    Use a drag chain and jam cleat and ring system which slows the kayak down in swifter water for drift fishing and will stop the kayak in slower water. The parachute type cord and chain goes off the stern of the kayak, which is safer than anchoring from the sides. Also do not have to worry about tangling with low bridges or limbs from trees, but it sometimes grabs the bottom quickly in swift water. Do like the power pole system that you demonstrated, and any system that slows or stops the float for fishing has value. Looking online the power pole system is from $1100, to over $1200 bucks.

    Watched this video 3-4 times now. Finally pulled the trigger and ordered one for my sportsman 106. I have been using the anchor wizard but with how weedy the lakes here in MN can get I just got sick of pulling up 25lbs of weeds every time I pulled anchor. I also fish rivers quite a bit so I can see the benefits in being able to almost instantly stop in current when needed. Thank you for the review!

    I have 2 of those on my Hobie PA14. It is a nice anchor. I keep backup batteries in my kayak for it. Also it is splash resistant but not water resistant. I was caught in a rainstorm and the electronic area was flooded.

    • @RadDadisRad
      @RadDadisRad 4 года назад +1

      I also used a scuff pad to scuff up my poles so the rollers get batter traction. The rollers do not like sand or mud. The end of one of my poles has worn down a lot. I may invest in a stainless cap to cap the end.

    • @ndyakangler

      Those are great ideas! I’ve torn the motor unit apart a couple times and it seemed to be pretty well built. The only issue I had was with one of the plastic guide rings the pole slides through, the one right inside the top of the motor. It had become worn after a few years so there was some play there and that allowed for the spike to rattle around quite a bit whenever it was up as I was standing and drifting in the kayak. It didn’t effect the function it was more of an annoyance and I didn’t want the noise showing up in videos so I machined a new ring out of HDPE with tighter tolerances and it keeps the stake nice and quiet.

    Very informative video but I think many of us would agree this is out of our price range. That said, I have seen other videos where you make small adjustments in positioning using one hand on your paddle (with rod in the other hand). I tried this over the weekend and it made a huge difference! I used to attach my paddle to my paddle holder on the side of my kayak while I fished which prevented me from quickly repositioning whenever it was windy out. Now I keep the paddle across my lap so I can quickly fix my positioning with small adjustments. Great content NDYakAngler and I always appreciate the calm mannered anglers on RUclips like you. If you could post some how-to's, tips and tutorial videos, that would be even better. Thanks!

    Best overview I've seen so far. I'd love to get one for my SS107 but I'm gonna need to start saving my coins. It would be perfect for the creeks and rivers I fish!

  • @dwayneelizondomountaindewh1465

    This would definitely be a nice addition, especially if you fish mostly shallow river. I fish strip mines sometimes, so I need some type of anchor. I use a window weight, some rope and a anchor hitch. With the window weight, the mud just falls off the anchor. My kayak is also wide as heck, and I can dance on there and do a jig, so I don't think I can tip over. Size of boat matters for different situations. If I could tip over, then I would probably have a hard time with my anchor.

So with this power pole mounted I wouldn't be able to store it upside down unless I made a fat ass block that the rails would sit on without the mount of the power pole hitting the ground

    I just look through the comments and was hoping someone would make the reference to the name Power Pole to Dragon Ball or even the original source Legend of the Monkey King. Still cool. New to the channel, only been watching for a few days, but really like it over most other fishing channels. More relaxed atmosphere and not reacting over the top and not asking to like and subscribe. Another thing is I feel other channels for fishing make a lot of click baiting titles to draw in views, where as you call it how it is. I don't even fish, unless you count fishing games.
    I tried when I was younger and I had a friend who was into fishing. Maybe I was too young or just couldn't get a knack for it. No one really taught me anything about fishing back then and I just winged it. I caught maybe 2-3 fish via pole. The funny thing is once time I went camping with a friend we went down to the river just to cool off(summer). Well as I was just barely standing little more then ankle deep I see a fish swim up to me and was hovering around my bare ankles. I think it was a trout, I'm not very familiar with fish, but it keep swimming up and seems like it nibbling something off my ankle area.
    I just casually reach down and wrap my hand around it and pull it out of the water. The fish is surprisingly chill, isn't really struggling and my friend looks over in time to see me holding this fish. He's making a huge fuss over how your not suppose to catch fish with your hands, but I just tune him out. I just lower my fish friend back down into the water and let him go. Don't worry I didn't have the fish out of the water long. This fish either was cool with people or there was something I couldn't see on my ankle, because that fish stuck around for maybe 5-10 minutes more before heading off.
    For my young self that was the coolest moment of catching a fish. I like to hope he lived a nice long fish life, but since people fish up in that area a lot he probably became someones meal.

    EXCELLENT in every way, Matt. Thanks for taking the time to explain this amazing piece of equipment. I knew about bigger Power Pole units for boats like my 20' center console but had no idea a model was available for my kayak. Speaking of equipment, would you consider doing a video on your choice of paddles? Using a "screen freeze," I THINK I have identified yours as a Bending Branches model, but I'm not sure which one you bought or why. The whole subject of paddle design and materials overwhelms me, and I'll bet you could simplify it for the rest of us.

    • @ndyakangler
      @ndyakangler  3 года назад

      It is a Bending Branches paddle. I’ve had it for about eight years now so that exact one is no longer sold. They still make the Angler Pro, just not with the camo blades. I was looking for a new paddle at the time to replace my old yellow bladed Angler Pro and found the camo one and it was exactly what I was looking for. They aren’t cheap but the carbon fiber handle and fiberglass blades make a great light weight paddle for long days on the water.

    • @ndyakangler
      @ndyakangler  2 месяца назад

      I didn’t really anchor on the river before, which made fishing certain pieces of structure tough if not impossible to get more than a cast at as I drift by. I’d get along the bank out of the current and control myself with the paddle, or find a log or something to get my foot on. I still have a folding grapnel anchor 3lb I think that I use for deeper water with an anchor trolley.

    • @ndyakangler

      It connects to where the rear handle is attached and where the rudder bolts are. My Tarpon is a 2013 so not sure if the new ones still have the rudder attachment point at the back. I added some double sided mounting tape there too since I think they were only size ten screws and it’s more of an upward force at that point.

    Ever heard of "Bernie's River Stick" system.... Its about half the price and all manual with pulleys and cleats. I'm debating between the power pole or the River Stick

    • @ndyakangler

      I've seen it a while back, I like the Power Pole though. Having control at the click of a button is really convenient and the power pole will plant the spike with a lot more force. I have mine set to level two where it lifts the rear end of my kayak probably a couple inches when I drop it, I don't think you'd get nearly that kind of force from a manual version. The thing that would get frustrating with a pulley version is even with the power from the motorized anchor when I go from sitting to standing in my kayak and my weight shifts forward I have to give the button a single click to drop the stake another inch, or else if I'm in any kind of current or a bottom where the stake doesn't dig in more than an inch I'll come off my spot.

    Always wondered about the power pole you use. It looks awesome but probably wouldn’t work for a sit in kayak, right? Might be too heavy? Please let me know. Awesome video!!

      I’ve seen them mounted on sit inside kayaks once or twice. Stability might be an issue with hulls less than 30” or so wide. Even with my Tarpon when I first installed it having that 8’ pole sticking up made it feel like if I leaned to far to the side it might cause me to tip but once I got used to having it there it almost acts like a balance beam and makes me feel more stable. I also have the original solid anchor stake, it’s probably twice the weight of the new ultra-lite version which should be less noticeable. With the stake and the battery you’re looking at around 20lbs of weight so if possible I’d strap something that heavy to the kayak where you’d mount it to see how it handles the added weight. That’s pretty much what I did with my Tarpon before I ordered the anchor, I tossed a 20lb dumbbell in the back of the tank well and paddled around with it for an afternoon.

    Hi Matt, I just ordered a Tarpon 120 for my dedicated river kayak. I don’t blame you if you don’t have time to explain, but I can’t find any information about mounting a Power Pole to a Tarpon. Could you explain how you made your mount? Thank you!

    • @ndyakangler
      @ndyakangler  13 дней назад

      I had to make my own custom mounting bracket with a sheet of HDPE plastic and some ABS plastic bushings I found at the hardware store. I used the rear handle and rudder mounting locations to screw it to the kayak. It was challenging, not one part was a 90 degree square angle so I had to do some geometry and make a couple attempts before I got one I was happy with.

      @@ndyakangler thanks for the info. Really excited about getting the Tarpon. Been using a Jackson Bite for a few years, but really hoping the Tarpon feels quicker / easier moving upstream. I know the Power Pole is an investment, but seeing how many times it’s helped you with a fish already hooked has sold me on wanting one.

      Whatever works! I’d probably need a 25lb anchor to hold me in the current on some parts of this river.

    So if you add another rope to go around the motor and come down the other side could you lock the power pro back without reaching or getting out on shore to lock it .

    So will you hit that down button like a brake while you're coasting along? I imagine if you're moving at a decent speed it would be quite a bit of shock to it to all of a sudden jam into the ground or can it handle that?
    My biggest issue is exactly that you see a spot but you're fighting the wind or current to stop in place and chuck your anchor out. I'm definitely interested in this system. I have a big 7lb anchor I find when I toss it out I am swinging around like a wrecking ball and it's hard to fish a spot when I'm blowing all over the place lol. I'm on a 12 ft nucanoe

      The stake is fiberglass so it flexes a little bit. I do try to stop myself before dropping it, more to reduce the noise and prevent scaring any fish in the area, but I’ve dropped it plenty of times while drifting along fighting a fish and it’s always held up. If something was going to break it would probably be the custom mounting bracket I made myself.

    Going to have to do some modifications to my kayak because as in the same as yours, the back isn’t a flat surface. What did you make your mounting bracket out of?

    Matt, have you ever used a more conventional anchor in the past? Secondly, how does the power pole perform on rockier streams? Any experience with that? The water you're typically on seems to have a predominantly soft bottom. Thanks.

    • @ndyakangler
      @ndyakangler  2 года назад

      I use a claw anchor in deeper water. The power pole works great on rocky bottoms! Sometimes if I drop the stake right on top of a boulder it won’t hold but I wiggle my kayak to slide it over the rock and drop the stake in the crack between a couple.
