    When reinstalling the engines attach at chain fall to the hook of the crane then lift the engines. That way you'll have the ability to fine tune the placement of the engines back into their mounts without having to rely on the touch of the crane operator.

  • @fcmacken
    @fcmacken 4 года назад +421

    Chris, hope you plan on fixing the one Diesel and checking the other one. These engines are really the best option for this boat, so I would not change anything. You can get a little more out of each power plant with some modifications, but all and all keeping them is the best option. Now you have the chance to really restore this beautiful boat. Check the marine strainers....that was more than likely the cause for the first failure and over heating. Frank M.

    There is no replacement for displacement, and these are 14L, 903 cubic inches. It is laughable to think any engine with half the displacement could reliably give you as much power as these do stock. Any engine under 12L would be inadequate by a large margin. You also have to keep in mind the boat is designed for the weight of the engines that are in it, everything in the boat is placed with the current engine's weight in mind as well as the angle the props are at.
    Rebuilding these and making sure you have working gauges is the best way to get the boat back in the water and enjoying it for a long time.

    • @Reman1975
      @Reman1975 4 года назад +16

      In an earlier video he was talking about less powerful engines and saying it would drop the top speed, but it would still be quick enough for what he wants. I was screaming at my screen over that !
      Top speed on a boat isn't just how fast you travel in relation to the water, it's how fast you can move geographically. If your boat only did 15 knots flat out, there's quite a lot of pretty large rivers where if you were going flat out against the flow you'd still be going backwards in relation to the land around you. Sometimes you NEED some headroom on the throttle just to get where you're going.

      I've seen CVs break off-roading before: IFS vehicles (like the Raptor, for example) are known breaking CVs if the driver of the car sends it to, typically, try and climb something. If the front gets off the deck and the wheels spin, when they contact the ground again at relatively high wheel speed, the shock load snaps CVs. However, I think it was just time for that CV to go.

    Once you have moved prop shaft it would be a good idea to replace all the seals in the "stuffing box" to prevent water intrusion along the prop shaft into the bilge as well as the bearings and seals along the shaft. It's much better to do that now than to have to haul out the boat later when you find leakage from damaged or worn bearings and seals.
