The Loveliest Sail | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 74

- It’s island time, baby! In this episode we take you exploring with Rahm, discover some amazing seascapes off the beaches of Great Guana Cay, cook the best coconut French toast, and start to assimilate to cruising life in the Bahamas.
We also fly our drone for the first time while under sail - and it all nearly goes tits up! In our last episode, we showed you how we land the drone onboard, even offering a few tips, like we were pros or something. But flying a drone is even harder from a moving vessel, scarier over water, and the worst when you have to navigate around a sailboat’s rigging to retrieve it, while moving.
We’ve flown our Mavic at anchor, and while underway on the rivers - when the mast and rigging were removed. And we’ve flown it with others onboard who could help navigate while landing (which really is a two-person operation). But, we had yet to try this out under sail with just the two of us…

THE ABACO ISLANDS, POST-HURRICANE DORIAN:
This footage was filmed prior to the utter devastation wreaked by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. Dorian hit the Abaco Islands as a category 5 hurricane, with sustained winds of 185 mph, flattening most structures and leaving 70,000 people homeless. They are still rebuilding - and will be for a long time.

Sand in your bits. Now that was funny. Great video guys.
Another nugget? Wow! Congratulations! Health, happiness and long life to the new sailor. I have so enjoyed Kazza and Brian's adventure. Now it's going to happen again. Just like life!
Bacon & Bits all in one episode... Y'all have the stuff to go all the way on this channel... Keep up the good work and by all means after the nap...
11.13 yes that’s very exhilarating.....😎👍🏻👌
Love your channel. Cruising is not an option for me at this time but I do enjoy cruising via your and other you tube channels. Be safe and live each day to it fullest. Live is fragile.
After a 10 year hiatus from sailing, the hubs and I decided that 2020 was the right time to get back to the water. We now have SV Little Blue, a Hunter 33.5 and are gradually working on gaining the courage and skills to edge her farther offshore. We stumbled upon your series and love the way you integrate beautiful video work into your sailing life.
Congrats and best of luck to you with the new boat!
Even the small reef dives you guys are doing is better than 99% of what most people ever get to see. Love it. #sandinyourbits ;)
This island is Magic.
Thanks
Top notch video.
That IS another beautiful video. Thank you, both, for all your hard work. Wonderful seeing places I will not see.
Soulianis is looking fantastic... you've done a great job.
Thank you!
Beautiful water beautiful video!
This is the clearest video I've watched. Thanks for beautiful video.
I REALLY LIKE THAT EVERYTHING IS BETTER WITH BACON ....WELL EVERYTHING IS BETTER WITH BACON ...L O L LOVE YOUR YOUR SHOW
Love watching you guys. Been watching for so long, but this really is your first proper cruising adventure, really enjoy the real life. Congratulations both of you for your news
What a place
One of your best yet! Thanks for sharing the adventures.
The loveliest little video. Brilliant.
You guys! Lovely! ❤️❤️❤️
Came in Whale cut once and passed through fine. Some swell. There was a Gulfstar 47 coming in behind us about a 1/4 mile. All of a sudden a huge swell out of nowhere heaped up and broke right where he was. I really thought that he might pitch pole. Wow, very sobering. We had just passed through a couple of minuets ago. Glad to see the reefs so beautiful. But sad about the hurricane. Probably ripped up the reefs too. Beautiful video underwater especially. I had a 10.5 foot Rib and a 15 Yamaha 2stroke on the back of my Tartan 37. Yes, it was a bit much. On large davits on arch. But once you have a good and seaworthy planning rib, you will never go back. 2 strokes are the way to go. 4’s are way to heavy and much harder to maintain. My 15 only weighed 78 lbs.
Great video!
We noticed with the new addition to your family called the paddleboard’ board that space is becoming limited :-) any more new children you will have to get a larger boat! :-)
Im so Pumped for you guys! The world is your oyster! All the best!
This is my fave of the few vids I've seen ~ Especially appreciated the Drone Release and Retrieval experience! Stunning photography! Yay!
So great as usual. You two have always been so captivating. Since day one you have always done the little things that make your stories so freakin great. Your use of music, your pacing, your shooting, editing, audio, dry humor, and obvious affection for one another are infectious. I have worked in television and video production all my life and I, and many others, notice all the things you do to tell a story in such a compelling way. Less is more in your case for sure, I wish I had more, but I would much rather you take the extra time to produce quality than crank out more videos just to feed the beast. Know this, I always smile when I get my notification that you two have posted another gem...just like this one, fantastic!
🙏🙏🙏
Tipsy y'all is my new favorite. So funny.
One of the best sailing channels...very well shot..love it
Loved your smile Lauren...sailing thru the cut!! The wind blowing onto a lee shore. The part...of knowing you did it, even as the old salts Christopher Columbus had to do...just as the pirates, but 300 years too late!!!!
🌬....⚘

GREAT EPISODE! :)........ good to see you guys finally out getting into Caribbean sailing and new adventures.
Colors are amazing.
I love this video, and the color of the ocean. Its nice to see how relaxed you are.
It’s relaxing
How great is it you can get pictures of YOUR boat underway. I love drones. Really cool snorkeling footage to. Stay safe Mom And Dad God Bless!
Congrats on the news about the new crew.
Great Video! Nice to see you so relaxed now that you had made it to Bahamas.
On another note, congrats on the impending little one. Sailing can prepare you for parenthood (to some extent), planning, preparing, setting up for the worse situation, but pleasantly capable to handle whatever happens.
May your little "Kirluren" bring you many smiles and joy !
Its always nice to share a few minutes in your adventure. Just have to say the camera you are using really helps the viewer enjoy the vivid colors and crisp images. Wow! Good job!
Your videos have gotten so much better with the music choices. Keep sailing so I can ride along vicariously😎
Just watched this episode again, love it!.. anxiously awaiting your next. 😎
Perfect music choices ❤️
Beautiful under water shots! REALLY enjoyed the drone struggle! Gives me the “almost like I’m there” feel.
May I offer a suggestion: Get a deep sea rod & reel that you can use to troll a lure when you are sailing. You just might catch dinner and have fun doing it. You can get a rod holder, rod, reel, line and lures for under $500. The rod holder just clamps on to a stanchion or railing. Troll a lure and you go about your business on the boat until you get a fish. Then reel it in!
I love that episode, Just what I needed after a crazy week of work in the city. The french toast looked awesome.
Great video guys pretty dang relaxing 😎
Thanks guys, wonderful episode! And the Bimini is Awesome!! Yes, ain't sailing loverly!!
The folks in the Rossi was looking at you when you was looking at them. Spy vs Spy! Great video Kirk and Lauren. Glad y’alls safe!
Lovely episode -- thank you!
Loved the diversity of music in this video.
Thanks guys, excellent colors and subject.
Wonderful, many thanks for a great movie. You found some truly gorgeous snorkelling spots, any dive pro will tell you how rare and fragile they are (my old job)... we were exceedingly careful about anchoring, i.e. not on the reef, only in sand, if no sand available drift dives only. A strictly no-touch policy was observed, this allowed the locations to remain perfect and magical for the next trip. Paying clients were kicked back into the boat if in violation, part of the small print and rightly so. No criticism intended but feel duty bound to point out the best practices for anyone unaware, thanks again for a fine video.
Great video! Beautiful colors and wonderful camera work. Enjoyed.
Thanks James!
Oh, thank you for those gorgeous Bahamian views and for introducing me to Johnzo West!
Ah, this sail put me at total ease. Thanks. WCTarheel you said it like it is. Kirk has won the jackpot.
Beautiful, I love the drone shots 😊👍
I like the shots of the few multihulls at anchor in the background!
Looks like heaven to me!
The videography is always fantastic but I'm especially liking the very chill music choices. Well done!
Thank you! We were super lucky to partner up with our friend Johnzo West for the launch of his new album "Waves". He's to thank for most of the vibe in the last two episodes :)
Nippers! Mix of joy and sadness to see the scenes from your Abaco sails. A sister of mine who lives in Nassau (from Ohio) introduced us to Elbow Cay/Hope town and the surroundings ten years ago with several visits since. Nippers, On Da Beach, Cracker P's. and other such places are very special. The devastation and slow recovery since Dorian can be heartbreaking. Such a wondrous area. My wife (a Fond du Lac Wisconsinite) and I love your stories and posts. Thank you for them. Hope you see and share more of the Bahamas, perhaps Norman's Cay and the Exumas?
I love your Navionics anchor distance trick. I do the same thing! Have fun
Awesome episode guys! The french toastes looked yummy.
Great job.
I have never been to the Great Guana Cay, but ya make it sound like something place I should have stopped at.
Great video guys. Lot warmer and sunnier than the UK. You're an inspiration for those of us who want this dream !
I've seen a 34' tartan for sale in Cheboygan that's tempting. Not too far from where you got yours. Hmm
People make a Bimini for their dinghy with solar panels so they can extend range/performance. Could be a project since you did so well withh the main Bimini !
Keep on having fun 🌅
I hear me some Stick Figure in the background! Whoo!
Love the drone footage !!! I love snorkeling down there... I dove down to the bottom off of Lucaya beach and had my hand on the sandy bottom, seen something move next to my hand, went topside and kicked my fins, and up came a Big Manta Ray up out of the sand and swam away... it was his eye that I seen move... I just about pooped myself !!!
The color of the water is incredible
DAMN!!!! and Congratulations! After all the preparation, all the learning, all the anguish, all the motoring, YOU ARE THERE! Really liked that your showing daily life. I'm a sucker for cooking segments (more Please). The editing of the reef segments with the mixing of the water noises and the music was spot on. So glad for you two. Now instead of Lemon Ricotta Pancakes this Sunday I have a craving for French Toast. 😁😁😁
Oh man Lemon Ricotta Pancakes are the best too! 🤤
Amazing drone shots while sailing. Well worth falling into the dingy to retrieve the drone! :)
Now that's the good life! ⛵🍹🏝
awesome work again! love the videos ! you are one hell of a team!
Thank you!
👍nice underwater and drone. You two are rocking it. Have fun and fair winds
Thank you!
Outstanding camerawork! It looks like a professional ad video... You are SO going into making films when you leave the ocean!
Congrats on the little sailor!
Congrats on the little nugget! Just found out we're having our first too
That is awesome!
You burnt the French toast and it's the best!!! That bread must be awesome. ;) Great music. See you next time.
Loving the music...
That little blue stripey fish keeps following you!
Awesome!!
Really enjoyed seeing you incorporate some cooking into your video.
NIPPERS!! Great spot. Was there in 2017.
All you need for perfect French toast is eggs with a healthy splash of vanilla beating in with a splash of milk and some powder sugar on top and about a gallon of miss butterworth beacon is good but those little round sausage links drenched in the mis butterworth and a huge ice cold glass of milk to wash it all down with
I have also struggled landing a drone. The secret is deactivating the sensors, as you correctly mentioned. Ah, the water color from the drone...heavenly!
A tip I saw elsewhere is to fly the drone in backwards, with the camera facing out so the collision avoidance doesnt freak out with the sails & rigging and makes it a bit easier to grab. Another Ive seen is to rig a pole hanging off the bottom so its easier to grab mid air.
Damn, that French toast though!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Congrats on the Bub on the way
You can buy a little extension for your Mavic (I think it's for mounting an extra camera under the Mavic) which gives you a perfect little handle under the Mavic so it's way more easy to grab the darn thing out of the air.
New here. Love your channel guys & cool drone shots. Enjoyed your boat work videos.
I can relate to the outboard frustrations, with the Honda I've used for ten years it won't start until the third pull, even with clean gas and spark plug!
Music adds a lot to a film or video (picture a battle scene in Star Wars in the silence of outer space.) Your music selections in the last 2 installments have been exquisite, very professional videos.
Your music selection and mix is sublime. Perhaps you can share more of you production stories with us.
Sand in my bits, ha, ha!
Attach a 12" wood dowel straight down under the drone. This is your handle for retrieval. Great video.
Take a look at a Hydrofoil fin to bolt on to the leg of your outboard motor to get your tender up on a plane 👍 great videos 😊
Not the first sailors I have seen have trouble with their drone landing on a moving boat. At least you got it. I would recommend weight belts for snorkeling, just so much easier. Thanks guys. Pretty nice healthy reef for snorkeling on also.
How kind you are
Nice video! Sv Delos clamped a cut off broomstick handle to the bottom of their mavic so its easier to catch on the boat.
I am on the 3rd day of a cleanse and watching you eat about made me eat my desk. Great video though, you guys are getting really good at this!
I know you have probably come up
With a solution to the paddleboards, given the timing of videos, but I went through the same struggle. Learned that towing them is easy.
Nice! I am Still telling people about the footage you have of Alton and Grafton!
I spent New Years Eve 1999 at Nippers and rang in the new Millennium there. Johnnie and Troy are great bar people.
Yay a new vid.....my favorite sailing couple!!!
You guys looking good love the videos keep it up. S/V Chance
Frying some bacon right now 😁 💕 totally agree with Kirk ☺️
🥓!
Love both of your channels, and Bacon!!!
OMG, my two fave channels at once. Love you guys! You're totes bacon.
Emagen running in to you guys over here
Dream sail!
