RIP Garry Roberts (June 16, 1950 - November 9, 2022), aged 72
You will always be remembered as a legend.
This beat is seriously giving me chills, pure brilliance.
It’s a real masterpiece.
This song is so relevant today and I am not surprised that it has such relevance. He sang of corrupt politicans mired in history and our 3rd world economy.Wow.
Way ahead. Everywhere I go, everywhere I see
And the kids who danced to this back then grew up and voted the Tories in again just their children wouldn’t feel left out.
Ireland is still d same ruled by corrupt gangsters pilfering at every opportunity ,ironic how things are still d same if not worse.
Well 12 Years and it got even worse or even more relevant.
You do know it's about Irish politics?
Listening to this for the first time in 2022. Brilliant. I love it as well as the video.
One of my favs, never to late to listen to the rats.❤
Wow welcome to the Boomtown rats.
This song was about the Republic of Ireland. The RoI was certainly very backward back then and corrupted by Roman Catholicism. It was until the mid-1990s that the Emerald Isle became divorced from the Catholic Church and it lost control of the Green country. England and Wales, by contrast, threw the Catholic Church out in the 16th century.
Infectious subtlety to this song, brilliant.
Well put
this has got to be one of the best opening of any song
39 Years later......Glad to see the Place again, it´s a pitty nothig´s changed....
This song was about the Republic of Ireland, not the UK. The RoI was certainly very backward back then and corrupted by Roman Catholicism. It was until the mid-1990s that the Emerald Isle became divorced from the Catholic Church and it lost control of the Green country. England and Wales, by contrast, threw the Catholic Church out in the 16th century.
Sadly this is still so apt in 2023. Fab song, brilliant band
Great song! Remember it well from late 1980, aged 7!
Should have many more views, great song.
This song is fuckin' magic...
Bob geldof has me laugh everytime i hear him singing. I love this guy!
I can't really understand why this band has too few views. .. they're great!
because we listen to the vinyl version most of the time
@@Britpop968 And is a West Brit. I try not let that influence the great music this band made.
That's because Bob Geldof is also known for tax evasion!
Because Bob is somewhat a self righteous egoist who thinks he knows better than everyone else. The mere sight of him is enough to turn people off the boomtown rats.
Tax evasion, egoism, blablabla. Geldof=Gold. Never judge by the views, Niki Minaj (hope I spelled it right) has more views than Freddie Mercury. Good stuff is always underrated. ;)
Watching a documentary on the mother and baby homes which the state is about to ignore for good! Brought me to this tune. To remind me that we are backwards in the future and living in the past. Time does not move forward in our country but stands still.
Yes the song was about the Republic of Ireland, not the UK. The RoI was certainly very backward back then and corrupted by Roman Catholicism. It was until the mid-1990s that the Emerald Isle became divorced from the Catholic Church and it lost control of the Green country. England and Wales, by contrast, threw the Catholic Church out in the 16th century.
A timeless song pure class proper 80s
Wow It must be 40 years since I heard this last & what emotions I feel listening to this!!
An absolute awesome tune & so very poetic too!
And like someone else as posted this is a real masterpiece
here for it for a first time listen in 2024 - the set for the video is wild
The BTR did some quality stuff later on. Elephant's Graveyard was superb too. They were underrated, no doubt about it.
vordman Like my favourite band ie The Human League. And m8 I have seen the Human League play live 16 times now
And I have been lucky Enough to have met my idiols ie The Human League and 5times in Joanne Catheralls case and 4times in Susan Sulley's case. from Paul Eyles from Portsmouth
And the Ska House on Fire which is criminally ignored
Great song from a great band
I can’t remember exactly how old I was when this was in the charts but it evokes a lot of memories.
December 1980
@@Paul-11 My first job then.
@@nicedog1 Then ‘ Elephants Graveyard ‘ January 1981, remember that ? . My works experience. Lived for radio & TOTP 😂
@@Paul-11 Same here. The Police, Ultravox, Duran Duran and Visage were all in the charts around that time plus plenty of others of course.
@@nicedog1 I just got the Police’s Ghost in the machine album cd. My first girlfriend had the albums and I’m remembering the songs again. It’s amazing what music/ bands songs triggers the memories we had at the time. Joe Dolce, Midge never lived it down all these years later 😂
Never saw this video clip till today on ABC-TV "Rage". Love the clip.
such a sharp and subtle song... classic
Remember Gay Byrne getting very upset by this?
@@FFM0594 they don't have enough views
@@FFM0594Yes,but it was written in response to him interviewing Bob Geldof months before. The song was about the Republic of Ireland, not the UK. The RoI was certainly very backward back then and corrupted by Roman Catholicism. It was until the mid-1990s that the Emerald Isle became divorced from the Catholic Church and it lost control of the Green country. England and Wales, by contrast, threw the Catholic Church out in the 16th century.
@@Candolad I know, I lived there at that time.
for some strange reason i love this band
1977-1982
Not really strange at all ..they have some good stuff...
One of the classic tunes playing in the Topman radio
This and Rat Trap = Boomtown Rats' best.
Loved this song growing up...such a groove
Brilliant song from the boomtown rats 🐀
This song was released in late 1980 early 1981
I saw this music video on reeling in the years '81
Taken from their album coco bongo that they released in 1981
Great song from the early 80s
In the 80s recession ireland was a banana republic and it was definitely a septic isle
It was a perfect song that describes the 1980s recession down to a fine art 🎨 😍
Brilliant track
My favourite Boomtown Rats song. 😘
Yep. Their best imo. Great memories from what seems like a lifetime ago.
@@colingeddes2172 It was a lifetime ago. It's now 2024 and 44 years ago since it was released.
@@Candolad more like 46 years ago ah!!!
Some things will never change.
One of the 1st singles I bought.
top tune, very relevant today, met bob once at a boxing show had a joke with him, he surely is a genuis , nice one bob, up the irish
The song is about Ireland...
yes but a long time ago.Ireland is much different modern now.
Nope it's about the USA today
+dazza the Irish hard left would not agree...
Oh Dazza, for a moment there, I thought you weren't being sarcastic... he he
Yes yes and yes! Still asked if your child is baptized on National School applications in 2018 Sept. 90% of Irish schools are still roman catholic. The banana rep of Ireland still doin its tang baby!
great song
Happy birthday Bob God bless
Love this song.
It sucks
@@gigapot9151 Orr, saucy, sucks, LOL!!!!
Lyrics: Banana Republic, Boomtown Rats.
Banana Republic
Septic Isle
Screaming in the Suffering sea
It sounds like crying
Everywhere I go
Everywhere I see
The black and blue uniforms
Police and priests
And I wonder do you wonder
While you're sleeping with your whore
That sharing beds with history
Is like a-licking running sores
Forty shades of green yeah
Sixty shades of red
Heroes going cheap these days
Price; a bullet in the head
Banana Republic
Septic Isle
Suffer in the Screaming sea
It sounds like dying
Everywhere I go
Everywhere I see
The black and blue uniforms
Police and priests
Take your hand and lead you
Up a garden path
Let me stand aside here
And watch you pass
Striking up a soldier's song
I know that tune
It begs too many questions
And answers too
Banana Republic
Septic Isle
Suffer in the Screaming sea
It sounds like dying
Everywhere I go
Everywhere I see
The black and blue uniforms
Police and priests
The purple and the pinstripe
Mutely shake their heads
A silence shrieking volumes
A violence worse than the condemn
Stab you in the back yeah
Laughing in your face
Glad to see the place again
It's a pity nothing's changed
Banana Republic
Septic Isle
Suffer in the Screaming sea
It sounds like dying
Everywhere I go
Everywhere I see
The black and blue uniforms
Police and priests
Great song

En pleno 2022 sigue viva esta canción Banana Republic
This is a masterpiece of pop music.

The rats had something to say unlike some of the other punk bands at the time the use of a reggae beat was inspired and similar to other bands like the police and the clash🇬🇧
Great quirky song

Cath Harris me too.
Frank Cusack god bless em
Same here. This Song Reminiszenz me of my dad.always cracked the Radio up when it came out in Late 1980.Hasn't lost any of its impact 42 Years later

Song about westminster
So relevant today as the UK enters full-on Banana Republic status
Bet you won't be rushing to leave though.
you aint a saint but pretty near it. Thank you for all the work you have done and are doing. x
So underrated 🔺🔴
swietny videoclip oraz super piosenka oraz wspanialy zespol the boomtown rats
Anybody now where the original video of "Someone lokking at you", where there are tons of suvalience cameras can be found? Watched it here few years ago, but can't find it now.. :(
I can’t remember seeing that, all I can say I’ve seen it on TOTP & Kenny Everett only. Super Trouper Abba was Number 1 Tide is high Blondie Number 2 and this Number 3 ....good days.
Bob Geldof is fuckin' fantastic
Happy birthday bob
The best they have done in my humble opinion! Who is here in 2023??? 😀
One of their records i liked
boomtown rats one of the best
Especially relevant to Ireland today.
Geldof writes like a cranky dreamer who is unafraid to tell the truth. It was reading his autobiography that made me volunteer in Oxfam.
Rip Gary Roberts
Boomtown Rats had top 30 his from 1977-1982 a bit like the The Jam
and Blondie
Still good 😀
Long a go .......
moj najlepši spomin na mojo največjo ljubezen Andrejo stil lov yo Andrej
The song is about Ireland but can represent any politically unstable country.... but I’ve always loved this since it’s release.
Indonesia during Soeharto’s era
Definitely - waaaaayy too accurate depiction of the Haughey years in particular!
please thank you
Bob Geldof
There's nothing like a song sponsored by a multi corporate organisation, YE HAAA!
2021 USA
@Markboom1000 Not sure where you got your info from but this song got to number 3 on 30th November 1980 and it wa Abba at 1 and Kim Wilde at 2. It was only at Number 3 for 1 week. By the time St Winifred's School Choir got to Number 1 it had gone down to 11
Loved this guy and bandn he's done good things, hes also passed over to the dark side. the eliteist.
Yes.
Age and wealth caused that possibly
Don't mix words, he's turned into a twat!
The first 45 single I purchased. This is the b side to " I don't like Mondays "
Boom Town Rats.. Any body know similar bandor name... LEGENDS..
Here's to you, Singapore.
I still have Lightfoot, Dylan, Neil Young and Cohen. Thanks for asking!!
Nearly 10 years after you put up that comment Liam Blood . It's a pity nothing's changed .Jon
more aktuel than ever!!!
2013, it's a pity nothings changed....
Has now
sums up ireland these days..
That is a disgrace, Ireland has been held back by police priests and politicians and corrupt business, lost another generation and its youth will leave once again
80 music so much better than today's shit.
wrote an essay in English for this back in the day
