Eschenbach and Kent Nagano are both masters of the 6th. The first movement is so difficult to hold together, with all of the sudden digressions along the way. Eschenbach and this young, talented orchestra manage to keep the main energy flowing all the way through, which is something even Karajan could not do. Watching this video, I was impressed with how important the role of the lead flute is, and how well she played her part. I have been listening to Bruckner's symphonies for more than fifty years and am now ready to call this one of my favorites, alongside the more complex 5th and the sublime 7th.
I must respectfully disagree! Young and talented orchestra… Of course, talented! Young? Maybe, with respect to some of the musicians playing the piece, but not the orchestra! This is celebrated Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, which the historical Alte Oper in Frankfurt is the home of. This powerful orchestra has always been one of the most important columns holding German symphonic music tradition with quite a number of celebrated music directors. And this very orchestra recorded all 11 symphonies by Anton Bruckner, yes, it is not a typo, eleven symphonies by Bruckner, along with complete symphonies by Gustav Mahler and Dmitri Shostakovich very successfully for the Japanese recording firm “Denon”, in early 1980s, under the direction of Eliahu Inbal, it was about 40 years ago, those recordings has kept being issues by other companies up until now. The important points with those recordings are: They include first ever, world premiere recordings of first versions of Bruckner’s 3rd (1873), 4th (1874), and 8th (1887) symphonies, all in Leopold Nowak Editions. Also, this orchestra were among the pioneers of recording complete performing versions of Bruckner’s 9th and Mahler’s 10th, again, under the direction of Eliahu Inbal. With such a rich history of tradition behind, this orchestra cannot be considered “young”. Thank you. 🤗
@@aysaraktimur2064 Sorry, I did not mean "young orchestra" in that sense, but was referring to the relative youth of the musicians playing in this performance.

5:45 such a quiet place with such beauiful melodies, so intense and quiet. it might be one of my favourite parts of this piece. Same thing with 8:07 but this grows into something incredibly grand in Brucknerian style. 13:29 start of climax 15:25 climax of first movement.

If I'm not mistaken, it's fake recapitulation in Eb major fortissimo in 8:33 (letter M), onto pretend recapitulation in A major, triple-forte at 9:04 (letter N), and then finally the formal recapitulation beginning 20 bars later, piano with the woodwinds added, at 9:47. I am a Japanese old boy`s Brucknerian. This solemn and majestic melody encourage my tired mind , This stellar and paramount performance invites me into the wonderful world of comfort Thank-you very much to your excellent and powerful performance from Japan
There is a true Bruckner´s orchestral sound: Some soft beautiful theme coming from the woods, while doble basses turn into disharmony, and, suddenly, you´ll find yourself in the middle of a stormy (main) theme - with all brass climbing onto a -false- fermata . . . And all starts again with innocent variations . . . ! It is a challenge to listeners and - naturallly for interpreters and conductors of the best !
Totally agree. Klemperer invited me into this experience, and now I'm enjoying the excellence of other conductors by simply refusing to assume that there's only ever just one recording that is the "best".
That sustained conclusion is like nothing else. I still prefer the 8th and 9th’s 3rd movements just because of the grand scale they achieve, but this still manages something else entirely.
Wonderful and most appropriate rallentando by Maestro Eschenbach starting at 1:00:01 for the surprise return of the first movement's first theme at the end the Finale, now radiant in a glorious and majestic A Major. Bravo!
The most underrated of Bruckner's masterpieces. And yet its his most original symphony. This with the 9th were the only two symphonies of Bruckner that another Bernstein loved and recorded. Some of the great film score composers for Blockbuster films . In the past Alfred Newman in the past . And the likes of John Williams would of or will tell you how much they are indebited to Bruckner. In this symphony it is fun to suss out some of these. I will give you two for a start . Then try and find some more and you will. The sonata form second movement's main theme is the main theme for Alfred Newman's " Song of Benadette" Nine minutes into the opening movement think of the main theme of Maurice Jarre's " Lawrence of Arabia" And carry on from there. The second movement is near heaven for me. BUT with the chorale coda of the first movement with more than thirty modulations we are into Bach territory. What does amuse me is that Hans Zimmer doesn't rate Bruckner. May I suggest to Mr Zimmer that his finest film score music Chevaliers De Sangreal from " The Da Vinci Code" has more than a resemblance to some of Bruckner's final notes he composed before dying without completing his 9th symphony. The minimalism before the coda we hear in the completed versions.
This is a great performance. I once saw Karajan conduct Bruckner's 5th in the 1980s which was magisterial and this is as good if not better. Eshenbach has a powerful but restrained conducting technique that can be so subtle. The church is the ideal venue for Bruckner.Lucky audience.
To me, this and the Third are the most immediately accessible and ingratiating of Bruckner's symphonies; I can't understand why the Sixth is considered by many to be atypical and inferior. It somehow seems more relaxed, less profound than, say, the Fourth or Seventh, but still full of life and meaning. The 'adagio' has the sweetest and loveliest of melodies, but then the whole score reflects some of Bruckner's finest inspirations. Conductor Eschenbach presents the music beautifully, as does the Orchestra. Sometimes I've found his view of a score to be somewhat turgid, but not here.
The heart of this symphony is the adagio ,and its every bit as profound as I can possibly imagine. Its also deeply..sensual..I think it indicates a strong sense of longing, unrequited love and unfulfilled existence. Its truly achingly beautiful and nostalgic music. It rips your chore apart. Yeah, Bruckner was a ROMANTIC!
In my opinion, the 6th's Scherzo and Finale are not as convincing as its first two movements which are wonderful. Despite some enchanting passages, the Scherzo seems like a dream of unrelated musical images passing by and the Finale is ever so disjointed with its jerking stops and starts. Bruckner's next symphony, the Seventh in E Major, balanced his inspiration out well among its four movements, as posterity's testimony to its popularity indicates. Alas, the 6th appears destined to always remain a select wine for certain devotees of the composer that included Leonard Bernstein, as it is one of only two Bruckner symphonies that he ever recorded.
There's a lineage that runs through this: A major is the key of Beethoven 7 and Mendelssohn's "Italian", and also of Reger's Sinfonietta, along with Franz Schmidt's First String Quartet, Third Symphony and Quintet for Clarinet, Strings and Piano (Left-Hand).
This performance is consistent to Eschenbach's rendering in his recording with London Philharmonic in 2010, and I like it a lot! There seems to be a minor glitch by the oboist in the coda of second movement (33:05). He added a grace note to the B flat on bar 158 (sounds like a blip of just one octave above, could be just fingering...). It would be negligible if it were other places, but not here, this is the last recall of the main theme, the final touch, specifically written for solo oboe.
There is nothing better than being able to listen to Bruckner‘s symphonies, especially No6, 7, 8, 9 God will be listening this work while smiling . This work and performance are incomparable and exquisite
I counted 30 modulations in the chorale coda in the first movement and stopped counting . This has to be Bruckner's most original symphony and the inspiration for quite a few blockbuster movies. Including Lawrence of Arabia, The Big Country, The Song of Bernadette to name a few.The only disappointment in my opinion is the trouble Bruckner has in getting back to A major in the last movement finale. Bur not every finale coda can give you the goose pimples of say the 3rd, fifth or 8th.
For me the final coda of the 4th gives me the most goose pimples and simply makes my body shudder.( Inbal conducting the 4th with this great Frankfurt orchestra on You Tube) . By the way this performance of the 6th is terrific.
I wish that the engineers had set up a pair of M150's in wide A-B out in the free field (say, 14 feet above the first row of audience seating) and mixed that in with all their modern close-miked manipulation.
Was, welche Teile oder welche Aspekte finden Sie denn langweilig?
race wief ggl translation I do not know how others are concerned, but: The camera movements through the church and the audience I find disturbing, just as an orchestral view of one or the other place at an angle would be nice (instead of camera movement, for example). It has become better (but not without exception), that in fact the musicians are in the picture, who are also playing something audible.
Wonderful performance, but... the cathedral acoustics don't help, and neither does Eschenbach's jerking around with the tempi (last example just after: 59:57 )
günter wand is to me far the best interprete of bruckner, all other often are too slow, too fast or playing with the sound (bruckner is maybe no romantic, although Schumann was a contemporary) At Eschenbach the cornets sounding too romantic i think

You are so right, I always thought this. I think bruckner generally was a big inspiration on movie theme tunes.
The flute player is an attractive young lady.
It's Clara Andrada de la Calle
I can't imagine how music sounds in the cathedral...
Cup your hands behind your ears while you listen to good speakers. You'll be surprised. :)
@@willy1486 I see. I'll try that later. Thank you for your reply!
That great timpanist really nailed that last note at the end of the first movement!!! 16:04
Very good. And a remarkable church. Is it part of Kloster Eberbach?
sublime!
13:29 -
21:55 - 26:23 - 30:06
47:27 - 56:33 - 57:35
Bravo!
nice!
I think to begin with Bruckner, the 6th is the best. As Dvorak with the same number.
13:53 - eine andere Dimension wird geöffnet
Merkwürdig. Ich habe das immer genauso empfunden!
15:25 - 1:00:00
GREAT
Sorry, I don't know German language. Are you saying that this performance is enthralling or quite boring?
Sorry, the latter.
I get it
Was, welche Teile oder welche Aspekte finden Sie denn langweilig?
race wief ggl translation I do not know how others are concerned, but: The camera movements through the church and the audience I find disturbing, just as an orchestral view of one or the other place at an angle would be nice (instead of camera movement, for example). It has become better (but not without exception), that in fact the musicians are in the picture, who are also playing something audible.
Fletcher conducting, Mahler as concert master
21:56 is most tragic
Beatiful
Wonderful performance, but... the cathedral acoustics don't help, and neither does Eschenbach's jerking around with the tempi (last example just after: 59:57 )
13:29
13:53
21:56
Oh yeah!!!! 21:56!!¡!!¡!¡
I can't believe
Is this Tristan ans Isolde Liebestod 48:00
my god .... the slow mvmnt coda .....
I SEE THAT KNOW ONE UNDER 80 WAS ALLOUD AT THIS PERROMANCE
Where is this church?
Eberbach Monastery

47:27 mild und leise
Tempo continuity in the first movement not good.
31:36 There is Furtwangler.
21:56 !!!!!!
Apart from being a world-class bass singer, Rene Pape also plays horn in the FRSO.
Wilson Edward Hernandez William Perez Joseph
günter wand is to me far the best interprete of bruckner, all other often are too slow, too fast or playing with the sound (bruckner is maybe no romantic, although Schumann was a contemporary)
At Eschenbach the cornets sounding too romantic i think
No cornets in this piece - do you mean trumpets?
Gerald Ginther I think he means the french horns..
This performance is excellent with the adagio sounding quite sublime. It's a pity you don't like it, but to each his own.
