I’ve flown myself there a few times! I visited the Gander air traffic control centre and they had a great story. They said one time the Scottish controllers (who own the other side of the Atlantic) called them and said “hey so we have a French airplane, going from France to France, and they wanna cross the Atlantic to get there”. The Gander controllers had to explain that yes, it has a French airport identifier, but it’s actually on this side so send them over!
@@afcgeo882 yes, but they do not have French airport ID codes (beginning with LF). Saint Pierre (LFVP) and Miquelon (LFVM) do, which are oddities in ICAO airport IDs.
I have been to St. Pierre many times but never by plane. When I was younger, my grandmother lived in Fortune and the owner of the ferry was her neighbour so he took me over several times. I have returned 3 times as an adult as well, beautiful spot. Glad you got to visit Alex.
Hi my parents are from Saint Pierre and that is how I have dual citizenship 🇨🇦🇫🇷. I've been to Saint Pierre and Miquelon several times growing up. Most of my family and extended family are still there
Great video Alex. I did not know this French island existed. I live in Pennsylvania in the U.S. I am putting this on my bucket list. I love Canada and my neighbors to the north. Keep traveling safe. Love your videos!!!
You can actually fly direct to Halifax aswell, I recently discovered American Airlines has seasonal service to Halifax, which would make going to Saint Pierre very easy
That was amazing thanks!! Being from Halifax I've always been fascinated by Saint Pierre and Miquelon. Besides the cars and the electrical outlets, I also noticed all the roadsigns are of European standards. You've convinced me to visit, thank you!
I'm glad you spent time showing us Saint-Pierre and Miquelon not just the flight. It must be mind boggling to visit this small piece of France just a few kilometers from the coast of Canada where most everything looks European from the French cars, street signs, electrical reciprocals and currency and much more. I wonder how many Canadians are aware of this place?
Speaking as a German, what I have seen in this video mostly doesn't look French at all to me. Primarily I see the houses and think: "North-America!" Although to be fair, similarly flimsy housing with poor isolation seems to be common in Scandinavia, Iceland and northern Russia as well, accounting for large but sparsely populated northern areas where probably less than 5% of the European population live.
I grew up in Newfoundland and always assume St. Pierre would be very similar just a different language. The first time I went there was while I was doing my flight training. I was blown away. It may be a stones throw from Canada but it is 100% European.

I hopped over on foot while I was visiting Newfoundland. The car ferry is relatively new: Canada drug its feet on building a suitable dock at Fortune and it was only opened last year. Previously there was a ferry only for foot traffic. If you return, be sure to visit the Ark Museum. They have a guillotine there, used once in 1889, the only time a guillotine was used in North America.
As a student I interned at the DGAC (french FAA) for a month and people would joke about how well equipped and costly this airport is (state of the art ILS, fully staffed ATC and firefighters...) for the level of trafic it has... But it's their only reliable connection to any major city and having a direct flight to Paris in the summer really means a lot !
St Pierre and Miquelon is definitely a pretty unique place, shows that even a place so small could have a history so rich. When the islands were finally resettled in French hands in 1816, they were resettled by Basques, Bretons, and Normans. That's why you see the flags of these respective groups on the unofficial St Pierre and Miquelon flag at 9:59 And regarding the maritime boundaries for fishing, I understand how they feel. Their EEZ literally looks like a bitten Dum-Dum lollipop! Going the tourism route is the right move.
Not really unique and definitely not rich history. The French and other Western European groups were claiming land as their own, killing and brining disease in the American continent well before 1816. Western European nations were at a very low point during those times with political instability, revolts and plagues. instead of fixing their own problems they brought their problems to a whole other landmass.

After just seeing your video dashing across Canada to Newfoundland and Labrador, I definitely thought you should visit St. Pierre and Miquelon. Now YT recommends me this video. Nice.
Great video, and I agree that it is well worth a visit. I first visited as a 12 year old exchange Scout in 1965. The only flights at that time were from Sydney (by Air St. Pierre). The runway on the island was gravel and the aircraft was a DC-3 on busy days (summer tourist season) and an Aztec on slow days. Air St. Pierre was owned by the Gourrah brothers...Sam and Camile...back then. They were two wonderful gentlemen. I can still remember the DC-3 flights.
Excellent video Alex. I've travelled quite a lot in my life but I am native to these little islands which were taken possession of in 1534 by a sailor/navigator/discoverer named Jacques Cartier in the name of the then King of France, François 1er. Really liked your travel report and the images were gorgeous. Yes, the British and the French fought a lot over these little islands. In the end, the Britons left us the choice of either keeping Saint Pierre in the northwest Atlantic or Mauritius in the Indian ocean and because we had been there since a while mainly for fishing cod, the French government decided to stick with Saint Pierre et Miquelon in 1816 ... Funnily, in Mauritius, everybody still speaks French nowadays... Also the runway in Saint Pierre is now 6300 feet long although it was initially planned to be 8,000 feet but things didn't go as initially planned LoL Also, LFVP ( ICAO ) or FSP ( IATA ) is equipped with a high end CAT III ILS ( because of the fog which can get quite intense particularly in Summer ) ...
Cool video! It's been on my list of places to visit and thinking I'll use points to get over from Vancouver and then paying for the flight from St. John's and then possibly taking the ferry back into Fortune. Great chance to load up on French wines and cheese!
After reading about St. Pierre et Miquelon here and there so many times (including the times when the population rebels against the government over very local issues) I finally get to see parts of it in a video!
0:09 You pretty much got it! Also I find it interesting you flew there considering I spent a bit of time reading about this area and potential flying jobs there (being a dual-citizen aha).
I’d suggest going by boat then! You’ll get the chance to see many small communities on the way to fortune to the ferry terminal! It may be a long drive from St. John’s, but growing up in this area I definitely think it’s worth it
Saint Pierre looks just so beautiful, it's one of those special places that I would love to visit one day! I too agree on your somewhat unpatriotic remark about the Atr... It's soooo much quieter, comfortable and generally refined and sophisticated than the rugged Dash-8.

It is a very cool place Alex! Glad you went there... The wine selection is amazing 😉
What an excellent video Alex! Merci from Saint-Pierre !
I've always been curious about this French island off our coast. This was really cool to see!
As I was born in Montreal, Quebec; I knew the answer to your 'trick' question eh! :) Thanks for posting
Would definely consider visiting! Never knew about this
This was a fascinating trip and I greatly enjoyed watching. Thanks for the post.
Still quite a knee cruncher for ya. I flew 40 minutes from Kuala Lumpur to the island of Penang on a 737-400. I'm 5'8 and that was tough
Wow, Alex, thank you for another great adventure!
Thank you~ I've been waiting this for so long 😭
Oh wow that livery is beautiful
Thank you for this video. I've always been intrigued by these islands and would love to visit sometime.
Well I learned something today. Fantastic video. I now have a bucket list place to visit.
0:09 You pretty much got it! Also I find it interesting you flew there considering I spent a bit of time reading about this area and potential flying jobs there (being a dual-citizen aha).
Alec the Air Saint-Pierre ATR F/O 👀 That'd be something!
@@AlexPraglowskiAviation Oh yeah haha
Wow! Thanks for making this trip! I heard about this place when I was in school and thought it sounded exotic, and it seems to be.
This is absolutely amazing! I love small communities like this and I'd love to go see it myself one day
I’d suggest going by boat then! You’ll get the chance to see many small communities on the way to fortune to the ferry terminal! It may be a long drive from St. John’s, but growing up in this area I definitely think it’s worth it
Really good video. Thanks for posting. ... Subbed. 👍
Fascinating! I had never heard of the place! And, I'm from Maine, which is not that far away. Thanks for a great video!
Saint Pierre looks just so beautiful, it's one of those special places that I would love to visit one day! I too agree on your somewhat unpatriotic remark about the Atr... It's soooo much quieter, comfortable and generally refined and sophisticated than the rugged Dash-8.
Imagine telling your Wife or girlfriend, you are taking her To France and you land here.
Not a lie
Hey Alex one thing I noticed at 11:40 after you talk about home hardware you have a stack of wood from resolute forest products one of Canada's biggest forestry products companies
Was there a month ago by ferry. It's awesome. Also, that single bar of reception from Canada comes from a signal booster, or cell hub that's on the Ferry docked in the harbour.
Another great video Alex - super interesting. You're killing it lately! Thanks
It be interesting to see a video of the 737 flight from St. Pierre to Paris.
Looks a lot nicer than Calais did when I took the ferry over to get some cheap beer.
I always enjoy your videos very high caliber!!!
Saint Pierre is a beautiful place! I live in Newfoundland and travel there twice once with middle school on the ferry in fortune and another time flying air st Pierre for hockey and one game was aired all over France and we won!! They told us that the biggest plane was a 737!! But love the videos tho keep up the good work!!👍🏻
Loved it :). and St. Pierre looks a nice place to visit, though my local part of France, Nouméa, is only 18 000km away, would be earlier to get to
