Interesting to see that an Academic training helps you to produce a finished abstract portrait, I wonder just how many abstract portrait painters out there could take a classical portrait to a finish. I fell in love with Cesar Santos when he did the interview with Andrew tischler. Not only is he an amazing artist, but he is also a very cool individual that knows how to enjoy his life. Although I've followed his channel for quite some time, his travels through the United States are captivating. He reminds me of the beauty of our landscape through the simplest of views. Another great video César, much appreciated 👏, I love that Alla Prima technique, starting with big brushes, masses and abstractions, ending with details and likeness with some knife touches. Also leaving the background as is it's interesting.

I’m almost out of oil paint now and i felt uncomfortable when he squeezed that much paint onto the palette but great work nonetheless considering the how little time you have working with alla primas

...I aint gonna lie, the alla prima method is one technique that im working on so I felt uncomfortable watching Caesar paint this portrait lol this gave me lots of confidence seeing how thick you applied the paint and not worried about "smooth color transitions" ...the color harmony worked out perfectly...a true master of observation and artistry...
My dream is to paint like this someday

I really got inspired by the abstract approach of this. I struggle with working 'to tight' and feel like I am focussed on the details to much. It often makes my art feel stiff and lifeless .I will try this and hope it helps me. How does it help you on your artistic journey?
For me it's a matter of perception and meaning, no so much of process. Once we feel what we are painting the paint quality follows
I do share my process though because I know it helps to find our language

Man, that's great. I predict Cesar is going to move more and more away from his tighter academic painting to become a more painterly realist-impressionist. Less Michael John Angel, more Gerhartz or Schmid. Or, comparing to the greats of the past instead, less Bouguereau and more Sargent.
I think he can navigate easily through most painting genres.
I said to myself 'nah mate you've overworked it, about 1 minute from the end. Then a few little flourishes and he proved me wrong!
@@rickh3714 I hear ya. He has the skill to do pretty much anything. I just mean a natural progression of his artistic voice might lead him to less academic technique and become more painterly. IMO, painterly painters *tend* to focus on design more (of course there are exceptions), and I think Cesar isn't just a talented realist, but is really a talented designer who can paint. So, it'd make sense for him to become less academic as time goes on. Either way, I'll continue looking to his work and appreciating it.
