I grew up with the great teams of Duffy Daugherty in the 60’s. I was also made aware of his two Rose Bowl winning teams in the 50’s. Even the pre big ten teams of Biggie Munn were renowned for their tremendous win loss percentage. I attended MSU and am proud to carry a degree from there. But it is enlightening to know how important the full integration of the 65-66 teams were. They were trailblazers and helped lead the rest of the NCAA to eventual full integration. RIP Hugh “ Duffy” Daugherty. A shout out to all his coaches and players.
MSU football in the '50's & '60's was like the Miami, Fla. 'Canes of the '80's & '90's. The New Thing In Newport, The New Kids On The Block. A colorful, eminently quotable coach, players of color with memorable names, Nat'l Titles, Big Ten Championships, Rose Bowls. East Lansing was new, progressive; Ann Arbor was the status quo : long in the tooth, maybe even stodgy. Truly MSU's first prolonged golden age. 🏉
Great footage, and more than the success on the field, President Hannah and Duffy changed a culture. I was a little kid growing up in East Lansing, and I remember seeing Bubba Smith and George Webster...Gene Washington, Clinton Jones. They were heroes, larger than life.
This is a great American story that needs to be heard. I am proud to be a Spartan.
