I own a Model S 90D (Nov 2015; 325,000 KMs). Got an email from Tesla that the fuse of the main battery had to be replaced. Brought it into the Lisbon Tesla service center. They broke a bolt of the fuse box. Out of an abundance of caution Tesla replaced my complete battery for free after 8.5 years and over 200k miles. That’s what I call customer service.

Bought a 2016 (new nose) S 90D with 100k miles in January for $16,500 after $4k rebate. In April Tesla replaced the entire battery pack under warranty, so I spent $1,800 to bring the car up to latest FSD / Entertainment specs (both screens, etc).

I don't know what the previous owner did to kill the battery at 100k miles, but the range seemed kind of short, and then two months after I bought it, it just refused to start. The Tesla used market is the best kept secret. The aging rubric for EVs is not the same as ICE. But sellers don’t understand that…..a 100k miles on a Tesla is nothing….vehicle is just getting started towards 300-400k miles. On an ICE especially with turbos, that’s a ticking time bomb.

    • @davidbrayshaw3529

The Tesla used market isn't the best kept secret at all. It's what's scaring a lot of potential buyers off buying new Tesla's, myself included. The depreciation on these is frightening.
I'm in Australia. You can buy a 4 year old Tesla model 3 long range with barely any miles on it for a bit under half of what they retailed for, and they were expensive, here ($60k USD.)
They're an excellent used car buy but you'd have to be either uber rich or a mug to buy one new.

The same with ICE cars Rambo, 160,000 km (100,000 miles) is nothing these days. Look after an ICE car properly and you can drive it for life. There’s an old bloke in our town with his own delivery business. He has been using his old diesel VW Caddy van for years and years. It hit 560,000 km (360,000 miles) a year ago same day as his 70th birthday and he’s still running around 5 or 6 days a week in it. And your perception of turbo charging is incorrect, almost all engines these days are turbocharged and have been for donkeys years.

The new price of Tesla’s has dropped a lot and they are significantly better, which is why second hand older Tesla’s have depreciated significantly.
But the depreciation on a current model3 will be much less.
Also when the penny drops that any Tesla with hardware 3.0 has the potential to drive itself anywhere hands free with the most recent software update(see you tube v 12.4.1) the price will start appreciating

    Why Iwon't buy a $12K Tesla Model S
    - there is NO warranty, you putting $15K out there on a game of "Russian Roulette". If the battery IS gone, you might as well have burned your money. Elon won't care.
    - there is NO service. Garages won't touch a Tesla, and *Tesla* is VERY expensive and slow to get around to your car.
    - there are no aftermarket shops. An aftermarket battery *might* be possible, but Elon would probably sue your a** off if you tried
Tesla remains a rich man's car. Nothing particularly wrong with that, it's full of content and is a true luxury car and is "pushing the envelope". But Tesla (even the Model 3) is not going to bring about global adoption of EVs at THIS price point. The EV revolution requires a full ecosystem - resales, aftermarket parts, aftermarket warranties, charging, etc. STILL ISN'T HAPPENING.
(In the meantime, Ford, GM, et al are busy pricing US consumers out of the car market, which may lead to the APPEARANCE of EVs replacing ICE).

First off, it's not a $100K BEV it might have been at one point, but those days are long gone because even the new MS sell for $73K. The average person isn't going to do all those repairs themselves, and labor is always the biggest expense of repairing a vehicle, so let's paint a full picture, so people are properly informed. I pulled all the Tesla's by me, the Top 20 lowest price MS they're all 7-11 years old with 60-147K miles and are selling for between $15-19K. If you're willing to give a used Tesla a shot, it's worth considering, assuming you get a pre-purchase inspection of the vehicle to make sure there are no major issues and the battery is in good shape.

However I see what you mean by 10-20k usd and that’s AUD of up too 30k and then there’s the transport fees ie shipping and tax that’s another 10k usd and then I have to register and insurance etc so it might be 45-55k all up I’m not stupid on this one.

@@malcolmrickarby2313 Malcolm, I’m seeing more predictions by automotive parties and researchers (FCC, EVC, NRMA, AAA, etc) that the vehicle mix on Australian roads will eventually settle down to 30% BEV, 30% hybrid and 30% ICE. If that scenario eventuates then 60% of private cars on Australian roads will still require liquid fuel. That’s a huge market and the oil companies will respond to that demand. As for Government policy, any Government who ignores the needs and demands of a majority group historically does not last long in office. Even the Viking when he first started this channel a couple of years ago suggested we would end up with 50% EV and 50% ICE in Australia. His audience is predominantly American now so he doesn’t comment on Australia much anymore.

@@fanbelt9926 you’re repeating the story of “Predictions” that are really only self serving guesses from groups with acknowledged vested interests in maintaining the status quo while ignoring the well understood science behind all modern disruptions.🤔

@@PyroShields Yeah, which is caused usually because they draw too much current. Now why did it draw too much current? Maybe because there's something wrong with the battery chemistry? For me it would be too risky to buy such a battery, when it's out of warranty and with that pre-existing fault, that's quite a bit of a gamble here.

@@hiram1923 Too much current would be from rapid charging. Some say that's not good for the battery others say it's not true. However the whole battery never goes bad it's some of the cells. If you can find a shop that services BEV's they can replace the faulty cells.

The tax credit has some stipulations. It has to be bought from a dealer, and the credit can't have been claimed by a previous owner. Looking at the Autotrader ads in the US, if a Tesla qualifies for the tax credit, they've included it in the price already. So a Tesla advertised at $13,000 probably isn't going to be a $9,000 Tesla. The cheapest working Teslas also tend to be Model S60s with about 100 miles of range.
