- The Boomtown Rats performing at Live Aid in front of 72,000 people in Wembley Stadium, London on the 13th July, 1985. The event was organised by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine disaster. Broadcast across the world via one of the largest satellite link-ups of all time, the concerts were seen by around 40% of the global population.

Personally I dislike it when people cheer and applause because it's kind of disrespectful to Brenda Ann Spencer's victims. Yes, the song was written after the shooting she committed, and yes, this song has sadly overtime become removed from its origins.

Bob is a such a survivor. Nobody should have experienced the tragedy he has endured. One of the most important personalities of our generation. One day he infuriates me, the next I wanna hug him and thank him for being an inspiration. God bless him.
Boomtown Rats deserved a crazy ovation. The co-founder of the entire Live Aid project (yes I know everyone knows that). He is so incredibly awesome.
Aside from the real life tragedy that influenced the writing of this song,from an artists perspective,i dont think it gets any more intense than this....thousands of people singing along with your song and at the end when you let them sing the last line,they all do. That buzz from the energy and the rush of the crowd would probably make me cry from overwhelming gratitude.

It was Bob who actually busted his ass to put Live Aid together with that chubby producer (I forget his name). Midge helped him immensely with the single, no doubt. But, Live Aid was Bob's brain child. Yes, he could have been more appreciative of Midge, but Bob worked non stop for months to put this together - so yes, he deserves so much of the adulation.

Norman Winter, Michael's press agent, even stepped in and pleaded with Michael to perform at live Aid, telling him it could do damage to his reputation if he refuses.
However, Michael still turned it down, which earned him a few snipes and sneers by Society at large.

"I know.. what could be more major than Live Aid? ..But Michael couldn't turn his back on his responsibility to the people he's working with. I watched the entire event whilst babysitting my niece. And I cried a lot. "Drive" by the Cars never failed to reduce me to tears after it featured on Live Aid accompanying a harrowing video. Love him or loathe him, Bob G got off his rear and did something remarkable.
Drive was well chosen as the song to accompany the video showed on the screen at Wembley. An amazing day.

This show was broadcast on MTV the day before my birthday. I couldn’t sit still knowing this show was coming. The BEST birthday present anyone could ask for. SIMPLY AWESOME !!! Thanks Bob for organizing this, making history, and helping so many.
A lot of people would argue that if anyone else had been a part of making Live Aid, the Rats wouldn't have even been on, let alone a 20 minute spot. But I think on the day, Bob and the Rats were just about as big as anybody else, because people just wanted to see Bob.

I don't know about the performers but I know as a teenager at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, it felt like an important moment that I should try to imprint on my memory. There was so much happening between the concert at Wembley, the concert in Philly and all the acts televised from around the world, it would have been easy to forget we were there to support a vital cause, but for the stream of celebrities showing up on stage to make impassioned pleas for everyone watching to give until it hurt. Because we'd all seen the pictures of the children starving and knew They were hurting even while we were at this historic concert.

Growing up, I was never aware of the story behind this song, but I was always grateful for it, since the lyrics can also be perceived as highly evocative of mental health struggles in general. At the time, there was really no material in the popular culture that addressed things like depression.
Got to hand to Bob this is one of the most moving performances ever and that line 'The lesson today is how to die' followed by the silence , thought provoking , spine chilling incredible.
That moment at 3:05 when he sings "The lesson today is how to die" then simply pauses, letting that sink in. Geldof was and is a great showman and humanitarian, doing what he could to help those starving in Ethiopia. No, the money didn't make it to the people dying for want of food and clean water because of corruption, but he and so many others freaking TRIED. You can see it in his performance here - his back was killing him, he was in such pain, but damned if he was going to miss the greatest show of his life.

It resonates with me a lot. When I hear these tragedies in the news I often struggle to immediately digest it.
The truly amazing thing in 1985 was that I was able to hear "Live Aid" on the radio. I lived in the mountains of Upstate NY and we didn't have cable or OTA tv, but we did have FM Radio!
You guys even if Bob Geldof's voice is rough that doesn't mean that the performance is bad. In fact it completely fits with his usual style and the cynical tone of the song. Many praised singers don't have a clear angelic voice, like Brian Johnson and Kurt Cobain for example. Or even Neil Young, who purposefully sings slightly out of tune cause it's his style.
And shame on those who say that The Boomtown Rats didn't belong on that stage with the many other great bands. Their songs are catchy and meaningful, and they definitely pass on a strong energy to the audience. It's sad that the band is so underrated.

Haşim Golar a lot of people have a problem with Geldof. He’s built a career by exploiting serious problems for his own self-aggrandizement. If he truly cared about third world hunger he would have followed up after the show, instead of allowing millions of dollars to get into the hands of the same warlords who created the famine. These warlords purchased arms and blocked the roads through which food and supplies could be shipped. He’s been criticized about this for years and usually just responds with a slew of insults and profanities. I think Geldof helped spark the unfortunate trend of “virtue signaling” foundations and charities that prey upon the emotions (and dollars) of the general public in order to enrich themselves, when they SHOULD be lobbying government officials and building coalitions of wealthy donors to enact radical policy changes. Instead he just gets up on stage and sings (badly) and bathes himself in the attention. granted there were some good performances at Live Aid (Queen and U2 of course) but the whole endeavor reeks of 80’s white guilt and naivety.
You should do some research, the whole thing was midge ure's idea and when he was approaching artists to get them on board he spoke geldof and good old Bob stole the idea and froze midge out. Geldof hadn't had a hit for ages and he used the live aid thing to restart his ailing career. He has never credited midge for his idea and has got very wealthy of the back of others giving their time for free. Midge on the other hand has always been very dignified about the whole thing. Don't make the mistake of thinking geldof is a good guy, he isn't, Bob geldof only puts himself out for one person, Bob geldof.

Bob and the boomtown rats were part of the punk movement of the 70s. The punk movement and rebellion came from a place of passion. That same passion that created so many epic songs and albums from so many wonderful people is exactly what drove Bob and Midge Ure to Live Aid. Passion, not filling out a million forms and toeing the line as today's world seems to have become. Passion gave the world colour, vibrancy. The beurocrats just make everything black and white.
This is the first time I've listened to this "song". Sounds like a Jim Steinman faux operatic opus. A regular guy would wince if he had to sing something like this overblown vaudeville ditty.
I don't think it's got anything to do with bureaucrats. There was as much bureaucracy in the 80s as there is now. It's the young people that have changed, there's hardly any rebellion left in them. Life's too comfy and when you spend 80% of your free time on your mobile phone, looking at things that the algorythms suggest you should watch, you lock yourself into commercialism. You don't want to change the world, you want the new iPhone, so instead of doing something meaningful you do something stupidly outrageous on RUclips to get money from the views. People toe the line because they have allowed themselves to become slaves to marketing algorithms, not because of anything the government has done. Commercialism has won.

Sir Bob Geldof is a brilliant humanitarian & "The Fine Art of Surfacing" is an awesome album... It remains one of my favorites from 1979... The Boomtown Rats made a serious mark on the music of the time... They are a gift from Ireland... And this song was quite popular... the sad thing is that after all this time the news of students shooting up schools has become a regular event... at the time it was unusual...

it was........one of the most memorable days in my life. rats were epic as were so many others. todays music is poor by comparison, we've lost so much.
I wish i saw it but I was only born in 98', i remember the first time i watched it on dvd when i was like 5 and ive loved queen and this song ever since. Even on dvd it was magical, I wish there was events like this now. The thing is theres so many charities asking for money everyday, you give them a fiver or whatever on occasion and go about your day, and it probably goes toward the CEO's salary, there nothing magical about that. Also the music just isnt the same anymore. I think the One love concert was good, coldplay and liam Gallagher were great and made the concert in my opinion, still nothing on Queen though!

I think the beauty in it is that it's not an all out protest song like they could easily have written. It tackles the topic softly rather than attacking the person and focuses on the effect these shootings have on other innocent people.

I met him in a pub in the West End. Even though he was probably exhausted from organising the show, he was humble and friendly. A pop star that turned out to be a great leader!
As I taped this on my VHS, this was about 9:30am in the US...great day. Great memories from that day.

I was lucky enough to to be there, and this was one of the most amazing things to happen, along with U2 and of course Queen, thank you Bob for one of the most memorable moments of my life.

One day in 1985 Bob wakes up and turns the tele on to see a humanitarian crisis unfolding in front of him. At this point the Rats are no longer considered relevent and compared to many, his is a small voice.
Through perseverence and force of will he gathers together the musical royalty of his day. From all over the world. To come together in a single generation defining moment.
This is the moment one man literally made a difference. Without Bob, literally tens of thousands of people wouldnt have lived to see 1986.

Midge ure had far more to do with the writing of band aid. Geldofs idea but Midge ure even had to tell Geldof to stfu as he was interfering with the writing and recording of band aid.
Midge wrote Do they know.. Bob wrote just a few lyrics.

Totally agree Caroline. I was 19yrs old at the time watching this with my Mum and my brothers on Mums birthday. Sadly she’s no longer with us and it remains one of the best days of my life.
Absolutely. The song has since hit home after every school massacre and highlights how deranged one must be to perpetrate attacks like that. It's still relevant today. At least they followed it up with an upbeat song.

There are so many great 70-early 80 you lose them. I watch a old “House” episode and he tinkled the piano part and it brings this out of the webs of my mind.
This song is fucking brilliant. All the lyrics have a dark meaning yet so powerful , the piano is immense. Incredibly well written song, what a fucking tune.

Brilliant performance. This song hits home on so many levels, especially in the face of a tragedy and when Geldof stops after “lesson today is HOW TO DIE!” was intended to help regarding the famine.
