I really love how you enunciate words, really helps understand the pronunciations! thanks a lot!
I'm really glad to hear that 😊
Moro. Olen ranskalainen ja opettelen suomea. Olisi kiva jos voisit tehdä videoita suomeksi, joissa puhuisit uutisista sekä Suomen kulttuurista ja muista asioista (suomen kielessä) :)
Kiitos paljon!
Kiva idea!
Here's a few others that come to mind: Hotdog, T.V., Radio, Auto, Sofa, Kiosk, Motorway (British). French: cravat, ananas.
Binge watching your videos now.. kiitos paljon!❤
You are simply awesome! You’re the best. I’m learning Finnish now because of you! Inspired by you. Thank you very much for your videos. For sharing.
I'm happy with your lesson !!
I'm glad!
Amazing Katya. You forgot to mention chocolate which is suklaa in Finnish. I guess it sounds pretty similar. Doesn't it? And Thursday is torstai. Isn't it? Anyway. It was a nice video. And so was the other one on your other channel. ^-^
OH yes! And thank you so much for taking the time to check out both videos!! :)
First, your videos are all sorts of awesome! Second, as a suggestion for future video(s), I'm very interested in learning how to say numbers and/or tell time.
Ahh okay, I have 1-10 but I'm planning on doing further up and also the shortened versions that people use when talking!
Nice video, Katia :) There's some words in finnish with the same pronunciation and words in portuguese: firma (work place); numero (here is número) and moi (we use oi, without m, to say hi). Hope see in the future a video about finnish names! Cheers from Brazil!
Oh that's super interested! Didn't know that, thanks so much for sharing! :)
And yes, I'll think of doing something related to Finnish names :)
Camera is Latin and means a room. The same word is in original meaning in kamari. In English it is in the from "chamber". Like so often the Finnish word is closer to the original.
Your videos are so cool :)
I bought myself a Finnish textbook. The plan of actually learning fell after like 2 lessons/chapters (whatever), so this is a nice thing to motivate myself to going back to learning.
I found a Finnish word that is a bit similar to Czech, which is lääkäri, in Czech lékař (you need a lot of imagination, but I swear, that when you have it, it is there). We have kamera too, instead of liiga we have liga, mikrofon, kompikace, kojot and purpurová... oh, and also šachy are šakki. And I should be doing something else, why am I even trying on this? :D
Aww thank you so much
Could you please make a video about thedays of the week?! Also, one of the most challanging parts of the language for people who start to learn Finnish is figuring out what the stem of the word is and how to find it... But I can't even imagine if it is possible at all to explain this unexplainable random Finnish thing! =))
Haha I definitely could !:)
And there's one very common and easy word "normaali" which of course means "normal"
There are hundreds of words which are actually the same in Finnish and German. So most of the words you mentioned in this video are more similar to German as to English :D Mikrofon, Komplikation, Känguru, Liga, Kamera, Violett for example.
The one I like most is actually the equivalent of Hamburger, "Hampurilainen"! I would really like to know the full story of how this translation came up, because normally, if people import names like Hamburger into another language, they just leave it as it is (Just like they imported Hamburger from German into English haha, they just left it as it is), the thing is, someone must have gotten the Idea to translate it correctly from German to Finnish at some point. In German, a 'Hamburger' could either be the meal 'Hamburger', or it could refer to someone from Hamburg. And it's the same in Finnish apparently, with the word 'Hampurilainen' you could also refer to someone from Hamburg, couldn't you? :)
Haha thanks for your videos, and keep it up! :)
Chris
Yeah it's certainly interesting to think about! And you're right I think it can refer to both! xD
There is actually an office for "maintaining the language" aka "Institute for the languages of Finland." They issue a proper finnish dictionary. For example computer was originally "kompuutteri", now it's "tietokone" or "information machine" .
Also: Awww
LapinPete I actually really like that concept, I'm not much of a fan of loanwords, they mostly don't really make sense and it gets worse and worse when people start cherry picking the words.
For example, the Americans just started using 'Burger', (instead of Hamburger) thing is, it doesn't make any sense if you're using it on its own completely out of context, it's like if you'd start using just 'Lainen' as another word for a Sandwich.. It doesn't really make any sense whatsoever, at least not in the original language. :b
:D
People use "Purilainen" as shorter version here. ;)
Puri is apparently a town in India.
LapinPete So this word now has 3 different meanings.
haha.
It gets more and more complicated, people should just stop using short names. ^^
Thank you very much
And thank you for watching! :)
Hi i want to learn Finnish, i really love culture but first i want a raam to rent it in Helsinki i tried so hard but did not found a suitable one.could yoh please help me 😊😊??
Omg! The pronounce of Microphone, coyote and league are the same in Portuguese, but it's different when writing: Microfone, coiote and liga
Thank you so much!!!! I live in Finland for 2 years but don't speak Finnish 😬
Aww thank you, I'm glad if I can help at least a little bit ^-^
There so many words in Finnish similiar to Portuguese but the meaning is totally different - For example these Portuguese words - elo link, lupa loupe, seis six, mato grass, alho garlic, velho old man, se if, sai go out, vai go, muita much, lento slow, pois therefore, vasta wide, multa penalty or fine. These are just few there are more.
Thanks for sharing!! :D
KatChats. You're welcome 😁 I know that cause I'm learning Finnish, I love this language. by the way I'm from Brazil 😊. Keep doing great videos. You're lovely though 😊
These words are similar (even in sound ) to my Dutch language too :
(microfoni , i learned now)
Auto ,sitruuna (citroen ), herra (heer) radio, televisio(n) , kilo , poni, , monument(i) . aksenti , stadion . Also with a bit of an extra letter sometimes .
But words like .oma en melko ..
Are difficult for me . Because in Dutch these have already a totally different meaning🤭🤣. Oma = grandma in Dutch
And melk(-o) Is milk . But im learning!👍💪
I will learn Finnish and Italian these languages are very easy

Oh, a little disappointed cuz I was expecting a little more basic words like:

lasi - glass
lukko - lock
mainita - mention
merkki - mark
moni - many
saippua - soap
sama - same

Interestingly, coyote is also pronounced kye-oat. Jaguar has at least 3 pronunciations. It's said as either jag-warr or jag-wire in the US, and jag-yoo-ar or jag-yoo-er in the UK. At least I think one or both of the examples given of UK pronunciations of the word is correct. I'm American, so I'm much more accustomed to hearing the two American pronunciations. And yes, I realize jag-wire makes little, if any, any sense in terms of how the word should be pronounced, but that's how some people here pronounce it.
thank you very much
