Chris, hope you plan on fixing the one Diesel and checking the other one. These engines are really the best option for this boat, so I would not change anything. There is no replacement for displacement, and these are 14L, 903 cubic inches. It is laughable to think any engine with half the displacement could reliably give you as much power as these do stock. Any engine under 12L would be inadequate by a large margin. You also have to keep in mind the boat is designed for the weight of the engines that are in it, everything in the boat is placed with the current engine's weight in mind as well as the angle the props are at. Rebuilding these and making sure you have working gauges is the best way to get the boat back in the water and enjoying it for a long time.

Welcome to the world of a marine mechanic. I did the job for three years, we once had to remove an entire side window on a large sport fishing boat to bring the crane boom in to lift out the engines which were under the floor of a fully enclosed cabin.

its rounds of packing. pretty east to get and replace, I highly suggest doing it while its out, count the rounds, most pumps use 3, they make a packing removal as well put some needle nose and a flat head generally will do just fine
I would recommend changing the the propeller shaft strut bearing since u took out the engine. When the engine is in the boat you need to take out the coupler and remove the entire shaft which can be a huge pain. Once you have moved prop shaft it would be a good idea to replace all the seals in the "stuffing box" to prevent water intrusion along the prop shaft into the bilge as well as the bearings and seals along the shaft. It's much better to do that now than to have to haul out the boat later when you find leakage from damaged or worn bearings and seals.
The raw water goes through a heat exchanger which cools the coolant in your engines. The heat exchanger should be checked to see if they need to be serviced or replaced.

As for your engine replacement options, you could look at Mercury engines. Brand new 6.7L 550HP inboard diesels around $20K a piece. Significantly less expensive than your other options.
In case you didn’t know it’s a “30 year old Italian Yacht”

B is for “Oscar built it”
Oh Damn!
Mad props for Oscar, what a great worker!
“Arch”! It’s not a roof, man! It’s an arch.
😥, raid, is 😥
Look forward to the diagnosis of what issues the engine has. Damn good work getting it out without wrecking anything
Yet he's only rebuilding one. Face palm....
I would recommend putting in a dripless shaft packing also Mark each coupler so you put it back on the same transmission
The Army uses those 903s in the M-9 ACE and the M2/M3 Bradley, we would blow one once a month....good luck.
This is a perfect time to have your props refurbished and balanced. I saw a few chunks missing.
The raw water goes through a heat exchanger which cools the coolant in your engines. The heat exchanger should be checked to see if they need to be serviced or replaced.
I’m looking forward to seeing the rebuild. Should be easy for you guys!
I’m also REALLY looking forward to you guys being able to get back out on the water!
