When I was 10 a neighbor lady taught me how to throw knitting. It wasn’t until years later my sister-in-law says to me, why are you knitting backwards meaning left handed. I never realized that until she brought it to my attention. Tho I’m right handed, I just can’t teach myself to knit right handed. So thank you for these left handed videos.
Hi Rachel, LOL it's so funny to hear your story. Both of my parents are left-handed and so am I. When my right-handed sister learned to knit, she encountered the same problem! My advice is, if it works for you, stick with it. If not, try the "other" version. Happy knitting! 😀
@@nobleknits I just can't right hand knit, many times I've tried. Tho with crocheting no problem. That I was taught right hand. Lol Love your videos, thank u!
I am also right handed but the person who taught me to knit was left handed, and she tried to teach me to knit right handed, but I turned my head and well here I am still knitting left handed some 50 years later
I can't wait to practice the continental style. I am a leftie and I am a crocheter. There are times when I want to knit but it has always been so awkward and takes forever to finish a project. After watching your video, I feel so much more confident in mastering the skill of knitting. Thank you so much!
Thank you for the lefty video! I love your teaching style. This is the first time that I have truly understood how to knit left-handed without becoming frustrated and just quitting. Please make more!
Thank you for your kind words! I'm so happy to hear the video was helpful. If there is something you'd like to see as a lefty knitter, please let me know. 😀
@@nobleknits I'd like to see various cast ons and bind offs done left-handed. I especially want to learn the stretchy ones, and the right-handed videos are too frustrating for me to follow.
After 50 years of knitting right handed (though I am a lefty) with the "stake between my legs method" I am beyond thrilled to have finally learned how to knit left handed through your video. The continental method is amazingly easy and my work is so much better, thanks!
Hi Sue, Oh boy...I remember the "stake between the legs" method way too well! I felt so embarrassed and never wanted anyone to see me knit. I'm so happy to hear that you've found this video and are knitting Continental! 😀
I wish I could erase everything I ever learned about knitting and just start over. These left-handed videos are SO helpful and it makes a huge difference that you are actually left-handed and not just reversing the video like a lot of left-handed videos. You actually understand!
Hi Kelly, I agree...I had to unlearn right-handed knitting, which for me, was very embarrassing. I used to hold one of the needles like a stake between my knees and then use the other needle to make the stitches. Just keep going and after a while, you won't remember the old knitting style.
Thank you for this video. I took my granddaughters, one of which is a lefty, to a knitting class and the teacher didn't really want to teach her how to knit left handed. My Granddaughter was clearly struggling and getting frustrated. I kept asking the teacher to show her how to do it left handed and she just kept saying well you can go on RUclips to learn it. After a few more comments like that and my Granddaughter almost in tears, I insisted that she start over and show her the left handed way. I paid good money for this class and wanted it to be a positive experience for my GKids. The teacher did finally show her and my she picked it up right away and was no longer frustrated. I felt like if I'm paying this kind of money, I want the teacher to teach!!! This will be a great video to show her for further reference.
Hi Debbie, I'm glad your granddaughter was able to learn to knit left-handed! I have often seen teachers push lefty students to knit right-handed because the teachers don't know how or feel confident enough to teach left-handed since everything is reversed. I do have a lefty knitting 101 course as well as a lefty 30-day growth course if she wants to learn more: www.nobleknitsu.com
Thank you for sharing the continental method for lefties. Crocheting has always felt more intuitive to me, so your comment about this method feeling similar to that really resonated.
Thank you so much. I’m left handed and I’ve tried to learn to knit for about 50 years. After lessons it was so frustrated. Of course it was right handed and I was knitting so tightly that I couldn’t get the needles in and my neck hurt. I quits for years. Tried again, more frustration. I can crochet beautifully but I was self taught so then I tried to knit left handed. I could make it happen but it wasn’t relaxing. Then after decades a friend showed me continental and it clicked. Still I was self taught because I was left handed. I have always thought I did it backwards. Your video cleared things up beautifully. Even though I could make pretty stitches I have now learned that I was always knitting and pearling off of the back of the stitch. Woo hoo I can move onto a whole new level. Your video is so clear. Thank you again.
Thank you so so much. I have been knitting since I was four years old. My Grandmother and Mother taught me to knit via the throw method right handed. I tried your right handed continental video and purling was a nightmare. This video is a game changer for me! Flipping the needles was all I had to do! Lefties unite!
Thank you!! First time knitting, I'm a leftie. This video was phenomenal. I do crochet and I feel like that background does help with understanding tension and things, so that's a bonus. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this! I'm 23 and I learnt to knit when I was 8, but my grandma showed me the right-handed method because she's right-handed. For years I would knit and I loved it, but it was also a chore and I would struggle. I always thought I was just new and inefficient. After botching yet another project, I decided I would learn left-handed knitting first next time. I think the initial tutorials I found weren't very clear and I was fighting this "natural" right-handed method, and the whole thing felt bizarre so I left it. Cut to my 23rd birthday and a friend got me a pattern and some yarn, so it was the best possible excuse to try again. I just searched for a left-handed tutorial, yours was in the list so I clicked on it by chance, and I'm so so happy I did! You explain it all so well and so clearly! I've started knitting the pattern (it's a hat) and I definitely feel more empowered to try new and challenging patterns! I feel like I've unlocked a superpower, this hat is going so smoothly so far (fingers crossed it stays that way!) and I think a big part of that is because I'm now knitting in a way that's more natural to my body. Thank you so much for this. I have the joy of knitting back in my life, and better than before!
Thank you SO MUCH! I bought yarn and needles yesterday in a whim and I already began knitting a plain scarf. It is so well explained and being lefty it is so har to find tutorials for left handed people. Thanks again! :*

I learned American flicking when I was a child, and taught myself Continental. Found Entrelac (a pretty series of knitted square rotated 45 degrees -- so you finish about 8 stitched but if you knit back backwards, you don't have to turn the work) and taught myself how to knit backwards which is very similar to what you do except it is like Eastern Continental in that when you approach the stitches knitting backwards, the mount of the stitch is reversed. My dad died of Alzheimer's and a few years ago I was also having memory issues so I concentrated on knitting the most difficult things until they became easy, so it stimulated my brain to retrieve my memories again. I am not forgetting like before. So I am always delighted to learn another way to knit. It also is good to fight any stiffness in my fingers from arthritis that I have recovered from. Every knitting style uses the fingers in a different manner. So I am delighted for my brain health and that of my finger dexterity. Knitting is good for the health of our brain and it is a relaxing experience. I knit several hours daily. Happy to have found your channel. As a child when I broke my right arm, I learned to write left-handed and I am still adequate with my left hand.
Hi courag1, Thank you for sharing your knitting story. Knitting really does stimulate the brain. What I love about knitting is that you can keep learning something new your entire life and there will still be more to learn! Happy knitting! 😀
Thank you for this. As a leftie who was forced to do everything right handed, I never could pick this up bc I wasn’t being taught how to do this lett handed. I wanted a new hobby but I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do until I saw this.
I would love to see more beginning videos from you I got the casting on and pick that one up really quick but trying to get my first row started I’ve been struggling with that for almost 2 weeks now. It’s quite frustrating
I can not thank you enough for this video! I am so glad you didn’t show the continental style at first because I would have been lost. But by first understanding how the stitches come together, I can see how continental makes sense. Thank you!

Since covid-19 started, and schools stopped , I decided next time I come out of my house it would be with a few new skills. So I put a few things on my list like crochet, knitting, embroidery, and drawing styles that are different from my usuals. when it came to crochet and knitting I struggled so much with all the right handed tutorials, but finally I was able to find the correct vids! After months of trying... this video is finally what helped me understand how knitting works! The funny part is that I was pausing the video as I learned, but ended up automatically knitting continental style exactly BECAUSE I know how to crochet first and foremost!
I was taught how to knit by my left handed Mother. I am right handed. I watched this to freshen up my memory. And to relearn purl. I have been purling all this time thinking I was knitting. Thank you for the video.

So glad I found your channel! I crochet left handed. I had been taught English style knitting right handed, but it somehow felt awkward. I finally figured out that I was comfortable holding the working yarn in my right hand, but the awkwardness came from trying to work as a right handed person. Now I’m trying left handed continental style knitting. The working yarn is in my right hand and I’m knitting left handed! YAY it makes sense! 🥳🥳🥳
Thank you so much...is the first time ever I see someone teaching slowly and smoothly..God bless you..I have hope I'll do much better & easy in my learning experience.

Thank you thank you thank you thank you! ❤ My mom was right handed and she tried to teach me to knit. I didn't realize I was actually a lefty until years after she passed. I could never grasp the concept of knitting because of holding the needles and yarn in a right-handed method. This makes it so much easier!
Very helpful, thank you. I crochet a lot and have for years. I didn’t realize the difference in knitting styles and it looks much easier for me since I’m used to holding my yarn that way already! Thank you again!
Finally a lefty tutorial 🙏 loved it. As for continental! It’s taking a lot more time an effort to keep the yarn in my right hand and flipping it between K & P
Thank you! Back when I was learning to crochet, I just couldn’t get it bc I was watching someone who was right handed and my brain could not flip it for some reason. Once I watched another leftie, I got it immediately. I can’t wait to get started.
I am left handed as well. Been knitting for ten years. I tried Continental for a year and just couldn’t get the tension right. This has helped so much. I’m going to try this right away. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for showing left continental knitting! I have tried it right handed many times, but could never do it, so I'm actually crying with joy right now!!
Thank you 🩷✨ this video was so helpful! I've been crocheting since I was 7 yo, my grandma taught me, but I've had the hardest time trying to learn how to knit being a left handed. You explain in such a detail that now I'm inspired to try it!
I was purling wrong! No wonder my stitches were always weird and twisted. THANK YOU. At first I thought I couldn't make my fingers coordinate properly to get the needle to grasp yarn brought down from above. Your calm voice helped me keep up the effort till I got it. It's still harder than the 'wrong' way, but I am confident that I can get this embedded in muscle memory.
Hi Lacey! I'm glad you found it helpful...I felt like giving up when I knitted right-handed as well. Let me know if you have any questions or need other leftie videos. 😀
Thank you so much, my past few attempts to knit on needles in the past always fell apart after setting the first row, I was finally able to knit a few rows of a little practice swatch thanks to this tutorial! I'm going to practice the purls know that I've got the rhythm of the knit for the first few rows!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! Finally... I can actually knit and purl. Finally!!! And my fingers don't feel like they're fumbling about to get things in the right place. Golly: game changer indeed. My great thanks :)

I am so thankful there are actual videos of these. I know how to crochet and I always thought knitting was complicated so I never did it but now I'm willing to take that challenge to learn but it was 1000x Harder since I'm a lefty! Thank you for this video

Thank you for this! This is huge for me. When I was learning how to knit, both my Mom and Grandma couldn't figure out how to teach me. Over time, I taught myself an interesting combination of right and left hand knitting. This worked out fine until I tried to knit socks. This is what brought me here. Oh, Im so happy finding videos for lefties) our russian resources for lefties are so rare and boring, i thought i could never knit, but your videos inspired me))
I am left-handed and have been knitting for about 2 months now. This tutorial was the first one I watched and it got me going, so thank you! Now I am ready to attempt more skills. I am confused about K2tog & SSK when knitting left-handed, as in my working needle is in my left hand and my stitches are moving from my holding needle (right needle) to my working needle (left needle). I completed a pair of baby booties in garter stitch, and my SSKs leaned in the correct direction but they were the stockinette pattern, (with the Vs) rather than the garter bumps. And try as I might, multiple ways, I couldn't get them to not to look like 2 little stockinette stitches sitting in there with all my garter stitches. Every tutorial I find for SSK for left-handers ALWAYS shows the demo in stockinette. Well, I can do that. What about SSK in garter? Lastly, some experts say left-handers should always switch K2tog & SSK in a pattern because these will lean the opposite way for lefties, but others say not to do that...I am getting discouraged because I want to be able to do lace and cables and knit more than dishrags and plain shawls. I have asked other knitters for advice and been told by more than one "Well you should just learn to knit right-handed" or"there's no such thing as handedness in knitting because you use both hands" which makes me sad, but I'm not quite ready to give up yet! So how do you accomplish SSK in garter stitch, left-handed?
Ok thank you for the tutorial. I finally understand this and could make a simple square knit. That continental style is impossible for me, as I cannot comprehend how you do it, but at least I’m able to do something. Next step is to make a scarf or a hat!
You're welcome! Let me know if there are any other lefty knitting videos you'd like to see. 😀

I’m getting ready to start a knitting group and one person interested in learning to knit is left-handed so this video was super helpful. My question is, do you have to adjust patterns by mirroring them or anything like that?
Hi, your video really helped me try this, I have autism and its gets frustrating when I don't understand how. But your video really helped, it's slow and visible. Keep up the good work
Thank you so much for this video! I decided I wanted to learn how to knit recently and I didn't realize being left-handed might be an issue until I began trying to follow right-handed tutorials. I guess once you learn to knit you can kinda "reverse" things but as a beginner it's really confusing to figure out how to follow something but with the opposite hands. Anyway, this video was great! I'm gonna practice my knitting now. :)
My Aunt taught me to knit right handed, 50 yrs ago, being left handed I taught myself how to flip it, she didnt teach me to pearl tho, yrs later a lady from another Aunts sewing club offered to show me how to pearl, turns out she knit right handed (she was in her 70s and she learned backwards) as she was left handed. So I learned and taught myself to swap it as well, I do the throw knitting and since I am slow and a perfectionist I have only completed baby hats and hand warmers on do needles. Ivbeen hoping to find some one who knits contenetial style so I can try a little bigger project, thanksfor this video
Thank you so much I never thought to knit left handed. As I crochet right handed I never thought to try left handed to avoid all the frustration that makes it hard for me to enjoy knitting. Yes I use both hands for most things. Just not crocheting lol
I struggled with casting on but then got used to it quickly, but then came wrapping the clockwise that’s where I’m stuck right now! Hopefully I can get the hang of it
Ok so I do got it right, I'll pull out my knitting needles and try again. I'm left handed, was trying to knit right handed and got con fuddled, couldn't understand why it wasn't working. Now I know, thank you. Will be watching more when I find my needles
I've been knitting since I was 50 so this is about almost 10 years Continental style is the best way to go. through it there's not a lot of us lefties out there. I want to tell you great instruction by the way I'm looking for a rice Stitch left-handed and I've just learned my skills reverse to my left and right stitches to get the effect of reading patterns but could you address that lace knitting
Thanks very much! My right-handed sister has been trying to teach me knitting but it's been difficult for her to mirror-image everything (it's easy, rotate thru the fourth dimension!). So this is quite helpful. Isn't being left-handed totally amazing???
Hi Roderick, I'm so glad you found the videos helpful! Yes, teaching a lefty to knit as a right-handed person is hard. What has worked for me when learning from a righty is to sit next to them in front of a mirror and then I copy their movements while looking at the mirror. Best wishes on your knitting journey! 😀
Yes! A tutorial for lefties! I'd like to see more of these - or even just more Continental tutorials (at least with those, I can do the "mentally mirror-image this" which I often have to do as a lefty). I've been looking on RUclips today for Continental knitting tutorials, and all of them are just beginners ones: knit stitch, purl stitch, cast on, cast off, and that's it. I'd like to see tutorials that go beyond just the basics. Please.

I got the casting on, got the first line of knit (I think?) but as a super beginner it is sooo hard to understand the process of the pearling!!! Thanks for making a left handed video, I tried watching sooo many tutorials before I realised my hand orientation was the problem!
Hi Mallory, Keep practicing just casting on and then doing the knit stitch for a while - like knit an entire scarf or two. The more you understand the knit stitch, it will make learning the purl stitch so much easier. I'm so glad to hear you got your hand orientation worked out.
Hi Kay, You're welcome! I'm so happy to hear the video helped - now you'll be knitting up a storm! 😀
Thank you so so much. I have been knitting since I was four years old. My Grandmother and Mother taught me to knit via the throw method right handed. I tried your right handed continental video and purling was a nightmare. This video is a game changer for me! Flipping the needles was all I had to do! Lefties unite!
Wonderful! I'm so glad it worked for you! 😀
Thank you!! First time knitting, I'm a leftie. This video was phenomenal. I do crochet and I feel like that background does help with understanding tension and things, so that's a bonus. Thanks!
Hi Melissa, I'm so happy you found the video helpful. Being a crocheter first, knitting this way is like you are crocheting with two needles. 😀
OMG, you made my day! Your lefty learning challenge is so similar to mine...I'm happy to hear it all makes sense now. You can knit anything! 😀
Thank you SO MUCH! I bought yarn and needles yesterday in a whim and I already began knitting a plain scarf. It is so well explained and being lefty it is so har to find tutorials for left handed people. Thanks again! :*

thank you so much. You are clear and easy to understand.
Thank you so much, Patricia! 😍
Yay! I'm so glad you are going to give it a try - Let me know how it goes and if you have any other "lefty" knitting questions. 😀
Thank you!

Finally a tutorial for lefties I have been looking for these and I finally found it could you do more of these and you have been such an inspiration 😄
Hi Grace, I'm so happy you found it helpful! What other lefty videos would you like to see?
@@nobleknits I'd love to see how to interpret a sweater pattern for lefties. Thank you for your tutorials!

For those seeing this, checkout the "Video Flipper" extension for Chrome. It puts an icon at the bottom of the video near the gear. Click it and POOF, the video is flipped like in a mirror. You have to ignore the people talking and watch what they are doing.... but now ALL videos can be left handed!!! Warning, it is mirrored, so text is also flipped. Oh well.
@@seanperry3667 Thanks for letting us know 😀
Since covid-19 started, and schools stopped , I decided next time I come out of my house it would be with a few new skills. So I put a few things on my list like crochet, knitting, embroidery, and drawing styles that are different from my usuals. when it came to crochet and knitting I struggled so much with all the right handed tutorials, but finally I was able to find the correct vids! So thank you so much! I just started and my work is really messy but I'm getting the hang of it 💜

This is the best video out there for lefties looking to get started. Thank you so much!
Hi Mary, Thank you for your kind words! I'm so happy to hear you found it helpful. 😀
Oh my! Well, your knitting is about to get a lot easier! 😀You may also want to check out my Lefty 30-Day Growth Course: www.nobleknitsu.com/courses/lefty-30-days-to-become-a-better-knitter
Hi D, I'm so happy it all makes sense now! Happy crocheting AND knitting! 😀
Thank you so much...is the first time ever I see someone teaching slowly and smoothly..God bless you..I have hope I'll do much better & easy in my learning experience.

thank you so much for the video! I'm left handed and I crochet and I always found so unconfortable to knit because all the work we had to do with both hands, this continental style is amazing and it's so much like crochet! I think i can finally start to learn knitting efficiently
Thank you SO much for this video! I crochet, and once you showed continental style, I understand right away!
Thank you thank you thank you thank you! ❤ My mom was right handed and she tried to teach me to knit. I didn't realize I was actually a lefty until years after she passed. I could never grasp the concept of knitting because of holding the needles and yarn in a right-handed method. This makes it so much easier!
Thanks NobleKnits!! Got so sick of struggling right handed. Great tutorial, easy to follow!
Yay! I'm so happy it helped you! 😀
After doing left hand crochet for the past 13 years (i am 25), i finally am learning how to knit left handed. Thank you so much for this video
Hi Heather, I hope this helps with your tension! Keep me posted on your progress 😀
@@nobleknits it absolutely helped and I can now knit as fast as I could before. About a stitch a second.
@@Yaya3.7 That's awesome! 🥳
You are a Godsend!
I'm just a kid and I just stared to learn how to knit a few days ago as a beginner and I find it fun! oh I'm also left handed so this is easier for me
Hi Stormdragon, I'm glad to hear you are learning to knit! Let me know if you have any questions about lefty knitting 😀
You have the easiest tutorial ever! Thank you! I was about to give up
OMG! You have saved me so much frustration, and in a way that is so simple to understand! Thank you so much!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! Finally... I can actually knit and purl. Finally!!! And my fingers don't feel like they're fumbling about to get things in the right place. Golly: game changer indeed. My great thanks :)

Thank you so much for this amazing video. Tried out knitting and it made no sense for me. Until I came across your video and I understood why I didn’t understand being left-handed! I have recently started knitting, not being very successful at it but at least I know how to do it! Time will tell! I do most things with my right hand except writing and knitting. Thank you for this video and I’m looking forward to this new journey! Greetings from Sweden, Kristian
Hi Kristian, I'm so happy you found the video helpful. Please keep me posted on your knitting progress! 😀
I would like for you to move a little slower. I am having a very hard time keeping up. Cast on is easy. But the knitting part is killing
Hi Diandra, I'll try to slow down for other videos. Hopefully, you can rewind and review so you get the hang of it.
I can’t get it 😕 I can get yarn on the first needle but I can’t seem to not knot it up and make a mess when actually knitting it. Help me
@@diandrabeggs4394 Give the yarn a little slack and let give it some room so it won't get tangled. So when you go to knit the first and all consecutive rows, trim the tail to about 6" so it's not in the way and give the yarn on the skein a little slack so that it is not able to get tangled.
you can slow the playback speed of the video! tap the video and in the right corner are three dots. tap them then tap playback speed! awesome!
It’s impossible to rewind when you have two hands full of knitting stuff. Ugh. Hoping to find another video that does it slowly.
Thank you for this! This is huge for me. When I was learning how to knit, both my Mom and Grandma couldn't figure out how to teach me. Over time, I taught myself an interesting combination of right and left hand knitting. This worked out fine until I tried to knit socks. This is what brought me here. Perhaps there is a video on translating patterns to the left hand. I am also dyslexic.....
Amazing video!! Really helped me and the instructions were very clear so thank you 🙏

I cannot thank you enough, as a lefty I have never understood knitting. Please keep up the good work!
Hi Renee, your comment made my day! Let me know if there are other any specific lefty techniques you need to see!
Thanks for your channel!!! It's hard to learn things when you're a leftie!!!! 😊
Keep up the good work
Thank you so much! My grandma and I really wanted to learn how to knit but never could get it to work!
PERfect! I have injured right arm/shoulder/wrist - in midst of a 5-sweater Xmas project . . . THANK YOU!!!!

Thank you - complete beginner and this has really helped
You're welcome and thank you for sharing your knitting story! 😀
Thank you so much I never thought to knit left handed. As I crochet right handed I never thought to try left handed to avoid all the frustration that makes it hard for me to enjoy knitting. Yes I use both hands for most things. Just not crocheting lol
Hi Suzi, Let me know how it goes! When I made the switch from right-handed to left-handed it changed my knitting and crocheting life! 😀

very helfpul
i needed this for school because we are knitting
and i am left handed
Hi Maria, I'm so glad I could help with your schoolwork! Keep me posted on your progress! 😀
Please.
Hi Kerr, thanks for letting me know - we'll work on more lefty videos!

Omg, no, I don’t get this! You telling me i taught myself to knit right handed???? Love how you casted on. Keeping doing that for sure. Now this lefty is going to have to find a right handed tutorial 😮
Let me know if you need any other lefty videos. 😀
