That's because his other half in the movie - James Caan won it. They should have been nominated as a team or figured out how to give them a tie - because they both deserved it. I cry every time I hear the Theme to the Movie - It was probably my first ugly cry movie as a kid watching TV in the 70s.
The very simple, "I love Brian Piccolo" made me cry like a baby when I first saw this movie and it still makes me cry. I can only imagine how many people in the audience that night were sobbing inconsolably too.
Tony Wise I didn't know Sayers passed away. I hope he and Piccolo are tossing a ball back and forth where they are and I get the chance to watch. Like you I was a kid, a girl to be more specific, but I loved football and I still do. A few months ago, I was returning to see my Orthopedic surgeon who had put another piece of hardware in my back, and I had one of the 2 jerseys on. He walked into my exam room and we spent most of that time talking about Sayers and Piccolo, he added Payton into the mixture. I must have had my Sayers jersey on. I rarely wore them because I didn't want anything to happen to them. I had a shirt on underneath the jersey and I almost took the jersey off and handed it to him that day but I didn't. I had to come back a couple of months later to see him. I had done a lot of thinking since that previous checkup, I kept those jerseys hanging, covered by white plastic bags. I finally decided that I was going to make him a very happy man. So when he came in, he sat down, (he's cool) and before we talked much about my back, I handed him the white sack with the hangers sticking out and told him that there was nobody in my family that would know the history of the jerseys, and I wasn't going to sell them on ebay. I knew what they meant to him, so I told him that it's somewhat frowned upon to give your doctors presents, I told him that I wanted him to be a steward of those 2 jerseys, and when the time comes that he needs them to be handed down, I want him to give them to someone else who knew about them. Those two men deserve to always be remembered.
Only seen my dad cry a few times, and one of those times was during this scene when he showed me this movie. His best friend that he played ball with in college died of cancer when he was only 30, so it definitely hits home for him
My dad was a tough and rugged man that worked at the shipyard for 38 years. The only two times I ever seen him cry was when his dad died and Brian Piccolo died in this movie. I remember as a young man, in the 1970’s, watching this movie with him and seeing him wiping his eyes from the tears. I didn’t quite know what to think of it. Pop, I sure do miss you☹️
I saw BRIAN'S SONG when I was 14. like millions of others, I bawled my eyes out at the end. It left a HUGE impression on me. And to this day, 50 years later, whenever anyone asks me which one of seven kids I am, I reply without hesitation: "I'm like Gayle Sayers; I am third." And I smile. I'm a white middle class Jesus following conservative military mom, and proud of it. So I love everybody. Like Jesus. Thank you for posting this.
This moment was my father's favorite part of the movie. You used to tell me stories about it making him cry. I never believed it until the day I saw it. Sadly earlier this year he passed away. I miss you Dad so much.

I only saw my dad cry once. That was when we watched Brian’s Song together. I will never forget it. I cry every time I watch the movie or think about him. He was my football hero. Butkus was great, but Piccolo was the man. My daughter was a soccer star because she learned the same lesson Brian Piccolo knew.. takes the heart of a giant.
My Dad was a tough guy Sailor. But I remember seeing him holding back tears as our family M&D, my 2 younger brothers and I watched it. He passed away last month and I couldn't help thinking about him back then. As they played Taps for him I bawl like a baby.
This is a perfect example of how we all should treat one another. Best tv movie ever made, ever. Tearjerker When Billie Dee Williams says, "I love Brian Piccolo." and the music plays, I start crying every time.
I am, and I'm not a football fan. Growing up in Denmark I never learned to appreciate this sport even though I have lived here for a long time and was married to an American. However, I loved the movie "Brian's Song". Gale Sayers seems to call on the best in all of us.
First thing I thought of when I heard the news. He played before my time, but I remember watching this movie as a little girl. One of the all time greats.
@Michael Williams You know who he meant. In the movie the actor was Billie Dee Williams, but in the movie the character he played was Gayle Sayers. So technically he was right.
I remember watching this movie when I was a young man. It says it all about love & respect. Whether on the gridiron or in your everyday life, these two men came to love & respect each other on & off the field. If they can do it while playing a kids game, why can't we do it in real life?
The fact he made the pro football HOF when he only played 68 regular season games speaks volumes of how good he was.he also won the rushing title in 1966 over Jim Brown while playing for some bad bears teams. A relative of mine says Sayers was the best Back he has ever seen.
Best tv movie ever made! Great story, acting, and music! Billy Dee Williams and James Caan are simply great in this and make the real-life story even more memorable.

These two saw eachother as equals, as teammates, as brothers. That is the beauty and camaraderie we develop as ball players. Thats what transcends the game. I hope Gale and Pic are talking shit to eachother right now, somewhere on that immaculate gridiron, running a 40 to see who still has it! Thats what my brothers and I still do to this day! God love #41 Brian Piccolo and #40 Gale Sayers!
The human soul knows no boundaries and this old gem proves it iIam not a sports fan but this movie had something that went way beyond that. Can definitely pull tears from men like me.
I was just a kid, watching the Bears on Sunday afternoons after dinner at my grandparents. When I saw this movie I was a devastated11 year old girl. I was probably 9 when I first watched the 2 guys play. Besides their ability to make moves that never seemed possible, I was so impressed by them, but I also laughed at Piccolo's name. I thought that was hilarious, but then he wasn't playing. I never knew what happened to him, whether he was injured or anything, I had no clue, not until I saw the movie on tv. I cried and cried. People didn't know how deep their friendship truly was. Gale was quiet at first, but Piccolo forced him to loosen up. Brian helped get Gale get back into shape after his knee injury so that he could win that position back again. Unfortunately, Gale couldn't fix Brian. All that Sayers could do was visit him in the hospital. They were closer than brothers.
Can't count the times I've seen this film during since its premiere nearly 46 years ago (which I also saw, at 12 years old). It has made me cry, every time.
So powerful when this movie came out. For those that don't know, it was made for TV. But the reaction and impact it had was so great, that they re-released in the theaters also for people that had missed it. There were no DVR's in 1971. Great ,great movie. Still makes me cry and i've seen it dozens of times.
Excellent movie that will never be able to be remade as good. Your heart is made out of stone if you don't feel emotional at all watching this. I am not sure which scene is more emotional. At the point he talks about Brian or in the locker room when he tells the team he is very sick. Just as good today, as when it came out!
Just watched this after hearing about Gale Sayer’s passing. I am in tears just like when I saw this movie as a kid. We don’t have this kind of emotion in shows anymore; too much raw emotion in everyday life.
I have the movie "Brian's Song" and remember watching it on TV. Very touching story of their friendship and Brian's illness. Billy Dee Williams and James Caan both did a great job in portraying Gale and Brian.
The magical season of '65 -- a rookie who scored 16 touchdowns (in 14 games) -- still a record 55 years later. That year my parents took me to Wrigley Field for an October game -- end zone seats. The Kansas Comet fielded the opening kickoff right in front of us and zigged, zagged and cut like a diamond instrument through 100+ yards for a TD. At age 9, I was so fortunate to have that visual memory for the rest of my life.
Was that when Greenbay was still a juggernaut? I ask because I read they never made the playoffs and they had one of the greatest linebackers too, Dick Butkus.

I was 12 years old when I watched this movie with my Dad,Mom and sister. I cried watching it and my sister laughed at me and my Dad told me it was because I had heart ❤. I still get emotional over movies and dramas even if they are sad, happy one's or they remind me of something. My youngest son Ricky does the same thing. I have never forgot this movie, since it was so sad and over the years everything I have gone through and things I have seen and heard of I have understood 😔 everything in this world 🌎. The good, the bad and the ugliest. I care about so many things, so many people, but yet out there noone cares about me. Thank you for letting me care so much and having heart ❤. Even if over all these years my heart was broken 💔 😢 alot. God bless 🙏 you.

Cue the tissues at the 1:27 mark when the music fades in and just before he says "I love Brian Piccolo". The only movie where it's cool for grown men to cry. Bawled like a baby when I first saw this at age 14, and get choked up watching this even now.
According to Gale Sayers's book, Piccolo called Sayers after he heard that speech and said to him, "If you were here, I'd kiss you." Sayers laughed and replied, "Glad I'm not there, then."
He has a heart of a giant...courage 24 hours a day every day of his life...you flatter me...Brian Piccolo is the man of courage who should receive this award. Mine tonight, Brian Piccolo's tomorrow...I love Brian Piccolo, and I'd like all of you to love him too...And tonight, please hit your knees and ask God to love him. What a glorious going home party for the real Brian Piccolo!
I was in tears, I remember only being a child but I knew how important this movie was, to me, and to everyone that watched that night, it was a very special time, Brian's Song even the music, is spectacular.😢😑
This is by far the tops of my favorite movies. Every time I watch it, i cry. I like how at the end of the movie, it is said, "It's not how he died, it's how he lived." I often say when doing a funeral that there are two dates on the tombstone, the birth date and the death date. I say do not focus on those dates, but focus on the "dash" in between, because that is how that person lived their life.
Pastor Jeremiah from Turning Point church brought me here. His sermon today refers to the love Gayle Sayers expressed for Brian Piccolo. I remember watching the movie years ago but had forgotten about it. Seeing the clip now caused tears to flow. Beautiful movie.
I was 9 years old when this movie came out. I grew up a bears fan. My father took me to the Bears training camp in Rensselaer Indiana. St. Joseph College. So many great memories
I hope that's true because I'm old enough to remember Brian Piccolo and every word Gale Sayers says in that speech is true. Today is the anniversary of the TV airing of Brian's Song, November 30th 1971. When you think of your grandfather just remember what is said at the end of the movie, Brian Piccolo died at age 26 leaving behind a wife and three daughters, but ohh how he lived!!
I love the scene where Gale and Brian were running through the park. They finished their run when they arrived at a refreshment stand, and then they bought two beers.
I saw this movie when it first came out, and I cried like a baby, and then the next day at school, I had to watch it seven times in succession, and I cried every time. this had to be the saddest movie of all time, brian was only 24 when he died, leaving behind a wife and three daughters aged 5, 4 and 2. I am sure he is still watching over his widow joy and his daughters from heaven
The Bears give out the Brian Piccolo award every year to one rookie and one veteran that best exemplify the spirit of Brian Piccolo.
I sure hope it isn't Caleb this year. He is the furthest example of Brian
Billy Dee should have won the Emmy for this scene alone. If you don’t cry at this scene, you’re not human.

One African-American woman in same office as myself. Her and Her Husband were great friends to me. I really miss them, since I retired in 2000.
Amen. . .
Go see them. Amen.
Diana.. I know you probably won't see this and you don't know me.. But your message moved me.. Please know I care about you even though I don't know you.. You are a fellow human being.. If I could give you a hug I would.. Jeff
Thank you so much. That means a lot to me.

You're very welcome Diana.. Sending you hugs
Brings on the tears, that's for sure. God Bless Brian!!!! sad ending to a young man.
Cue the tissues at the 1:27 mark when the music fades in and just before he says "I love Brian Piccolo". The only movie where it's cool for grown men to cry. Bawled like a baby when I first saw this at age 14, and get choked up watching this even now.
last 90 seconds, one long take.....great acting.....
1:31 "I love Brian Piccolo. And I like all of you to love him too." 😢
According to Gale Sayers's book, Piccolo called Sayers after he heard that speech and said to him, "If you were here, I'd kiss you." Sayers laughed and replied, "Glad I'm not there, then."
Get's me teary eyed every time! Saw it 1st on TV premier when I was in the fourth grade.
I haven’t seen Brian’s Song since I was a kid, I need to watch it again.
As I write this, I’m taking a break from “Brian’s Song 1971” here on YT.
Best scene in movie history
It is physically impossible to watch this scene w/o shedding some tears. Their story/friendship was one of the greatest of all-time.
Pastor Jeremiah from Turning Point church brought me here. His sermon today refers to the love Gayle Sayers expressed for Brian Piccolo. I remember watching the movie years ago but had forgotten about it. Seeing the clip now caused tears to flow. Beautiful movie.
The music gets you EVERY time!!
Simply the Greatest Sports story Ever !!!
I cry like a fool every time.
I was 9 years old when this movie came out. I grew up a bears fan. My father took me to the Bears training camp in Rensselaer Indiana. St. Joseph College. So many great memories
I forgot how magnificent this speech is.
RIP Gale, Pic was really glad to see you.
It just doesn't get any better than this.
I'm 57 years old. This brings me to tears everytime. I grew up a Chicago bears fan
Thank you for posting, he will never be forgotten. Wake Forrest is 20 miles from me and I remember this.
fantastic movie
I hope that's true because I'm old enough to remember Brian Piccolo and every word Gale Sayers says in that speech is true. Today is the anniversary of the TV airing of Brian's Song, November 30th 1971. When you think of your grandfather just remember what is said at the end of the movie, Brian Piccolo died at age 26 leaving behind a wife and three daughters, but ohh how he lived!!
If you saw the movie, you cried.
I love the scene where Gale and Brian were running through the park. They
finished their run when they arrived at a refreshment stand, and then they bought
two beers.
Crying my eyes out right now
