I would guess that he just said it that way so people knew who he meant... Im on a small time team and we all know each others names because we work together.

As soon as he realised what was going on, or that something was wrong, the driver said he turned to the right in an attempt miss the guy. I can't tell when the wheels start turning to the right; did they turn before he drove past the guy or after? For the guy to jump out of the way of the car and the driver to make the conscious decision to turn the wheels right to avoid hitting him, all in a split second, is amazing.
DRaceNut - I'm guessing he meant the 4 cylinders from the 2nd cylinder bank. The crew chief pretty much had his nutsack dipped in the open headers as the guy ripped the throttle wide open lol

They use alcohol for burn out then raise body & switch to nitro, its what those guys are doing after burnout turning valves to open nitro tank, so that thing was running on alcohol when that happened.

Man I was there.....that was really frightening. Whit Bazemore was backing up and his guy was telling him to stop...and he ran for the wall. The guy in who gut bumped by the car was in the pit helping get the other car ready. He fefused to leave. That is dedication.

that guy in the front, cody was my best friend in grade school.. lived across the field from him, out in good ole yamhill oregon... crazy when i heard this on sportscenter
The headers themselves, even being laid back like they are, add about 1000 pounds of downforce just from the exhaust gas coming out of them. A few years back, teams started laying them back even more to use it as thrust. To the point they were burning holes through the body. That's when NHRA stepped in and said they could be no further than 32 degrees. They raised it even more a year or two later. There's a slo-mo video on here of a header breaking loose from the block of a funny car. As soon as the exhaust started firing straight down, it lifted that side of the car off the track. The linkage they are talking about got freed up just before the header went in front of that guys face... You saw what happened to the pants! Someone was looking out for this guy
If the body is blocking the throttle and you can't do a burn out, then it's a good idea to call it a day. If he does get a run in it's probably gonna stick open, and that's gonna be a real bad day. I'd say if you're going to change the throttle linkage it's probably a good idea to see how well it works with the body shut. This was just a fuck up from start to finish. I used to work on race cars, and one of the first things I check is to see if it's getting full throttle. You'd be amazed to see how many cars didn't. They'd have a high dollar motor and the goddamn thing didn't open the carb all the way.
