- The De Havilland Canada Dash 7 is one of most unique airliners ever built. Able to seat up to 50 passengers with unbeatable STOL capabilities, it quickly found a niche operating into challenging airports with short runways. These days though, only a handful of them are left flying.
However, in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, is the world's largest civilian Dash 7 operator: Air Tindi. Back in July last year, they let me come along on one of their occasional scheduled flights with this rare quad-turboprop, down to Hay River and back!
A big, big thank you to Air Tindi for making this possible: airtindi.com/

Thank you so much, Alex, for showcasing our beloved Dash 7, our operations, and our commitment to serving Northern Canada! We're thrilled we were able to get you onto the Dash 7!
love your operations!! love how you guys are actually passionate about the Dash 7 and aviation. You're making good moves inviting him to cover you guys!
hello
Many years ago I was flying into Edmonton City Centre (YXD) with Time Air on a Dash 7. I was the only passenger and was talking to the crew (this was before 9/11) and they went on about the incredible STOL performance of the Dash 7. As we approached the airport the pilot actually said “Let me show you something.” He put the aircraft in a dive and touched down - and stopped - entirely on the displaced threshold. It was amazing. Love the channel, Alex.
Very nice. Always wanted to fly on one of these, but I don't think I ever will
I was a Captain on the Dash 7 for Pan Am Express for several years. The fleet was part of Ransom Airlines that used it flying into Washington National. Their trick, and one that Pan Am adapted, was to land on a “stub” runway that crossed the active runway. We could therefore operate without a landing slot as our operations (VFR) did not require being added to the lineup of other airliners vying for a landing slot in this very busy airport.
There were many captains of other airliners that would nervously ask the controller “What’s that aircraft doing landing on the crossing runway?”
The tower would calmly explain that “the Dash 7 will hold short of your runway, cleared to land”.
Loved that airplane.
Can I ask have you flew the dash 7 for your whole career or did you move onto a different aircraft
The Go pro shots of the landing were amazing
I can remember riding Dash-7's from Washington DC to Newport News over 30 years ago and still have a fond memory of them. Thanks for bringing them back for an encore.
It's sad PHF has less service now than it did back then and even 10-15 years ago. The Peninsula deserves more options than an hour+ drive to Richmond or Norfolk
I love that the captain took your go pro for flight deck footage.
the sound of the 4 turboprops would null me to sleep if it was a longer flight..such a nice calming sound..great job on getting the chance to fly on that airplane and a big thanks to the pilot for putting your GOPro on the windscreen!
I live in Yellowknife and my neighbor flies for Tindi! Haven't finished the video yet but looks like you were there during our bad forest fire season last summer.
I grew up in Yellowknife and remember watching Air Tindi floatplanes (and ski planes in the winter) taking off from Great Slave Lake - the NWT has such a cool and unique place in the world of aviation!
If only the dash 7 became as popular as the dash 8. It definitely wouldn’t hurt to see a dash 7 more often.
Air Koryo in North Korea supposedly has 2 IL-18 left, these are also 4 engine turboprops.
Remember flying on these as they were regular equipment for Time Air and Air BC between YVR and YYJ in the early ‘80s (along with Convair 640s). The quirky floor dip and basket of hard candies passed around on the very short flight come to mind. 😊 Thanks for the video and history Alex.
I hate to admit I would be absolutely unable to not blast 'Peanut Butter Jelly Time' on every takeoff in this plane.
Wheey-up ,wheey-up, wheey-up!!.
Great video as always I’m thinking Air Tindi has you as there unofficial videographer 😂
My friend will start flying the Twin Otters at Air Tindi very soon, such a cool airline.
Also I see the Transport Canada Dash 7 almost every day at the airport I train at!
wow cool, do u know what his pay is going to be about?
@@KuostA Unsure about her pay but she starts 4 days on 4 days off as dispatcher while she does the ground school, then does a mix while she's training then 4 days on/off as a FO.
@@nolanono2532 woooow. what a dream! def wonder what that type of pay is like. do u know what she did prior to getting that gig?
@@KuostA She got her floats endorsement with a friend some time ago and worked at a small seaplane operator who provided about 50 hours of floats experience, she just graduated from my flight school. This summer I'm working at that same floats operator and plan to get my floats endorsement!
@@nolanono2532 wow, congrats for u!! also a dream place to be for u! how much are u getting paid with them, if u don't mind, as I assess my own pathway.
Memories. I worked at De Havilland for about two years, back when they had the maiden flight of the Dash 7. Worked in the ground test group where they tested the strength of the air frame and many various components. Interesting times.
I was flying on Dash-7 almost every week to get to my customers back in the 90s, operated by Wideroes in Norway.
If I'm not mistaken, they had a fleet of 14-15 of them, operating on short runways all over Norway.
Very comfortable airplane I remember!
I remember the Dash-7 flying over the cruise ships that were docked in Nassau Bahamas and landing at the Paradise Island airport in the 1990's. This airport had an extremely short runway and the Dash-7 worked perfectly. This airport was closed in 1999 and is now real estate.
I used to work in the yard where JHQ is parked and in the hangar next to it. I still recognize many of the airplanes sitting there. Some are parked seasonally or short term-medium term, others haven't moved in years. That quonset hangar was the first permanent hanger ever built at YZF. The history of that little corner of the airport literally goes back generations, even before Buffalo came on the scene.
My dad flew and pulled wrenches out of that hangar back in the 80's.
Bravo Alex and Air Tindi. What a great clip to finish off a Sunday evening, Thanks.
Thanks for the video. I started my airline career on a Dash 7 and flew it for seven years, including a bit of mountain flying. What a great airplane to take-off and land at speeds like a Cessna 210 but easier to fly.
Last time I flew on a 4 engine turboprop was a Viscount in the 60s from Victoria to Vancouver. When I was working in PNG Air Niugini operated a Dash 7 into Tabubil, WP, PNG.
Thank you for an excellent video. Of course it was near and dear to my heart as I had something to do with the building of numbers 12 through 65. Mostly landing gear but a few other areas as well. After number 65, I moved to publications and spent the next year dealing with Flight Data publications for the Dash 5 and 7s. Very much enjoyed my time at De Havilland.
Lovely post! Glad you were at the right place and time to capture these fine aircraft.
That’s wild! Trans Capital was owned by Victor Pappalardo. He also owned City Express. So I’m sure I’ve work on some of those Dash-7. You also mentioned then coming out of Downsview. I grew up there. I would see Dash-7 overhead all the time. See them doing 1 engine out and feathering the prop. 1st time I saw them do it, though there was some big emergency going on… Also love those underwing window exits! Even jumping out of the port side one. 😜 It was an experience!!!
Thanks for bringing back so many memories of my introduction into an aviation and introducing so much Canadian aviation history to a younger generation! Thanks!!! 👍✌️
That's another magnificent video, Alex, thank you. Brilliant split-screen!
Hi Alex great video. As previously mentioned in a previous video the DASH-7 was the main stay of both Brymon Airways and London City Airways formally Eurocity Express out of London City Airport back in the late 80's. I enjoyed multiple flights on both these carriers for whom I worked so your video relives the sight, sound and classic lines of this once great airliner. Well done sir.
I saw them operating into Narvik city airport in the 80's for Wideroe airlines. Now I think this airport is gone.
Great stuff, Alex. Beautiful work.
Great video Alex, thanks for sharing!!
Greeting Alex from the U.K, I am so glad this video popped up, a big fan of Dash 7s. Here in UK, British Midland used to have a couple for the short airport shuttles, (G - BOAY and G-BOAW) there was one based in Birmingham (BHX)each day that flew 4/5 times daily to London Heathrow (HRW) the whole flight was less than 100miles, and short flight time as you can imagine, I was always in awe of take of landings, the pilots literally had them in the air within seconds of starting to roll down the runway, not unlike military Hercules, an expression used was Take off on a sixpence. One of my biggest life regrets was never getting the chance to fly on one, I didn't have much money at the time, and no cheap fares in those days, and when I did have the money, they had gone. ButI have my memories, and the take off and landings on both the main runway, and what is now a defunct short runway at BHX is still very vivid. This is a great video Alex, thanks for posting
Great work! Clearly an airline that is savvy and understands good publicity!
Another great video Alex! Thank you!
One of Air Tindi's Dash 7s frequents my airport. Very impressive. Fuel located centrally in the rear, pax tell me it's a comfortable ride. Can stop on a dime. Amazing
Your great videography aside, I really enjoy how well you researched this plane’s history down to tracking active Dash-7 aircraft in service. That was mighty kind of the pilots to mount your GoPro in the flight deck. Cool landing like butter.
Very interesting having the split screen at the end. Cockpit and landing gear. Well done Alex
My favourite turbo prop. Fantastic video, Alex.
Awesome video! Flew aboard these types between Montreal and Toronto Island in the heydays of City Express .
Super cool, I regularly watched guys load cargo into the plane in Pickle Lake ON. I always liked the quad prop on such a small plane.
I loved the Dash 7. Hawaiian Airlines used to fly them in the early 1980s. Flew on them a few times.
I sat left seat once on a "training flight" for PanAm. My friends were check airman for PanAm -7. Business was dead for PAA, so these pilots "had" to stay proficient. So, I got to go a lot. Too cool.
Dash 8's my fav however Dash 7's sound is music to my ears, great video, thank you..
fascinating video, thank you very much!
Thanks for the new video
Great video Alex.
Being a Hay River resident, i can add additional context. This flight was between our two forest fire evacuations last year. The second one last over a month. Just year before we also had flood evacuations. I am greatful for Air tindi they provide free flights home from the flood evacuations far nicer then the 5 hour drive from Yellowknife.
I was fortunate to work on these at AirBC in the late eighties as an AME. Amazing aircraft!
Oh wow, Dash-7’s are so common where I live (YXE, Saskatoon) I didn’t realize Tindi was the only major carrier. I always love watching them land while working. I’ll appreciate them even more now
Maybe I’ll fuel one some day if we can snag their contract!
Air Greenland 🇬🇱 had six or seven DASH 7 from 1979 to around 2010. These planes were solid work horses that revolutionized travel within Greenland. You always felt safe in a DASH 7. Air Greenland has always maintained a very high safety standard, winning international aviation awards for their strict adherence to safety protocols. Their mechanics took great pride in caring well for these aircraft.
They have now all been replaced with the DASH 8 as this aircraft is faster and cheaper to maintain, but they don’t hold quite as many passengers or cargo as the seven.
Today Air Greenland has a fleet of seven DASH 8s.
I flew on City Express Dash 7's between Toronto Island Airport and Ottawa in the 80's. Great service on an extraordinary airplane.
Nice split shot.
LOVE this content! such great ASMR. great coverage! what exactly is that dip in the walkway for?
Comox air show in the mid 1980’s, intermission, arrival of the sched Dash7 from YVR. It is an airshow they do a 1000 foot short landing, full reverse thrust props, 20 minutes later, less than 1000 foot take off, climbing like a homesick angel. What a plane. Without it they would not have been able to run London Metro Airport, in the Thames docklands
I flew that same route, but on a DC 3 with Buffalo.... Back in those days, you could see Dash-7s once in a blue moon where I was from, so the choice was clear... and, you could guarantee the DC 3, since that was the only plane to fly the route
Ah great video! Miss working the Dash-7! Worked on it with Trans Cap! How many times I tripped at that dip mid cabin lol
I worked somewhere we rented out a 727 regularly and watching them swap seats on your video brings back memories.
Flew from Edmonton up to the Echo Bay gold mine (about 200 km NE of Yellowknife) on their combi 727 a couple of decades ago. It was a bit weird to depart a large international airport and land on a gravel strip in the tundra.
Great vlog a plane on my bucket list but unfortunately one I will probably never get to fly on but this particular one that you flew on would be even more special to me as it is the same age as I am, but great vlog and keep up the great vlogs 😊😊😊
The Dash 7 is truly a Canadian Legend, we’re lucky to have one at our College! s/n 108, prev Reg C-GVWD
An amazing STOL aircraft! Flew in one out of LAX to Monterrey with a stop at JWA.
DH-7 is such a rare and beautiful airplane ✈️ ✨️ 💖 Fantastic video! I'd give pretty much anything to fly on one of those classic planes!
@jdomarsh OMG you're right! Hahaha 😁 that's what I get for responding to a video when I'm half asleep hahaha 😆
Thanks for correcting me
That was awesome Alex !!! :):):)
I did some maintenance on Dash 7’s at Voyageur Airways 25 years ago. I had forgotten about the floor dip.
The Dash 7 is indeed a remarkable plane, I flew a few time on a special version of the "Dash", a DHC-7-110 Dash 7 she is outfitted with long-range fuel tanks, a larger cargo door and strengthened cargo floor. the Dash 7 (VP- VBQ) is being used by the British Antarctic Survey, and my first flight was from Punta Arenas, Chile, to Rothera Research Station on Antarctica. Because of the age, BAS was talking about replacing the plane.
Congrats on 100k
Great Video!
I remember flying on one of these for the first time over 20 years ago. I marvelled at how short a takeoff the aircraft needed. Was even shorter than the Shorts 😂.
I worked for aerospace manufacturer Hamilton Standard (now Collins Aerospace) as a Quality Tech . During that time I inspected the Model 24 PF propeller barrels (hubs) used on the De Haviland Dash 7. There's a chance that my inspection stamp is on those parts.
Great video! Such a cool old bird.
Rip our beloved dash 7 never got to fly on them but will miss them so much😢😢😢
Enjoyed several -7 flights back in the day with Rocky Mountain Airways (or Rickity Mountain Scareways)...around Wyoming and Colorado, and a unique trip over to PID (Paradise Island Airport) just before it was closed in/and out of the 3000 ft runway from Miami
Love the Dash 7 and travelled a lot on these with Brymon Airways from London City to Paris CDG
I have seen a couple of these landing in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan!
Yay new Alex Praglowski video :). Watching it right now from Australia
I love C-FPBJ, comes to YQT all the time and I have a bunch of great shot of it.
That double prop shot is just glorious.
How Dash-7s were always so underappreciated is a pure mystery to me
That was an awesome video Alex. YHY was certainly “busy” while you were there with the 5T ATR at the terminal and then the Buffalo DC-3 landing as you were taxiing for the ride back to YZF. Is it more likely to catch a DH7 during the summer peak and is YHY the only scheduled route Air Tindi use them on?
There's currently 4x dash 7s sitting in YTZ in Toronto
I have a lot of fond memories of being a kid thirty years back and flying on these in Canada.
I flew on this this fall to get me to a mine sight. My grandpa flew these years ago I think it’s one of the coolest aircraft flying
I love your videos you should do a trip report from PDX to JFK on the JetBlue A320 I would love to see one!
Just flew from Wilson airfield in Nairobi with Air Kenya. Their 2 dash 7s were on the ramp along with Twin Otters, a dash 8-300, and a Buffalo (caribou?).
Very nice!
The best aircraft ever!!😍😍
The Dash-7 took a huge part in my childhood when the Dash-7 was the main airliner to Eilat.
I hope to meet a Dash-7 somewhen again.
But I don't understand someting- why the flight without allow carry on baggege?
To bad there's no market for these. I got to see one of the red ones fly out of Winnipeg after sitting for a few weeks. That was a couple years ago in the summer. I've been looking at trying to make a 1/72 model of one, it can be done but will take a few hours. To bad De Havilland is gone, Canada had great aviation at one time.
I currently work at DeHavilland Aircraft of Canada, so I can assure you the company is on a comeback. Bombardier made a hell of a mess but things are getting straightened out now.
@@alikatyeg3295Isn't it privatised?
happy 100k!
Good video 👍🇳🇴
The C-46 at 14:33....being like yooooo
Beautiful aircraft..🥰🥰
Absolute banger😎
Amazing!
I flew about 2500 hours on the airplane at Air Wisconsin back in the day. It was a great experience. Smooth, quiet and reliable at a cruise of about 210 knots. Not fast but remember, pilots are paid by the hour 😝
I hope u enjoyed ur experience rideing the dash7 i wish i could also fly the. Dash 7
Reminds me of my days flying in the far north... wonder if there are any old piston Otters you could get a flight on? Spent time in them and Twin Otters in the Canadian far north in the past!
When I first saw this I thought ... hmmm, that airframe would be a great candidate for electrification.
I was both surprised and please to see that - in the glacially slow, painfully change-averse world of aviation thta testing and development is already underway.
I also love to follow Harbour Air who ARE the kind of people who change the world.
Now if only the people who own the rights to De Havilland in Canada would "wake up"; a viable STOL aircraft that would have a great market could be fast-tracked based on any number of designs that THEY OWN THE RIGHTS to. It's just waiting on batteries (aren't we all), but that is coming at a much faster pace than people realize.
Love the cockpit view! Do these not have GPWS? Or does the gopro not pick it up?
I worked at porter airlines at Billy Bishop Airport from 2014-17. I got to see the dash 7s fly under the UN flag a few times out of there. great seeing these beauties flying still
7:45 Godly sound on T/O
5:23 Air Koryo still flies the IL-18. I would love to take that and the Dash 7 at some point!
I've flown on this plane quite a few times. Sure beat riding on the twin Otter!
Danke!
