They always have a great cast for the Studio Ghibli dubs. I'm impressed. I knew I recognized Shizuku's mom's voice - it's the same voice as Kim Possible's mom!
Yeah, every one of these movies has been dubbed quite well, and I find any of them a pleasure to listen to. THE WIND RISES was the only one I didn't particularly enjoy (too slow-going for my tastes, and the performances seemed wooden at times), but even then it's not a bad dub at all. It's just my least favorite. The rest are all fantastic.
I wasn't bothered by Levin, Marin, or Hagarty in that dub -- Dalton sounded fine, and I thought Marin owned the show in that dub, although it helps that his character is a much more active villain than Cob is -- and at least he has a personality. Dafoe I wasn't so thrilled with for some reason, and Restaneo sang well but didn't really stand out to me.
Whisper of the heart's dub is one of my all time favorites. The voice acting was brilliant, believable, outstanding, and convincing. The lines were delivered completely natural. There was nothing forced, saccharine, over the top, and cringeworthy. The chemistry between Brittany Snow and David Gallagher was one of the strong points in the film, made the character's romance scenes work to their finest. Brittany Snow is one of my favorite heroine lead voices in the Ghibli dubs like Yoko Honna being one of my favorite for the subbed versions. Both did a wonderful job on the part when Shizuku sang during the scene when Seiji played the violin and Mr. Nishi came in with his friends and formed an ensemble. One of the most heartwarming moments I have seen in Studio Ghibli whether its English or Japanese. The rest of the cast (David Gallagher, Ashley Tisdale, Jean Smart, Courtney Thorne Smith, Cary Elwes, Harold Gould, Martin Spanjers, and everyone else) really stood out as an excellent cast for this amazing dub as well. I have seen the subbed version a few times then switched over to the dub. In my opinion the dub and sub both equal, although I wasn't too fond of the line changes at the end in the dub. Anyway here's my advice to fans, don't watch Japanese only, watch Japanese first then check out the English version and see which one you prefer.
Porco Rosso had something similar with its English dub. The Japanese wording is a bit harsher and leans in towards the oppressive vibe of poverty and fascism clouding over the characters, but the English dub softens the language to make it more digestible for kids, while adding a healthy dose of extra humor too. They're very interesting versions.
@@FreshTillDeath56 Yes they are both interesting versions. I have no problem with either, although the Japanese version shows more complex themes and dialogue, all the more reason to watch sub first. Plus dialogue changes are my most hated thing in dubs.
"'The Cat Returns' is actually a prequel to 'Whisper of the Heart.'" I was actually surprised by this statement Cary Elwes made. I can see why it would make sense to him since Baron is depicted as being older in "Whisper of the Heart" than he is in "The Cat Returns." However, considering the fact that "Whisper of the Heart" was made before "The Cat Returns" and that "The Cat Returns" is pretty much Shizuku's "polished" version of her story in "Whisper of the Heart," I kind of prefer the idea of Baron's life story in "Whisper of the Heart" being a prequel to his life story in "The Cat Returns." Plus, Baron doesn't really look or sound that much older in "Whisper of the Heart" to me.
I feel like he meant, The Cat Returns features a younger Baron as Shizuku wrote it. It is definitely not a prequel, it's a movie about a story a character in a movie created. Maybe she meant to tell the Baron's story before he was separated from his love and now he resides in a quiet place, waiting for his love to return, and he has waited very long.
At first I was horrified at Brittany Snow and Ashley Tisdale doing these characters - I was afraid they'd play them like their Disney Channel shows. Luckily, it turns out they were able to scale it back and play more down-to-earth, more natural teenage characters. Tisdale sounds totally natural asking 'Do you think about boys?' And Snow, to my surprise, was able to scale her singing back on 'Country Roads' and not sing it like a pop star, but like a real girl who's not used to singing.
I was wondering why lots of people shipped Namine and Riku together besides the "You and Kairi smell the same" scene in Kingdom Hearts. Now I know why :)
@GleekGlambert21 It's a slice-of-life film, revolving around the characters as they come of age. It's about reaching for your dreams, growing up, and falling in love. Many people have been inspired by this movie. I think it has more point to it than many films nowadays; for what it lacks in plot, it makes up for in heart.
I had no clue they had used some real talented actors for the dub. In a way, that's the most impressive part. I never thought for one second anything like "Oh, that's this actor doing the voice" It all felt so very natural.
I just watched the English dubbed version now, it was so wonderfully done...(Among other Eng-dubbed animes, this one was done the most perfectly...!!!!) So, I couldn't help but looking for behind the scenes!!!
I really enjoy the film in english and i think all the voice cast did a great job. And i knew there was a link or something with the baron! Anyway i love this film!
I loved Brittany Snow's characters that she's been casted as in all the films I've seen her in. Shizuku is awesome and I especially liked her as Amber in "Hairspray".
@gabbytwilightgirl indeed, Ashley Tisdale, Brittany Snow, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Jean Smart (she's wonderful) And Cary Elwes is a rather handsome man in his right (I saw him in Robin Hood: Men in Tights and The Princess Bride)
god anything david gallagher voices i will definitely watch it! he was simon camden from 7th heaven! ahh he's soo hot lol he was def my boy crush esp when he voiced riku in kh
@MsGera1994 I watched it. It's good, but not like WOTH. Anne Hathaway is the main girl. She's actually pretty good. Oh, and let us not forget the ever talented Tim Curry!
7:05 Cmon who told this guy that Whisper of the Heart is the sequel. Clarification: Whisper of the Heart is the prequel, not only was it made first (1995), it also happens before The Cat Returns (2002) in the story. I mean just read the title, "The Cat RETURNS". So when Cary Elwes said that the Baron is in his 50s it made me cringe so much.
It’s not the timeline of the films themselves, but of the two stories of Baron that Shizuku wrote. The Cat Returns is a fictional tale that Shizuku wrote, presumably much later in her life after she matured as a professional author, and takes place before her first story that were depicted in Whisper of the Heart.
I'm trying to figure out, Melissa Disney and Erin Chambers were in the dub too, but which characters did they voice? If anyone knows, tell me, I'm curious?

I realize Im kinda randomly asking but does anybody know of a good site to watch new tv shows online?
@Raphael Jack I use FlixZone. Just search on google for it =)
@Mack Keith definitely, been using flixzone for since march myself :D
"I love you, Shizuku-- Hey, the sun's out!"
Love that

@@bitzterx3054 you know I’m talking about Yuko right? The voice of the best friend is Ashley.

Holy shit! Riku and Namime's voice actors!
