As much as we all yearn for a sequel to spirited away and keep our fingers crossed for chihiro and haku's promise. No matter how many fanfictions I try to read they don't work. Two years ago after reading one I came to the conclusion that no one could possibly make this stuff up except for Miyazaki-san because of how much of himself he puts into his films. If anyone can make a sequel its him and only him because no one lived his life nor experienced his thoughts. Besides who doesn't love a bittersweet ending? Probably one of the greatest difference between studio ghibli and Disney, Disney can't really pull off the bittersweet. At least as far as my knowledge of them goes.
Sequel is a word probably not found in Miyazaki's vocabulary. When you create masterpiece, a diamond, do you really want to create something behind it that could never be as perfect as the original? There is honor in his works, a certain kind of sancticity. And I understand it. Savor his films, as their uniqueness give it a flavor you cannot taste anywhere else. There's part of their beauty.

Well, you can't compare it, since Ghibli makes something entirely different than Disney. Disney makes beautiful fairy tales, Ghibli makes fairy tales with philosophical theme. They both make great movies, but each studio aims for different viewers.
Japanese audiences use slightly maturer themes, which is the main fundamental difference between the two. Disney love to retain the "innocence" of children (or so they think) so they make these "perfect" worlds for characters to thrive in and there's always a happy ending. Studio Ghibli and other Japanese anime studios use more realistic approaches which draws on parallels from the real world, which is why the world can feel believable despite it being fantasy. Two different connections but both do deliver. The reason some prefer Japanese animations over Disney is because the dialogue doesn't insult the intelligence of it's audience. Where Disney feel they are protecting the innocence of children, the Japanese understand children will always absorb things much quicker and will always search for the answer, especially now more so than ever where kids are becoming even more smarter than their parents at such young ages. This is mostly due to the access of the Internet and consumption of information (regardless to how relevant it is). This is merely the differences between two cultures and what is deemed appropriate for children. Look at Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, it's a kids show with allot of swearing and 'flipping the bird' and pulling down your pants to show your willy or bum to someone you hate. Allot of this got cut in the western version when it aired on Toonami since western audiences would deem that as inappropriate and not safe for kids, but in Japan, it's all humor.
I love studio ghibli and my favorite is Spirited Away even if it's Japanese I can understand it a little bit cause I like to learn Japanese language's and I love anime's ^-^

The scene on the train took my breath away. It's hard to describe the feeling but it's like pitty, nostalgia and thrill. The fact that you never see the train conductors face for time he's on screen leaves our thoughts trying to deal with ambiguity, not knowing if we have to fear this person or not. Is he a threat? Also the transparrent spirits on the train give us a similar feeling but because they don't try to hurt Chihiro we realise the're just day to day civilised people with jobs and homes and gives us the relief that things that look scary, can be heart warming. The music in the background fits perfectly. That's what i love about these films.
As amazing as these stories and animations are, the music is, at least to me, what makes them come to life. All hail Hayao Miyazaki and Joe Hisashi! Quite possibly, the greatest combination of artists with godly talents ever conceived!
I was eight when I first saw this movie, and even then I tried to hold my breath with Chihiro as she crossed the bridge. Even at that young age, when I didn't understand who Miyazaki was or that it was even Japanese, I still fell in love with the film and all it told through its story. As much as I would love to see that promise between Haku and Chihiro made at the end fulfilled, it would ruin the magic that this film is. I'm just lucky that I get to live in a time of Miyazaki films.
Im so happy that I had the chance to watch this movie.. Im 15 and... I fell in love with this movie.. its so amazing and it really captured my heart.. Spirited Away is an AMAZING movie. Even before I saw the making of this movie just now, when I was watching it, I knew there was something special about it. One of the producer dudes described it as putting extra little details in the movie that normal directors would gloss over. I noticed that immediately - subconciously - that he did that. WOW.
"However, when Disney approached us they came with two preconditions. One is that they wanted all of our films, and two is that they would not touch the content and they would not alter the films at all. That there would be no cuts". Too bad that promise didn't include dialogue/music additions...
It's very easy to generalize dubs that way, so I usually give them a fair watch before switching. I've actually heard plenty of great dubs over the recent years. I'm just don't particularly like the way Disney handled some of this. Then again, I can expect it given Disney's standards of movie-making.
ValiantSquirrel True, although you must understand that Disney's real goal was to adapt this story and film for an American audience. Obviously Western culture is far different than Eastern culture and watching a movie so rich in Eastern culture and tradition was very liable to feel off-putting to a Western audience. But Disney was able to make these characters feel so comfortable and the setting so familiar that you almost forget that this is in essence a foreign film. And they did this without cutting the film to pieces!

What I like about the Ghibli/ Miyazaki films that they seem deeper, operate on more adult levels that are so much more sophisticated for kids too. Disney really just seems very kiddish and juvenile, like they are just pandering to a really simplistic and childish level. With Ghibli you get the sense they don’t speak down to kids, and that their children are really smart. This goes for probably more the recent Disney stuff.
When you just finished watching spirited away and searched for "Spirited away 2" to make sure if Haku didn't break promise. I too still hope "Spirited away 2" comes out soon

I grew up watching most of his films alongside disney films, but I had no idea that this film is so popular outside Japan. So great to hear all these complements. He makes us Japanese proud ^^
I wish they would make a Spirited Away 2. Spirited Away 1 was AMAZING!!!! I would have Chihiro remember through the purple hair-tie and then she would have to find Haku again. Either in the real world or in the spirit world. Maybe she will have kids who can go on the adventure with her.
The movie was amazingly done and I know the chances of getting a sequel is a big no go but I want to see chihiro as a teenage girl ending up in the spirit world again by accident. She meets everyone again and maybe even share a kiss with haku. There can even be a new villian (or an old enemy). But we can only dream of a sequel

It's very clear that Miyazaki and Ghibli in general have made Pixar better than they would have been (and we have masterpieces now like Wall-E, UP, toy story 3...), they inspired them a lot, Lasseters hero in animation is the master Hayao himself... Enough said. Spirited away is my favorite animation film ever and top 10 all-time any genre.
I was skeptical at first... but after re-watching the entirety of this documentary, I can say with fair certainty that this Disney crew was NOT "emphasizing their dubbing role above everything else" or "boasting about perfecting the original animated film". Far from it... I thought this crew sounded humble in general, and at least two-thirds of the entire presentation was spent praising Miyazaki and his directing/artistic abilities. Just because a dubbing crew discusses their role and challenges in the dubbing process doesn't necessarily mean it's boasting or over-emphasis of themselves. Most people who contribute to any part of a project like this would want to talk about their experience anyway. But for some it's automatically "mean-spirited" to show pride in one's English dub work to the public. >_> I don't care anymore. They deserve to be proud of this dub. Even IF this documentary wasn't as in-depth about Miyazaki's work as some hoped, it's still a decent introduction to his work for the unfamiliar. Those who want an in-depth (~done to perfection~) Studio Ghibli documentary should, instead of predictably blaming this, check out the film, "The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness". Seriously.
Spirited Away has the highest imdb user rating for any animated film. However that fact alone dosn't do anything to compensate for the fact the computer animation craze was still growing.
Tbh i love the way it is its a perfect story but if only haku and chihiro met again i wouldnt like a part 2 the only reason why i want a part 2 because i want them to meet again..
I think in a way, Miyazaki films can never have a sequel. It would ruin the magic I think because it takes away the sense of longer for more. The stories that allow the audience to wish for more are some of the most magical stories that you will ever hear.

I love this movie and yes this is the best movie in the world! I have watched it 353 times and yes I have counted, I have never gone board from it!

I agree with you 100% i know spirited away came out in 2001 (when i was 4) and i didnt see it until 2016 (when i was 19) and i fell in love with it after a former classmate told me about it. I would love a sequel but some movies are so good that they don't need one :D

I grew up watching most of his films alongside disney films, but I had no idea that this film is so popular outside Japan. So great to hear all these complements. He makes us Japanese proud ^^

I wish they would make a Spirited Away 2. Spirited Away 1 was AMAZING!!!! I would have Chihiro remember through the purple hair-tie and then she would have to find Haku again. Either in the real world or in the spirit world. Maybe she will have kids who can go on the adventure with her.

I am so obsessed with this movie!! Best movie ever.
The movie was amazingly done and I know the chances of getting a sequel is a big no go but I want to see chihiro as a teenage girl ending up in the spirit world again by accident. She meets everyone again and maybe even share a kiss with haku. There can even be a new villian (or an old enemy). But we can only dream of a sequel
This movie would work greatly as a large, very long novel, or an epic novel. I am sure it would turn into a National Epic of Japan :D

I really don't know if you feel the same way but I guess 2D anime really makes something magical emotion to the viewers than the 3D remember the Anastasia Disney movie, the Pocahontas, Little Mermaid. Today 3d films is just an adventure, action and nothing more.

It really depends what of genre the 3d movie is. Their are ton of 3d animation movies who also capture fantasy amazingly, they just do it different.

Miyazaki has a big imagination and is really talented and realistic, I don't think he could ever ruin the sequel to this movie. Just think about it.

Hayao Miyazaki is amazing. That's all I have to say.
It's very clear that Miyazaki and Ghibli in general have made Pixar better than they would have been (and we have masterpieces now like Wall-E, UP, toy story 3...), they inspired them a lot, Lasseters hero in animation is the master Hayao himself... Enough said. Spirited away is my favorite animation film ever and top 10 all-time any genre.

I was skeptical at first... but after re-watching the entirety of this documentary, I can say with fair certainty that this Disney crew was NOT "emphasizing their dubbing role above everything else" or "boasting about perfecting the original animated film". Far from it...
I thought this crew sounded humble in general, and at least two-thirds of the entire presentation was spent praising Miyazaki and his directing/artistic abilities. Just because a dubbing crew discusses their role and challenges in the dubbing process doesn't necessarily mean it's boasting or over-emphasis of themselves. Most people who contribute to any part of a project like this would want to talk about their experience anyway. But for some it's automatically "mean-spirited" to show pride in one's English dub work to the public. >_> I don't care anymore. They deserve to be proud of this dub.
Even IF this documentary wasn't as in-depth about Miyazaki's work as some hoped, it's still a decent introduction to his work for the unfamiliar. Those who want an in-depth (~done to perfection~) Studio Ghibli documentary should, instead of predictably blaming this, check out the film, "The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness". Seriously.
No way, every single hayao miyazaki film requires absolutely no sequals watsoever, they are complete to the fullest and nobody should ask more from it

I think in a way, Miyazaki films can never have a sequel. It would ruin the magic I think because it takes away the sense of longer for more. The stories that allow the audience to wish for more are some of the most magical stories that you will ever hear.
