I’m 20. Diagnosed with severe depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Some random night I decided to try knitting. This tutorial got me started on something that would eventually genuinely help my mental health for the last year and a half. It’s calming for when I’m feeling anxious. Gives me something else to think about when I’m feeling depressed, and helps me become focused all at the same time. Thanks for the good tutorial
I’ve started crocheting for the same reason! I have all of the things you’ve mentioned, as well as bipolar. Yarn crafts are really helping me so far, too! Incredibly soothing. ☺️ Cheers for finding positive hobbies. 🥳
I’m 11, nearly 12, but my nana recently passed away and I’d forgotten how to knit (she had taught me before) but I wanted to finish a blanket that she’d started! This video was really helpful, thank you! Edit: Thank you so much for the nice comments!
i don't know why but your video is the only beginning knitting tutorial that has clicked with my head enough for me to make multiple rows. definitely will be tuning into your channel for more help!
This video smacked me right in the face. I loom knit and I know how to crochet. I wasn't even interested in learning how to knit. I don't even know how I got here. Now I can knit too! Ok ok I wont be making a sweater any time soon, but I got the hang of it right away.

My grandma only has a couple years left with me. She has always wanted to teach me how to knit, but she lives far away I want to learn how to knit. So I can give her something before she passes. She’s knitted hats, mittens and blankets for me and my siblings and I can tell knitting just means a lot to her. She had to quit because her fingers are too stiff. Thank you for making this video it means so much to me ❤
Thank you for teaching me to knit at almost 50. I showed my 80 year old mum my new skill and she and I sat together and knitted. She taught me how to cast off. It was the most special moment and I will treasure it forever. Thank you for sharing your video with the world. You think it’s “just” showing someone how to knit but you’ve given me a tool to save money, create warmth through clothing, be creative and build relationships. I am so grateful I found this video :) Thanks from Australia 🇦🇺
I just happened to read your message. So heartfelt and kind you are. I learned how to knit here also. I met another gentleman here that taught me how to loom knit. Try it and you will get hooked. Have fun whichever way you knit/1
I am 25, and not the dude that you may expect to knit. I was looking for a hobby that didn't involve staring at a screen. 1 week after your video, i have completed my first project! It has the charm of a beginners project, but i owe it to you and your videos! Thank you so much!
I recommend trying crochet as well :) it's really easy and fun to learn, and there are so many patterns on RUclips to make the cutest things. I started with that and am now trying knitting.
I bought so many books and ended up in tears. Then I saw your video and you made it look so easy. I got it with the first try!!! Thank you so much. I am so very grateful🥰
Thank you so much for this video! I used this to get me started when my best friend went in for surgery to remove a brain tumor. I continued to knit the entire time and the next day while he was in ICU. I’ll continue knitting now because it gives me peace and a way to create something for people I care about. ❤
When he says “and know we’re going to start knitting” it was like a he beginning of 2020 , it seems all fun and new and then it slowly just falls apart
Why’s everyone in the comments like “oh thanks I can do it now” “I’m a pro knitter now” AND IM SAT HERE CRYING MY EYES OUT WITH A NOTTED UP PEICE OF WOOL
As someone who has always done crochet, knitting always seemed intimidating to me. Trying to handle two needles plus the yarn sounded complicated. But this video was so great and easy to follow. And now I’ve got a little swatch I was able to do, with only one small gap in it 😅 lol! Can’t wait to watch your other videos and learn more! 😃 thank you!!
i crochet, im just now learning how to knit, currently knitting along right now, i hate this. i hate knitting right now but i'm sure i'll get better. i about cried because of how difficult this crap is.
It’s not only the way to teach (amazing) but your voice is so relaxing and let me concentrate. I have ADHD and I’m dealing with a lot of stress and anxiety right now. I decided to look on RUclips instead of buying a book for me to learn because my ADHD and I thought that was going to make it more difficult but thanks to you I’m even more excited to start! ✨

Harneev D Some man corrected me for grammar on a reply for this video, it's polite to listen, so... On the second last word of the last line, add an apostrophe and an "e". It should be "You're welcome."
You've helped me to knit a scarf for my nan for Christmas this year, and I'm only 10 years old. By you, I actually mean, you. No other videos were used to knit it, just a tiny bit of help from a website to help me finish it. This video is absolutely brilliant, so are all of the others that you have made. Thank you so much! Plus, I'm left-handed but your tutorial encouraged me to try doing something with my right hand for once, because I don't do anything else with my right hand other than hold a book up or something like that.
Malaysia Calvin Thank you ever so much. I had never imagined this much support and praise from others, let alone those older than me. Also, I have recently taken some depression tests, I know that they are not proffessional diagnosises, but they all came out with a moderate to severe depression. This much support really helps, especially as it shows that there are those who would notice and do something if I did leave this all behind.
Kaitlyn Marie wow you’re only 10? Your grammar is great! I can tell you’re a very smart person, also I have anxiety and hearing that you have depression is upsetting and I know saying “I hope you feel better” won’t help but hang in there🥺
Hey. I am from India. I am pregnant and doctor advised me complete bed rest. Bed rest is very boring. So one day I randomly came across this tutorial. I found your tutorial extremely interesting. So, I immediately ordered yarn and needles. Now i am trying to knit a sweater for my baby. Thankyou so much for making knitting so easy. I am sure your hardwork will definitely pay off some day👍
I'm a 70 year old guy and yours is the first knitting video I stumbled on. Your direction and demonstration are clear and I'm inspired to try it. Thank you!
You are an AMAZING educator. Every single “huh?” That came up in my head you immediately debunked seconds later. You also seem very patient for beginner confusion! Definitely a perfect teacher for this skill
So who was the first person who looked at a ball of yarn and said, 'I can use this to make clothing using two big needles and loops." Genius or mad person, no doubt.
i think about this legit every time i crochet or knit. like who had a bunch of string and was just like 'yes i know of a good way to weave this to make a shirt' wtf did they just mess around with it until they found it?? or did they stare at it for awhile until the thought was beamed into their mind??
There is a reason this is the most popular Beginners Knitting Tutorial on RUclips. Trust me, this is the best one. I have watched probably 5-6 other tutorials, messed up along the way, got frustrated, wondered why what I was doing wasn't working. NO shade to the other creators, but this video by RJ Knits is simply the easiest most clear to follow. Thank you!
I'm a crocheter. Knitting was as elusive to me as changing a motor in a car. I tried for years to learn. I just couldn't grasp it. I'm now retired with time on my hands. @ 2am I couldn't sleep so i picked up those unused knitting needles & came across your channel. I tell ya RJ...you are the bees knees in tutorials. Thank you thank you thank you. By George I think I've got it. Just to help some others that come across your channel-try bulky yarn. It was much easier for me to see where I went wrong & the pattern was horrible for about the first 50 times with thin yarn. lol. RJ is right, it does get easier. Keep at it. God Bless everyone.
That’s odd since I crocheted for a few months a couple years ago and I found this very easy to pick up. Maybe you had lousy lessons before. Crocheting was too much for my wrists and I’m hoping this isn’t.
It's funny to think this video is where it all started. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your tutorials. In the last 2 years since I first watched it I have knit so many scarfs. This week I even graduated into sweaters. I also got really into crochet, and I've made way more things there. Thank you so much. Knitting has been so important in my life these last 2 years. I went to Uni half a world away from home, and a shared love of knitting is how I made one of my first close friends in the US. I wish you the best, and hope you keep uploading
If you don't mind me asking, which Is easier and faster, knitting or crochet? Cause I want to get into both but for now I want to start with what's fastest and easiest.
@@Prettypiggyy Personally, I find crochet projects and patterns much more intuitive. There is the additional benefit of free patterns being easier to find on RUclips, and the hooks are cheaper by a lot. There are also a lot more start up costs to knitting. Knitting projects will require different needle types (flat, round, double pointed) which are all more expensive. But crochet is generally better for structured items like corsets, bags, dolls, toys, etc... whereas knitting is better for flexible garments.
I've been trying to crochet for 3 months now. Today, I decided that it wasn't my thing! I started knitting for the first time EVER by watching this video. Thank you very much!
"Right, so you know that wool stuff we got from those goats? Yeah, if we spin it like we do with rope, we get this stuff called yarn, and if we take two thin sticks and tie it around, and then do some loop hoop scoop fuckery, we get this cool material. Lets wrap our necks with it"
FINALLY!!!! A video I can follow. There are SO many awful beginning knitting videos on RUclips. Your video is easy to follow, in focus, great camera angle, you speak clearly, you go slow, and repeat the stitches. You're an awesome teacher! And how in the heck can this video have ANY thumbs down?! Are you people crazy?
Meaning, I agree that this video is amazing for beginning matters! So easy to follow, the other girl I was trying to watch before I found this one I was so frustrated
Actually there was another that was very helpful to me with the knit stitch, I just couldn’t really get it with anybody else though this video was very helpful too but I didn’t finish it yet.
Like so many others, I came to sing your praises. 2020 was a terrible year for me and it had nothing to do with the pandemic. I went through the worst thing that has ever happened to me - I lost my precious companion Moose 🐶🐾 to cancer. It devastated me and put me into depression. I’ve always had an interest in knitting but never took the time to learn. I decided now was a good time to start to occupy my mind. Your videos were the best ones I found and here I am, over four years later, loving to knit. My husband is trying to learn crochet and can’t find videos as good as yours which made me appreciate you even more. Thank you for sharing this gift with us!
@@ramonagerig3938 I mean, I tried to be taught 8 years ago, it did not work. I'm still on my first project, just using this stitch, and it's going pretty well for me.
When I tell you I have been absolutely MYSTIFIED by knitting for years! I have been a crocheter since I was thirteen, but knitting absolutely looked like witchcraft. THIS cleared most of what I didn't know up! Thank you for this tutorial!
omg i watched this video just to quickly remind myself how to knit again after many years, but i always thought crocheting looked so complicated! i asked my friend how to crochet, and i will exchange with her by teaching her how to knit
Crocheting since 9 years old, Im now 29 trying yet again to learn to knit, but this tutorial is gold I can finally do it! But I still love my crochet above all ❤
64 year old Grandfather here. Decided to learn how to knit. Have been cross stitching for over 30 years, so not new to needle work. Your video has given me the basics in a very clear presentation. Thanks very much!
Ok so i crochet all day every day for a few years my brother in law found me some knitting neddles at a yard sale hes like I got you some knitting stuff cuz I know you like doing that... Bless his heart... Now im trying to use the needles and im so lost lmao it is so different... Imma just crochet and tell him I knitted it lmao
it's interesting bc I find knitting much easier! I think it's that if you tried one first your mind is already used to it and you find the other one harder.
I'm rather good at crochet but can't knit (why I'm here) and my twin sister is rather good at knitting and doesn't know how to crochet. Together we make one grandma. And yes our grandma is a beast at both.
Amazing!! I am a crocheter, and I said I would never learn to knit because I just dont get it. Here I am on my second knitting project! I've watched so many beginner knitting videos that just confuse me. You broke everything down so simply. I love your casting on method. It was the only one that worked for me because the way you hold the yarn felt like crochet almost. Thank you for these videos!
I’m a crocheter and I want to learn how to knit too. There is just some patterns that you can’t make with crocheting that you can with knitting! Knitting is so much more detailed. Hopefully I can get my knitting needles soon!
@@fathi_ma yes! Knitting is done with two needles, whereas crochet is done with one hook. They are achieved using very different motions, and look quite different.
I can crochet but knitting has been so scary for me. But hearing your "knitting is not the end of the world. Its supposed to be just hobby or meditation" is awesome. Thank you
I just taught my daughter, 11, to knit in 15 mins w/this one video! She followed your demo easily & continued to knit a 20x20 with only a few errors! Thanks!!!
Man, was looking for something "theraputic" to do since suddenly at 65 yrs young just starting to have some significant health issues. Used to knit as a youngster, but I couldn't quite get the hang of it. This tutorial is amazing! So calm and patient. My mother would yell and scream if I dropped a stitch. Now, I can learn again. Thank you so much!
As a almost 12 year old girl who is very sporty it feels so good to learn a new hobby that I can just sit around before bed and knit... tysm for teaching people that want to learn how to knit, I especially love how you made each of the steps super clear. Xoxo
as a 15 year old guy that’s been crocheting for 8 years, switching to knitting feels so weird and it’s not a permanent switch im gonna keep crocheting i just wanna know how to do both
I am currently bedridden due to a broken ankle and I finally decided to try knitting (had made an attempt years ago with utter failure) and thanks to your video I have currently finished 50% of a scarf! Many thanks, it’s such a lovely craft!
I am sad to say she knitted me under the table. The rematch will be scheduled next time I see her at the bus stop and run my mouth. (I never get disrespectful with her)
I’ve wanted to start knitting for a while. I’m trying to become that person who tries all the things they say they want to do instead of just talking about it. I’m going to order some needles and yarn. Wish me lucky!
You are the BEST!! I've started back after almost 15 years and have forgotten most everything. You are the only one that is so easy to follow! :) Thank you!
I want to learn how to knit so I can sit in a rocking chair at 3 months pregnant knitting baby shoes, blankets, hats, you name it. Edit: Wholly moley! I did not think my comment would get this many likes and replies. Thank you all so much for your kind words but I am not actually pregnant, I should've clarified on that. I just meant that I want to learn how to knit for when I actually am pregnant because when I was a baby, my grandmother crocheted a blanket for me and I want to learn how to knit because it seems relaxing and fun
I was very frustrated when my mum was trying to teach me, you are amazing, this was so fun to do with you! I feel emotional because I was disheartened, my 8 year old sister could knit somehow but me a 19 year old was bloody struggling her couchie off, so thank you I can't wait to show my mum what I have made, I am so proud of myself! Thank you thank you! The zoom of the video is great and the instructions and explinations you give are easy to follow! You are apart of the knitting my first whatever this will become maybe a rectangle!
I just wanted to say thank you for ACTUALLY explaining things and not labeling at a tutorial and just knit away. You’re literally the best teacher for knitting 🧶 ❤️
DUDE. I have been “learning” to knit for over a year. I am BLOWN away by how much easier this video is to follow. I always have to look up how to cast on and I’ve never seen it done this way. Game changer! This is so simple and so much easier. Thank you so much!
Ive been crocheting for years and this is the first video that gives me the courage to try knitting! thank you for going slow and really understanding how challenging it can be to get started!
Im a lifelong crocheter no one has ever been able to teach me to knit, I’ve watched you’re video once and was able to knit my first stitches . Thank you !
Thank you for posting this. My mom died a week ago, and I took her knitting needles to learn how to knit with. This video helps a lot! I keep ending up with more than 18 loops on my hook around the 3rd row, so I’m practicing until it’s perfect.
Ok, this is officially the best knitting video that I have seen. It really helped me. I finally made it past the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th row!!! The only thing is no one tells you that the yarn goes back and forth between the two needles. That kept making me think that I was doing something wrong. So far its turning out very well. Thank you for the video.
Melissa H Totally agreed the best knitting video ever! This guy is amazing! I watched another girl for like four days straight and still couldn’t get it and was about to give up… Thank God for this guy
@@danoonzpeterson2910 I just did, she spoke like talking to children & even so I didn't get behond the 1st tie, but this guy really.makes it easy to do, what a tutor!?✌🏻
I have ADHD and anxiety and I have a lot of trouble learning new things and following along to instructions, this was so clear and easy to follow! I also didn’t have to go back and rewatch anything for the entire vid, which doesn’t sound like much but is actually massive for me, so thank you heaps! 💚
I just started my knitting and your tutorial is the first one I saw ✨️✨️ it's so easy to follow and I already feel like a professional !!!! Thank you so so much for posting this 👏🏾😭✨️
Thank you for the vid, always wanted to know how to knit and this really is a blessing as my grandma wouldn't tell me, she is stereotypical and says boys should not be knitting. I know, sexist. The exploration is very clear and this is basically what I needed in a single vid. Now just to steal her yarn...
Sometimes men are the best knitters, cooks and seamstress’ Most times when you need a suit tailored it’s a man doing it. It doesn’t matter male or female. What matters is you want to learn, it helps you relax and you’ll be very proud of items you made. Kick ass and keep learning everything you can. It makes you a more open minded and understanding person💕
I learned how to crohet a year ago and I wanted to learn how to knit,I tried multiple different videos and books and this video helped me so much.Thank you
I ran out of melatonin and I physically cannot sleep without it. So now I'm learning how to knit. Wish my sanity good luck when I have to get up in 3 hours.
Wow, finally someone who explained it the easy way. After going through instruction after instruction and failing, finally I have knitted my first five rows. 😊 Thank you so much!
I'm a lefty and the right-hand method works just fine! I started knitting last week and I'm already addicted. It becomes almost meditative and has significantly reduced my anxiety. When I get into a good rhythm, I call it "flow state" - relaxed, calm, and just focused on knitting. Thank you for making your videos! 🙏🏻
This was genuinely so helpful, you go at a pace that actually allows learning, and I've already been able to adapt to a better way of holding it for my arthritis. My stitches are stull uneven, but I'm sure with practice and time it'll be perfect, thank you!
I’m left handed, in my ‘later’ years, and finally trying to tackle knitting. (I do sew.) Listened to this video, understood it clearly but still struggled. Watched a video for left handed people. Got the gist but came back to this one to really let it hit home. This video is so thorough and very clear on how to knit. Thank you! ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I've been trying to learn how to knit for a few years now and these are the only instructions that have ever made sense to me in all of my searching. I can crochet, tunisian crochet, handsew, tat, and do lots of other things, but knitting has always been the one thing I've struggled to learn. I'm proud to say that this video is the only one that hasn't made me feel like pulling my hair out because of frustration. Thank you so much for this video and I am going to follow your channel from now on to learn more.
this is so fun! i'm doing it with pencils :) been teaching myself how to crochet and figured i'd try knitting too. this is an extremely helpful tutorial. thank you!
Your video was one of the best instructional videos I've seen. You went slowly, filmed CLOSE UP! and repeated it over +over. You're a born teacher. This is a lot less fattening than baking bread during these shut down days. Thank you for a quality lesson.
Here I am, 5 months pregnant 🤰🏻learning to knit for my baby boy due to arrive in 4 months 🥰 my goal is a baby blanket and maybe some booties and a hat. Ordered my wool and needles today. So excited for it to arrive. Thank you for your clear instructions-so precise and clearly explained.
I'm glad everyone else found this helpful. My perfectionist self is still struggling. I've always struggled doing things with my hands. I'm ending tonight frustrated and with nothing but will hopefully get the courage to come back and try again tomorrow.
I’m also feeling frustrated. Not by the video, this man has given very clear instructions. I’m just struggling to use my hands the right way. I’ve mastered crochet, but knitting is so hard to me.
My grandmother used to learn me how to knit when I was younger, she passed away long time ago and I remembered some of the steps but you helped me remember how to do it all together. Thank you!!
I’ve watched many knitting videos in the past two days. I must say your cast on is more understandable then those other videos that I’ve watched.!I have been crocheting for 24 years. I’m wanting to learn something new. Bought new needles and yarn cakes for the bag I plan on making. 💜
I have tried crocheting since my mother wanted to teach me…..about 55 years!! I’ve been knitting on an Addi circular machine, but thought I’d give hand knitting a go. It feels so much more natural to me than crocheting!! Thank you for your very clear and concise instructions! I’ll be watching your other videos once I get this technique down!
I literally have been wanting to learn how to knit since I was a child (I was... "special" - as my mom would put it), but it always seemed just way too complicated. I just went to the store on a whim and bought some needles and cute pastel coloured yarn and looked up a tutorial and now I have my first two knited rows in front of me at the age of 29, thank you, you're a great teacher!!
I'm 12 years old, 2 years ago I asked my nana to teach me how to knit, I never really was able to remember how to do it. But today I randomly decided I was gonna make my Nana a scarf for mothers day. So thank you!
Thank you for such a great video to learn from. I was only taught how to crochet by my mommom. As far as I remember, she didn't knit. I started learning about 3 years ago but didn't keep up with it. I'm now starting again. Thankfully, I still had all the knitting needles I had previously bought.

Plus, I'm left-handed but your tutorial encouraged me to try doing something with my right hand for once, because I don't do anything else with my right hand other than hold a book up or something like that.
awww what a sweet message :):)

I'm so glad you finally got it! God bless you!
Finally, someone showed me how to cast on easier!! I’m 68, been knitting since I am 11. Casting on a goofy way, til now. Thanks!!!!

Girl you have the same google icon picture like me 😂
If you don't mind me asking, which Is easier and faster, knitting or crochet? Cause I want to get into both but for now I want to start with what's fastest and easiest.
@@Prettypiggyy Personally, I find crochet projects and patterns much more intuitive. There is the additional benefit of free patterns being easier to find on RUclips, and the hooks are cheaper by a lot. There are also a lot more start up costs to knitting. Knitting projects will require different needle types (flat, round, double pointed) which are all more expensive. But crochet is generally better for structured items like corsets, bags, dolls, toys, etc... whereas knitting is better for flexible garments.
crochet 💯
@@leelahasan3988 : Very informative comparison, thank you kindly!

I haven't knit in years and decided I wanted to again after those years spent crocheting! I needed this refresh! Thank you!
I am 65 years old and a lifelong crocheter. I was always intimidated by knitting. This video is great. Running out to buy knitting needles. Thank you!
I’ve started back knitting 🧶
What are some highlight projects you’ve done crocheting? i’m a novice and i’d love to hear some cool things!
I'm 27 and I started with crochet! It's so much easier for me! I'm trying to start knitting, but man it is hard to control both needles lol
My life ended when he said "Time for the real knitting"☠️

Thank you for such a great video to learn from. I was only taught how to crochet by my mommom. As far as I remember, she didn't knit. I started learning about 3 years ago but didn't keep up with it. I'm now starting again. Thankfully, I still had all the knitting needles I had previously bought.
