I'm fine with actual children voicing fictional children. Besides, the Fanning sisters did a great job as Mei and Satsuki Kusakabe in My Neighbor Totoro.
I didn't have a problem with the fact that they cast someone close to Chihiro's age to be the English dub actor for Chihiro. I just feel like Daveigh Chase wasn't a good choice. She made Chihiro sound way too young, more like a seven-year-old than a ten-year-old. I wish they could have tried having a 13-year-old American actress voicing Chihiro like Miyazaki did for the original Japanese dub. It would have made Chihiro's journey into adolescence more realistic to American audiences by having her voiced by someone who's realistically at that stage in their life.

I'm Japanese and I've watched the original version over and over as a child, long before I've come across the English version. And despite all that imprinting, the English version feels just as natural and authentic to me. Their interpretation of characters is in depth and you can see real dedication of all the voice actors. Very grateful that I got to enjoy this great movie with a different take.
Jason Marsden was PERFECT for Haku. I remember hearing his voice-overs in promos of Disney Channel shows from back in the day, and I never thought he'd actually end up doing an English voice dub for an anime film, let alone an anime film made by Studio Ghibli.

I had an ancestor who fought at the Battle of Fredericksburg and was one of the Confederate Irishmen of the GA Regiment that stood behind the Stone Wall. He wrote after the battle that the Irish Brigade got closest to the wall, and they stood the longest. Even though they were Yankees and the "invaders" he thought no ill will of them and admired their courage. I just happen to love Irish culture, Southern heritage, and civil war and revolutionary war-ear banners from both sides.
I just love how dedicated and devoted John Lasseter is to these Ghibli projects, you can tell he has a lot of respect and admiration for Miyazaki's work
I couldn't believe it when I realized that the woman who voiced Meg in Disney's "Hercules" was the one voicing Lin for the English dub of "Spirited Away." When I first watched "Spirited Away" in English, I though the actress voicing Lin sounded familiar. I just didn't figure out where I remembered her voice from until seeing this DVD featurette, LOL!
I think the most accurate to the original character's personality would be Lin's voice actress. It's not that her voice is the most similar to the original seiyuu, but her voice is the most similar to Lin.

I've loved Donnie Darko for years, so finding out Daveigh Chase was in Spirited Away was really cool. Then I watched The Birds for the first time yesterday and was really intrigued by Suzanne Pleshette who played Annie in the movie, and by some coincidence she's in this too. What a small world

It is so amazing how quickly forgotten Spirited Away became once it won it's Oscar. The backstory and development behind 2005's Valiant clearly demonstrates how little an impact it had on the animation community.

Marsden's voice was okay but his voice is so mature, sometimes it just didn't fit right like half of the time in the movie even though he has a lovely sounding distinct voice. Honestly, it fits. Despite his appearance he's a very old Spirit, although his river may have been young before it was destroyed - giving him his eternally youthful appearance.

But seriously, despite the fact that James is much older than he appears and much older than Haku, he did a terrific job with the way he voiced Haku in the English dub of "Spirited Away." Not a lot of voice actors can easily pull that off. The only other voice actor I know who could also do that was Scott Nenville who voiced Robin in "Teen Titans."

If you even watch the original japanese version in full japanese which I have the script hasn't changed that much it remains intact like most anime are. If the english side starts changing too much the original producers do not approve of it. When dubbing companies dub the english, they have a limitations from Japanese creators as to how much they can alter the script for English purposes.
I love all the English American voices although I have ambivalent feelings as to why they picked J Mars to voice Haku. Mars has a lovely distinct voice but his voice is to deep and mature for the role. Oh well, he's one of my all time favorite actors so I'm still glad he was a part of this. Also, if you guys watch Eerie Indiana, his role Dash X almost has the same predicament with Haku that both characters have no idea as to who they are or where they come from. They also seem brutish on the outside but are actually softies in the inside. That is of course when EErie Indiana was canceled after one season and the writers went"what the hell!" and they made Dash X a villain in the last episode with him backstabbing his new friend by deciding to kill him. Ehh, let's just say that the writers were probably mad but I don't know the whole story why they decided on that ending.

That is of course when EErie Indiana was canceled after one season and the writers went"what the hell!" and they made Dash X a villain in the last episode with him backstabbing his new friend by deciding to kill him. Ehh, let's just say that the writers were probably mad but I don't know the whole story why they decided on that ending.
