- Hey Everyone, This is a video i promised along with my Nv4500 Swap videos. It is something i would definitely recommend replacing when you are in there. Not an easy task pulling your trans and everything just for a seal. Hope this helps. Josh
Good work! What if the gasket behind the housing that holds that seal is leaking? What if the o-ring behind that big adapter plate you didn't want to take out is leaking? I do about 9 of these seals monthly and they're simple but they take time. That big adapter plate has to come off and the o ring behind it on the driver side has to be replaced. Once that plate is out, you can remove the small housing that holds the rear main seal, scrape old gaskets, clean surface and begin from scratch with new gasket and rear main seal.
Was very curious as to the cost of this repair done properly of course. Cam seal and rear main. Possibly oil pan as well. Could you say what this job cost in your shop? Or by you in general
I’m in the middle of doing this on my 01. That screw trick did not work on my 22 year old seal lol. Have to disassemble everything and to get seal out .
Would you , or anyone else in this comment section have a link to the housing alignment tool ? I can’t find one for the life of me .
Thanks in advance 🙏🏽
@Alec-jd2bz hey! Sorry to hear that. My seal came with the alignment tool. It was a fel pro seal. Not sure where you would get one otherwise.
@@Schneids15 suppose you wouldn’t happen to still have that tool lying around would you ? I’d pay you to ship it to me , and I’d ship it back when finished . Throw you a couple bucks when I send it back lol 😂
Seems they don’t offer the alignment tool with the kits anymore .. not the Cummins seal anyways . Called a few dealers with no luck …
@@Alec-jd2bz I got one I am going to be done with tomorrow I will send you
Claw hammer adds a nice touch.
Whatever works. It wasn’t a hack job and saves hours of labour.
Good info, but you like most everyone else, get some good lighting. Those led lights light up the area like at high noon. Be way easier to see what your doing as well.
Will keep that in mind for you.
i think they intended you put a flat steel plate over the seal tool before hitting it with a hammer :)
Haha you are for sure right. Every new seal comes with the tool that i could find so i didn’t mind beating it up. One of those jobs you use what you got at the time. Haha
Hey I was curious after a couple of years how your seal is doing? Getting ready to have to do mine. Wondering if this process is the better option.
Hey Bryan. Seal is still A1 and hasn’t leaked a drop.
Thanks for the video man! My seal I bought from Cummins didnt come with the steel ring :(. They told me they dont include it in the kit anymore! Now a guy has to find someone whos got the ring. Super annoying
No problem. Yeah that sucks.
Excellent Job~~
Thanks Steve
How were you able to start the motor with out the transmission in the truck? Can you explain how you bypassed the Neutral Safety Switch. Did you have to support the rear of the motor? ..Thanks
Hey Howard, i simply just grounded out the neutral safety switch wire coming from the transmission to the frame.
Do you remove the transmission, or can you just slide it back? I see the front drive shaft has been removed too. I have a 2006, 3500 dripping oil.
Hey randy. I’m sure the trans could be just slid back. Has to go a fair ways though to give you room. Front shaft has to be removed of unbolted at one end to let the trans/ transfer case backwards
Is this the same process for a 12v Cummins?
I believe they are identical yes.
Do you need to drain the oil?
No
What about the band?
Where do u get that ring to center crank n put seal in
Hey, It came with the seal. It was a fel pro seal i believe
So I just installed mine but it’s crooked should I pull it out and get a new seal or shoukd I just push the rest of the seal in to match?
What did you end up doing?
just bang it in dawg
did that plastic alignment tool come with your kit?
Yes it does. If you look at the pics when ordering it shows none but it does come with it.
Do you have a part number or store you got the rear main seal at
Yes sir. Napa canada. It is a fel pro rear main seal. Hope this helps. Josh
Where did you get the steel ring
It came with the seal.
How'd you start the truck to check for leaks lol
What’s the part number
What year is this Cummins ?
It’s a 1999.
Still dry?
Yes it is.
@@Schneids15 excellent!
hope you put oil on that seal buddy😂
I think your supposed to put them in dry. At least the cummins ones anyway
Did u have to buy that tool
No you can do it with a slide hammer but it is a pain.
No the driver for the seal
Am at Cummins right now trying to find a tool. I think the new way to do this is to buy the 5259499 seal and then buy the Cummins 2892122 new plastic tool. That's what we have come up with since they no longer include that stamped steel piece
This is exactly the wrong way to do it.
When you brought out the claw hammer your credibility goes to shit with me , just saying
Tools don't make the mechanic bud. Mechanic makes the tools. I've seen guys who show up to the shop with snap on everything and they don't know anything and get fired from the shop.
Thank you!! A regular mechanics hammer doesn’t have a claw. This is why i used that, it worked and never leaked a drop. Many people change seals like this daily…. Internet warriors making comments.
