina now has a Maple Leaf lounge very small one but they have it now

Always enjoy your trip reports Alex. I have to say that since this summer I have found YYC in particular a hellish place for connecting and i really don’t think Westjet or AirCanada are ready for us all to be come back yet, my flights to Penticton and Puerto Vallarta and back were all delayed, without food or subject to multiple gate changes. Nice to see you showing us an unfiltered situation much like I have experienced this year.
Nice to see you come to my home airport even if it’s for the shortest connection ever.

At my home base (Kamloops CYKA) I dodge lots of Q400s. 😀
A couple of years ago I spent a weekend in Regina to check the place out. I liked it, despite it feeling like Edmonton's Mini Me. I was planning to leave Vancouver and had a list of towns that looked promising. The top two on my list were Kamloops and Regina.

Interesting to see the Q400 taxying on a single engine.
I flew on a Q400 when I was 6,and well it’s was nice,I was sitting alone got a good view of the engine! And I love planes that was a jackpot flight:

you think 1 hour 30 min delay is bad, while my flight in a dash 8 300 from Toronto was delayed twice supposed to fly at 9:20am left at like 1:10PM

I can see all the lemmings (like in the 1980s classic game) going from gate to gate to gate. Probably not funny then, but a great story to share. One thing to note is I didn't get the overly salted pretzels on my AC Halifax to Toronto flight last week!
Love those PW Canada PT6's ... reliable and versatile ... you could strap those onto a tube and get yourself into space, I bet!
The Q400 has PW150s which are much bigger and more powerful than PT6s…
You should try Toronto City to Montreal. The short runway at YTZ makes the landings sometimes brutal with how hard they brake.
Love the Q400. My favorite is the Beaver of course. Happy Longview took over all DeHavilland and CL 415 aircraft. It prevented an Avro Arrow.
Why what happened? Was Bombardier going to cancel? Seems foolish from them since the Q400 is a golden goose product

4:53 ENGINE ROAR!
I know it is being a bit pedantic, but there is a big difference between knee room and leg room. I hate bulkhead seats because while they have an abundance on knee room, there is absolutely no room to stretch your leg out. Last time I got a bulkhead seat, it was on a five hour flight. Due to turbulence, we had to remain seated most of the flight. Five hours without being able to straighten my legs out left me with some awful leg cramps. Give me a 30 inch pitch and floorspace underneath the seat in front of me any day.

@@barontaylor7139 Can confirm, I'm a CSA here in Regina, Flight route for the aircraft was YUL-YXE-YQR-YUL. Unfortunately we don't have that route anymore with the new winter schedule

I’m from sask and no one will ever do a walk through of the terminals. Sask doesn’t get put on national news anyways so don’t even bother doing one. That’s how we feel in sask. No one pays attention to us
Last time that happened to me, I was travelling with my late Dad who was 89 at the time. The only difference, it was here in YYZ travelling to YQY and add a 3rd change to it🤪. My Dad hadn’t flown in more then 20 years, but thankfully there was an electric golf-cart people mover around the last two times. Otherwise I think he would have said “f**k it, I’m going back home” 😉

I would really enjoy flying a Q400....... if it had three abreast seating and 4 more inches of legroom. That would make about 50-55 seats I suppose. 78 seats is really tight.
Dash 8 schedules usually have lots of padding in them. Example: ytz to yul. Faster than YYZ Yul my jet.
What type of camera do you film your flights with?

Best Canadian insult ever. 🤣 Also being based out of Calgary, I'm not sure I ever want to fly an Air Canada flight...they still haven't refunded me from my covid-cancelled flight, and no clear way to contact them to make it right except by phone, and I'm a millennial, so we don't use phones.
I booked Toronto to Baltimore with AC. It's looking like it will be a Bombardier CRJ900. I have nothing against the Bombardier per se, but I have been on one before. I was hoping for a Dash 8. The only turboprop I have ever been on was a DHC-5 Buffalo. That gate thing could have been a real issue for ppl with mobility issues. Don't get me wrong, I can go the distance, I just need more time.
One day when I was flying from Vancouver to Kamloops, a similar miscommunication occurred that sent me and my great aunt to a different gate…only for us to be sent back to the original gate

OK, someone will know this, at 6:56 what are those circular ground features on the bank of the river? I've seen similar elsewhere in North America whilst flying over and often wondered what they are.
Irrigated fields. The sprinkler system rotates around the centre.

@@egpx No crop in particular, just anything that needs water and is worth enough to jstify the cost. Around here that means corn and grains like alfalfa.
