Thank you sharing this. I learned so much in that 13 minutes. I went through my brushes and did the test and was surprised to find that I do have some good ones. Thank you for explaining the difference between the oil and watercolor brushes too. I think it is easy for novice painters to get lazy about brushes, but your tools really do make a difference. Now, my approach to painting will be totally different. I will first think of what the painting needs when I choose my brushes.
I love Rosemary & Co brushes, it's worth every cent of the delivery to Australia! Cesar thank you so much for sharing how you use them, love your work! I am self taught in oils and learnt portraits from great RUclips like yours!
Bought about 25 recently . Love them. I still like some of the Escoda. I even like a few of my old watercolor brushes. But if I could get all the money back on all the brushes and spend them on Rosemary I would. We used to get brush wholesalers out to the California Art Institute in Thousand Oaks. This guy bought leftovers and blemish errors. I remember him spreading out maybe a thousand brushes on the floor. I think having Rosemary brushes is going to improve my art. It’s that simple.
I was disappointed on my second Rosemary order. The first order they included several amazing chocolates. I was looking forward to them on the second purchase, but none were in the box. Oh well, the brushes themselves are working wonderfully. I guess I will have to get my own chocolate. ;) BTW, your artwork is amazing and I will definitely be checking out your other videos.
Your channel has quickly become one of my favorite on RUclips! Thanks so much for this lesson on brushes. And yes, Rosemary brushes are one of the best! They are one of my faves along with the Escoda brushes. I don't normally use the natural brushes for my oils though, usually use them with watercolor because I fear that I would spoil them haha. What's important for me too though is the brush care, best ways to clean them and keep them. Perhaps you could share that in one of your upcoming video? Keep up the good work and we'll be watching always...
0:00 till 0:26 is inspiration enough for why everyone should paint well, get those brush company supporting you, and you got free brushes untill you die. Keep it it Cesar. Cuba forever!
Thank you for a really informative 13 minutes. I've been painting 34 years and just realized I've limited myself to rounds, filberts, and flats. Why I have no idea but I feel like I forgot I had more tools.
I thought the painting in the thumbnail was a real person and this was one of my wife's makeup tutorial videos, I was like "How did this get in my subscription videos?!" lol
Bravo, Cesar! Brilliant, as always. I'm passing this link on to the Angel Academy students, as well as my Florence- and Belfast-workshop students. (I LOVE your portrait of Savannah, by the way.) As you know, I and many of the top Realists today use Rosemary's brushes-I second your endorsement of them.
first choose the available paint with the nearest hue to the hue of what you're copying. then adjust the value by adding white and/or yellow to lighten OR black and/or brown to darken to arrive to the value of what you're copying. then adjust the chroma by adding a neutral grey of the same value to lower the chroma or a high chroma paint of same value and hue to increase the chroma.
A tip recommended from a artist in an instructional video I own was to apply standard hair conditioner to the brush after cleaning and let dry over night. This works great for all natural hair brushes. Does wonders for holding the shape of the brush. Any brand will work.
Wow Cesar, I just found out about you and your work because of your affiliation with the ARC... I must say, I'm astonished by your charisma, your insightful comments, your vast knowledge and the quality of your videos! Instantly subscribed to your channel.. I do have a question: which kind of rigger brush do you use?
D&T Floyd you could use solvent, oil, soap and water, or a combination of the three. I often give my brushes a rinse in solvent, give them a quick wash in Walnut oil, and wipe off the excess oil to condition the bristles. You can also use soap and water, but be sure you get all of the soap out of the bristles so that it does not get into the paint. If you get soap into the paint it can compromise the integrity of the painting. You do t always have to clean your brushes thoroughly, because it can wear them down. I have a light brush, a mid tone brush, and a dark brush. I just wipe off the paint and dip them in oil. Try those out and see what works best for you. Let me know how it works. :) Happy to help.
contigo aprendo sobre pintura y practico inglés jajaja. sigue así. No cocnocía esa marca, suelo usar escada, pero no soy profesional. me alegra que hayas hablad8 de este tema que ya te había preguntado en otro video. gracias.
Hey Cesar, can u share with us your methods to clean and extend the life of these brushes? I've gone through many brushes throughout the years and I don't know if I'm going through then too fast or if I'm cleaning them efficiently.
Hi Benjamin, great question! Follow our page - we are starting to show more videos about brushes/brush making etc and cleaning them will come up on there sometime too!
Benjamin Blackstar you could use solvent, oil, soap and water, or a combination of the three. I often give my brushes a rinse in solvent, give them a quick wash in Walnut oil, and wipe off the excess oil to condition the bristles. You can also use soap and water, but be sure you get all of the soap out of the bristles so that it does not get into the paint. James Garza there are lots of methods for cleaning brushes. You can uses the same brushes for acrylics and oils but make sure they are very clean before switching. Typically natural hair is used for oils because it can tolerate the solvents and soak up more paint, whereas synthetics can break down over time from solvents. I usually clean my oil brushes with a little bit of gamsol and then use linseed oil to clean off excess paint and to condition them between sessions. You can also use soap and water. Try them all out and see what works best for you. :)
I totally agree with you about Rosemary Brushes ! When I discovered them I could use my old brushes anymore. I just regret their extra-long mangoose wich is not avalaible anymore even if it is nice for those little cute beast :-)
Cesar i wish you would make a video about BLENDING, it seems no one ever has done that. I wonder your process of blending and creating form with values and colors to create a realistic form. Also how old masters blended oil would be good to learn.
THAnk you for all your valuable help and information. You’ve inspired me to become a better artist and to learn how to paint. Can you please do a video explaining varnishing. When to do it and when not to? Thank You 🙏🏼
D.O.N MUZIC varnishing protects the painting and evens out the colors, so there really isn’t much of a downside to varnishing. It will likely make your paintings look better. If you use gamsol, you can varnish when it is touch dry. If you use damar varnish, you may need to wait up to six months to make sure the painting is dry and the varnish won’t crack. Let me know if you have questions. Happy to help. :)
I have used and still do these rosemarys mongoose and others for years Apart of the mongoose all others fell the same. Da vincis have very nice ones so do Leonardo as well. After a point brushes make no difference to me anymore, I'll adjust them to my style.
I have been painting watercolor a bit over a year. Currently using good quality synthetic brushes....mostly Princeton Co & Silver Brush Limited Co. I want to purchase red sable RosemaryCo round brushes but having difficulty deciding what series to buy (series 22, series 8, series 99 or series 33). Can you make a recommendation and/or tell me which series RosemaryCo ROUND brushes you own and why you chose them. Only interested in the ROUND brush at this point in time. Thank you so much. I paint small (6"x9") landscape, still life's, birds
What type of lighting do you use when painting indoors? Would you be able to do a video on this subject? I find it difficult to see the paints true value when painting indoors. Living in Florida, it's hot as it is outside and I can't paint outdoors as I'd like because I use acrylic paint and it will dry quicker then usual. Because of this I'd really like to know the lighting situation for indoor projects if it's ok with you.
Jules McQueen Hi there, I use KY gel (personal lubrication), to keep my acrylic paints drying too quickly or glycerine. They don't hurt the painting, and you can get them from the supermarket, they can also be used for glazing as well, KY is more Matt and glycerine us a bit more glossy but neither of them are too over the top. Cheers!
Cesar , I have a video theme idea... "Western perspective vs Eastern stacked perspective". I really love stacked perspective and I feel a lot of people misunderstand it because it hasn't been properly explained 2 them. Thank you bro -Vic
Many years of experimenting and mucho $ spent along the way. Tried them all ( except Rosemary) Tried Escoda and got 3 that fell apart on first portrait. Rosemary all way from now on Great painting. I need to go to Angel or I have no chance of getting within 70% of you.
Hey can I request you to make a video on how to take great care with our brushes? I am a student learning oil painting and whenever I clean my brush, they always end up hardened after awhile :/ it'll be great if you can advise me on this

Sir plzzz. Make a video on how to make the exact colour which we wanted
waiting for the reply experiment until you get the desired color =) and studying color theory always help

Dear Cesar Santos,
As a fan of your art do i have chance to see the completed view of the painting anywhere?
Thank you, this really helps! I wonder, could you refer where you got that huge brush stand on your right- our left - thanks you again!
I love your videos! So helpful! Thank you.
I have two Rosemary brushes - will be buying more!

Thank you for sharing these videos.

please make a vlog on how to preserve paintbrushes after use and does painting needs a lot of brushes?

I love how you describe the use for synthetic brushes -- good to use at the beginning when you can be abusive. Lol
THANK YOU!!!!
Você é incrível!
