Earlier in the movie, you hear Michael Caine's character describe Angier and Borden as "magicians", but he refers to Tesla as an actual "wizard".
when you see REAL magic it changes you
Well that guy invented duplication. An actual magic
I love that line too. he can really do what magicians only pretend to do.
Another nice little detail; Tesla backhand compliments Angier by saying his assistant has praised his "act."
David Bowie wasn't only a genius singer, songwriter, composer, and performer.
He was also a great actor
He’s the only singer who I think was a great actor, I roll my eyes seeing singers act but it was a joy seeing him either as Jareth, Nikola Tesla or Thomas Newton
@@ytuser_3122 what about Meat Loaf?
@@therealmcbong8446 His name is Robert Paulson.
Yeah, I liked him in ***** ****
Only a few artists can hold such multiple talents.
David Bowie as Tesla was “Perfect. PERFECT. Everything. Down to the last minute detail.”
Which is why Nolan said he wouldn't know what to do if Bowie didn't accept the role. He said he basically had to beg him to do it after he originally turned down the role.
@@Koinoyokan01 And finally Bowie laughed and said he'd do it :)
"Nothing is impossible, Mr. Angier. What you want is simply expensive."
Ain't that the truth. Especially these days, and I mean what we have realized is coming over the last two months. (March-May 2023.) We are on the verge of being able to do pretty much anything. Now it's all about who has the most $$$.
@@Koinoyokan01I wonder if Nolan wanted to work with him again or was happy to work with him at all
David Bowie was awesome as Tesla. Prestige is one of the coolest films ever. Should be a film on sociology of the times. Being that Tela was trying to ascend the world. Edison was trying to sell it out. "Dont forget your hat".
David Bowie is the definitive Nikola Tesla as Robert Downey Jr is the definitive Iron Man! I don’t care what anyone says, David Bowie was amazing as this under appreciated and incredible scientist!
"Which one is mine?"
@@uscman Watch it again. “Alley” was the real Tesla hiding in plain sight. If everyone knew who he was and what he looked like, it would have made him a bigger target. So who would go after an assistant?
Tesla is noted for having a “black cat” as well. Notice how defensive Alley becomes when David Bowie is about to conduct the experiment.
Only a person with a mystical spirit could played Tesla as David did, because Only a genius understands another. 🙌
Edison, "The Man Who sold the World".
Tesla knew that Angier was the villain in all this. He tried to warn him what such an obsession could do to a man. It’s like he could read his mind.
The movie changed him in to a villain. In the beginning Christian Bale was the villain. Roles switched.
RIP Nikola Tesla (July 10, 1856 - January 7, 1943), aged 86
And
RIP David Bowie (January 8, 1947 - January 10, 2016), aged 69
You both will be remembered as legends.
Hang on. Tesla died four years before Bowie was born?? Reincarnation possible?
I wish Bowie had gotten 17 more years like Tesla. A lot of rock musicians are determined to play to their end these days, still going in their 70s-80s. And still good.
@@Legba85 Nah he wouldn't have been an actor! He would have become a scientist again!
Nice
Got to meet Bowie several times. He was a nice and funny guy. He talked to everyone like a friend.
You are one of the lucky people on this earth to have met him! Wish I met him in the 16 years we spent existing together 😔
@@uscman I'll tell you this: Bowie remembered names even if he met you once. He came up behind me one day and called out, "How ya doing today, John?" He was a friendly dude.
To paraphrase Mark Twain, "the really great make you feel that you too are great".
@@mikemendez9006 amazing
You met Bowie? I met Tesla, coolest guy ever. How awesome is that?
FUN FACT: The electricity that David Bowie walked through was not a special effect. He just naturally produced it everywhere he walked, so Christopher Nolan had to use special technology to edit it out in every shot. That is why he's only in the movie for about 10 minutes, it was too expensive.
Its true!
Just like how Nolan himself detonated a real nuke for Oppenheimer. He even had several dozen people killed in the blast for extra realism, and hundreds more died of radiation poisoning! He's committed to his craft!
@@squamish4244 Lmao 🤣🤣🤣
Really? Thats amazing they must of run out of money
Even the kitties later seem to be playing around tons of hats, those kitties had electricity flowing all around, it was from them.
Had to edit it all out.
(Imagine Dragon's Thunder plays)

0:39 Now THAT is a Bowie entrance
I like the double meaning when tesla says: “i add only one suggestion for using the machine- destroy it, drop it to the deepest ocean. Such a thing will bring you only misery.” “It” here can refer to either the machine or his clone. Nice foreshadowing to the theme of drowning later, and tie to fighting twins and the cat immediately fighting itself.
Just watched Oppenheimer, now Tesla's words mean a lot more
Even "exact science is never exact". They tried this thing, that thing, the other thing, before they finally got it to work.
It actually crossed my mind when I first watched Oppenheimer as well. "Society only tolerates one change at a time." "Man's grasp exceeds his nerve."
Oppenheimer changed the world in a way where most of us are still not sure if it will lead to our ultimate doom. Nuclear weapons called for the creation of more and more powerful computers to better predict nuclear behavior and blast radii. More computers resulted in the ability to calculate things faster, which resulted in an acceleration in scientific research and automated production. And increase in these resulted in more breakthroughs and inventions.
Tesla, Turing and Oppenheimer basically created the engineering apparatus for everything that would come during and after the 20th Century.
@@r.b.ratieta6111 Engineers. They don't get nearly enough love (or fame), but they turn what scientists discover into something useful.
David Bowie did such a remarkable presentation of Nikola Tesla
2:12 - "Price is not an object." -- Unfortunately I believe that even if he knew the ultimate "cost" of the machine (his life), I think he still would have gone through with it.
Well, he did know, and he did go through with it. That's literally what happens in the movie...
@@aeixo2533 It's just too bad that the machine never worked.
I watched this for the first time last night and I loved it Bowie was especially good as Nikola Tesla and the rivalry between Jackman and bale
I just realized today that this guy was Bowie, wtf
No.... Andy was Tesla.....not Bowie.....Andy clearly says that's his cat...Tesla had a black cat. This is the misdirection Michael Cane assistants provide when spoke to Bale and Jackman about in the beginning in of the film. He is also the one who demonstrated the machine. Also he mentions in the video he was operating the machine....not Bowie
@@Yousaf_Yunes what? Can you explain at all what you just wrote?
Whenever Tesla or his creations are shown on the screen there’s a sound illusion that’s played. The “Shepard Tone” (im pretty sure you’ve seen that video if you’re a Nolan fan) is the illusion that something sounds like it’s rising for infinite.
I frickin LOVE when that noise plays whenever Tesla is shown or his creation goes on screen.
Tesla’s entrance is probably the coolest entrance in a (mostly) grounded/realistic movie I’ve ever seen
"destroy it" - love that line
The entrance of tesla is so dope and stunning
0:40-0:44......My God, that was something!! 👏👏👏💪💪💪. The best appierence of the caracter in history of cinema!
This just makes me upset we didn't get a Nikola Tesla science fiction film instead, David Bowe came in with such presence & mysteriousness that had him stealing scenes. Like how could i give a damn about some magic trick when Tesla is showing how real magic is just science we don't understand, could made a great film. Another one of Nolan's surprise castings that turned out to be a gift i didn't know i needed.
The compilation cut a scene off too early that is the most important Tesla moment! After Angier's hat doesn't move, the scene cuts back to Tesla, who just stands there, looking at the hat, oblivious to Angier's presence. It's effective in portraying the wheels turning in a great mind.
It's also literally the key plot moment of the entire film, because it reveals everything Angier does next, including his slide into madness. Grrrr
Yes! THAT'S the moment I've been looking for. It's one of the great 2sec of the movie and here they cut it!
@@steverlord It literally hints towards the key plot moment of the entire movie, and they cut it lol
I love these scenes with Tesla, Bowie did such a good job and Tesla is such an interesting person.
Bowie is flawless as Tesla.
"Man's grasp exceeds his nerve." Maybe that's for the best.
Bowie absolutely CRUSHED this role!! He is a hero in the bi community.
He was absolutely fantastic here.
Seeing the body conducting electricity must've been epic for the first time
Such a great film and atmosphere. I feel like this was Nolan at his best. Before becoming too much obsessed with grandiose
Nikola Tesla was the true Master. David Bowie was A lord. Both are sorely missed. Rest in piece my lords.
7:01 “Don’t forget your hat.”
“Which one’s mine?”
“They’re all your hats.”
This exchange I feel highlights a part of what’s great about this film, that mysticism along with science and magicians illusions truly creates a mysterious magical atmosphere in the film
It also foreshadows Angier's unwillingness to accept a duplicate of himself. He drowns every new duplicate of himself rather than letting both live.
@@mikespearwood3914 Well remember Angier mentioned that he never knew whether he would be the man on stage or the man in the box at the end of each trick, so the original Angier is long dead by now but the identical copies keep going
@@snusemcgoose1001 Exactly. It shows he just can't cope having a clone survive and share the limelight with him, like the Borden twins do. The ultimate irony was he didn't need to keep murdering his clones (except as an elaborate way to hopefully frame Borden one day for murder, which was ultimately successful and nabbed Fred, who was found guilty and hanged) and could've done it all with the original clone (the one he shot).
6:28 I remembered this scene I was like: "no waaaay it doesn't teleport it clones"
This video was edited very well. The scenes are cut together so seamlessly that it plays like a short film in itself. Good job.
Tesla's actor had great charisma! Well he's David Bowie.
Bowie’s best role ever. RIP
Don't know, he'll always be the goblin king ;)
@@jhfdhgvnbjm75his male camel toe as a kid used to weird me out but now at 41 after living openly bisexual most of my life I find him a hero.
David Bowie should have more roles acting. He’s great
You can watch The Man Who Fell to Earth, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, The Hunger, The Last Temptation of Christ and Labyrinth.
He's dead,lol.

@@juniwilliams David Bowie didn't die, dude, he ascended.
He was a really damn good actor, and this is coming from someone who hates seeing singers act
David Bowie was a very fine actor. RIP
Bowie sounds like Pierce Brosnans real speaking voice
I like how they played the Rivalry between Edison and Tesla, making Edison seem like a villain.
"Seem"? He was a villain!
That's because he was. In every way. He was an awful man.
Because, he was.
@@tmmartinesq.6216 Wrong
@tmmartinesq.6216 indeed, Thomas was an evil man corrupted by his greed and desire to dominate.
Amazing, underrated movie.
"they're all your hats Mr Anger"
0:39. You can't deny that's one hell of an entrance! Only Bowie could make that look awesome...
I think its my favorite casting for a movie, ever!
Only one missing to make it perfect is Daniel D. Lewis
What a fine actor Bowie was, he should have done more.
"I'm not a filmstar"
-Bowie
His entrance 💯💯
**Sméagol always finds himself next to power people.
It wasn't until the credits that I realised that the white duke played Tesla
Brilliant performance
Teslas the greatest scientist of all times
Only for people who don't understand science
For me, the pacing is what makes the impossible seem probable.
In this "what if" story Tesla essentially created a duplicating/teleportation device. In my mind, it reminds me of how the copy machine or the fax machine would be revered if it was invented a hundred years before their time.
Miracles always lose their magic luster once they can be scientifically explained.
The horror of the situation is that when you have been duplicated both bodies and minds are exactly alike. So even if you "know" the one standing in the machine is "the real" you, you would also feel the perspective and memories of the one fifty feet away. You would be experiencing the world around you from two perspectives at once, but each one believing itself to be the original. Creepy. Reminds me of that season of Farscape.
There's nothing wrong if the universe allows it, then it's only a part of physic. It's the human mind too weak to see another side of the universe.
David Bowie as nikola Tesla….how prestigious
The best Nikola Tesla ever was David Bowie love it!!
David bowie and Andy Serkis both played there characters like there other worldly beings I remember the first time I saw this movie both of these characters were just so unnerving and creepy
"they are ALL your hats"!
Edison is trying to destroy his double, Tesla. I just realized that! Just like the cat, fighting with its double. Just like Angiers, fighting with Borden, killing his own duplicates. People ultimately do not like interacting with themselves, don't like that a perfect duplicate of themselves may exist.
Jaja, i remembered being in the first grade of elementary school, and hate on a guy with the same name as me 😂
@@darksider-dp1xo Yep! Think North and South Korea, think Prussia and Austria going to war, Russia and Ukraine, etc. It seems the more similar folks are, the more likely they'll go to war sometime .... sometimes it's the other way around though.

damn good actor
The idea of a singer, despite how talented they are or how much love I have for their music, I always wonder if that singer can actually act or thinks they can solely for being famous. Unless they play themselves like Bowie in Zoolander or The Beatles in A Hard Day’s Night and Help!, I always think this for all singers like Lady Gaga in A Star Is Born, and even David Bowie. But he was a really good actor. Especially as the greatest scientist of all time.
Bowie was awesome as Tesla
That's it, we'll sell hats from now on! 🎩
Tesla the underrated genius and the man who changed the world….
It was interesting with Oppenheimer seeing Einstein give a lecture/warning just as Tesla did to Angier…
David Bowie played Tesla?! I was sure it is Pierce Brosnan :D Anyone else?
Tesla sounds exactly like Sam Neil in The Hunt For Red October.
His ultimate desire has been delivered straight to him.
The creator has given him instruction to use it.
And the creator has given his advice to dispose of it.
Why do we hurt ourselves to self annihilation; when given choice and our last chance?
I love David Bowie, we share the same zodiac sign. I did not know this movie existed until today. I need to find the full movie.
We MISS YOU, David Bowie! - SO Much! :-)
Awesome!
I've just realised a link between this movie and Oppenheimer;
Both scientists created something that they regret because it could potentially destroy humanity.
One was a replication gadget that could continue wars until we're all dead, the other is a bomb that could end humanity.
Our bodies are indeed capable of producing, conducting and storing energies.
Little known fact: After Tesla's death, all of his inventions were inspected by an MIT Professor on behalf of the US government. That man's name was John G. Trump, Donald Trump's uncle.
Wow, interesting fact.
Something else, no doubt, that Donald Trump would probably boast about.... if he understood anything to do with Tesla and the science that relates to it
@@TheRedGoldfish He doesn't talk about his uncle. Perhaps there's a reason that hasn't been revealed yet. The man has a lot to boast about. He's a legend... and he'll be President again.
@@TheRedGoldfish Trump is still President, btw. Wait until you find out.

Love the fan theory that Andy serkis was the actual Tesla. Bowie played an actor
I would suggest that this sort of device exists. Today!
0:38 this scene goes hard
This movie is the first time I ever heard of Nikola Tesla
Shame
He wanted to create free energy for everyone but was sabotaged and labeled crazy scientists
This is really sad. He is a pioneer of modern electricity based technology
@@asifrony3201 what's sad is I knew of Thomas Edison
but did not remember being taught anything about Nikola Tesla in school on innovators or scientists
This was 20-25 years ago, my learning years.
Today ppl are aware due to Internet & that Edison copycat Elon Musk hijacking Tesla's name to capitalist inventions.
Tesla was a free thinker and wanted free energy for the ppl. Of course you will not know of such man, except through other ppl's work because they stole his inventions & documents & put a big fat prize tag on it
P.s. western curriculum or at least from country to country, even what to teach may differ from country to country.
Where I live, standards are not high for learning...everything is text book smart, not thinking outside the box smart
Ppl learn or go yo school because thry must...not because they want to, or to develop their minds...
They probably bring up stuff in the classroom but it's so boring no one really cares or remembers
Man, Bowie would've been perfect as Dr fate.
David Bowie is so interesting looking in this movie.
Bowie is perfect for that role. Bravo

he could have made a lot of money duplicating a gold bar one hundred times

@Mr7Reality do you know how many times you'd have to duplicate that gold bar to even make a noticeable dent in the market price of gold?
@@elilogan874 well, duplicate it. Put both on the platform, again, again, again. Exponential growth.

Man, David Bowie was a solid actor.
light bulb for the matrix..humans as batteries, jack in the box
I see an obsession;
Go home, Forget this thing.
No good will come out of it.
Now that's a shocking interpretation from Bowie.
It is funny to consider at 3:40 that Serkis is really Tesla. All flustered, the assistant just standing there; he is excited to show Angier his first prototype, not thinking of the impact if it doesn't work, then is caught off guard due to his excitement and rushes him off to try again; probably promised he could do something he wasn't sure he could do from the start. Less visionary scientist, more actual, working one lol. Serkis has more of that obsessive personality to me, with Bowie coming off as someone meant to portray a mystique for publicity. It also fits the theme that the mystique, as discussed with the Chinese magician, is more important. I have no doubt it would be feasible Tesla uses an actor to portray a visionary to secure funding.
Folks Andy is Telsa: Andy clearly says that's his cat...Tesla had a black cat. This is the misdirection Michael Cane assistants provide when spoke to Bale and Jackman about in the beginning in of the film. He is also the one who demonstrated the machine. This is electric! ;)
💪NIKOLA😉TESLA😎
Nikola Tesla was not a scientist, he was a magician.
thinking like that is how you destroy a man like his legacy
Remember to preserve the upper realm as a first code
The Sound....
I think it was in another video that someone laid out the theory that Tesla and Alley are actually swapped. Alley is the real Tesla and the man presented as Tesla is an actor meant to deflect attention away from "Alley".
This allows Tesla to move about freely without being detected. Alley is the one who shows up at the hotel to talk to Angier, Alley is the one at the conference in town, Alley is the one who comes out to confront Angier when he is shocked by the fence. The genius thing about this is that to the whole world he is Tesla's henchman, he does his bidding like Igor from Frankenstein. The reality though is that he has front row access to everything including his enemies and competition. By acting as a henchman no one really takes him seriously. They see past him to Tesla. He sees and hears everything and no one knows that it's him.
I don't know if I buy into it yet, I have to watch the film again and observe those moments to see if it's true. The other thing is that it's all from Angier's diary and so none of it can be trusted in the first place. This movie will trip you up if you think about it too much.
Creativeness aside I still think Bowie's character was the real Tesla. He seemed more philosophical and called out Angier noticing his obsessive nature and didn't even want him to buy his creation because he knew it would destroy his soul (which it basically did). I don't think a fake genius would say such things to him if he was wanting to buy his invention.
Nolan should’ve done a whole Tesla movie
...while we still had Bowie.
Can't imagine anyone else playing him now.
..
Wireless Electricity 🤯🙄🙄
We need a legendary Nikola Tesla movie, not the ones that are out now, this is the closet we have!
Could of done this with one bar of gold instead of the hats.

Soon as Angier uses the machine for the first time, to this day I don't even know if it was him that was shot to death by the other man....,
*........ or if it was he himself holding the gun.*
"Destroy it, drop it to the bottom of the deepest ocean, such a machine will bring you only misery" - something that nikola tesla would definitely said ☠️☠️☠️
