I bought the pattern from your Etsy shop and made the wallet yesterday. It turned out great! And I already have a potential customer for Father's Day coming up. 😁
Great video, I also started making some wallets a few years back for family and friend and its very therapeutic like you said, I really enjoy it. I may have to look into the laser machine, that is a game changer. The family is not so happy when I start punching the stitching holes.
This was one of the most enjoyable tutorials I’ve watched in a while! Felt like I was just sitting around making a leather wallet with a friend, lol. Very casual, but your work is professional and beautiful. Thanks for sharing! Just got an Xtool M1 and excited to make some wallets (amongst lots of other things 😆).
@@ValleyForgedthank you! I’ve purchased my veg tanned leather, thread, and other supplies. Very excited to get started, but I have a question, not sure if you’ll be able to help answer since I have a different laser than you. But I’m having a hard time finding the answer and called customer service but couldn’t reach anyone. What I’m wondering is, since I don’t have the honeycomb tray for the bottom (I have an Xtool m1 10w), do you think I should I use risers to lift it of the bottom tray? I’ve seen people using risers and a piece of thin basswood with the leather on top. Just not sure why they’re doing that. I would think airflow but then the air isn’t flowing through the wood anyway so I’m not sure. I might just have to experiment but that makes me nervous haha, so any tips you might have would be greatly appreciated! 😊
Great video pal! I too have a lm3 and a frequent flyer of buckleguy! This video definitely will help me take the leap in leather crafting on my laser! Thanks again brother!
The wallet looks great! Thanks for the video! I like your glue applicator. Question: do you get bad fumes from laser cutting the craft foam? It’s a great idea for prototypes.
First, make sure you are using THE BEST setting to get the lowest char. Use air to blow it off, don't use air assist. You could mask the area you do engraving as well. I don't get any char, but I use already dyed leather which may help. I suppose you could also pre-seal that area with some protection. Hope one or many of the above helps :)
I am just getting started with lasers, I bought my first one yesterday the xtool s1. I am a holster, belt and wallet builder, my question is can you just scan an existing pattern into the software and burn it to scale? I am struggling to find a video on this topic.
I don't see why not. You would just know how to do it in the software. I have never tried to do this in XCS, but you could do it in another program and then import it when you are done.
How are you copying the stitch holes to each layer to line up. I cannot get the "mirror across line" feature in LightBurn to work, to mirror stitch lines from a top half to a bottom half. Since some of the holes may need minor adjustment for spacing, its obviously critical to get those holes lines up for each layer. ???
I put the pocket layer (with no holes) on top of the main layer and just copied the holes. I hope that makes sense. I appreciate the comment and will add this step in my next leather video.
When using any leather glue you need to apply it to both sides that you are gluing. I personally have been using the same glue you're using for 2 years. It needs to set and look more clear before connecting the pieces.
Getting the thread and hole size / spacing right is def a trick. This size and spacing of this wallet is very masculine. Also, tiger thread is flat so looks larger than other threads. Mine are .8mm.
Does wetting veg tanned leather help with charring? I have a Atomstack A5, 5.5 watt and have to run 200/ 100% and 3 passes to cut all the way thru 4-5 oz leather.
Eek! I feel for you. I have not tried to wet it with a diode, only Co2. Do some testing on a scrap and see if there is a difference. It may also alter the cutting ability.
I thought I went over that in the video. But I would say just start (even if just in your head). Go through the process, and when you need something, get it. That should save you $100 at least, lol.
I will have to try it at some point. I am sure it works fine, but I have it so dialed in on the LM3...and for my setup the Monport is just so much more difficult. Mine are outside, so the enclosure actually makes things harder in my case. I have a unique setup.
@@bretoner2Well, just because that is what I charge, does not mean that is what they are worth. But I agree, unless you just love doing it, it is probably not the most profitable thing. I just really love doing it.
It all depends on the thickness of the leather, power settings, is it veg tanned (for sure)? For 3mm leather, you should be able to do it in one pass even with a 5w diode laser. Testing is everything
I have many leather cleaning products, but it is best for it never to get dirty. If your laser and bed are clean, the leather will not be dirty (with the right settings). Settings are the key

@@Theslowandsteadyhomestead I honestly have no idea, I have always used a honeycomb on leather.
@@ValleyForgedI think I need to order one, but I’m going to test it out in the meantime. Thanks!
Just purchased your SVG for Lightburn from your Etsy shop.
Looking forward to trying this out!!
Thank You for making this available!! 🙂
If you make one, post the pic on ETSY. Love to see how these turn out. :) Thanks!
Great videos. You said you would make this and you delivered! I really appreciate this. You are a good teacher.
Thanks for the comment. It makes it all worth it!!
Thank you so much for your help videos!
I really love your videos and presentation style. Keep the videos coming!

Love to hear how it goes. I have so much to learn! Thanks for the comment Joe
This video is excellent, very informative! Thanks so much.
Thank you, a lot of valuable content.
Awesome! Thank you!
Just subscribed to your channel. Great work i will be following you and looking for more videos. Once again, great work.
Thanks! Let me know what you are interested in.
Superb bro 👌

The craft foam does not seem to create very much fumes. Of course I have a good vent system as well. Thanks for the kind words.
I am about to begin making leather products. Can you please give me a list on links to the products you use.
titebond wood glue it is non toxic and bonds the leather good.
very cool thanks for sharing
Nice video !!!! Just got an xtool 20w how can I clean the char after I burned a logo on leather .. seem to keep on staining the leather 🥲🥲

Nice vids, by the way.
Can you cut with d1 pro laser cut bright leather and not masking it?
Of course it depends on the leather, thickness, etc...but yes, you just need to get your settings right.
Everyone says the holes will be black. Have you run into that?
Settings are everything. Also, since I am using pretty thin leather, it may help
Have you had many Laser Engravers or did you just get one. What laser engraver do you have right now, and which laser engraver would you suggest.
You should watch my newer videos. I just made one on the best and worst. I have had many many lasers.
Cool channel! What size thread did you use or what size have you found works best for this wallet?
Getting the thread and hole size / spacing right is def a trick. This size and spacing of this wallet is very masculine. Also, tiger thread is flat so looks larger than other threads. Mine are .8mm.

This work with an xtool 10 w?
Absolutely!
Your telling all my secrets
Did I miss any? lol
what basic tools does a person need for making small things like wallets n stuff like that?

@ValleyForged thank u!
So how does leather cut on the Monport?

Curious what you charge for a wallet like that?
$65-$80
@@ValleyForged thank you. Would makenit worth it then

just curious, I know your diode is higher than 5watt, but what are your number of passes to actually cut the leather?
It all depends on the thickness of the leather, power settings, is it veg tanned (for sure)? For 3mm leather, you should be able to do it in one pass even with a 5w diode laser. Testing is everything
what watt is your Diode Laser? i just bought a 5.5w one and idk if its strong enough for leather work?
It is :). Just get your setting right depending on thickness
@@ValleyForged awesome thanks for the reply I’m just really engraving so should be perfect hahah
Does it work with Xtool creative space?
It is an SVG, so it will work. I just can't verify as I do not have one.
Diode lazer watt ?
What thickness of thread do you use
.8mm for the mens, .6mm for the ladies
Thank you.
If I were to buy your SVG, and than make the wallet could I sell It to other people.
Of course, I would encourage that. Hope to see what you do!
Thank you that's amazing.
You're paying over $20 a square for 3oz vegtan? Tandy leather 12-15 square side $80, less than $7 per square
I actually own both. I also have a full hide of Montana ($150). It just depends on what you want to work with. You do you :)
HOW DO YOU CLEAN THE LETER
I have many leather cleaning products, but it is best for it never to get dirty. If your laser and bed are clean, the leather will not be dirty (with the right settings). Settings are the key
