Golden Conure: Get A Male Or Female? Is 1 ok Alone?

  • Golden Conures are AWESOME! One of my favorite species-
    But there are some special things about them:
    They are fabulous, no matter the gender. I've had male and female and they are both fantastic!
    However, they are a parrot that can't be alone. As is, they are prone to plucking. In my book, it's a must to have more than one parrot regardless of the species. With a communal parrot like a Golden Conure, it is a necessity.

    You are so right in everything you said about GGs, even about Dr. Chubb not selling to private parties.😊 I hope that anyone thinking about getting one of these phenomenal parrots takes your advice and gets two or at least has a companion parrot. My two are females and are very bonded but that doesn’t interfere with their affection towards me. I do individual training (playing) with them and they really enjoy their time with just me. I actually think the other one gets jealous waiting for their turn to train. So far, they can spin, wave, show wings and recall. I have trained dogs with the clicker but parrots are much faster learners. Thank you for another informative and entertaining video.

      @@ParrotBliss I moved back to Virginia a couple of months ago with my GCs. We are doing great for now but wait until the first snow fall. I set up their outdoor aviary but of course only put them out during the day, weather permitting. I still think that FL is the best possible climate for these tropical parrots but I just love them too much to give them up right now. I haven’t seen any you tube videos from you lately. Am I just missing them or have you stopped vlogging? Not sure why you didn’t see my post from a year ago but better later than never. LOL

    Mango enjoyed seeing Bonnie again. We almost had a male CG thru a friend of a friend, but sadly we heard about it too late and she was sold to another. We will keep trying to find a rescue down the road for our female. But in the meantime, she has three other flighted friends here to keep her company.

    Are male parrots easier to tame than female ones? I remember when I was a kid I had lots of budgies. The male ones were generally friendly but some of the females would bite HARD.

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  Год назад +1

      It depends. Some species are matriarchal and some patriarchal. That affects how friendly each gender is, generally speaking. Then there is also the human's propensity, meaning that I do better with females and my daughter with males! So there are a couple factors that influence this. Great question!!!

    I have a male that was a breeder, but lost his mate. I've had him about 10 years, but he was already older when I got him. I tried hard to get him off of seed and finally was able to get him onto pellets. Can you please tell me what you suggest in terms of nut feeding? Thanks much!

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  2 года назад

      Golden Conyers must have nuts in their diet - and it’s not the same as seeds. I’m glad you got him off of seeds, they are the wrong fat for this species. Your golden should get about a quarter cup of nuts every day. Walnuts, almonds, pistachios - our favorite at my house. Is your guy friendly?

    • @richardk6196
      @richardk6196 2 года назад +1

      @@ParrotBliss Thanks for your super quick reply. Now, yes is super friendly. He was in a retail bird store that had him for sale for over a year when I first laid eyes on him. He would bite everyone (not unusual for a breeder) and the avian vet guessed he was in his mid 20's. In fact his vet profile had him listed as "Old Man". Well, fast forward ten years and I can do just about anything with him. I can put him on his back in my hand and he'll go to sleep. Has definitely found his once spoon feed baby self. When I approach his cage he'll come over right onto my hand. I had the dome part of his cage removed and he loves being on top and spends the majority of his time there without restriction.

      @@ParrotBliss Yes they are. Can't imagine many species of bird would be able to be tamed after decades as a breeder. He's in the most prime space/high traffic area in the house and gets to go into my office where I have a male Hooded Parakeet and a male Rosy Bourke. He definitely likes to visit. (He is on a perch stand nearby and they're in the cage of course). Too much of a size difference.
