When Terry Hanrranty says these two teams were loaded in 1966. And so many wonderful players. The two best teams ever to play against one another.

More players in total went to the pro's from those two teams, if you include the players on the sidelines, that any other college game ever played. Be interested to hear who knows otherwise...

As a Spartan I hate to say this, but the single greatest defensiveplay in Rose Bowl history was probably Bob Stiles of UCLA knocking himself unconscious to keep Bull Apisa out of the end zone. if it were not for that, the 1965-1966 Michigan State Spartans would, justly, be remembered as THE greatest Football Team f the modern era.

Bama was 8-1-1 in 1965 and ranked behind three 10-0-0 teams, lead by Michigan State. When all three teams lost on new Year's Day, the AP held the first poll after the bowl games and voted Alabama #1 even though MSU still had a better record, (they'd been upset by UCLA while Bama had beaten Nebraska). UPI still had the Spartans #1. In 1966, Notre Dame was voted #1, MSU #2 and Alabama #3, despite their 11-0-0 record. For the two eyars, MSU was 19-1-1, Alabama 20-1-1 and Notre Dame 16-2-1..

I'm not saying that a team with Kenny Stabler, Ray Perkins, and ,Dennis Homan on offense and eleven blood thirsty midgets on defense wouldn't have put up a hell of afight; they still would have lost .

@@JHarder1000 I wish ESPN or somebody would do some retro tournaments to show us what a national championship playoff would have looked like in the old days.

Nice to see the Spartans will once again compete for a national championship. This time the big, strong Spartan back got into the end zone!

If it weren't for The Upset and The Tie, they would be recognized as the greatest team, ever.

..stopped dead in his tracks by Bob Stiles - a 185 pound safety - on the 2-point conversion try to preserve UCLA's win in the 1966 Rose Bowl. And that was the -1 in Duffy's 19-1-1 record, by the way.

@@warplanner8852 Stiles'-who was actually 175 pounds was knocked unconscious when he tackled The Bull. Eight minutes later he had to be given smelling salts so he could receive the game ball. Stiles played superbly throughout the game, and it is still considered one of the greatest defensive performances in the history of college ball.

While I have seen better teams than this Michigan State team, in some ways it transcends all others. It was the first team to integrate on such a scale. No Lily White roster, no racial quotas. The Spartan teams of the Mid Sixties literally changed recruiting. And the entire landscape of the College Game. The 1971 Nebraska team and later the 1995 Cornhuskers were both better teams than Michigan State or Notre Dame. No doubt. This MSU team was truly the greatest in the most important way. It changed College Football for the better.

Alabama was the best in 1965-1966. Alabama was National Champions in 1965. In 1966 Alabama was 11-0 and better than #1 Notre Dame who was 9-0-1 and #2 Michigan State who was also 9-0-1.

Still called the game of the Century .... Michigan State 10 and Notre Dame 10. .... State shared or took outright the National titles both years in 1965 and 1966 going 19-1-1 .... tied N.D. and lost to U.C.L.A. 14-12 in the Rose Bowl. ... State with help from Bubba Smith and George Webster had without a doubt one of the absolute best and most disastrous Defenses not only at M.S.U. ... but probably in the history of college football which of course is only MY opinion so its debatable ... lol. .... But it was an incredible game to watch in black and white .... lol.

You have no idea what you're talking about. ND would have stomped on Bama in 1966. Lost starting QB, center, and RB in the MSU game and still came from 10 down to tie with diabetic back up QB who was dehydrated the whole game. Missed makeable FG. MSU played for tie, not ND. Went for it on 4th and 1 from own 30 in final seconds. Bama only escaped Tennessee on miracles at end including missed FG that was a chip shot.

  • @rodmiller6872

How can you say they won back to back? They really didn't win either year. Certainly not in '66 when Duffy played for a tie and then falsely accused ND of doing the same. In 65 they choked in the bowl game.

I don't know what the whoop-la thing is about Black football players. I grew up watching college ball when 99% of the players were white and the games were fantastic..ex: Texas-Arkansas, etc. Wherever you see Black people right away everyone gets into racism. Personally, I don't give a damn if Blacks play or not. Whites invented all the games anyway.. Football, Basketball, baseball...haha. .hey, let the Blacks invent their own sport and they can play it all alone as far as I care....And I never played against a Black in football...they had their own black teams and they were pretty good playing against themselves...so lets focus on the sport and the fun...who cares if the blacks took over to get them out of the ghettos. I don't see them as better than whites.....
