  • If your Honda is cutting out and you then have difficulty starting it could be a faulty Ignition Control Module.Do you get the engine management light come on just before it cuts out? This little unit may need replacing. If you have a cutting out problem but can start again okay it could be an ignition switch fault covered in my other video here:
    • Honda CRV Mk1 1997 - 2...
If you want to skip to the start of the unit removal go to 2:20
After 2 weeks of cutting out my Ignition control module failed completely and would not start the car.
Get the fault code read and see if it's a primary ignition fault.
This job takes less than an hour and is quite straight forward to do.
Possible compatible part numbers for this unit and year (1997-2001) of CRV (non Vtech engine models I believe) :
    BECK/ARNLEY 180-0218
    LUCAS PART NUMBER DAJ904
    UNIPART NUMBER PEIM8130
    INTERMOTOR NUMBER 15750
    also fits:
    FITS CIVIC IV 1.5 & 1.6 1988-1991
    CONCERTO 1990-1992
    CRXI 1987-1991
    Thanks for watching.

Our 1999 has over 325K miles now and this problem has appeared. It randomly shuts off. Let it rest a minute and it fires right back up and continues down the road. I knew immediately what it was b/c I used to work in an auto parts store. I watched this video as a refresher. Thank you - just what I needed. Incidentally my coworker's gen 1 CRV started doing the same thing. His is running rough too. He already did the task and it solved his car's problem. I've been procrastinating due to several other tasks on my list of chores.

My 2001 CR-V was having this issue, would be able to go for 15 minutes and it would stall out. Thankfully found this video to explain how it all works and got the new part installed. Thank you for the detailed walk through🙏🏼🙏🏼

After many painful frustrated days of trying to diagnose the problem, i eventually came across your youtube video, thank you, it was my Ignition control module. But i could not get the same module part number and tne parts place gave me a replacement part, i think its from a Honda civic, seem to have cured the intial problem, but now the CRV rins very rough, but glad i managed to isolate the problem, tks again

I’d advise anyone to shop wisely and find a deal. On Amazon, a new distributor with cap and rotor was $59 with free prime shipping. Ordered Sat night, delivered Monday. Car running 20 minutes later. Hope it’s good for another 100k now.

This issue is caused by overheating of the module- I just removed mine, put thermal paste inbetween the heat sink and module, and reassembled - and it fixed my random shutting off problem

    Nice.
This stupid little cheap part ($12 eBay vs $150 in some parts stores) cost me 4 months of down time and many hours frustrated! Lol
Mine would run for 3+ minutes and then instantly die. Sometimes it would sputter right after it cut out if I left the key fully on. It would restart 1 to 3 more times and do same quicker and quicker as it heated up. Then eventually would not restart until several hours later after it cooled down, or sometimes next day.
I checked the Ignition switch or relay first. It looked and tested good. I think my ICM was ruined when my spark got suppressed by leaking spark plug hole gaskets. 3 of 4 holes had filled up with oil and I think we're choking the spark signal. So I fixed those also and replaced cap and rotor and coil as well. Plugs and wires were still very good and newer.
So if you have a spark problem be aware it can ruin your ICM or your coil also, as mine did.

Thank you so much for getting back to me! When the car shuts off, it will restart and shut back off immediately if I only wait a few minutes to restart it, but it stays on for me to drive around a bit if I gave it at least 10 minutes. Does that indicate anything particular you can think of

  • @christophercole3055
    @christophercole3055 7 лет назад +3

Hello, first, thank you for a very good and detailed video. I especially appreciated the you detailing the symptoms. For about eight months my engine would suddenly shut off. If I waited 5 or ten minutes it would restart. Now it has completely died, so I am thinking it is either the ICM or the coil. Can you please comment to say whether the aftermarket brand ICM is still functioning okay for you. I am debating on whether to spend $100 for aftermarket or $160 from the Honda dealer. Cheers mate, from the US.

Thanks Mike. I appreciate you getting back to me. I tried just replacing just the ICM, but one of the two mounting screws stripped out. My repair shop ended up putting a new aftermarket distributor in it which came with the ICM and coil pack installed for $270.00. Plus labor it came to $440. Ouch. I told them it might be the ICM, but I think it took them too long in labor to do it. Honda only sells the ICM and coil pack, no more distributors. But their distributors used to be sold minus the ICM and coil pack installed anyway. I'm keeping my old distributor and will replace the ICM and coil pack and keep it as a spare. Cheers

i'm confused? You have a B20A or B20Z series engine, right?I think every mk1 CRV has it? How can you fit that ICM when everywhere online it says you need a different one for B20? Are they lying to sell us the more expensive ones? It's 80 Euros for the cheapest CRV module that i could find online....

10 for ignition switch, that too cheap man, there is more than 80 percent chance may not last very long, there are some good brand like Delphi, 50 dollar denso if you find one, standard motor product 90 to 100 dollar with heat sink. But you may get lucky and last two to three years, like me: I bought the whole distributor from Amazon for just 60 dollar, and it lasted two years more than 30000 miles, it could last more than that but the rotor gone bad and I couldn't remove the screw that hold it, the head screw ripped off even I used good screw driver, and the screw doesn't want to move, then I gave up on it, I should have removed the rotor screw when it got it and put some antiseize lube, and the problem would never happen.
