Model X owner here, don't go replacing anything until you've reached out to Cleevely EV in Cheltenham. They offer a mobile service and are brilliant. Much cheaper than tesla and often understand the problems better than even Tesla do.
I spoke to Cleevely at the Everything Electric show on Friday and they confirmed they can indeed replace all the suspension parts using one of their mobile mechanics, they also said they don't use Tesla parts but much better after-market options, the guy I spoke to said that the Tesla manufactured parts are made of cheese, that did make me laugh! So I'm going to get a quote from them and see if they can do the work.
Congratulations on your choice. You’re driving a £130k car for under £30k even including the suspension work which is just normal wear and tear on these heavy vehicles. I’ve had an X90D since new and it’s now done 165k miles. Battery still has 91% of its original charge and gentle driving still gives over 200 miles range from full despite me supercharging it 99% of the time. . Since The “vehicle” warranty of 50k miles (separate from battery/motors one) ran out for me after barely 2 years and 90% of my repair costs have been suspension components. Bearing in mind neither of those warranties require you to pay for any services if you so wish this vehicle has been astonishingly value. A Range Rover would have been a comparable vehicle cost wise from new and god knows what 165k miles would have cost in servicing and repairs for that! I also have the unbelievable “free charging for life “ on this vehicle and its mind blowing to work out what an 18 mpg RR would have cost in fuel (it would have to be the V8 to be anywhere close in performance) I’ll be close to 200k when my warranty runs out. In time I may well need a new battery/motors but I’ll happily pay for that. Some of these vehicles have gone way past 400k on their originals. You’ll never stop the keyboard warriors unfortunately despite them never having lived with one.
Thank you for your comments, it's reassuring to hear from another X owner as it's quite scary as I literally bought this without really know what I was doing (other than watching a few videos!). I purposely avoided looking at anything made by JLR (RR/LR and Jaguar) as they have such a poor reputation. It sounds like you must have quite an early X if you have free super-charging, so far I've only done a couple quick SC stops (all have been hassle-free and £15-£20 cost) as most of my charging has been at home on Intelligent Octopus Go (7p/kWh), so it's dirt cheap to fill up and get another 220 miles range (what I am getting at the moment from 100%). I did work out my battery degradation is about 12%, this is from some very rough calculations using the figures on the energy graph (and based on 95kWH usable capacity when new). I did a 200 mile trip the other day, started on 92% and finished on 6% (so consumed 86%). That was without really trying (eg A/C was on, music, and mixed roads). At the moment I am blown away by just how much car I've got for the money, the depreciation on these things has got to a point where your average man in the street can afford them, even the insurance was only an extra £85 for me. Only thing bugging me right now is the corrosion on the rear spoiler, seems to be a common issue - have you been suffering with that?
My rear spoiler is corroded underneath but Tesla would not honour the paintwork warranty on it. They are pretty much all affected and the huge issue surrounding this is that the spoiler cannot be simply removed and refitted. I ordered my first Tesla in 2014 and actually paid £2500 ish to have free charging which they allowed me to transfer to the new X but that policy was stopped and was one of the reasons I never bought another new one despite me changing cars every couple of years previously.I simply didn’t want to give that up and I still to this day don’t understand why if I sell this car the new owner scores for the free charging as it stays with the car ( there are very few like this) but me as a customer who’d be on his third new Tesla loses it ! With regard to degradation and getting the most miles from a charge there’s a great deal to be learned but a lot of current owners don’t seek out such advice. I’d be happy to give you the benefit of my experience maybe on another platform (FB) if you’re interested
AS a prospective Telsa owner, and current Land Rover owner, I'll pitch in here. My D4 is 14 years old, 165k miles, and a basic annual service (at a LR Independent) is around £700 per year (thats not including things like pads/disks etc) last year I need some suspension arms as well, and that was £1500, tyres (need replacing across the axle, so minumum of 2 at a time) at £270 each, then there are the electrics, timing belts, suspension etc, plus the crank fear, oh and not forgetting fuel, roughly £90 per week in diesel for around 300 miles range :)
Enjoyed your honest film, you appear to have been left with a long list of work at your cost that the garage should have done before you bought this - especially the tyres and suspension. If I were you I would be talking to them and involve your local trading standards office. It doesn’t matter how good a deal you think you got - the car needs to be fit for purpose when you drive away. Good luck with it and hope for updates as you go forward

Good choice! I bought a very similar car 7months ago and absolutely love it. 107k miles on it now. Did wonder at the time if I was mad! It’s so much better in every way to the vw toureg I had before. Got the lower intermediate shaft replaced by tesla Belfast couple months ago, £33 for shaft plus £99 for labour and test drove a model 3 when I was waiting! Mine is wearing the tyres badly on the inside too, I’m told there are aftermarket arms that are adjustable to correct the camber, might be something to look into when you have to replace them anyway
@@davidlewis4399 It depends what brand you go for, the ones I got weren't much more than what it would cost to fit 4 tyres to my Ford S-Max, it was about £670 I think. But if you're only used to paying £50 a corner, then of course it's going to seem expensive, it's relative at the end of the day.
Hi Paul, thats a great review thanks. You got a great price there! On the power consumption point, hopefully you'll find that stop/start city driving is actually much better than fast & constant speed driving. EVs don't like pushing cars through the air at speed and therefore, at low speed, they tend to do much better. Anyway, have fun with your Model X!
Thanks for your comment, I would have thought stop/start driving would be much worse as it has to repeatedly haul 2.5 tons from 0 to 30 or whatever, at least on the motorway you are maintaining the momentum. I've only had the car three weeks so still learning. Road noise is quite bad at 70+ mph, so found myself driving a bit more slowly on motorways, 60-65mph seems okay and range doesn't seem too bad if you can maintain constant speed.
@@DJBaldPaul yeah, it’s counter intuitive really especially against ICE experience. Also at low speed when braking, you’re regenerating a large portion of that used energy to get going in the first place. By no means is it 100%, but it is significant. Electric motors and inverters get less efficient with speed, so when comparing against your old diesel it’s quite different.
Interesting, I do a lot of short trips during the week, what I need to do is stop topping up at night and run the battery down and see just what sort of miles I end up doing compared to the longer 200 miles runs I've done recently, will be an interesting study and appeal to my nerdish tendencies - I might do a follow-up video on that.

@@davidlewis4399 The thing is prices are coming down all the time and they are becoming more affordable, but they aren't for everyone. You really do need to have off-street parking so you can charge it at home overnight on a cheap tariff (ie 7p/kWh with Octopus), it's really not cost effective if you rely on public chargers - I have only had my car 2 months and have already saved about £400 in diesel, and I notice my bank account has more cash in it when payday comes around.
2017 model x 75d here. Had it for a few months but yes be careful and DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! not every previous tesla owner will be as thorough in charging habits and what not so be careful. We got extremely lucky, sticker price was $27,500 which is INSANE for such a great car and we love it. a lot of these prices are dropping like a rock because they’re about to go out of warranty and people are afraid of the battery failing. nonsense, if you take care of the car it will last a very very long time not to mention most insurance providers have battery coverage for EVs that is only like $75 extra a month didn’t go with a model Y because, well it’s ugly… the front looks like an alien egg mixed with a wasp not a fan and these cars still have turn stalks and some buttons so it’s perfect I recommend this car so much great video!
Nice review. I'm currently looking for one for the missus. Trying to avoid one with as many miles as yours but this review alleviated my co cerns tbh. Enjoy it. Also, in the LTE connection issue, this has recently been introduced as a bug across all models resulting in YT drop out etc and notnto do with MCU.
@@jonnymack1974 I've been listening to music off USB again and just done 300 miles without any issues, I now think the LTE dropouts I was having were to do with poor reception in Norfolk area than any specific MCU1 issues.

Seems like you are really happy with it and that is all that matters! ... Plenty to keep you interested in these and Im sure it will serve you well. Nearly bought one but it was a wee bit on the big side for me hence got a Y instead which is still on the bigger side of what I wanted. Just keep an eye on them tyres. My advice and from experience is buy non budget for anything that has a good amount of torque and your car has it in spades. keep an eye out for any bulges on the inner an d outer walls as this can be a weakness with budget tyres and they might fail before the thread wears and that is very dangerous. The car is in the garage today having the steering ishaft and UJ replaced. I got the suspension looked at by another garage (who also do MOTs) and they reckon it's okay - they couldn't find any significant play, certainly not enough to fail an MOT, and the fact there are not MOT advisories for it makes them wonder why I've been told it all needs replacing, so I will leave that work for a bit. I am getting some weird creaking/squeaking noises now, which seem fairly common, so may look at getting that resolved. Keep the comments coming, especially from other MX owners, I love reading them all! 🙂
Congratulations on getting your tesla model X. I have had one from new in 2018 and after 140k miles it is still a great car. Maintenance costs for mine have only been about £5k with problems with suspension, steering and AC. Otherwise has been trouble free. Have never had problems with the falcon wing doors. I have free unlimited charging for life, so my main cost has been tyres - the model X is heavy on tyres, I need to replace about every 20k miles. The used prices now are ridiculously cheap, £20-30k for a car that was over £100k new. That may be partly because a lot of model X owner have traded for the model Y since it came out in 2022. I have a Y too, obviously newer tech and in my opinion a bit more fun to drive, but the X is still excellent and its carrying capacity is huge. I have no trouble travelling long distances with the Tesla superchargers - in fact tomorrow are driving to Spain. Thanks for mentioning Berkshire Fiesta Centre. I am not far away, so worth knowing private garage that can do Tesla.
Great video. Maybe with hindsight worth considering getting a used Tesla checked by an independent before buying ? This would have got you a couple more grand off the purchase price.
Oh for sure, it's definitely worth getting it inspected beforehand (I'd recommend that for any used car purchase tbh), unfortunately I just didn't have the time to arrange this as was due to go on holiday and needed a car quickly (my old car had been written off and I didn't have any wheels!).
Are you referring to the back? If so that actually works better for me as I came from a Ford S-Max which has a "square" back, it was ideal for the dog, now the roof slopes on the X she doesn't have quite as much room to stand up. There is room, but not as much as the S-Max. I might take a look at the EQB again in the future, I can't remember why I discounted it this time around, it might be just that the X seemed like better value. I do like the look of the EQB though, maybe next time!
Great honest review of your model X experience. A complete eye opener as I’ve been looking at the Q7 and XC90 for a 7 seater, never thought about the model X. Good luck for owning a fine example and happy days for your EV ownership.
Ah, I looked at those too. I used to own an Audi Q7, I bought it in 2017 on a PCP but cancelled it after 2 years, luckily just before the covid lockdown. It had 22" alloys and all the toys, it was a beast, but actually a bit slow off the line and the PCP was very expensive. I think there was a Q7 etron version but it will be 1st generation and probably beset with problems so I would avoid those. Then the non-Q7 etrons have a different body shape and aren't big enough or have other issues with range and software, and the newer ones like the Q8 are too expensive. I also looked at the XC90 but was more interested in a hybrid than a pure diesel, and there isn't an EV version (isn't that the new EX90 or something, so brand new and very expensive?). The XC90 hybrid version is the T8 but I think only has about 20 miles range on the battery, seems a bit low as means you'll be running off petrol once that runs out, and on a long drive that will work out quite expensive as economy will be rubbish, also used T8s are still very expensive (£30K+). When you look at other SUV hybrids and EVs, they are all really expensive or not practical enough, that's why I ended up with the X, it meets all my needs and the prices are coming down to a reasonable level now. I have had a leaf since 2016, and I never spent any money on it apart from tires and a set of wipers. I only did the first two services in 2017 and 2018, the tax is free and I 've always charger at work. Until last month, when I had a small incident and because it not worth anything nowadays, the price of the repair was 60% the price of the car, so they write it off :( Then I considered buying a user car for the first time, and a tesla was on top of my list, but the prices I would have to pay for any issues I would might have scared me off of it. I end up buying an used leaf from the same year with the money I got from the insurance. Including the insurance for this year!

Yes you're right about the rear spoiler, it is suffering from corrosion, this seems to be quite common. I read one guy got his replaced and it was £1000+! The car did come with a 3rd party warranty but it doesn't cover wear and tear, I'll give them a call anyway and see if they'll cover any of the work I need doing (eg suspension or steering UJ).

Worth you logging a corrosion issue with Tesla, nothing to lose! I’ve read about differing responses from Tesla - some have been replaced under warranty and some refused. Clearly it’s a manufacturing issue (can’t have been caused by an untreated stone chip, for example!). I’ll let you know how I get on on Thursday - I have a mobile appointment for CCS upgrade and I’ll let the technician see the corrosion…..
CCS upgrade was the first thing I did :-) car is still limited to 150kW though but tbh if it was any quicker when stopping at a supercharger I wouldn't have time to stuff my face with a burger and have a wee, I'd only have time for one of those.

I dont think this is a P100D, just a 100D. Although the badge says P100D, look at the dash near the start if the video, just 100D. Also pedals are not performance ones. Interesting video though. Thanks.
@@DanCarter-mw9wh Yes, someone else mentioned this on Facebook, it seems the car may have been mis-badged or someone did something dodgy in the past as the info screen says it's got a small rear motor and the car is listed as a 100D not P100D. All a bit strange. I wonder if other X's have been mis-badged?
@@ascelot My car still has 2 years Tesla battery and drive train warranty left, so that's not really a concern for me. After 2 years I'll still have a car with a decent range, the battery isn't going to suddenly lose all its capacity. Even after the warranty expires there are companies that specialise in servicing battery packs, they can even replace failing modules with new or reconditioned ones, so there isn't even a need to change the whole pack. There's a company called Cedar Electric down near Worthing that can service battery packs so there really isn't any need to be worried about it. It's not going to be cheap but it's a lot cheaper than changing the pack or buying another car. And remember that it might not even be necessary, there are Teslas on RUclips that have done over 400,000 miles.
@@DJBaldPaul Still for me, a anxiety based, as well as personal experience from owning hybrid, that repairs can and will be expensive, as not a lot of independant garages will touch them depending on what needs to be fixed. My Auris had break pipe failures, main dealer was my only option, considering it cost half the price of the car, decided to let it go.
You should get more range in slower stop start traffic as the motor is not engaged unlike a combustion engine when you idle. Motorways is usually the worse for large EVs as the air resistance plays a big part I energy consumption as jt goes up as a square of your speed.
I am still looking into this, I did a long run last week, 200 miles round trip, but turned off the A/C and limited my speed to 60mph mostly on dual carriageway, based on the figures in the energy meter I calculated my range would have been around 280 miles (100%->0%). Previously I had done that journey at 70mph with the A/C on and my range was around 230 miles - so just slowing down a bit and turning off the A/C makes a big difference. I've also charged up and just done short trips throughout the week and managed about 6 days before I needed to charge again, this time I had only done about 115 miles and lost 61% (80% -> 19%) battery, I calculated my range for 100%->0% was about 190 miles again based on the energy meter, but that also said I had only used 36kWh since the last charge. I think I had lost more simply through overnight battery drain hence the poor range. So whilst stop start traffic might give you more range theoretically, I didn't really see this in real world conditions.
@@DJBaldPaul also when the car needs to be brought up to operational cabin temperature it takes a lot of energy from the battery so you might see that difference more significantly as to when you do a long journey. Air temprate also plays a part in efficency if you commute is typically in the morning where its a bit colder you tend to use more energy I have 2 Kia e niros and on both I notice I use more energy to get to work than to come back home.
How do they deem that to be safe sitting in the back 2 seats with your head that close to the trim/roofline? Best never to put adults in there to be safe.
Beautiful cars but Tesla customer service is horrible. Im still waiting for them to replace a drive unit on my model 3. Luckily, it still has a warranty on it, but the waiting time is longer than four weeks. As soon as I get my car back, I will sell it because the value of them drops like flies.
Great review but did you look at other EV’s ? We picked up a 2022 MG5 with less than 20k for much less than Model X after much deliberation, as I did want a Tesla but am so happy we did, I realise some people prefer to pay for a badge but that’s not me, the MG5 is rock solid has loads of room.
No I hadn't really considered MG but I've just looked on Autotrader and there's loads of them, they look like really good value. Deffo worth considering.
Have an mg zs ev, been fantastic. Bought new in 21 now near 40k miles and only 2% battery degradation. At the time the grants for car and charger were great now everything is gone and car much more expensive. Same car with same spec will cost probably 10k more next year when we trade in so started looking at others second hand including tesla!
Check your CCS has had its charger upgrade matched not just supplying the adaptor disregard 🙄 in your case . Ps nothing wrong with the 75 battery or 100 anyone buying checkout the potential snags with the 85-90 ? Battery before buying .if you get another 100k out of the suspension bushes is OK. Do watch out for noisy suspension compressor early warning🙂. Good to repair if caught early
My S-Max would never get that far, I could do about 450 on a tank if driven carefully, more likely 400 with town/city driving. Mine was the 2.0l 210PS version, so not as frugal as others in the range. It would cost about £85 to fill up. I'm getting about 250 miles range from the Model X, and that costs £6.65 to full up from 0%-100%. So if I charged it twice it would cost me £13.30 and I'd get similar range to the S-Max, but with a saving of £71.20. The key to EV ownership is charging at home on a cheap overnight tariff.
what sort of dealer sells a car with dangerous worn out tyres and dodgy steering for £26k.. what else could be wrong i wonder ... also the car will be worth scrap in 2 years when the warranty expires
What a ridiculous statement. Just because the warranty runs out doesn't mean the car is scrap. There's Teslas out there with over 400,000 miles on them, it's got years of life left in it.
Haha you could be right, but my local tyre place did me 4 x GT Radial EV tyres for £670 all in, so actually it's not too bad. Michelin Pilots would be at least double that price and I don't see the point in spending that kind of money.

If you're happy with it great, I own a 62kw Nissan Leaf that does 239 miles if driven correctly so I'm not sure why you're car is doing similar, The model X is the best Tesla in the early range and I like the dashboard better as they look odd with no gauge in front, Hope it serves you well,
It's a big heavy car, rated range is 300 miles or so, but I just did a long drive down to Somerset and back, I turned off the A/C (didn't need it as it was nighttime) and slowed down to 60 all the way along the A303 and my range went up to around 250-260 miles (actually I reckon it was more as I started at 89%, if I add in that other 11% it would be more like 280). Really good for a 6 year old car.
TBH it doesn't bother me as I plan to keep it for a few years, I generally run my cars for 4 years or more. Most of the depreciation has already happened on my car now, so if I sell it for 10K in 4 years time, I'll have lost 4K per year which is not that different to a traditional ICE car of similar value.
@@DJBaldPaul Don’t think of it as a depreciation curve like with a traditional ICE vehicle. Think of it like a depreciation curve with a cell phone. Your several-year old iPhone 4 is likely worth a fraction of what you originally paid. Your Tesla is trending in that direction.

@@Ronick-Q-46Plenty of Tesla's with 400,000+ miles on , most cars in the UK are scrapped around 125,000 miles . Warranty on most Ice cars 5 years or 60,000 miles, warranty on most EVs 8 years or 100,000 miles . That 5 years on your ice car is only if you have it serviced regularly, no servicing on EV drive trains . Obviously you know nothing about the longevity of EVs .
Plug in hybrids are a waste of space. Full hybrid will also do 30 plus miles on battery alone around town but no need to ever plug in. By the way, dogs must be restrained in a harness by law!
Not quite, they must be restrained (highway code Rule57) and harness is one of the suggested methods. My two go into the dog crates in the rear of the discovery, but they have no other restraint in there

Great Video. I personally will never buy a EV. Certainly not a Tesla. Do not like the styling don’t like the cost and the weight problem. Components will ware ! That steering rack comes under a lot of strain. I can see the point of EV for city cars but for the longer journeys NO. AS for saving the planet I’m not fooled. BUT thank you for your honesty! It’ll only be a few years & you’ll see the majority of people making the jump to EV’s, had ours a year now & will never go back, it’s def the future, as professional engineer & worked with petrol & diesel cars for over 30 years & have loved it but for personal use this is the future.

Have you suffered a flat 12v battery issues let alone the up and coming HV battery issues? They are a night mare financially. they're great if still under or someone as a company owner can wright it off as a company expense. Worst cars ever made and only in 10 years or so. You have ICE cars still running made during 1940's. Yes eco friendly, explain how? the disposal of the batteries, them catching fire. The recovery when they decide to play posam??
No problems with either 12v or HV battery. You do know EV batteries are recycled yeah? A whole industry has sprung up to process them. There's plenty of 10yr old Teslas still on the road and they aren't suddenly going to stop working. What's your point re catching fire? There's more ICE fires per year than EV fires, this has been proven statistically.
For that money you could have bought a real Toyota or Lexus Hybride, and your would be done for the next twenty years. Now you bought a big money pit !!
A Toyota or Lexus hybrid still needs just as much maintenance as a regular ICE car. Hybrids are even more complex than ICE vehicles and are the least reliable due to complexity. Toyota & Lexus don't have warranties as good as Teslas and as far as I'm aware certainly don't offer unlimited mileage warranty on their batteries..... Seems to me like an ICE car is a money pit as it's more expensive to maintain, fuel & Tax........

Well some people think that having a decent car that suits all your family needs is part of “living your life” as for the mortgage he may not even have one or rent.
What's wrong with it is that it is a Tesla Model X..............and there's a reason that it has lost all that value so you could buy it for the over valued price of £26K.

Weight of these cars gives rise to suspension wear . Who with a brain puts this money into 100 k + mile cars . For a reality check try to sell it !!.
Now you're the one spouting BS. I just did a long drive down to Somerset and back and I'm on target to get about 250 miles range. The battery has about 10% degradation by my calculations, that's pretty good for a 6 year old Tesla, it's got plenty of life left in it yet. Suspension wear happens with all vehicles so that's a normal service item.
Sounds like you've fallen for all of the non fact checked clickbaity BEV disinformation that the Daily Mail etc repeat. Compared to a similar spec ICE vehicle it's great value. You'll have all the associated maintenance items if you buy an ICE vehicle. You certainly won't have an 8yr vehicle & unlimited mileage warranty on the most expensive to replace item on the car! All the muggins who have never driven or run EV's are missing out.......
I guess you're in Anglesey? We went there on holiday a couple years ago (Treaddur Bay - might have misspelt that!). Anyway, yes it will be interesting to see what the depreciation is like my, car has already lost most of it's money so depreciation will slow down now, but the new Model X's are only LHD now, so could suffer catastrophic depreciation, on the other hand there aren't as many of them being sold (you can't order a new one on the Tesla web site right now), so they are harder to get hold of, which might keep prices high - who knows what will happen?

Model X owner here, don't go replacing anything until you've reached out to Cleevely EV in Cheltenham. They offer a mobile service and are brilliant. Much cheaper than tesla and often understand the problems better than even Tesla do.
I spoke to Cleevely at the Everything Electric show on Friday and they confirmed they can indeed replace all the suspension parts using one of their mobile mechanics, they also said they don't use Tesla parts but much better after-market options, the guy I spoke to said that the Tesla manufactured parts are made of cheese, that did make me laugh! So I'm going to get a quote from them and see if they can do the work.
Congratulations on your choice. You’re driving a £130k car for under £30k even including the suspension work which is just normal wear and tear on these heavy vehicles. I’ve had an X90D since new and it’s now done 165k miles. Battery still has 91% of its original charge and gentle driving still gives over 200 miles range from full despite me supercharging it 99% of the time. . Since The “vehicle” warranty of 50k miles (separate from battery/motors one) ran out for me after barely 2 years and 90% of my repair costs have been suspension components. Bearing in mind neither of those warranties require you to pay for any services if you so wish this vehicle has been astonishingly value. A Range Rover would have been a comparable vehicle cost wise from new and god knows what 165k miles would have cost in servicing and repairs for that! I also have the unbelievable “free charging for life “ on this vehicle and its mind blowing to work out what an 18 mpg RR would have cost in fuel (it would have to be the V8 to be anywhere close in performance) I’ll be close to 200k when my warranty runs out. In time I may well need a new battery/motors but I’ll happily pay for that. Some of these vehicles have gone way past 400k on their originals. You’ll never stop the keyboard warriors unfortunately despite them never having lived with one.
Thank you for your comments, it's reassuring to hear from another X owner as it's quite scary as I literally bought this without really know what I was doing (other than watching a few videos!). I purposely avoided looking at anything made by JLR (RR/LR and Jaguar) as they have such a poor reputation. It sounds like you must have quite an early X if you have free super-charging, so far I've only done a couple quick SC stops (all have been hassle-free and £15-£20 cost) as most of my charging has been at home on Intelligent Octopus Go (7p/kWh), so it's dirt cheap to fill up and get another 220 miles range (what I am getting at the moment from 100%). I did work out my battery degradation is about 12%, this is from some very rough calculations using the figures on the energy graph (and based on 95kWH usable capacity when new). I did a 200 mile trip the other day, started on 92% and finished on 6% (so consumed 86%). That was without really trying (eg A/C was on, music, and mixed roads). At the moment I am blown away by just how much car I've got for the money, the depreciation on these things has got to a point where your average man in the street can afford them, even the insurance was only an extra £85 for me. Only thing bugging me right now is the corrosion on the rear spoiler, seems to be a common issue - have you been suffering with that?
My rear spoiler is corroded underneath but Tesla would not honour the paintwork warranty on it. They are pretty much all affected and the huge issue surrounding this is that the spoiler cannot be simply removed and refitted. I ordered my first Tesla in 2014 and actually paid £2500 ish to have free charging which they allowed me to transfer to the new X but that policy was stopped and was one of the reasons I never bought another new one despite me changing cars every couple of years previously.I simply didn’t want to give that up and I still to this day don’t understand why if I sell this car the new owner scores for the free charging as it stays with the car ( there are very few like this) but me as a customer who’d be on his third new Tesla loses it ! With regard to degradation and getting the most miles from a charge there’s a great deal to be learned but a lot of current owners don’t seek out such advice. AS a prospective Telsa owner, and current Land Rover owner, I'll pitch in here. My D4 is 14 years old, 165k miles, and a basic annual service (at a LR Independent) is around £700 per year (thats not including things like pads/disks etc) last year I need some suspension arms as well, and that was £1500, tyres (need replacing across the axle, so minumum of 2 at a time) at £270 each, then there are the electrics, timing belts, suspension etc, plus the crank fear, oh and not forgetting fuel, roughly £90 per week in diesel for around 300 miles range :)
oh and nearly forgot £700 per year ved, and astronimocal insurance due to being so easily stolen
Enjoyed your honest film, you appear to have been left with a long list of work at your cost that the garage should have done before you bought this - especially the tyres and suspension. If I were you I would be talking to them and involve your local trading standards office. It doesn’t matter how good a deal you think you got - the car needs to be fit for purpose when you drive away.

Good choice! I bought a very similar car 7months ago and absolutely love it. 107k miles on it now. Did wonder at the time if I was mad! It’s so much better in every way to the vw toureg I had before. Got the lower intermediate shaft replaced by tesla Belfast couple months ago, £33 for shaft plus £99 for labour and test drove a model 3 when I was waiting! Mine is wearing the tyres badly on the inside too, I’m told there are aftermarket arms that are adjustable to correct the camber, might be something to look into when you have to replace them anyway

@@davidlewis4399 It depends what brand you go for, the ones I got weren't much more than what it would cost to fit 4 tyres to my Ford S-Max, it was about £670 I think. But if you're only used to paying £50 a corner, then of course it's going to seem expensive, it's relative at the end of the day.

On the power consumption point, hopefully you'll find that stop/start city driving is actually much better than fast & constant speed driving. EVs don't like pushing cars through the air at speed and therefore, at low speed, they tend to do much better. Anyway, have fun with your Model X!
Thanks for your comment, I would have thought stop/start driving would be much worse as it has to repeatedly haul 2.5 tons from 0 to 30 or whatever, at least on the motorway you are maintaining the momentum. I've only had the car three weeks so still learning. Road noise is quite bad at 70+ mph, so found myself driving a bit more slowly on motorways, 60-65mph seems okay and range doesn't seem too bad if you can maintain constant speed.
@@DJBaldPaul yeah, it’s counter intuitive really especially against ICE experience. Also at low speed when braking, you’re regenerating a large portion of that used energy to get going in the first place. By no means is it 100%, but it is significant.
Electric motors and inverters get less efficient with speed, so when comparing against your old diesel it’s quite different.
Interesting, I do a lot of short trips during the week, what I need to do is stop topping up at night and run the battery down and see just what sort of miles I end up doing compared to the longer 200 miles runs I've done recently, will be an interesting study and appeal to my nerdish tendencies - I might do a follow-up video on that.

@@davidlewis4399 The thing is prices are coming down all the time and they are becoming more affordable, but they aren't for everyone. You really do need to have off-street parking so you can charge it at home overnight on a cheap tariff (ie 7p/kWh with Octopus), it's really not cost effective if you rely on public chargers - I have only had my car 2 months and have already saved about £400 in diesel, and I notice my bank account has more cash in it when payday comes around.

2017 model x 75d here. Had it for a few months but yes be careful and DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! not every previous tesla owner will be as thorough in charging habits and what not so be careful.
We got extremely lucky, sticker price was $27,500 which is INSANE for such a great car and we love it. a lot of these prices are dropping like a rock because they’re about to go out of warranty and people are afraid of the battery failing. nonsense, if you take care of the car it will last a very very long time not to mention most insurance providers have battery coverage for EVs that is only like $75 extra a month
didn’t go with a model Y because, well it’s ugly… the front looks like an alien egg mixed with a wasp not a fan and these cars still have turn stalks and some buttons so it’s perfect

@@jonnymack1974 I've been listening to music off USB again and just done 300 miles without any issues, I now think the LTE dropouts I was having were to do with poor reception in Norfolk area than any specific MCU1 issues.

Seems like you are really happy with it and that is all that matters! ... Plenty to keep you interested in these and Im sure it will serve you well. Nearly bought one but it was a wee bit on the big side for me hence got a Y instead which is still on the bigger side of what I wanted.
Just keep an eye on them tyres. My advice and from experience is buy non budget for anything that has a good amount of torque and your car has it in spades. keep an eye out for any bulges on the inner an d outer walls as this can be a weakness with budget tyres and they might fail before the thread wears and that is very dangerous.

The car is in the garage today having the steering ishaft and UJ replaced. I got the suspension looked at by another garage (who also do MOTs) and they reckon it's okay - they couldn't find any significant play, certainly not enough to fail an MOT, and the fact there are not MOT advisories for it makes them wonder why I've been told it all needs replacing, so I will leave that work for a bit. I am getting some weird creaking/squeaking noises now, which seem fairly common, so may look at getting that resolved. Keep the comments coming, especially from other MX owners, I love reading them all! 🙂

Congratulations on getting your tesla model X. I have had one from new in 2018 and after 140k miles it is still a great car. Maintenance costs for mine have only been about £5k with problems with suspension, steering and AC. Otherwise has been trouble free. Have never had problems with the falcon wing doors. I have free unlimited charging for life, so my main cost has been tyres - the model X is heavy on tyres, I need to replace about every 20k miles. The used prices now are ridiculously cheap, £20-30k for a car that was over £100k new. That may be partly because a lot of model X owner have traded for the model Y since it came out in 2022. I have a Y too, obviously newer tech and in my opinion a bit more fun to drive, but the X is still excellent and its carrying capacity is huge. I have no trouble travelling long distances with the Tesla superchargers - in fact tomorrow are driving to Spain. Thanks for mentioning Berkshire Fiesta Centre. I am not far away, so worth knowing private garage that can do Tesla.

Great video. Maybe with hindsight worth considering getting a used Tesla checked by an independent before buying ? This would have got you a couple more grand off the purchase price.
Oh for sure, it's definitely worth getting it inspected beforehand (I'd recommend that for any used car purchase tbh), unfortunately I just didn't have the time to arrange this as was due to go on holiday and needed a car quickly (my old car had been written off and I didn't have any wheels!).

Are you referring to the back? If so that actually works better for me as I came from a Ford S-Max which has a "square" back, it was ideal for the dog, now the roof slopes on the X she doesn't have quite as much room to stand up. There is room, but not as much as the S-Max. I might take a look at the EQB again in the future, I can't remember why I discounted it this time around, it might be just that the X seemed like better value. I do like the look of the EQB though, maybe next time!

Great honest review of your model X experience. A complete eye opener as I’ve been looking at the Q7 and XC90 for a 7 seater, never thought about the model X. Good luck for owning a fine example and happy days for your EV ownership.
Ah, I looked at those too. I used to own an Audi Q7, I bought it in 2017 on a PCP but cancelled it after 2 years, luckily just before the covid lockdown. It had 22" alloys and all the toys, it was a beast, but actually a bit slow off the line and the PCP was very expensive. I think there was a Q7 etron version but it will be 1st generation and probably beset with problems so I would avoid those. Then the non-Q7 etrons have a different body shape and aren't big enough or have other issues with range and software, and the newer ones like the Q8 are too expensive. I also looked at the XC90 but was more interested in a hybrid than a pure diesel, and there isn't an EV version (isn't that the new EX90 or something, so brand new and very expensive?). The XC90 hybrid version is the T8 but I think only has about 20 miles range on the battery, seems a bit low as means you'll be running off petrol once that runs out, and on a long drive that will work out quite expensive as economy will be rubbish, also used T8s are still very expensive (£30K+). When you look at other SUV hybrids and EVs, they are all really expensive or not practical enough, that's why I ended up with the X, it meets all my needs and the prices are coming down to a reasonable level now. Take a look and let me know here how you get on.
I have had a leaf since 2016, and I never spent any money on it apart from tires and a set of wipers. I only did the first two services in 2017 and 2018, the tax is free and I 've always charger at work. Until last month, when I had a small incident and because it not worth anything nowadays, the price of the repair was 60% the price of the car, so they write it off :(
Then I considered buying a user car for the first time, and a tesla was on top of my list, but the prices I would have to pay for any issues I would might have scared me off of it.
I end up buying an used leaf from the same year with the money I got from the insurance. Including the insurance for this year!

I only had to pay an upgrade fee of £80 to switch out my S-Max for the Tesla, total premium was less than £500.

Yes you're right about the rear spoiler, it is suffering from corrosion, this seems to be quite common. I read one guy got his replaced and it was £1000+! The car did come with a 3rd party warranty but it doesn't cover wear and tear, I'll give them a call anyway and see if they'll cover any of the work I need doing (eg suspension or steering UJ).
@@DJBaldPaul rear spoiler should be covered by corrosion warranty…mine has started to corrode slightly (2018) - I will approach Tesla SC this week - fingers crossed! I’ll let you know what they say…..

Worth you logging a corrosion issue with Tesla, nothing to lose! I’ve read about differing responses from Tesla - some have been replaced under warranty and some refused. Clearly it’s a manufacturing issue (can’t have been caused by an untreated stone chip, for example!). I’ll let you know how I get on on Thursday - I have a mobile appointment for CCS upgrade and I’ll let the technician see the corrosion…..
CCS upgrade was the first thing I did :-) car is still limited to 150kW though but tbh if it was any quicker when stopping at a supercharger I wouldn't have time to stuff my face with a burger and have a wee, I'd only have time for one of those.

@@DanCarter-mw9wh Yes, someone else mentioned this on Facebook, it seems the car may have been mis-badged or someone did something dodgy in the past as the info screen says it's got a small rear motor and the car is listed as a 100D not P100D. All a bit strange. I wonder if other X's have been mis-badged?

Have to run soft compound tyres to tesla, they wear quickly. The torque the car produces requires grippy tyres. choose correctly for your own safety.

The steering is an automatic mot fail. So is the tyres. How can the dealer sell you a un-road worthy car?
If a garage is changing the suspension arms it's their job to aligng the wheels, if they can't go somewhere else

Regardless of price of car, cost per year to upkeep, for me, my main concern is if anything happens to battery, simply cant afford to replace it.
@@ascelot My car still has 2 years Tesla battery and drive train warranty left, so that's not really a concern for me. After 2 years I'll still have a car with a decent range, the battery isn't going to suddenly lose all its capacity. Even after the warranty expires there are companies that specialise in servicing battery packs, they can even replace failing modules with new or reconditioned ones, so there isn't even a need to change the whole pack. There's a company called Cedar Electric down near Worthing that can service battery packs so there really isn't any need to be worried about it. It's not going to be cheap but it's a lot cheaper than changing the pack or buying another car. And remember that it might not even be necessary, there are Teslas on RUclips that have done over 400,000 miles.
@@DJBaldPaul Still for me, a anxiety based, as well as personal experience from owning hybrid, that repairs can and will be expensive, as not a lot of independant garages will touch them depending on what needs to be fixed.
My Auris had break pipe failures, main dealer was my only option, considering it cost half the price of the car, decided to let it go.
You should get more range in slower stop start traffic as the motor is not engaged unlike a combustion engine when you idle. Motorways is usually the worse for large EVs as the air resistance plays a big part I energy consumption as jt goes up as a square of your speed.
I am still looking into this, I did a long run last week, 200 miles round trip, but turned off the A/C and limited my speed to 60mph mostly on dual carriageway, based on the figures in the energy meter I calculated my range would have been around 280 miles (100%->0%). Previously I had done that journey at 70mph with the A/C on and my range was around 230 miles - so just slowing down a bit and turning off the A/C makes a big difference. I've also charged up and just done short trips throughout the week and managed about 6 days before I needed to charge again, this time I had only done about 115 miles and lost 61% (80% -> 19%) battery, I calculated my range for 100%->0% was about 190 miles again based on the energy meter, but that also said I had only used 36kWh since the last charge. I think I had lost more simply through overnight battery drain hence the poor range. So whilst stop start traffic might give you more range theoretically, I didn't really see this in real world conditions.
@@DJBaldPaul also when the car needs to be brought up to operational cabin temperature it takes a lot of energy from the battery so you might see that difference more significantly as to when you do a long journey. Air temprate also plays a part in efficency if you commute is typically in the morning where its a bit colder you tend to use more energy I have 2 Kia e niros and on both I notice I use more energy to get to work than to come back home.

Beautiful cars but Tesla customer service is horrible. Im still waiting for them to replace a drive unit on my model 3. Luckily, it still has a warranty on it, but the waiting time is longer than four weeks. As soon as I get my car back, I will sell it because the value of them drops like flies.

Great review but did you look at other EV’s ? We picked up a 2022 MG5 with less than 20k for much less than Model X after much deliberation, as I did want a Tesla but am so happy we did, I realise some people prefer to pay for a badge but that’s not me, the MG5 is rock solid has loads of room.
No I hadn't really considered MG but I've just looked on Autotrader and there's loads of them, they look like really good value. Deffo worth considering.
Have an mg zs ev, been fantastic. Bought new in 21 now near 40k miles and only 2% battery degradation.
At the time the grants for car and charger were great now everything is gone and car much more expensive. Same car with same spec will cost probably 10k more next year when we trade in so started looking at others second hand including tesla!

There's lots of things Tesla do that make me really hope they ultimately fail, because normalising all the stupid things won't be good.
Check your CCS has had its charger upgrade matched not just supplying the adaptor disregard 🙄 in your case . Ps nothing wrong with the 75 battery or 100 anyone buying checkout the potential snags with the 85-90 ? Battery before buying .if you get another 100k out of the suspension bushes is OK. Do watch out for noisy suspension compressor early warning🙂. Good to repair if caught early

My S-Max would never get that far, I could do about 450 on a tank if driven carefully, more likely 400 with town/city driving. Mine was the 2.0l 210PS version, so not as frugal as others in the range. It would cost about £85 to fill up. I'm getting about 250 miles range from the Model X, and that costs £6.65 to full up from 0%-100%. So if I charged it twice it would cost me £13.30 and I'd get similar range to the S-Max, but with a saving of £71.20. The key to EV ownership is charging at home on a cheap overnight tariff.
what sort of dealer sells a car with dangerous worn out tyres and dodgy steering for £26k.. what else could be wrong i wonder ... also the car will be worth scrap in 2 years when the warranty expires
What a ridiculous statement. Just because the warranty runs out doesn't mean the car is scrap. There's Teslas out there with over 400,000 miles on them, it's got years of life left in it.

Haha you could be right, but my local tyre place did me 4 x GT Radial EV tyres for £670 all in, so actually it's not too bad. Michelin Pilots would be at least double that price and I don't see the point in spending that kind of money.

I own a 62kw Nissan Leaf that does 239 miles if driven correctly so I'm not sure why you're car is doing similar,
The model X is the best Tesla in the early range and I like the dashboard better as they look odd with no gauge in front,

It's a big heavy car, rated range is 300 miles or so, but I just did a long drive down to Somerset and back, I turned off the A/C (didn't need it as it was nighttime) and slowed down to 60 all the way along the A303 and my range went up to around 250-260 miles (actually I reckon it was more as I started at 89%, if I add in that other 11% it would be more like 280). Really good for a 6 year old car.

Wouldn't have any EV as a gift myself, would like to hear in a years time what its worth, that will be a big shock I'll bet.
TBH it doesn't bother me as I plan to keep it for a few years, I generally run my cars for 4 years or more. Most of the depreciation has already happened on my car now, so if I sell it for 10K in 4 years time, I'll have lost 4K per year which is not that different to a traditional ICE car of similar value.

Your several-year old iPhone 4 is likely worth a fraction of what you originally paid. Your Tesla is trending in that direction.

Batteries can be repaired or refurbished, it's not a big deal.

Warranty on most Ice cars 5 years or 60,000 miles, warranty on most EVs 8 years or 100,000 miles .
That 5 years on your ice car is only if you have it serviced regularly, no servicing on EV drive trains .
Obviously you know nothing about the longevity of EVs .

Plug in hybrids are a waste of space. Full hybrid will also do 30 plus miles on battery alone around town but no need to ever plug in.

Not quite, they must be restrained (highway code Rule57) and harness is one of the suggested methods. My two go into the dog crates in the rear of the discovery, but they have no other restraint in there

Great Video. I personally will never buy a EV. Certainly not a Tesla. Do not like the styling don’t like the cost and the weight problem. Components will ware ! That steering rack comes under a lot of strain. I can see the point of EV for city cars but for the longer journeys NO. AS for saving the planet I’m not fooled. BUT thank you for your honesty! It’ll only be a few years & you’ll see the majority of people making the jump to EV’s, had ours a year now & will never go back, it’s def the future, as professional engineer & worked with petrol & diesel cars for over 30 years & have loved it but for personal use this is the future.

Have you suffered a flat 12v battery issues let alone the up and coming HV battery issues? They are a night mare financially. they're great if still under or someone as a company owner can wright it off as a company expense. Worst cars ever made and only in 10 years or so. You have ICE cars still running made during 1940's. Yes eco friendly, explain how? the disposal of the batteries, them catching fire. The recovery when they decide to play posam??
No problems with either 12v or HV battery. You do know EV batteries are recycled yeah? A whole industry has sprung up to process them. There's plenty of 10yr old Teslas still on the road and they aren't suddenly going to stop working. What's your point re catching fire? There's more ICE fires per year than EV fires, this has been proven statistically.
For that money you could have bought a real Toyota or Lexus Hybride, and your would be done for the next twenty years. Now you bought a big money pit !!
A Toyota or Lexus hybrid still needs just as much maintenance as a regular ICE car. Hybrids are even more complex than ICE vehicles and are the least reliable due to complexity.
Toyota & Lexus don't have warranties as good as Teslas and as far as I'm aware certainly don't offer unlimited mileage warranty on their batteries.....
Seems to me like an ICE car is a money pit as it's more expensive to maintain, fuel & Tax........

The battery has about 10% degradation by my calculations, that's pretty good for a 6 year old Tesla, it's got plenty of life left in it yet. Suspension wear happens with all vehicles so that's a normal service item.
Sounds like you've fallen for all of the non fact checked clickbaity BEV disinformation that the Daily Mail etc repeat.
Compared to a similar spec ICE vehicle it's great value. You'll have all the associated maintenance items if you buy an ICE vehicle. You certainly won't have an 8yr vehicle & unlimited mileage warranty on the most expensive to replace item on the car!
All the muggins who have never driven or run EV's are missing out.......

I guess you're in Anglesey? We went there on holiday a couple years ago (Treaddur Bay - might have misspelt that!). Anyway, yes it will be interesting to see what the depreciation is like my, car has already lost most of it's money so depreciation will slow down now, but the new Model X's are only LHD now, so could suffer catastrophic depreciation, on the other hand there aren't as many of them being sold (you can't order a new one on the Tesla web site right now), so they are harder to get hold of, which might keep prices high - who knows what will happen?
